Good morning Mike.

Crazy Super Bowl eh? Loved seeing Missy Elliot on the Half Time show...still trying to figure out why Lenny was there...to sing I kissed a girl? WTF?

If anyone here lives in or around Aurora, my band is playing this Friday night at Sgt. Pepper's. Free admission, we start at 9.

mrmojorisinca

Best Superbowl in recent memory that is for sure.

Lenny just like to whore himself out to anything that will pay him, trying to buy himself a bigger island :)
I think he was there because he give them the rock and roll cred to appeal to the older crowd and Katty will bring in the younger crowd

Cheryl

Well, I'm not first, but I'm second. My Nets won last night by a couple points over the Clippers and the Raptors lost, but my Suns won. I'm doing well in the curling pool. Kean beat Frans 9 to 3 last night. It was close for a while, but good thing Kean ran away with it and won 9 to 3 and Balsdon won as well over Squires. This afternoon Kean plays Balsdon. That will probably be close with Kean winning by a point in an extra end. I like Balsdon, but need Kean as Kean winning will get me my money and I need my money. Frans is 0 and 2 and I am happy about that because I hate them. Epping is 2 and 0 and the guy who has Epping wants to do a little bet with me because Kean and Epping play each other on Friday. He's betting a tuny so I get a couple bucks if Kean wins. Kean has beaten Epping before and they'll do it again.

Cheryl

I meant to say my Suns lost. I typed won by mistake.

Re: Super Bowl
I thought Katy looked and sounded great.
Not a fan of Missy so I could have done without her.
Lenny always sounds the same - not a big fan of him either.

Oh, and the game - exciting but ultimately disappointing. I know everyone expected them to run the ball with Lynch but that's what makes Carroll a great coach. He thinks outside the box/do the unexpected but unfortunately the NE defender made a great play.

February 3, 2015 @ 9:10 AM

Argie

@Al
I live up in Aurora - don't tell anyone, though.

If you see a 300lbs guy with various neck tats and wearing lots of camouflage, don't be alarmed - it won't be me.

Seriously though I might make it there to see your band. I like your music.

February 3, 2015 @ 9:17 AM

Al The Royal Pain

@Argie

I agree re: superbowl, it was a bad call, but not historically bad as many would say. I'm sure he thought it will either work or it will be an incomplete pass and then they can try running it in. No one would be looking for the pass. In the end, it took a hell of a play to get that interception. The the guy went in strong (so strong that the Seahawk player literally bounced off him.

I Like Lenny's earlier stuff. Are You Gonna Go MY Way was a great album, not for the singles that charted, the songs that weren't singles were so much better IMO.

I hope you come out to the show! If you do, please introduce yourself (I'm the singer). I will buy you a beer.

A story in the Calgary Herald on the weekend didn't really surprise me. A mother who chose to treat her 7 year son with homeopathic remedies for a strep infection instead of taking him to the doctor died as a result. The police have charged her with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing the death.

I'll give you one guess on the colour of the mothers skin.

Here's the story...

February 3, 2015 @ 10:15 AM

@ Glen

What does her skin colour have to do with her stupidity?

White Trash, nothing more nothing less.

February 3, 2015 @ 10:41 AM

Glen

@McNulty

I was referring to the parents of that 11 year native girl who died last week. They removed her from chemotherapy and chose to use native medicine instead to treat her leukemia were NOT charged with "failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing the death".

I should have been clearer in my post.

February 3, 2015 @ 10:44 AM

McNulty

@ Glen

And this woman was white. I still don't see your point.

Look at all teh crazy anti-vaccine people. Stupidity doesn't follow racial lines.

