Holy crap! I didn't expect this ep to be that long. Downloading as we speak. Looking forward to this one actually. Wonder how many people I'll manage to piss off. Go Habs!

A big thanks to everyone who submitted audio for this ep. Such kind words... I'm so appreciative.

Great episode Mike & congrats on 400. Thanks for your comment about myself.
Keep up the great work.

So maybe it is a bit of Stockholm syndrome for Juan... Yes he was dragged along for the first TMXL... but when I mentioned the second one, he said "we're going right?!?!" :)

Also, Juan just celebrated his 16th anniversary on the 16th of November of his move to Canada - meaning he needs to be schooled on my childhood: Toronto in the 70/80/90s!; Can-con (54-40, The Odds, and of course Lowest of the Low), my childhood TV (Uncle Bobby, Polkaroo, Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings), NFB (Log Driver's Waltz) etc.. Mike, your podcasts are perfect! Entertaining AND educational! ;)

November 18, 2018 @ 5:23 PM

As I said in my message, I've only recently become a hardcore TM'er, but now I'm in for good. I've been binge-ing for the last couple of months and enjoy I thoroughly. Some of my faves have been:
- Retrontatio's visits (natch)
- Bob MacKenzie
- Spike Gallagher (!)
- Dave Hodge (both)
- Alan Cross (both)
- Elliotte Friedman
- Peter Gross

The KOTJ eps are great, too. That Dave Hodge! And who knew that he was such a music fan, and he's so hip! Going to all those concerts still? He's 73. What a cool cat.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Was trying to wait a little before commenting.

First of all I hate the sound of my voice. Seriously...I suck! lol I always say that whenever I hear myself, whether its in a recording, video, voicemail, etc.
My phone also sucks for recording so gonna have to find another way next time, or maybe there's a better app I ont know I just used the recorder in my phone. It still managed to pick up my background music though I noticed that.

Second: I really enjoyed this. Was kinda cool to hear some of you people's voices. I don't make it to Toronto often especially the downtown area. I know whenever I go to Waterloo I always try to plan accordingly in order to avoid rush hour on the 401.

@Jason from Sudbury

Just listen to yourself another 399 times and you'll be fine with your voice. Trust me.

November 19, 2018 @ 7:54 AM

@Jason from Sudbury, don't feel bad. Once we heard you like the Habs we hated your voice too... ;) jk

November 19, 2018 @ 8:31 AM

Jason from Sudbury - I don't like the sound of my voice either! So I feel your pain.

This was fun to listen to, I haven't finished yet so I'll try to do that soon, but it was nice putting voices to names. :)

November 19, 2018 @ 9:15 AM

@jj I'm still working my way through it too :) Really enjoying it.

November 19, 2018 @ 9:18 AM

Despite TM assuring me via email that my message was great, can't help but feel like I sounded like
a desperate ,just-jailed eunuch struggling to find and make his one phone call, and subsequently
speeding through it due to fear of the clock running down and/or getting a wrong number on the
other end!! Not only do I have the proverbial face for radio, but it is also proudly accompanied by
a voice only suitable to be heard/'enjoyed' by storefront mannequins. "Mannequin", now that was
a great film!!!

November 19, 2018 @ 9:37 AM

@bsmntdwllr73 you sounded perfectly fine. In my head I was expected you to say "it puts the lotion on the skin" at least once, but you didn't so props for that... ;)

November 19, 2018 @ 10:00 AM

Gotta love an oh-so- timely "Silence of the Lambs" reference in late 2018!! As for the sound of my voice, you're much too kind! Next time I intend to either inhale some helium beforehand or perhaps
gargle with some broken glass to get a much better desired death-metal- vocalist growling effect!!

November 19, 2018 @ 10:07 AM

You were able to basically talk to yourself for almost the full hour and 40 minutes...that alone is impressive.

I think I'd drive myself mad after 5; it would be a very short show.

Congrats, your self-rambling was quite entertaining!

