@ Blind Dave: Come back to the open mikes Blind Dave. Last one had little or no bashing, also very little if any political debates. I actually think the last open mike was very hive mind like.

As I often do, the other night I left my patio door partially open, with the glass door open and the screen door firmly closed (based on the layout of my yard/house, there's no real possibility of an intruder, and we leave it open for our cat to enjoy the sights and sounds overnight)

At 3am my wife wakes me up saying she's heard something downstairs. The alarm (with motion sensors), however, hasn't gone off. So I man up and head down, armed only with my iphone. This means that if there is a burglar (ideally Hamburglar since I know i can probably take him), I can strike out furiously by shining a bright light into his eyes with my iTorch app.

So as I approach the main level of the house with the patio door, in the dark i hear scuffling and running. I flip on the lights and there's nobody there. My cat is freaked out, hankering in the corner of the room. There was a bowl of almonds on the coffee table, and it has been knocked off, with the contents all over the floor.

As I look into the yard, I see a retreating grey furry ass - a gigantic raccoon - which, somehow figured out how to use it's paws to slide open the screen door. That raccoon was probably in my house a good ten minutes.

Prepare yourselves accordingly. The animals are taking back the planet.

@ Ryan G: If you need a good catch and release trap let me know. I've been dealing with the bastards all summer.

@ Ryan The fact that a raccoon was in your house should freak you out. I would prefer having an actual intruder over those dirty effers.

Raccoons 1- Ryan G 0
Start of 2 nd period tonight.
Say goodbye to your screen door.

August 20, 2013 @ 11:16 AM

I get raccoons on my fourth floor balcony. Now I'm going to slam the glass door shut every night in terror.

If it's not carefully clipped shut, the cat can open our screen door.

Racoons scare the bejeezus out of me. There's something sinister about them. Good luck, Ryan G.

As a former Toronto resident now living in Pickering it seems clear from this vantage point that the megacity is the worst thing to happen to Toronto. The suburbs (Etobicoke and Scarborough) seem to be at war with the downtown. And with this current mayor it's more obvious than ever that the suburbs resent those who live in old Toronto.

Etobicoke needs its own mayor like the old days.

Nothing makes me more livid than the current propaganda from the big telecom companies claiming that US competition will take jobs from Canadians.

Bell has shipped how many help desk jobs to India?

Rogers outsourced how many help desk and IT jobs overseas?

Telus, too... jobs to Philippines and India.

They're all three rip-off artists. This propaganda campaign just makes me hate them even more.

Seems funny I didn't hear anything a few years back when TD Bank & Royal Bank swooped into the states and picked up all the in trouble banks & saving and loan companies for a song.Seems the infostucture was all there built by Americans and the 2 Canadian banks capitalized on them for next to nothing. It appears you are the only one that is disgusted. The facts are that it was not a classy move, but if we hinder free speech, our society suffers.

@Mississauga Phil

The lack of outcry is probably because it was so classless and insensitive most of us have just labelled it ridiculous and discarded it.

Some people are stupid.

August 20, 2013 @ 12:40 PM

@Phil - I'd be willing to wager you aren't the only one disgusted by that letter. There seemed to be a lot of negative reaction to it, based on what I've read. In fact, I don't think I read a single story or comment that was pleased about that letter.

August 20, 2013 @ 12:42 PM

The "slanegirl" incident is becoming quite controversial. For those not in the know, the synopsis is a 16 or 17 year old girl was photographed at an outdoor concert performing "intimate" acts on a couple of guys.

She has been relentlessly investigated by the online mob, her identity revealed, and the pictures posted everywhere. One report I read indicates she has been hospitalized and sedated. No one seems to care who the guys were. No one is shaming them.

The other recent development is that police are now investigating this from the perspective of child pornography, since she is a minor, meaning there could be serious reprecussions for the individual that took the photos, and those who retweeted them. etc.

Things are getting complicated (and uglier) in the online world.

August 20, 2013 @ 1:03 PM

I think Free Speech needs to actually learn what free speech even means. It seems it has been bastardized into people believing they can say anything they want and never face any consequences. Fact is, it is a disgusting thing to say and even more to write and send to someone. And it is actually free speech to say as much and to shame the person for such disgusting thoughts. It isn’t a crime (although suggesting killing the child as an option is narrowly avoiding a crime) but it doesn’t mean the letter writer should be free to act like nothing is wrong.

Should the writer goes to prison? No, that’s what free speech allows. But should they be exposed for the piece of dirt that they are? Yes. That’s what happens when you spread crap. You’ll stink.

August 20, 2013 @ 1:12 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Free Speech -'re going to defend such a disgusting attack on this poor kid by citing free speech laws....maybe someone should euthanize you as you sound as mentally challenged as any autistic child...

August 20, 2013 @ 1:12 PM

@Corey, never heard of "slanegirl" until you mentioned it, somehow. Shitty about the gender bias. Online mob mentality is just terrifying.

Also a shame that society is so uptight about sex to begin with. So she made a mistake. That's a really stupid reason to go out of your way to do your best to ruin her life.

@ Corey
No doubt the person who shot the video and the people who've taunted this girl are dirt bags - as are the guys involved. However, the girl does bare some responsibility. She performs these acts on TWO guys in a public place/concert. I know some people will jump all over me for stating it but it we can be held accountable for our actions.