February 3, 2015 @ 10:46 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@Speysidephil

To label this young lady as white trash would be questionable at best . There is an entire subculture that has a distrust of big pharma and 21st century medicine. Measles and mumps are now making a comeback. Charlatans like Dr. Andrew Wakefield with bogus research linking immunizations with autism have done immeasurable damage to credible and proven medical treatments. And don't get me started on the likes of Jenny McCarthy.
Mind you, anyone who takes medical advice from a B actress whose big claim to fame is posing naked in Playboy, well there is a price to pay as evidenced in the article. Unfortunately this boy won't be the last.

February 3, 2015 @ 11:01 AM

Argie

@McNulty
Glen's point is not about the stupidity of some parents. Its about how our police and judicial system treats natives differently than other residents of Canada.

Oh, and he is spot on.

February 3, 2015 @ 11:01 AM

Ben V

Speaking of the anti vac crowd. Always good to know a breakout of measels is currently happening in Toronto. What are the chances patient zero belong to a parent who thinks Acai berry and oil of oregano are a better preventative measure than vaccines.

I agree with you Nigel. Gasp. Only problem is that people buy into a B list actress, because they want to. They have a certain level of distrust about big pharma and governments. Jenny McCarthy just acts like a beacon where people can find justification in their suspicions or reinforce their already ludicrous beliefs.

I do however believe Michele Bachmann the worst culprit for stating HPV vaccine causes mental retardation. All because someone woman on the campaign trail told her so.

February 3, 2015 @ 11:15 AM

Irvine

@Argie. Yeah, like how the police & judicial system treat natives differently. For example, how many on a reserve near Calgary still haven't had flood damage to their homes repaired. Or the lengthy list of dead native women that the RCMP finally acknowledged "might" be a problem.

@Nigel: I'm pro vaccine myself. But you mention the subculture that mistrusts "big pharma". Well it's not hard to see why some don't put faith in them. When you're institutions & your businesses repeatedly fail you it becomes difficult to trust them. That's human nature.

I don't agree with the anti vaccine types but I get why they don't get vaccinated.

February 3, 2015 @ 12:00 PM

Ben V

@ Irv: With regards to the anti vaccine crowd. I really can't see where they are coming from. I think a small number of people are against it because of big business and government failing them. Yet how many of those who won't vaccinate their kids received the same vaccines themselves?

Majority of them choose not to due to religious beliefs and others who are all into new age medicine based on what they are told from their naturopath.

I had a neighbour with a special needs child. She said the child was totally fine until she was vaccinated. Make of that anecdotal evidence what you will.

@E: I know someone with a special needs child who was totally fine, and then they stopped wearing diapers. Make of that anecdote what you will.

@E: I'm politely calling you an idiot who doesn't know science, and who should not be in charge of the well being of a dependent. Make of that anecdote what you will.

I'm serious when I say nothing islamic terrorists do surprises me anymore. it could be a beheading, burning a person alive, whatever they do - not surprised....

February 3, 2015 @ 2:21 PM

E.

@ Lorne, Don't get your knickers in a knot. I shared an anecdote from a neighbour who had a special needs child. I didn't claim to be Bill Nye the Science Guy. Put down the Red Bull and have some herbal tea.

@ Argie, of course that's what they do. Terrorists exist to hurt people. That's what terrorism is. Not a good thing. Ever.

February 3, 2015 @ 2:59 PM

Lorne

@E: So you're a troll as well as an idiot. Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

February 3, 2015 @ 3:06 PM

E.

@Lorne. Maybe you should put down BOTH cans of Red Bull.

February 3, 2015 @ 3:13 PM

Argie

@E.
I'm afraid herbal tea will not be enough for good ole Lorne.

February 3, 2015 @ 3:14 PM

Lorne

@E: If I had two cans of redbull, I couldn't type. Even your insults don't make any logical sense.

February 3, 2015 @ 3:43 PM

E.

@ Lorne, not really insults. Just a suggestion to calm down, and please don't call me an idiot for sharing an anecdote. Unless the discussion is a group-think exercise in which case I apologize.

February 3, 2015 @ 3:45 PM

Lorne

Actually, I called you an idiot and a troll. I apologize. I should have called you an idiot OR a troll.