November 19, 2018 @ 10:35 AM

Beatts - it's just fascinating!

Cambo - I can't tell if you're joking or not, lol. he talked to himself, but also us because we are all listening. I enjoyed hearing him laugh during the playbacks of the audio!

November 19, 2018 @ 11:14 AM

Al The Royal Pain

Great episode as always Mike. Congrats on 400! Thank you for including my clip.

Regarding the TMDS invoice, there is no need. I'm paying you back in tiny increments via Patreon.

To those of you cringing over your recorded voices, I'll tell you what I say to everyone I record, what you hear in the recording is what everyone else hears all the time, so get used to it. :)

In my mind I was talking to the people who recorded the clips. :)

James Edgar

Congrats on the 400th Mike! Once again i agonized over what i was going to say and never recorded a thing. Loving this episode maybe next time i'll get it done.

November 19, 2018 @ 12:05 PM

@Mike, I DEFINITELY want to hear the porn story with you and Elvis..

November 19, 2018 @ 1:14 PM

LieveFamke - RIGHT?! A festivus gift waiting in the wings, that story ;)

November 19, 2018 @ 1:31 PM

@jj, exactly! ;) ..

and jj, you sounded fine! I think I sound like a little kid! I've actually had people call me and say 'can I talk to your mummy or daddy?'

November 19, 2018 @ 2:36 PM

I was sitting on the toilet when I recorded mine. Good acoustics in the loo.

November 19, 2018 @ 2:39 PM

...more tongue in cheek- and genuine good job...

Doing a one-person show and not having anyone to immediately bounce off like in an interview can be challenging.

Not a slag in any way- opposite. It was entertaining.

November 19, 2018 @ 2:42 PM

Jason from Sudbury

@Basement: You were great!

November 19, 2018 @ 3:14 PM

I never got around to submitting mine. Next time their a Cheryl submission?

November 19, 2018 @ 3:39 PM

@Boomer, Cheryl would have submitted one but Mike's a dick and hides it like he does the open mike's every week.

November 19, 2018 @ 3:44 PM

Urooj Islam

Cheryl's submission got lost in the mail due to the Canada Post strike.

November 19, 2018 @ 4:12 PM

I say we all donate a couple bucks towards her birthday fund, but hide it somewhere on the main page of this website for her to not find for weeks.

It's entirely possible that Cheryl only reads Open Mikes now.

Hopefully we get a Cheryl Birthday special episode of Toronto Mike'd this year on December 12th.

Send in your recorded birthday messages for Cheryl to Mike, everyone!

November 19, 2018 @ 4:37 PM

Cambo - I just wasn't too sure! I cannot tell anymore what is what. Yes, it's tough to essentially talk alone like Mike did but you're right he did a great job.

LieveFamke - thank you! I don't think you sounded childish at all. I hope that Elvis and Mike tell us that story for Christmas, haha!

November 19, 2018 @ 4:44 PM

Beatts Traub

@Urooj is onto something. We should send in Cheryl birthday wishes for Mike to play! :)

Grrr! And I think I even included YBS as TM canon in a congratulatory post for #300 (#310). I'll definitely remember for #500 (#510).

You guys are mean lmao

November 19, 2018 @ 5:53 PM

Congratulations on episode #400.

The pod is a fantastic listen, and as you've increased the pace of your output, it's been hard to keep up with all the ones I'd like to listen to. And in light of your tweets from earlier, there'll be several more pods in the near future I'll have to listen to and catch up on as well. Good thing I'll have a lot of time off over the holiday season to do that (when we'll hopefully get to listen to another Elvis festivus episode!).

November 20, 2018 @ 3:47 AM

I really enjoyed hearing all the other commenters' "real voices" in this episode. After sending Mike my audio clip, I realized I should have told the story of the first time we met -- when he agreed to meet me sight-unseen at the corner of Lake Shore and Islington to swap phone batteries because I didn't want to spend $100 fixing my phone if it only needed a new battery. At the time, I knew we had the same phone because he dedicated a post to it once, saying he was proud he didn't have the latest iPhone. So I'm glad you added those details - although now I don't have a good story to tell on Episiode 400.