August 20, 2013 @ 1:42 PM

@Ben Vidal: I too hope that blind Dave returns. I can't blame him if he doesn't though.

@BO: Agreed! I get a kick out of their propaganda commercials. The more competition there is for my consumer dollar, the better!

@Free Speech: I find it to be an absolutely disgusting act. That fucking cowardly bitch didn't even bother signing her name. To be honest I'm shocked it wasn't labelled a hate crime.

@Markosaar: I wish we were more European in that regard, We really need to stop treating sex as a taboo subject. It's 2013 for crying out loud. Knowledge is power after all.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the cop being charged with second-degree murder. I can't say I'm surprised (public outcry) but I doubt he will be convicted.

My gym decided to change all the shower curtains so they now have a "window" about should height (I'M 6 feet) I find this really weird. Is running water and a closer curtain not a big enough hint that someone is in there?

Also going for laser eye surgery next month. I've been looking forward to that for a long time.

I was not defending the issue. I said it was classless statement, but it is still free speech. By you stating near the same statement that you are defending is also classless.

@ Argie - This may surprise you, but I agree. The young "lady" in question is 17. While still considered a minor, she is old enough to know that performing fellatio on two men in a mosh pit at an Eminem concert is probably no the best idea. I am by no means a prude, I agree that we need to take a bit more of a lax attitude towards sex, but c'mon, use some common sense....I'm sure there were washrooms, or a out of the way corner somewhere if she really couldn't wait till after the concert.

That being said, I also agree with mark that it's no reason to ruin the girls life.

August 20, 2013 @ 1:54 PM

I'm really enjoying Indie 88.1 FM.

Canadian artists that only get heard on CBC Radio 2 like Hey Rosetta or Hannah Georgas are getting played on Indie.

The biggest compliment I can give a radio station is they've become one of my presets.

August 20, 2013 @ 2:00 PM

@ Phil

No, it doesn't surprise me. You seem like a level-headed guy.

Matt stated "its 2013 for crying out loud". Since she's 17 and its 2013, those are two good reasons she should know not to do something like that in public (with all of the cell phones around).

August 20, 2013 @ 2:02 PM

@Argie: I was referring to sex still being taboo in society in general. Agreed she should've known better. But as others have said she shouldn't have her life ruined by it.

August 20, 2013 @ 2:09 PM

"Should have known better" ... and so what if there are pictures around -- that's just becoming more and more common nowadays with "sexting" (that word really irritates me). Politicians do it too as we all know.

My problem is the creeps online that hunted her down, and made her identity known to all.

August 20, 2013 @ 2:23 PM

@ mark
As I previously said, those that hunted her down are dirt bags - I'm not denying that.

@ Matt
I know what you were referring to. I also agree her life shouldn't be ruined by this.

August 20, 2013 @ 2:30 PM

@Argie @MissPhil

The term "taunt" isn't really strong enough for what happened to that young woman. The term is harassment or stalking.

Well what happens is that the people who dislike the person go to the end of the earth to destroy them. It's about more than saying "stupid whore", it's about destroying their life. These people will find out where that kid works and mail those photos to her job. They will find her family and friends & send those photos to everyone. They may post said photos in the area where she lives. Taunting is when you call a kid fat in the school yard. Persistent digital bullying is harassment. Plain and simple.

Should a young woman have to face that just because she made a mistake? We all make mistakes in life & youth do stupid things. Being accountable for your actions is one thing. Being incessantly harassed & tortured is another.

Let me put it into perspective in a situation you could relate too. At times you've made sweeping generalizations about Muslims. Not everyone likes your comments but generally it goes as far as us name calling and trolling each other. But what if someone like the Syrian Electronic Army came to this site. They're a pro Assad & pro Muslim group. They might well take offence to your comments and hang you out to dry at your church and at your workplace. Would that be fair? Of course not man. Just like it's unfair what is happening to that girl.

The bigger discussion is the the erosion of privacy online & people's lack of understanding about how insecure things really are. Online profiling & reconnaissance is a skill just like police use when dealing with physical evidence. Lots of these tormentors know enough to make them dangerous & then harass someone.

Did that girl make a mistake? Yes, she did. But she does not deserve to be harassed & stalked. Up next we'll see that photo up on The Dirty or some other revenge porn site. She may end up killing herself. Is that "fair punishment" for a single mistake in life? I certainly don't think so.

Anyone here ever heard of Vio Player? I downloaded a show online. It's in mp4 which usually works with my Windows Media player, but not this time. Apparently I need to download Vio Player to view it and I don't trust it. Never heard of it and not interested in getting a virus.

@ Mark - I am soooo not defending the assholes who made all that info public. but, quite frankly, you don't blow 2 dudes in the middle of a mosh pit if you aren't looking for attention. Let's not forget, within the next year (her birthday could be a week from now for all we know) this girl will be 18, which is an adult...she is not blameless in all of this.

The sad truth is, once she is officially 18, vivid entertainment will probably offer her a deal....

Also, when did I ever make disparaging remarks about Muslims...I'm usually busting other peoples chops for crap like that...I'm a live and let live kinda guy when it comes to race/religion/sexuality.

August 20, 2013 @ 2:52 PM

"Did that girl make a mistake? Yes, she did. But she does not deserve to be harassed & stalked. Up next we'll see that photo up on The Dirty or some other revenge porn site. She may end up killing herself. Is that "fair punishment" for a single mistake in life? I certainly don't think so. "

I agree 100%. I've never said she deserved this harassment.