An idiot presents a piece of indefensible data as if it were fact, because they're an idiot and don't know better. "omg vaccines cause autism here is mah proof you can't deny it!!!"

A troll presents a piece of indefensible data as if it were fact, because they want to stir up shit and refuse to stand behind the impact of their statements. "Hey, *I* didn't say all black people were criminals, it's just something I heard. You can't blame me for presenting it as a fact".

One requires idiocy, the other intent. So you're right, you can't be both and I sincerely apologize for that confusion. I'll let you decide which one you are (or in other words: that's the facts, make of it what you will).

February 3, 2015 @ 3:52 PM

E.

@ Lorne, well, a fascinating exchange. And I will allow you to have the last word as per above.

Yesterday's snowstorm brought over 30cm to Bolton. I called work at 7AM telling them I will be in when I get there. I left just after 7AM & drove for 40 minutes & only got 3km from my house. Drove back home & waited. Left again at 9AM & was at work by 10AM near the airport - white knuckled, but I got there. I was astonished with the workers that showed up - Alliston, Tottenham, Beeton, Shelbourne & even 1 person from Wasaga Beach (true). 15 of the 28 salaried employees only arrived.

The people that didn't (as has happened in the past) are the one's that live close by - emails & calls "due to weather conditions I won't be able to come in today". Most of them are 35 or younger & us old folks some over 60 made it in. It's dedication.

GM told the one's that came in yesterday will be getting a gift card & the other's (depending on circumstance) will have to take a vacation day. They were all pissed. GM got in & lives in Unionville.

Supposed to get approx. 5-10 cm tonight & I wonder how many will not be in tomorrow - LOL

Update on the curling pool. I was wrong. Kean beat Balsdon handily 9 to 3. I think I'm actually glad I didn't take Balsdon in the pool. Kean is better. Epping lost though. They lost a game while Kean is undefeated. Frans won unfortunately beating Rumfeldt. Too bad Frans won. I hate them. Anyway, Kean plays Squires tonight. Another win for Kean. Balsdon plays Rumfeldt. That should be a win. My most hated Frans plays St. Denis. They haven't won yet so hopefully they can beat Frans. My Habs and Coyotes will win tonight. Leafs will lose.

February 3, 2015 @ 6:08 PM

Prediction - Kean, Habs & Coyotes lose & Frans wins tonight.
Leafs who cares, another loss to best team in NHL now.

Raptors will beat the Nets tomorrow.

I think some of the distrust is to be expected. We're all aware of the magic pill generation & how so much medication has a side effect, etc. And we have (rightfully so) lost trust in our institutions. We've gone from believing what they say to not believing anything at all even if it's the truth.

Leafs then leading 3-2 & Bernier back in net after Reimer shuts down the Preds, top team in the league.

February 4, 2015 @ 8:31 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Habs lost to the Sabres. I just can't believe it. The Leafs lost, too, but it was against the best team in the league, so it's not as bad as my Habs losing.

February 4, 2015 @ 9:17 AM

Cheryl

My Coyotes won last night. That was good, but how could a crappy team like the Sabres beat my Habs. Anyway, news about the curling pool. Kean beat squires quite handily last night. Andrew, you were wrong about Kean losing. They beat Squires 9 to 4 so who is the best team, it's Kean. They're going to be in the Brier. They have not lost a game yet this week and they won't. There are games this morning, but Kean is not playing. They play Rumfeldt and St. Denis today. No problem. Rumfeldt and St. Denis both suck. Balsdon won last night beating Rumfeldt. You know Balsdon only lost one game and that was to Kean. Frans won again last night though. That's no good. Frans is 2 and 2, but don't worry, they will lose. Actually Corner is already beating them as I speak. Anyway, Balsdon is beating up on St. Denis as well as I speak. I'm telling you Kean is going to win this whole thing and I'm going to win my money. I'm also going to win a tuny from the Friday game when Kean plays Epping. You'll see. Just wait. Northern Ontario Provincials start today. Currie will win that. Jacobs will cool off and lose. I know everything. I wish there was a Northern Ontario pool, but there isn't.

