2014 Chevrolet Impala Test Drive Review

Test Driving a 2014 Chevrolet ImpalaI was invited to participate in the Chevrolet Impala Drive Event this week. I've already written about the golf and the whiskey tasting, and I'll soon write about my tour of the GM plant in Oshawa, but this entry is about the 2014 Chevrolet Impala we drove from Oshawa to Fenelon Falls and back.

When I think Impala, I think cop car. Now that I've spent some time with the new Impala, I think it's a sexier version of the new Ford Taurus.

It looks great, drives silently and wonderfully and has the roomiest trunk I've ever seen. I could fit at least three hockey bags in here.

The standard Impala's MSRP is $28,445. The version I drove had MyLink pairing my smart phone and making it easy to surf media and the navigation system with natural voice commands. Elvis and I listened to a lot of Lithium 34 on XM.

If you think you know the Impala, you might want to look again.

Now that's a photogenic automobile!

The competition can't match the Impala in terms of charisma. It's a 3.6-liter GM V-6 thing of beauty.

If you want a full-size sedan, and despite what the young people think, there's still great demand for a full-size sedan, I'd put the Impala at the top of your list.

I read that they used to sell 70% of all Impalas to fleets.... hence the "cop car" comment and and fact you often rent one. They're now flipping that, only selling 30% to fleets.

I always buy GM like my father before me and the Impala might very well be my next car.

GM lost me with the crap of the 80's and 90's. One Jimmy and 2 Blazers later I am never going back.
I loved GM cars and trucks, but they put out so much junk that I am a Ford guy now.

When we shopped for our last car we liked some of the North American vehicles we looked at but what kills North American cars is the confusing way they line up their vehicle options and the interest rates on financing. GM and Ford aren't producing anything that deserves some of the rates they ask. But to each their own.

Lithium is on my XM hot bar...great channel.

Buy GM or Ford, but buy domestic if you can.

@No Dope

You don't meant to buy domestic, you mean buy "made in canada".

They make the Impalas in Oshawa. That's reason enough to recommend it!

Has anyone noticed how most car companies this year are all making their 2014 models with the big open mouth grill and slim head and tail lights? Kind of how Aston Martin's cars look? I really like the new direction these companies are going with their designs, can anyone shed some light on why they're doing this? I've never seen this done before.

June 4, 2013 @ 7:28 PM

Yes they make the cars in Oshawa, but I bet you the parts are manufactured off shore.
Same goes for the Japanese cars made here. It would be so much better if North America could make the parts?

I saw them making the Impala in Oshawa today... takes about 28 hours to make one.

But Speysidephil is right in that parts come in from over 40 different countries.

About to marry a beautiful woman, test driving new cars, playing golf with your best friend, and tasting single malt whiskeys in an exclusive club.

It sounds like you need some cheering up, Mike.

I thought your true love was Ford, given the Escape trials etc. Just busting your you know whats. Looks kind of like the Volt from the pictures. I'm with Speyside, was turned off by my early experiences with GM products, have had Ford, VW, Toyota's, Honda CRV and Dodges over the last few years, and I have to say my preference is for the Japanese, always feel super tight even after several 100,000 Kms, and the pricing is very simplified, as with VW. They don't give you 15 different levels of trim/options, usually 3-4 max.

I did a program with Chevy in Ottawa / Gatineau last November and it was pretty awesome. I couldn't say no to this one after experiencing that one.

Ford's providing me with a car for my wedding and July camping trip. I still love the Ford folks!

I have absolutely no complaints. Life is good....

June 4, 2013 @ 9:24 PM

@Glen nailed it - good for you, Mike. Proof that sometimes - just sometimes - the good guys get to finish first.

Picked up a new Ford Fusion last week. Great car. Replaced a 2010 Camry (240KM). Better styling and interior on the Ford. Let's see if it lasts. Camry had oil changes, tires 2x and brakes 1x. That's it. Tough act to follow.

@ Toronto Mike,

Car for the wedding eh? Jeez, I can't even get a car from my bride when I ask her ;)
Still not DJ'ing your wedding.

Jason from Sudbury

Ford all the way!

Glad to see you enjoyed the impala.

I have Cruze and I absolutely love it. It's a great car.

June 5, 2013 @ 12:57 AM

Like a few of you, hard for me to look at any GM product and think it might be good. Bad experience and being treated like crap from GM made me go to Honda and I have never looked back. For my money, this Impala doesn't even come close to an Accord.

Elvis is quite excited about the diesel Cruze that's coming soon. He says that will be his next car.

@ Andrew

Just something bigger and cleaner and newer to get to and from the wedding.... unfortunately, I don't get to keep it.

I drove a Toyota Echo for 7 years. Thing went through hell and back, and I still only had to do minimal maintenance. Tires, breaks, etc...the stuff you need to do.
But I had a chance to upgrade to a Cruze late last year (my wife works for GM). I miss my Echo, but so far I really like the Cruze.
But it has XM/Sirius (Lithium and the Verge kick ass), and really, that was all I wanted.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:04 AM

@Mike and Elvis

The dealership up here in Brampton has the new diesel cruze for sale.

June 5, 2013 @ 12:24 PM

Thanks Matt!