BTW, I've never made "sweeping generalizations about muslims." I have criticized muslim terrorists. Is it wrong to knock people who blow up other people with bombs strapped to their bodies??? I don't think so.

So I enjoy TV. I don't watch 5 hours of TV a night, but I do enjoy good shows. I'm an HBO,TMN,AMC kind of guy. Most of the shows they put out are worth watching. The ones that aren't that great are usually better than whats on regular TV. With that said I used to enjoy True Blood. Once you get past the supposed "hot" male vampires, the show had some entertainment value. (side note about hot male vampires; vampires are dead so anyone wanting to have sex with a vampire is borderline necrophilia right?) Well that all changed with this past season and the terrible bag of shit that was the season finale. Anyone else watch True Blood and feel the same?

There is also a new show out called Ray Donovan? Liev Shcrieber plays this mob-esque guy who cleans shit up down in Hollywood. Essentially makes problems disappear, not the way the mob would by killing someone, but somehow he always has a plan. I'm at a loss of what to truly think about the show, it's about 8 episodes in. After the first 4 episodes I thought wow this show is great, but have found myself drifting in the latest 4 episodes. Same question as with True Blood anyone feel the same?

Lastly is Dexter. I've enjoyed this show from the start. After this many seasons there have been some not so stellar seasons, but other have been fantastic. This season I'm angry. I'm not angry with the show. I'm angry with myself for waiting each week to watch it knowing it's going to end soon. I should have just PVR'd the whole thing and used a Sunday to watch it all. Anyone else have thoughts on Dexter in general? Also am I wrong to think that the character Hannah is unbelievably hot? She's played by Yvonne Strahovski. The word WOW doesn't even cut it for her, I'd use stunning, but Facebook already bastardized that word.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:22 PM

I'm not saying you condone what is happening but I don't think we need to say "well it was stupid of her to do that". I want you to imagine that the internet & social media existed in the days of Woodstock. Thousands of people smoking illegal drugs & having "free love" would have ended up online, been mailed to their employers, friends, family, then linked forever on sites like Reddit or 4chan.

The above is to illustrate to the older generation the severity of this. Could your imagine if your personal stuff at Woodstock was sent to your employers? Or those times you got a "bit out of hand" at a Van Halen concert? Not everyone understands how vicious the internet can be.

Look at "revenge porn". It allows you to post photos of people along with links to their social media & even their addresses. Hunter Moore had a notorious site for some time which did just that. Fortunately, Mr Moore took it upon himself to mock the most followed Twitter account of Anonymous. He no longer has an account (but that was sure one spectacular hack lol).

I'm not sure that many people really grasp how ugly & nasty shit gets online. It's not even bullying it's harassment and extortion. Our kids deserve more than this.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:32 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Ben - Love Dexter, I've followed it since season 1. Yvonne Strahovski (Hanna) is also the voice and character model for Miranda Lawson in the Mass Effect Video game series. They actually get her facial expressions quite well, only difference is Miranda is a brunette.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:37 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Irvine - Then maybe we need to teach our kids not to put all the details of their life ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:38 PM

I think the character of "Hannah" on Dexter is brilliant. She does a great job of being that hot, dangerous female you know is the proverbial black widow.

I like Dexter but I admit some seasons were better than others. I've not watched this season yet. I also think the character "Debra Morgan" is very well acted. It's amazing that she was married to Dexter in real life & they got divorced but managed to keep it together on the show.

Be interesting to see how they end it.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:40 PM

@Ben -

I have TVs in my home, and I subscribe to Bell TV, but most days I seriously wonder why. I can't think of a single network television show that I watch with any regularity. Modern Family was one, but I find it peaked and doesn't really do it for me.

Recently I took Toronto Mike's advice, and got the entire "The Wire" DVD set. Have since watched every season, and have to agree it was a fantastic series. By the time I finished Season 5, I felt like I wanted to watch Season 1 all over again, just because the first time through, I didn't know the characters and probably didn't appreciate it as much because of that.

On Netflix I'm watching Arrested Development from Season One, and last night kicked off Season One, Episode One of "Breaking Bad".

The wife and I both loved "Dexter" but to be honest, our interested started to wane - we got part way through season 7, but something about the series in general just feels like it's run it's course and should probably have wrapped up entirely some time ago. I respect series that have a short run and don't feel the need to keep going past it's prime (Ricky Gervais' The Office and Extras comes to mind. Deadwood too).

August 20, 2013 @ 3:47 PM

@ Ben
Yvonne's not too shabby.

I started watching "Low Winter Sun" on AMC. They've only had 2 episodes thus far and while its not exactly action packed, Mark Strong is a terrific, under-rated actor.

Like our gal Yvonne, he's a foreigner playing a Yank.

Way back when, I thought about watching True Blood then Peter from Family Guy made a "one must be gay to watch True Blood" reference.. so I passed.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:50 PM

@ Corey

The only reason to subscribe to Bell or Rogers is live sports. That's about the only thing you can't get online. If you don't watch sports, get rid of it.

August 20, 2013 @ 3:58 PM

Yes, definitely we should teach our kids that, but to be honest it's not just kids doing it. And Phil, lots of time people think they are secure when they are not. Let me explain:

Companies will sometimes hire "ethical hackers" to test the security of their networks & their executives. It's about more than testing technical stuff. It's all about social engineering & web forensics. John Doe, the CEO may think he's entirely invisible online but chances he isn't. Once you start the reconnaissance and find one small piece of data, often you can run with it. Not long after you have a full profile & with that you can use spear-phishing or social engineering to extract information from the guy. Well people may not have that level of skills but they can easily learn some things that are the same.