February 4, 2015 @ 10:27 AM

Just applied to MLSE for an online posted job. It wasn't listed upon their corp. career webpage, and then their webpage was chock full of buggy logic. Jeesh.

February 4, 2015 @ 12:00 PM

Cheryl

Well, this sucks. Rumfeldt goes and clobbers Kean 10 to 5. This really sucks big time. Why did that have to happen. Oh well, they will beat St. Denis tonight handily. I can't afford Kean to lose any more games. They have to stay on top and win it all on the weekend and go to the Brier. I need my money. Frans also won which sucks. Corner did beat them earlier though. Balsdon really clobbered Corner though 7 to 0. Well, Balsdon is doing well. Anyway, I need my money so I need Kean to win over St. Denis. Tonight my Nets will beat the Raptors. Let's go Nets.

February 4, 2015 @ 4:53 PM

good time charlie

Speaking of 'stats fraud:'

February 4, 2015 @ 5:53 PM

Cheryl

My nets beat the Raptors. It's about time. This is great. I loved that game. curling didn't go so good last night. Kean lost. They were losing 6 to 2, but did make a comeback and lost 9 to 8 to crappy St. Denis. They only won two games and one of them was against Kean. I need them to win. They better beat Corner and MacAulay today. Then hopefully they will beat epping and Heggestad tomorrow. I don't want them to keep losing. It's like Kean has gone into a big slump and I don't know why. Also Currie played their first game yesterday in Northern Ontario Provincials. They had a 2 to 0 lead through most of that game, but Hackner came back and beat them. Curling just isn't good last night. It better be good today.

legal limbo update

When the conservative Globe and Mail rejects a proposed law you have to wonder...about the proposed law.

GLOBE EDITORIAL

Excerpt:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper never tires of telling Canadians that we are at war with the Islamic State. Under the cloud of fear produced by his repeated hyperbole about the scope and nature of the threat, he now wants to turn our domestic spy agency into something that looks disturbingly like a secret police force.

Canadians should not be willing to accept such an obvious threat to their basic liberties. Our existing laws and our society are strong enough to stand up to the threat of terrorism without compromising our values.

This week, Mr. Harper released a video in which he recklessly conflates the two recent lone-wolf incidents in Canada with the Islamic State’s call for attacks on “non-believing countries.”

The two attacks – one in Ottawa and the other in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. – were horrendous. They shocked Canadians and scared them. But there is no evidence that either attacker was connected to ISIS. The more likely theory is that they were troubled young men who self-radicalized.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/editorials/parliament-must-r...

February 5, 2015 @ 12:11 PM

Argie

@legal limbo
This is essentially a cover-your-ass law. Every time there is an attack, whether here or in France or Australia, citizens always ask "why the hell weren't the police tracking these dirt bags?" In the event there is another attack (and God knows there will be another), the federal govt wants to say "well, we have in procedures in place to gather info from suspected terrorists, etc"

This is not about the govt spying on innocent people who have nothing to hide,. Its about tracking down wanna-be jihadists (and we all know there are plenty of them around).

Geez, even Justin will vote for it.

I prefer the Globe's interpretation.

@ Twins from Bolton: Read your post about the snow storm and lack of younger employees coming into work. Do you think it's really dedication that made the older employees go into work? Why would you waste all the time in traffic and add to it the potential for an accident? I would argue that those who are younger and didn't come in were smarter. If you take into consideration age and the slowing of reflexes, those between 25-35 would have the best reflexes to handle driving in the snow. Then of course we'd go down a rabbit hole on that topic, but we won't

It really doesn't matter if you live 5 minutes away or 2 hours away really. You took the job knowing how far away you live from that place of work. In a snow storm such as monday it wouldn't have mattered my proximity to work I wouldn't everattempt to go in. What's the real point? To say that you did and rub it in other people's faces. I know my driving capabilities, but I know how people take care of their cars and I watch them drive when whether isn't inclement. Why risk it at all? It's nice that your GM rewarded those that came in. On the flip side punishing them for not coming in by making them use a vacation day is heavy handed and unneceesarily punitive in nature.