November 20, 2018 @ 12:07 PM

*Edit: that should say "episode 500". That's how impressive your output has become. I was 100 episodes off.

November 20, 2018 @ 12:08 PM

I just listened to the rest, and it was so great.

I also want to say that y'all are kinda too much with the Cheryl jokes, she is a real person. It wouldn't be cool if we did that to any other real person, she ain't perfect but none of us are.

November 20, 2018 @ 12:14 PM

So when you did you deign to take on your new 'second wife's' last name? And why weren't any of us TM'd regulars invited to your obviously furtive and low-profiled nuptials?!? And, btw, what are the odds that SHE is even aware of said 'honour'? Rhetorical questions, as following this thread presumably falls far outside her niche area(s) of interest!!

@Jason from Sudbury
Thanks for the kind support, but I suggest that you get your hearing checked STAT!! Regardless of what anyone says I can't abide the sound of my own voice, Then again, I'll take that over my numerous and legion other physical shortcomings. (Hint: Use your imaginations!!). P.S., loved hearing The Eels in the background of your recording. A Man Called E all the way! P.P.S., Bet your love for that great Seger track was influenced by that ace Metallica cover version? See, we all have a little bit O'Cheryl inside of us!

November 20, 2018 @ 12:19 PM

As for the so-called barbs directed at Cheryl, anything outside the Open Mike forum probably isn't even on her radar. Plus, she is most frequent and resolute in her posting so it probably has had very little effect on her psyche. And, yes, there have been a few occasions where she has responded with great snark herself, either aimed at her critics or various other worthy targets (unions, Justin Trudeau, "those bitches she used to work with", kids, most holidays, etc.!!).

November 20, 2018 @ 12:27 PM

@jj I never once preached about being perfect that's for sure. Nothing malicious in my busting chops. I tease the people I like and expect it in return. If someone told me they didn't like it, I would immediately stop. It's must easier to ignore people anyways. I'm just a smart ass who likes to kid.

November 20, 2018 @ 1:19 PM

@Beatts (Traub!)
In the immortal words of an integral early INXS track: "DON"T CHANGE!!!" P.S., I totally
hope you make it back to Toronto at some point so I can longingly stare at/admire your fantastic
beard in person. I promise that it won't get (TOO) awkward!!! #PatchyFacial-HairedButterball (ME!)

November 20, 2018 @ 1:35 PM

bsmntdwllr73 & Beatts - I know, I just feel like sometimes it is a bit much. she could be reading these for all we know, as she figures out how to get back to OpenMike every day even if it isn't at the top of her page. but yeah, maybe it does not register on her radar. and indeed i am imperfect myself, but i could always get beyond my height one day, growth spurts can happen!!

November 20, 2018 @ 1:37 PM

Myself, I'm over 6 feet tall, but I'd gladly exchange a couple of inches of height for some 'personal
growth' elsewhere (TMI, sorry!!!). Yeah, height is over-rated. Might be easy for me to say, but it's pretty much only good for helping 'damsels in distress' reach the higher-shelved items in supermarkets or department stores!! Besides, I'm a mere shrimp compared to 99% of basketball players. #shorty73!!

(And it would be an honour to wake up to a snarky takedown or two from Mrs. Bob Seger416 herself, if she had a problem with any of my liberal sarcasm pointed in her particular direction.) Nobody likes
mockery or criticism (especially me!!), but I always admire people who are at least a little bit creative
with their sniping. Knocking my number of posts or constant TM'd lurking is pointless as I can easily do that myself! Always best to metaphorically cut one's self before others do it to/for you (Lifelong Personal Motto!!).