Now in the situation above you are paid to do this & have signed a well detailed legal contract. But someone with a bit of skill and an intuitive mind could easily find you. And they could easily destroy you. I think we need laws to protect against this. I shudder at the rage these violated kids feel. They will grow up angry at things. They will use drugs to escape the hurt. Or, they'll just decide it's easier to go away like Rehtaeh Parsons.

That said I 100% support ALL hacktivists who unleash fury on these thugs. Tit for tat.

Go with what Argie says and try to cut the cord. I did very recently. I use a mix of Apple TV, iTunes, free online viewing & Netflix to watch stuff. I bought an indoor HD antenna for my TV so I can get local news. For the shows I really have to watch, I just buy the entire episode on Apple TV. If you need, get a US VPN and you can buy from iTunes USA.

Surprisingly, most networks carry quite a bit of their content on their websites. If you have a smart TV and a good pipe you can watch it. PS, over the air HD is better quality than on TV.

I'm following the Yankees - Blue Jays game, over the air, from Buffalo's channel 67.1. A locally owned/operated affiliate of METV. Presented in letterbox on my old analog TV, with a $60 signal converter, bought at Sears. (The early score is 1-0 for the Jays. A base runner at 3rd base runs across home plate during a messed up pitch.)
After the game WBBZ will have two of their summer season prograns, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, followed by The Addams Family. Later it will return to its regular network schedule of Perry Mason and Kojak.

You need to subscribe to the subreddits you're interested in and avoid the front page.

For example, there's a subreddit for Toronto, the show Girls, The Sopranos and Today I Learned. There would be no cats or piercings there.

I assume you're referring to the Toronto Cop?

The letter to the family of the Autistic boy was truly disgusting and I don't think it will take long to track down cretin that wrote it.

On twitter @brocksandwich #FTW

August 20, 2013 @ 10:26 PM

I read the entire letter to the family with the autistic boy and initially it didn't bother me that much. Why? Because I honestly cannot believe that it is real. Nobody could actually write that and mean it. It has to be some young person who didn't think twice about what they were actually doing and just did it to be a smartass. Absolutely incredible.

On another note, my least favourite new word....."selfie".

I'm not sure that many people really grasp how ugly & nasty shit gets online. It's not even bullying it's harassment and extortion. Our kids deserve more than this.
Quoted for truth.

Then maybe we need to teach our kids not to put all the details of their life ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Because the surest way to stop a kid from doing something is to ask them not to ;)

I think the consequences presently are too dire for youthful indiscretion/rebellion.

At 11 o'clock, I chose the mid-1950s dramatic series Passport to Danger over The Addams Family. One of the two leading women in tonight's episode was Carolyn Jones (as a sweet young blonde fiancee). It was her only appearance in that series. However, she is well remembered for her (very long black haired and married wife) Addams Family comedy series.
Both at the same time, from two over the air subchannels, on the very evening I mentioned one of the series here.
Sadly Ms. Jones died, prematurely, of Cancer. As did a number of other leading TV actresses known from the 1960s.

p.s. I try to steer clear of some of the unpleasant news topics.

August 20, 2013 @ 11:46 PM

Re: Finding the person that wrote that nasty letter

In theory it would be easy to find who wrote that letter. All you need is access to their homes & computers and forensics would find it very quickly. It's doubtful a clueless turd like that understands even basic computer security

But, in reality it's more difficult. Does the letter constitute a threat? Or is it just in very bad taste? "Free Speech" is often touted as a saviour but is it? All modern countries have some limits on "free speech" for obvious reasons.

August 20, 2013 @ 11:56 PM

I'll agree with your point, but with limits. Free speech, as I see it, is your right to spout off about whatever the hell nonsense you so choose versus my right to find that nonsense completely and totally moronic, and to say exactly that. The douche that wrote the letter, anonymously or otherwise, was within his/her rights to write that letter. And everyone here is well within their rights to call him/her a douche for doing it.

I don't care if I've never agreed with a word that came out of you in my life. Actually, I prefer the occasional strong disagreement--kind of refreshing, if we're being honest. But even if I think you to be an entirely disagreeable little s.o.b., I'll defend your right to be an entirely disagreeable little s.o.b.. Why? Because the alternative is some shmuck overreacting to the lyrics of the Fresh Prince theme song on a student's voicemail (link).

Does that mean everything's on the up? Hell no. And the family that got the letter reacted accordingly, for whatever that ends up being worth. If an idiot with a keyboard ends up being taken seriously, then now he's an idiot with a keyboard and a problem. Otherwise, he's just another braindead moron exercising his right to spout stupidity. We've put a few of those in office and no one's jumping up and down demanding a muzzle for them.

It is akin to sex ed. It is naive to think teenagers aren't going to have sex. It is intelligent and necessary to teach them about doing it safely.

To put it in simple terms: No, I won't tell my son not to have a Facebook account, but I will TEACH him what is appropriate for posting and what is not.

August 21, 2013 @ 8:51 AM

@Argie - re: "If your daughter is blowing two guys at a concert in public, somewhere along the way her parents have dropped the ball."