My last job had me within 10 minutes of my house. When I did drive in during a storm the majority of people that show up spend the rest of the day talking about the snow storm and the people that didn't show up.

With the ability to be remote in a number of industries what's the point on going in. I'm not saying your place of work is enabled to work from home, but why venture out? If you are a doctor, a police officer or someone in a life saving or potential life saving role then that's what work demands. Any other business can wait for a day till the roads are safer, the work will still be there tomorrow.

I would hardly label the older workforce more dedicated than the younger one in your business. If that truly is the case why doesn't your GM find more dedicated employees?

February 5, 2015 @ 4:13 PM

Cheryl

Kean won. That's great. They just beat Corner 10 to 5. That's wonderful. They're back to their winning ways which is great because I need the money. They play Macaulay tonight and then tomorrow they play Epping and they play Heggestad. Unfortunately Frans won again today over Heggestad. Heggestad has not won a game. They suck. One guy has them. Everyone has a team in the pool. There is no team nobody has. The guy who has Heggestad will lose for sure. Balsdon lost as well today to Epping. I have that bet with the guy who has Epping. Kean and Epping play each other tomorrow and so if Kean wins, I get a tuny. I could be $22.00 richer by Monday. Currie isn't doing so well. They already lost three games. Unfortunately Jacobs is lights out winning everything. That's no good. Oh well.

February 5, 2015 @ 5:01 PM

@ Ben V

Reason why I wrote initial comment.

How about the 62 year old worker in Detroit who WALKED to & from work each day (32KM each way) for over 20 years & NEVER MISSED A DAY. Now this guy is dedicated.

Nobody else commented & I was waiting until someone did. If nobody did I was going to comment Friday Open Mike. If you drive properly with the conditions, it will take longer but don't we all take chances every time we drive? Roads are NEVER SAFE.

More snow predicted for Sat., Sun. & Monday. I'll bet anything a lot more people come in on Monday. Nothing wrong with GM "giving something" to anyone who came in last Monday as we "gave something" back in return.

Safe Driving.

I ... severely impeded my job performance by staying up way too late earlier this week arguing with an anti-vaxxer on Facebook. I felt it was important.

Unfortunately my arguments, which I would like to consider nuanced, and possibly getting to the crux of it, were undermined by other people later jumping in and talking about what a fucking idiot the anti-vaxxer was.

@mark-o-saurus rex: Sometimes you're arguing for the people who are listening, not for the person you're arguing with. In that case, pointing out that they're a fucking idiot is a perfectly cromulant stance.

Example:
Person: I'm going to eat glass because it's made of beach, and the ocean is natural

You: If you eat glass, you'll probably die. It's bad for your digestive system.

Person: But I feel glass is the right thing to do; I have the right to make my choice

You: {long argument using facts and logic to scientifically prove eating glass is bad}

Person: Maybe there's just some things about eat glass that science just doesn't know yet. Science has been wrong in the past.

You: .... you're a fucking idiot.

Someone else: Y'know, I'd heard about glass eating on Dr. Oz. Sounded fishy. Thanks for the facts, Mark.

Person: But glass eating!

Someone else: Seriously? Y'know what, just don't bleed stupid on me when you choke up your intestines, you fucking idiot.

I have mixed feelings concerning vaccination. It's a hot potato subject and I can see both sides of the coin. If that makes me an 'idiot' so be it. However, the link I posted was to a scientist who worked for the CDC and (allegedly) repressed his own statistics concerning links to autism and will be testifying before Congress.