November 20, 2018 @ 1:49 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - I just want to not have to hem my pants, or live in skinny jeans forever. and size does not matter, it's totally how ya use it. this is true!! I hope someone does engage you in a witty thoughtful back and forth one of these days ;)

November 20, 2018 @ 2:17 PM

Oh, I can't complain at all about the level of friendly discourse/engagement I receive on here!! Like
with you, for instance! It is always a delight to read and respond to your thoughtful comments!!
My previous entry had more to do with the lack of originality or creativity of most of the folks who have taken cheap shots at me on here. Believe me, I've been verbally cut down by some of the best,
(especially some folks I might have actually been related to at some point!!). And as for the proverbial
"motion of the ocean" advice, sadly, I have never one for the sea and, I also unfortunately lack the proper oar(s) needed for that kind o'boating!!! It's a little bit like the adult version of those blasted
"must be this tall to ride" signs at most amusement parks!

November 20, 2018 @ 2:27 PM

Urooj Islam

Cheryl was interviewed by the Kansas City Star in 2015 for being a visually impaired Royals fan. This is why I was confused because I don't ever remember her bring up the Royals in her daily updates.

November 20, 2018 @ 2:30 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - lol, i am totally in the same boat. although i don't get seasick, cannot say i can move the boat to save my life. i enjoy our interactions too. people aren't always creative, just go straight for the easy shots.

November 20, 2018 @ 2:56 PM

@Urooj Islam
Great find!! You certainly have a knack/eye for finding interesting articles. So I guess it is safe to
assume that the dude in the accompanying photo is definitely not Cheryl?!?

November 20, 2018 @ 2:56 PM

@Urooj Islam, what a deep dive! Amazing find!

November 20, 2018 @ 3:21 PM

@Urooj Islam

Cheryl openly rooted for the Royals that entire 2015 season.

There are many comments like this:

November 20, 2018 @ 3:55 PM

Having lived completely in the shadows when it comes to having even the bare minimum of an
online presence under my given name, the only things that come up are a couple of contest wins
from the National Post and an article in the Toronto Star involving a charitable enterprise I largely
co-ordinated back in the early aughts. Now under "bsmntdwllr73," thanks to my year and a half
of innumerable comments posted on here, well that is a whole 'nother tasteless kettle of fish!!

November 20, 2018 @ 4:09 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Wait...I'm confused. I thought Cheryl didn't get into baseball till a couple years ago, basically that same year she was chearing for the Royals. But in that article they say she's been a Royals fan since 1985. Or am I missing something?

November 20, 2018 @ 11:52 PM

Damn. A lot of solid handles there Mike, including "Suckwinder Passwinder"

November 21, 2018 @ 8:25 AM

That CQ guy used to HATE it when I'd get free stuff just for having a blog. The resentment was palpable.

November 21, 2018 @ 9:09 AM

Jason from Sudbury

Whatever happened to CQ? I used to get a laugh outa him.

In some ways I kinda sorta do miss Irv. As entertaining as he ccan be though the guy is a loose cannon. Although it was kind of interesting but at the same time scary to see him post out here while he was dealing with his health issues. It was nice to see him chill out a bit but at the same time it was just weird not to see him go off on people. It was almost as if we were just waiting to see what would set him off. Its too bad cause he can be a likeable guy.

So the whole Cheryl not liking baseball thing, either the guy who wrote the article just said that she's been a fan since 1985 just to sell his article and make shit sound believeable, or she played us all for years.

November 21, 2018 @ 9:20 AM

@Jason from Sudbury
Irv was kinda like the real-life embodiment of the cinematic interpretation of the Incredible Hulk:
Always very angry, even when he was in his civilian identity of Bruce Banner!! Post-illness, he did
seem like a much more tranquil and agreeable gent, but then he slowly but surely returned to
original form. Quite sad, actually, as he did make a lot of important and interesting points when
he wasn't being completely antagonistic,

As for Cheryl's baseball-fan integrity/machinations, 2 words: KEYSER SOZE!!!
