Tom Cheek Wins 2012 Ford C. Frick Award

Ford C. FrickTom Cheek has won the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award. The Ford C. Frick Award is the highest honour for baseball broadcasters.

I've been rallying fans to vote Cheek in for eight years so I'm incredibly pleased he's finally won. Tom Cheek called Blue Jays games since day one, calling 4,306 of them in a row. During that time Toronto won two World Series championships and a few additional division pennants. He was the voice of my summers.

Sadly, we lost Tom far too early. If you remember Tom Cheek, you'll be happy to learn I've archived all of Tom Cheek's Greatest Hits. Click over and remember the glory days of Blue Jays baseball. And if you don't remember Tom Cheek, click on over and see what you missed.

Congrats to Shirley Cheek and the Cheek family. Every summer, I miss Tom Cheek more and more.

That's great news! I've voted for him every year. Tom & Jerry's voices were the sounds of summer. I was sad when Tom passed...I'm glad that Jerry is still at it and I hope he gets the chance to make the WS game-winning call someday soon.

I just saw the news online and headed over here to see what you wrote, Mike. This is a well-deserved win for Tom Cheek and the millions of fans who enjoyed him calling Blue Jays games for so long.

Awesome news!

James_in_to on twitter uploaded Cheek calling the bottom of 9th in 93 in it's entirety. Shame 4 year old me doesn't remember any of it.

Baseball is the game I grew up with on radio. Listened to 590 CKEY Toronto Maple Leaf (AAA) games with Joe Crysdale and Hal Kelly. To this day, I can enjoy a ball game on radio as much (or maybe even more) than television. Tom was great! Jerry and Allan do a great job too.

Congrats and best wishes to Tom's family on a well deserved award.

Finally, very well deserved.
Jerry should be next in a few years?

FABULOUS NEWS!!!! I am so happy for Tom and his family and delighted that he will finally be recognized for how great of a broadcaster he was. Jerry is next!

When I was eight, I recorded the radio broadcast of game 6 of the '93 World Series in its entirety. I'll have to dig out the tapes and listen once again.

Well done to everyone who kept voting for Tom year after year, he couldn't have made the final ballot without all of the support.

It's about damn time.
