Did anyone else think Toronto Mike was going to unveil his first marijuana sponsor on Episode 420?

This is a hall of fame episode. He's a damn near perfect guest. Engaging, informative, funny.

It's like a talented version of me joined you in the basement.

Epic episode! Tyler seems like such a nice guy. I just missed meeting him and Ed at Roger Ashby's farewell as he was whisked away promptly. Thanks for squeezing in my question and I hope to get out to Burlington to the Walk Off The Earth tribute on Sunday afternoon for The Beard Guy. Sounds like a great lineup!

Like Beatts and the brother have eloquently pointed out, it was a near perfect episode.

Some random thoughts about it...

Tyler confused the hell outta me by repeatedly calling the "Canadian Music Hall of Fame" the "Rock of Roll Hall of Fame". I don't know if it's a Freudian slip because of the slight disdain I sensed during the episode that Tyler had for Canadian awards and honours or what but maybe getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the honour that he and the band really want. You would think a guy who has been in bands all his life knows the difference between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in Calgary but apparently not, he seemed to be using the names interchangeably to the point where I had to look up if the Barenaked Ladies are even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (they are not).

Also, his anger towards Steve Simmons and his infamous "hot dog" story caught me off guard, it comes from a really dark place. No Leafs fan or Toronto sports fan I know cares about that anymore, Kessel has moved on and succeeded, the Leafs have moved on and succeeded so to be that angry about it still made me think he was more upset at Steven Page or talking/being asked about Page during your discussion and just took out his frustration on his cousin. It was such a weird reaction.

Wonderful listen. Never heard anything approaching a long-form interview with Tyler and thoroughly enjoyed this one! As the brother mentioned, Tyler seems like a nice guy. Love that he was willing to "deep dive" with you and knew your stable of regulars like Weisblott and Retrontario!

I was honoured to learn that he's a regular listener of Toronto Mike'd and appreciates the #realtalk. :)

Wow, thanks for clearing that up Urooj. I really thought that since I went to the Juno’s in Cleveland Ohio last year to be inducted into the Canadian Music Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, that I was also now a member of the Rolling Rock Hall of Blame, along with Steve Simmons’ cousin, Phil Page. I’m so angry with being asked about Phil that I’ve forgotten all about the Stanley Cup winning performance we did together at the Hard Rock Hot Dog Hall of Shame in Vancouver last year. I hope this clears up your confusion Urooj, and that you are not angry out of no where, about something I just made up.

January 11, 2019 @ 6:40 PM

To hell with Urooj, Tyler. I called you a damn near perfect guest. That's got to be worth something.

You want to grab a hotdog sometime and we can hang out and mock him?

Not done this episode yet ... just wanted to remark, I was never really a BNL fan though they've obviously had amazing tracks over the years. Not embarrassed to put them on.

I saw them in '97 as a teen at a ... Scouting event in Thunder Bay of all things, and it was really awesome that they did that after being reasonably successful.

I saw them two or three years ago at one of the last big local festivals. Half the show was playing the hits and ... that was nice and pleasant and fine.

But holy crap, the last half of their set was a variety show! It seemed to be prompted/hosted by Tyler. IT WAS SO FUCKING FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING. Covers, Muppets skits and so much more ... we were just dying of laughter and so fucking happy. It was genuinely the best festival experience I ever had.

Just listened and brought back memories of my time at Ryerson during the late 80's, when Tyler was working security at the on campus Pub ( The Edge ...?) "asked" my friends and I to leave because we were getting too hammered off Strohs...yeah Strohs...but it was the best kept secret because it was actually brewed by Sleemans in Guelph and was not the same low budget crap from the USA that everyone thought, so it was always cold and plenty in stock.

Speaking of members or ex-members of the Barenaked Ladies having notable cousins working in the GTA, you forgot to bring up Kevin Yarde.

Wikipedia says he is Tyler's first cousin, I saw Kevin on the Weather Network for years and he made the jump to politics in October's election. Certainly someone people care for more than Steven Page's cousin, Steve Simmons.

Great episode! BNL is such a unique group, and so deeply embedded into the early nineties Toronto scene, that an awesome episode was inevitable. Steve Simmons deserves all the guff that comes his way on the Kessell story- he has made a career on unsubstantiated and out-and-out fabricated stories and innuendo, so there is no shame in calling him out for it even years later.

Excuse me now while I try to find "Don't Talk, Dance!" audio/video somewhere on the innerweb.

I'm gonna be completely honest...not a BNL fan, but hey I really did enjoy this podcast. Tyler sounds like a cool guy.
Did not know BNL covered PE.

@Mike: I'm surprised the Molly Johnson episode still comes up almost 6 months later. That's crazy. I still have not listened to ep 368 yet. I have it downloaded already. I did try listening to it and got about 5 minutes in but Molly being off the mic was irritating. I think this is one of those where I'm gonna have to physically sit at my computer to listen to it because I'm gonna have to constantly play with my volume.

January 14, 2019 @ 4:01 AM

Great Episode! I'm surprised that given Tyler went to Rye he didn't mention that they played the Rye Frosh Week Parade and Island Picnic! That was the first time I saw BNL! I can't remember if it was '89 or '90...

@Mike, I would love to listen to an episode of you, 1236, Retrontario, and Tyler. I think Tyler's memory of 80s/90s Toronto pop culture might rival yours, 1236, and Retrontario's!

I'm working on the Tyler/12:36/Retrontario roundtable. For that one, I'll just shut up and listen.

January 19, 2019 @ 9:51 AM

Very epic episode and undoubtedly up there with the likes of that RECENT(!!) Tom Wilson gem in
that a diverse field of topics was covered and yet one could not help but still be left eagerly anticipating an equally tantalizing follow-up!! P.S., can't wait for that particular round table, even if I will undoubtedly kinda listen with IMPOTENT RAGE (is there really any other kind?!?), due to my frustrating inability to also be a proud if overly-savant participant!! (Kinda like Clubber Lang at the
start of Rocky 3 when Mickey only lets him fight Tomato Can Palookas to maintain the belt!).

January 19, 2019 @ 10:42 AM

And obviously the HIM I refer to at the bottom of my previous comment is R. Balboa!!

January 19, 2019 @ 10:44 AM

People threw water bottles at Cake because it was Canada Day and they said America would take our water whether we wanted them to or not. And they kept saying it. It was obviously a joke but akin to showing up at a 4th of July concert with Ted Nugent and saying Windsor was going to annex Detroit. BTW, Ted Nugent’s a dick. I used his name for effect.

January 30, 2019 @ 12:09 AM

Just listened to this great episode. I would not call myself a huge fan of the band but I could have listened to Tyler for another 2 hours. Such a down to earth and likable guy.

I would also make the 2 hour drive to downtown Yonge just to check out the "late night record shops" every couple of months. I had a buddy that I knew in high school that worked at Cheapies a few years later.
Good times!

Really enjoyed this episode. Great insight to the Canadian phenomenon of bashing our own celebs once they make it big elsewhere.

@Elora Chuck

We did seem to do that here, but we don't always do it. We didn't do it with Shania or Celine or Bryan.

Or Joni or Neil.