I'm not convinced this can be completely laid at the feet of the parents. We all rebelled against our parents at a certain age and did things we knew were wrong and went against everything they taught us. The difference is that acts of rebellion are becoming more heightened. I sincerely believe that "slanegirl" is not an isolated incident, or even an extreme one anymore, and in cases like this, I'm willing to point the finger at the internet and pornography. Here's why:

Boys seek out porn. In my day options were extremely limited. You might stumble across a stash of Playboy or Penthouse mags (or even if we were daring, shoplifting an issue). Now kids have easy access to the most extreme porn ever made, with the click of a mouse.

Porn HAS to continually become more extreme. You can only watch the same sex act so many times before it becomes boring. So what seemed shocking to us 25 years ago is quaint, and tame by today's standards.

So today's youth is watching stuff we never dreamed of, at an age where they're completely impressionable. Boys are putting tremendous pressure on the girls to provide the type of sex they're seeing on the net, and the girls are at an age where they'll do anything to be popular. All of these pressures have always existed for adolescents - it's just now the added confusing complication of the barrage of sexual material available is distorting them.

I think any parents that believe their kid isn't seeing this stuff, or isn't being pressured to some degree by it, are deluding themselves.

August 21, 2013 @ 9:24 AM

@ Corey
I wasn't blaming the parents "completely". However, I'm certain how they raised her contributed, even slightly, to her doing this.

I agree with everything you say about the internet and the effect of porn on our youth. That's why parents today have to be even more diligent than our parents were.

Where's Liz? I miss her sass.

@ Corey - Seconding Argie's notion on this one. Of course the increased availability of porn, and the increasing depravity of said porn is going to affect the situation. God, I remember when finding my friends Dad's stash of videos was like finding the ark of the we have search engines...

But, when a 17 year old (almost an adult in her own right) decides it's a good idea to blow 2 guys in front of thousands of people, you do have to question those who helped form her judgement and decision making processes.

August 21, 2013 @ 11:13 AM

@Mississauga Phil,

No worries, I've done the same thing a couple of times here (and hopefully apologised too).

Re: today's Humble & Fred... I've probably been one of their biggest defenders, but holy hell the pity-party today was insufferable.

@ Phil - re: "... you do have to question those who helped form her judgement and decision making processes." Perhaps. Maybe even probably. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that slanegirl's parents are genuinely good parents who are now staring at each other in horror and disbelief wondering where things went wrong. .

August 21, 2013 @ 1:05 PM

This type of incident is far from an isolated incident & it's actually very common. It's just it rarely hits the news. Twitter is filled with the last messages of kids that gave up on life after being slut shamed, bullied or harassed.

As for violence and filth on the internet, oh there is a great deal more that most people realize. Shit, many seasoned internet users or IT guys have no idea what's really out there.

In a matter of minutes I could take you to places on the internet where people sell terrorist level weapons, offer services to murder someone & where child pornography is rampant. One site actually had a button to turn child porn images "on or off". Removal of this content is extremely difficult & time consuming. It's akin to trying to squish grasshoppers with your boot in a locust swarm.

Phil/Argie: Don't be too quick to condemn the parents of that kid. She may well have been given some type of drug that affected her behaviour. "Science" continues to make stronger more destructive drugs. I was watching a film called "Hookers on Davie" a film about Vancouver prostitutes before they were shuffled out of Davie Village & The West End to the DTES. These were street sex workers not escorts & what was most shocking is how healthy they looked. They look much different than the skin & bones addicts covered in scabs that work the streets of the Downtown East Side. The reason is simple. Drugs. New model drugs are cheaper & nastier & easy to hide when put in something. That kid could have been a victim of it.

Hey Phil, even weed now comes in synthetic varieties. And lots of shit it put on that weed to make it grow faster. I don't think the gangs that distro the stuff are concerned about quality control. Not long ago some kid took a hit of E and it turned out to be pure heroin. She's dead.

August 21, 2013 @ 1:40 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Corey/Irv - As my son is 5, I haven't had to deal with these types of problems yet. Perhaps she was a Sunday school student who had something put in her drink, I don't know.

August 21, 2013 @ 2:48 PM

I suppose we're all just speculating here - as none of use know the family or the exact circumstances of what happened.

What I do know is that today in society more and more young people go by a live-for-today philosophy (i.e. let the consequences be damned). Ten years ago, the only neck tattoos I saw were on hardcore criminals. Nowadays, almost every girl I see has a visible tatt (and God knows what other ones she has). That's just one of many examples of it. This generation has been raised by the laissez faire, just be happy boomers. God forbid, they say "no" to their kids. Golly, that might upset them, don't you know.

Thanks to the crap on the internet and the technology in illegal drugs, as Irv mentioned, parents have to do a 180 - and be more proactive in the raising of their kids. The attitude of "oh, they're going to have sex anyway" or "they're going to do drugs anyway" won't cut it.

August 21, 2013 @ 3:09 PM

Hey look at this stupid person that let pornographic pictures of her be taken:

The comments make me irate. She clearly showed poor judgement by trusting her husband. Trusting your spouse is for morons.

Drum roll please!!!!

I'm having a great day and this little beautie made me laugh my ass off. Post is from a guy(yes a guy) that I went to highschool with.

"End of an era!!!! After 13 years of being together. Chantel Doyama and I have decided, that it's time for us to move on with our lives, but in different directions. So with this note, I'm announcing our separation. We will always have a love for each other and for our amazing son Kash. We both wish each other well in the future, and are remaining friends. Thank you to everyone who has ever been there for us through the good times and the bad. We love you all."

15 comments of I'm here for you and aww so sad for you. But you know what no likes. So I liked it. Apparently this wasn't a likable post, because I just checked and he de-friended me.

My loss?

August 21, 2013 @ 4:02 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Ben - definitely a like-able post. I akin it to the "divorce party" that Jack White threw.

If you're going to announce an amicable separation in this manner, why wouldn't your friends "like" it. It shows your proud of how maturely they are handling the situation.

I'd say you've lost nothing...

August 21, 2013 @ 4:17 PM

Haha. Congrats. Not to cheapen your victory, but maybe he also deleted prior people for liking it. Makes a stupid post and then arbitrarily mets out "justice" for standard Facebook behaviour.

August 21, 2013 @ 4:19 PM

The odd time I leave my Mom's basement Argie, I don't see very many tat's on the necks & faces of people. Tattoo's are just this generation's thing. In the 90s it was piercings. It certainly doesn't indicate a person is part of the criminal element. The world is filled with "Banksters" and I don't see too many of them with tat's. Does Obama have ink?

When you say this it reminds me of the all too frequent "if you ride a Harley Davidson" you must be a criminal. Walk into a dealership & most of the buyers are 40-50 something males with well paying jobs who simply enjoy touring. Same for wearing leather. You wear it because it's your body armour not to look "bad ass".

I'd bet a good sum that most parents don't even know how to identify most drugs (weed excluded). And they probably think back to their high school drug dealer. He sold some hash and LSD on the side, but he grew out of it & now has a good job. Even the low level dealers working the block usually get their product from one source (a source that's usually some unsavoury type of people). The distro chain is very different & it's big business.

Maybe we need drug education that tells the real story instead of cutesy ad's? I've seen agencies that take kids for evening walks in Van's Downtown Eastside. Nothing opens your eyes like meeting a 18 year old hooker picking away at the imaginary crank bugs in her skin. Or spending some time as a community volunteer at First United Church & seeing the REAL reality of what drugs do. Oh and those bed bugs crawling on the sheets? Oh well...

The first step in solving the drug issue (and the online bullying) issue is actually having most parents know what's actually going on.

August 21, 2013 @ 5:24 PM

@Ben - definitely a prize winning FB post!
What a doofus. This is a perfect example of a inappropriate comment. If I'm this guy's close friend, I want to hear about his separation personally, not over social media. If I'm only a casual "FB" friend that hasn't seen this guy since highschool, then I don't know his wife or kids, and so i dont give a fuck if he's getting separated or not.

August 21, 2013 @ 5:39 PM

I can sort of understand why people on the left or who worked for gov't liked this man. He was, after , the consummate believer in taking what you can get from the gov't, ie: taxpayer. He always lived in subsidized housing until he was powerful enough in politics to live in gov't paid for housing as an opposition leader. But honestly, to me, it seems as if we are putting this man upon a pedestal to celebrate the biggest loser in Candian politics. Never one a thing other than to become the leader of a party that wants gov't subsidized housing for everyone. Not slamming Jack, just wondering why the over the top recognition of the man. Do we put up statues of all our PM's as well.

August 22, 2013 @ 1:20 PM

So Bradley Manning now wants to live as a woman.

Wow, isn't that the same tactic Klinger used in MASH to get out of the army? I don't recall it working for Klinger....

August 22, 2013 @ 1:58 PM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: I didn't get if the government is actually going to pay or not? Awww Klinger that comment brought a smile.

August 22, 2013 @ 2:33 PM

I'm no fan of Jack Layton but he did not "always live" in subsidized housing. He lived in the co-op for approx. 5 years. I'm not supporting what he did but at least be honest with the dates/timeline. Did he get taxpayer funded accommodation in Ottawa. Yes, as every other politician does. FYI, one of the most frugal politicians is Elizabeth May of the Green Party. She claimed something like 24K for the entire year (including secondary residence).

Your statement that Jack Layton was the biggest loser in Canadian politics is all about your political slant. Even his political detractors admit he was a skilled and very saavy, especially with the "common guy" thing.

And Layton did "win". While at the helm he did attract the attention of Canadians & legitimized the party. That's the job of a leader whether you like their political slant or not. Politics is 100% about winning. I suspect with Mulcair as the leader the party will revert back to it's backwater status.

Finally the idolization of Jack Layton is more Toronto Centric than it is a Canadian thing. Why is Jack so popular in Toronto? Well Jack is a left wing guy & Toronto is a left wing city. He was quite vocal about city issues & until his run for the NDP he carried himself as a common man. Further, Jack Layton married an immigrant. In a city like Toronto that prides itself on it's multicultural nature & the ability for all races to get along, that's a big deal.

Just imagine when David Suzuki dies. The days of morning, the tributes, the massive funeral, etc...

The Toronto media certainly has its darlings and they all sway to the left.

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Don't worry...when Ford OD's or drinks himself to death, Etobicoke will build one in his memory.....

August 22, 2013 @ 4:21 PM

So what if certain Canadians mourn Suzuki when he dies? And who cares if they mourn Jack Layton. Isn't that a person's choice?

When Peter Lougheed, the father of modern Alberta (and a Conservative) died, he was given a very public funeral. It was televised and even the PM attended. I don't recall any outrage at the public spectacle & mourning of his death by the "left".

It might be a little easier to swallow your opinions if they weren't just robot partisan babble designed to offend. You care little for the accomplishments of the person; you only care about where they are on the political spectrum.

I could give a rats ass about Mr Layton personally. But hey, if people want to mourn him, then let them. It's not your place to decide what people should believe in.

August 22, 2013 @ 4:39 PM

Who gave the family permission to use public property to display a statue of someone who was not admired by all Torontonians? Layton was elected with a 100 + because Quebec had had enough of the Bloc Quebecois and the Liberal Party, not because of Layton's or the NDP's appeal. Don't believe me, check out today's NDP numbers in Quebec. Give me a break!

August 22, 2013 @ 4:56 PM

I think when someone commits themselves to public service, when they die people should be respectful, regardless of political leanings, and respect those who wish to mourn. Like they did with Maggie Thatcher for example.

August 22, 2013 @ 4:59 PM

Sorry but equating seats won = popularity is total nonsense at it's best. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of our political system knows the "first past the post" system is flawed & not representative of popularity. In the last election 40% of voters choose the Conservatives. 31% of voters chose the NDP. Anyone who isn't consumed with "political emotion and drama" would acknowledge it as an "impressive" showing & also realize a substantial portion of the vote came from outside Quebec.

Whether your biased brain wants to accept it or not, people liked Jack Layton. Lots of them. If the citizens of Toronto are fine with the statute then so be it. ITS THEIR CITY.

@Corey: I don't think a funeral is a place to protest for anyone. Whether you liked the person or not, they were a Mom/Dad/Sis/Bro to their immediate family. Those people deserve time to mourn peacefully. Protesting funerals puts you on the same level as the Westboro Baptist Church & even the Hells Angels & KKK spoke out against that.

August 22, 2013 @ 5:43 PM

$350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue? $350,000.00 for a statue?

Is there a Lougheed statue anywhere in Edmonton? Did the PM give him a state funeral? Did the CBC commit the air time for PL as they did for Jack?

Te answer to those questions are all "NO". There's your double standard.

As for the Thatcher funeral, the way those feeble minded, morally damaged protesters behaved was deplorable. It reflected more on the left than it did on Thatcher.

If people want to morn personally for their political hero - that's fine. I just wish the publicly funded broadcaster wouldn't force it down our throats.

Jack's passing was Canada's version of the Princes Diana circle-jerk. Is he all we have?

August 22, 2013 @ 7:48 PM

guess we have solved poverty, hunger, racism, sexism, homelessness when socialists / unions spend this on a statue.

So where is your scorn for the Senate dude? Where is your scorn for the $3.1 billion the government cannot account for? Where is the scorn for the gargantuan spending on that G8/G20. I read the other day the government paid $50K for a gazebo. Or how about said Federal party in power that allegedly used taxpayer money to spread party shill?

Why no condemnation for that? I'll tell you why because you're a robot partisan that is comfortable excusing the party YOU support, but has no issue attacking the one you disagree with.

You know you've given me an idea. When all you street thugs out there want to mug someone, choose a Conservative support. Wear a Harper mask & your victim will happily hand over his wallet to you (and praise you during the robbery).

To quote Chris Rock "if you can't think for yourself you're a fucking idiot". Word.

August 22, 2013 @ 7:54 PM

@Corey, you're being ironic with that bit about Thatcher, right? Just checking!

August 22, 2013 @ 8:06 PM

LOL, so let me get this straight Argie, you're upset at Jack Layton because STEPHEN HARPER gave him a state funeral.

And the publicly funded national broadcaster should NOT televise the death of the Leader of the Official Opposition. LOL.

BTW, if I recall the Lougheed funeral was televised & on the radio. I'm very sure the CBC in Alberta took part in that.

Just face it Argie. This isn't about anything other than your own political leanings & your own bitter anger. You're angry because you can't shove your agenda down everyone's throat. LOL.

August 22, 2013 @ 8:09 PM

And so the insults start.....

August 22, 2013 @ 8:26 PM

So pointing out inconsistencies in your "facts" is now insulting you? Yet you remain incredibly reticent to attack the party you support, but willingly "open fire" on your adversaries

Jack Layton didn't ask for a state funeral Argie. He had already died. Stephen Harper gave him one. The CBC is Canada's National Broadcaster. I would think that the duty of a national broadcaster would be to televise the funeral of the "Honourable Leader of the Official Opposition"

I had no problem with a state funeral for Jack Layton. I had no problem with my national broadcaster televising it. I'd expect the same for Stephen Harper or any person who committed their life to public service. But if you don't like the Layton memorial, don't go see it. And while you're complaining about "your taxes" paying for it I could counter by saying my taxes probably pay for something that benefits you & not me.

You don't like Layton? Good for you. Go about your business and find something else to occupy your time. Stop being so petty and incendiary.

@Cheryl - you're right, the Diamondbacks did loose last night; I'm sorry I know you're a fan. Hockey does start soon. I'm a Leafs fan, and you The Habs, but we still have being excited in common.

So you like Primus do you? I guess that worjs for you. I go out of the gta for work a lot, and Primus doesn't really cover Barrie and further north. Since I need my rogers cell phone, and my townhouse comes with basic Rogers cable. cable. So I get an upgraded channel package at an already reduced price, plus the discount of the bundle so it's a pretty sweet deal.

If I ever find myself consitantly staying in the gta, I might look into primus.

@ Markosaar: It's H&F schtick to fake whine like this, and it made for a great bit with their buddy Alan Cross. I love when Howard goes off and feigns (spelling?) like he has been snubbed, again makes for great show content, Indie 88.1 has had a lot of good free press, especially from H&F.

If people want to talk about massive wastes of tax payers dollars. How about we judge our provincial and Federal governments on proroguing parliament whenever they see fit. or whenever they have to face a scandal. Talk about losing faith in any form of the political process.

I forgot our MP's having the summer off must have been so tough they need to regroup for another month or two. If this was teachers people would be up in arms.

Or how about mr gutless proroging just in time for the christmas holidays.

Lastly I have to laugh. Trudeau admits to smoking pot. Certain people go bonkers over this. Especially some posters in the the globe and mail. The same people that went around defending the possibility that Doug Ford was allegedly a hash dealer and involved with low level drugs. Saying it was only hash and he did it years ago. If the stink of hypocrisy gets any higher I might get stoned off the fumes.

Don't even get me started on how any government in a 1st world country is actually getting stiffer on punishment for smoking pot. I think the person that should be most worried is Freddie P; his best friend sweater Steve Harpo will be sending SWAT out to close places down that have any resemblance to a tin palace and tiki hut by the time 2015 hits.

@Rick C: as I said, it was very funny today. Yesterday the bit just went on ... way too long. Like well over ten minutes, and then kept being brought up again.

The base salary (base) for a Canadian MP is 160K a year. That's about 75 bucks an hour. Add in expenses. Then kick in a gold plated pension that'll get you 41K a year after 6 whole years of service. You could, in theory, work two terms & retire with the equivalent of an income of the "average Canadian salary".

Funny, I often hear people screaming blue murder about those "lazy civil servants" who get paid 18 bucks an hour to clean a toilet. I'll pay a toilet cleaner 18 bucks an hour over paying some politician 160 grand a year to talk out of his ass.

Sorry, but Trudeau has done nothing to convince me he's not the bubbleheaded dandy that I pegged him as when he first entered politics.

Firstly, who's "gone bonkers" over his calculated "admission"? Every reaction I've seen so far has been a mild shrug.

I'm assuming Trudeau's still advocating legalization, not decriminalization (who can keep up, since he's been all over the map on this). Legalization is naive, and fraught with so many complications that even Justin can't be serious about it. This is a play to the youth that would go nowhere if, heaven forbid, this twerp gets elected. Nothing more.

@ Ben - This country will go to hell in a handbasket if Trudeau is our next PM...

August 23, 2013 @ 8:11 AM

@ Ben
To me its no surprise JT admitted he tried it. Its the standard answer every politician (left or right) has to give when asked if they've ever tried it.

I think there would be a reaction from the right if he said "hell yeah, I tried it and I loved it. In fact, I still toke about a few times a week."

@ Corey: Take a look at some of the commentary on the globe or the star or Huffington post. There is a contingent of people losing their mind on this saying "he's a law breaker, he can't be trusted".

I agree that full on legalization is fraught with many complications. Can you not agree that if the US is making steps toward this, that Canada being the country it is could not do the same thing.

My original point was that Canada is currently the only progressive first world country getting tougher on pot. If Slovakia is pushing for legalization, why can't Canada.

Since Harper took control there has been a 41 % increase in arrests for pot possession. That number is over 400K similar to the population of Regina and Saskatoon.

Why is it that 66% of Canadians expect marijuana to be legalized within the next 10 years. That's the majority of Canadians. So why is it Harper wants to crack down on it?

@ Phil: Thanks again for making a blanket statement about Trudeau. I'm surprised you didn't use your repetitive line of "He's spoiled brat who grew up with a silver spoon blah blah blah, who has done nothing with his life". I'm still waiting for an answer from you regarding Harper. I believe it was 15 open mikes ago I asked what Harper had accomplished by the time he was Trudeaus age.

One would think Phil that you would be up in arms with any form of government trying to limit your chances of lighting one up with your son in the future.

@ Argie: By your own admission there are people on the right that would say you aren't a true conservative. There is also a large contingent that's saying you are a law breaker and you shouldn't be trusted. You also aren't qualified to lead anything or be in charge of anything because you partake a few times a week.

I could care less if he said he smoked once, twice, a hundred times or no times. I think that the responses from Harper and "fly me away on a private jet" Mackay are hilarious.

@ Ben - My son?? Really??? I have stated many's not that I'm going to encourage my kid to smoke pot. I simply stated that, when he is AN ADULT, I hope we have the kind of relationship where he would not be afraid to come to me with something like that.

...and yeah...Trudeau is a spoiled little silver spoon kid milking off his fathers "legacy"...such as it is.

I'm not a huge fan of Harper or anything...i just think Trudeau is in way over his pretty boy head...

August 23, 2013 @ 10:05 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Phil: I know that's what you want. My point is that you might not get it if Harper continues to force feed his view on pot down canadians throats.

August 23, 2013 @ 10:43 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Ben - I'm not having any trouble finding it now...

And Trudeau's comments were for the specific reason of getting the "oh my God he's so cool" response out of a disinterested young voting base. It reeks of the old "but some of my best friends are black" line that "cool" politicians used during the civil rights movement.

The guy just comes across as such a slimeball...
