Looks Better

Only have time for a quick glance at this list Mike, but it certainly looks better. Seems more representative of what 'NY was playing in the 90s, and less representative of what the current music selecters have chosen as being representative of the period - or should I say representative of what they want to play now of what 'NY was playing in the 90s?

James Edgar

Looks way better.I was shocked that your #3.Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose was not on the CFNY list. It's one of my favourite alltime songs.

Good work Mike.Better you than me :)

Toronto Mike

Somehow, the Edge voters completely overlooked Badmotorfinger.

I went with three tunes from that amazing album: Jesus Christ Post, Outshined and Rusty Cage.

Joanne

No Stone Roses tho?

Glad to see Toadies, Portishead, Breeders, Beck, PUSA and Primitive Radio Gods (man, I love that song! #166) made the NEW list.

Nice job!

Sarah

Looks much more like a list made by someone who was actually listening to radio in the 90's and less like a list made by someone who was listening to Barney the Purple Dinosaur in the 90's.

September 19, 2009 @ 9:08 PM

Toronto Mike

Love Spreads could have easily made this list.

This project wasn't as easy as I expected.

And yeah, the Toadies had to make this list. Possum Kingdom is awesome. And I too dig that Primitive Radio Gods song, as you see.

Ryan

Good List.

Closing Time though??

Hmmmm.....

brian

got you where i want you twice 164 & 181. that's cheating. change the title to 199.

September 19, 2009 @ 10:49 PM

Toronto Mike

#164 has been updated. Everybody wins!

September 19, 2009 @ 10:53 PM

Gary

Anyone who puts Our Lady Peace on a list loses all credibility.

September 20, 2009 @ 8:37 AM

Mike from Lowville

Well, 152 to 195 certainly makes the list more in line with my thoughts. That Ed-a-jaw list was whacked!

September 20, 2009 @ 8:45 AM

Buffaloboymike

Mike I only have one problem....PEACHES? Really? How Bout another Cure or Depeche Mode song. Presidents of USA probably most talentless group ever.

September 20, 2009 @ 12:41 PM

Toronto Mike

@Buffaloboymike

This is an entry unto itself. Is "Peaches" a good tune?

I know this much. When I hear it, I sing along and I'm happy. Does that mean it's good? Maybe...

Does anyone else out there like Peaches?

September 20, 2009 @ 12:55 PM

Mike from Lowville

I like Peaches, especially when their FREE!

September 20, 2009 @ 1:03 PM

Ajax Mike

Millions of Peaches, peaches for me!

September 20, 2009 @ 2:06 PM

Pat

This list needs to be ripped, burned and traded via the underground. 8^)

September 20, 2009 @ 7:35 PM

felix

Good job, Mike! But the correct title for #166 is, "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand"

September 21, 2009 @ 2:03 AM

Toronto Mike

@felix
I always did have trouble with that title. I've repaired the error.

September 21, 2009 @ 7:57 AM

Wayner

You can never win with your own "Top's List". I like it and will use to download some songs that I've missed along the years...

...Marilyn Manson though?

September 21, 2009 @ 8:06 AM

Fun post. My thoughts:

1. LOL Sarah!

2. No Gary, credibility is confirmed with OLP. Love 'em or hate 'em, they were all over 102.1 and the charts in the 90s.

3. Peaches for me - LOOKOUT!

September 21, 2009 @ 9:25 AM

Jason C

Hey Mike, I might have added Nautical Disaster.

September 21, 2009 @ 9:25 AM

TCN

OK Mike, which songs got the boot after the BNL additions?

September 21, 2009 @ 9:33 AM

Hector

I agree with Gary...any OLP just makes the list insignificant. The most over-rated Canadian band ever!

TCN - just because 102.1 played them doesn't mean they were good.

September 21, 2009 @ 9:41 AM

james

nice wrap-up list Mike. I would have added some Madchester stuff - Happy Mondays "Step On" ('90), Charlatans "The Only One I Know" ('90) or the Stone Roses "One Love" ('90).
Still, it's great to see Anthrax w/ PE, the Flys and Jesus Christ Pose all make it.

September 21, 2009 @ 10:34 AM

TCN

Hector: I agree completely. But don't these radio station lists involve sales and airplay in some fashion?

In my case, I dislike The Offspring. Intensely. But I acknowledge they were played a lot on this station, and have a place (sadly, more than one) on this list.

IOW, just because you don't like OLP doesn't mean 102.1 shouldn't list them.

September 21, 2009 @ 10:51 AM

Hector

OLP is Canadian. That's why they get so much air play. They have to fill their quota.

September 21, 2009 @ 11:46 AM

djmose

Thanks for the list!

Much better than what was aired.

I'd have to add 1996's Pretty Noose in there somewhere.

September 21, 2009 @ 11:57 AM

TCN

Oh, Hector. You didn't answer the question.

And I suspect there's more than CanCon requirements at work here.

Naveed - Platinum status x3
Clumsy - Diamond status
MMVAs - 10
Arguing with Hector - Priceless

September 21, 2009 @ 12:11 PM

Mark

I appreciate the nostalgia, but you may have went a bit overboard with 11 Hip songs in a list of 200.

September 21, 2009 @ 4:15 PM

Down Goes Brown

Call me a townie, but you need some GnR on the list. I can tell you wouldn't be into the overly arranged ballads, but surely you could find a spot for an old-fashioned rocker like "You Could Be Mine".

September 21, 2009 @ 4:20 PM

Jason C

Edge 102 list has 18 Hip tunes. Never too much Hip ;-)

September 21, 2009 @ 4:31 PM

Race_Coach

Havin' a hard time tracking down #133 Headstones - Smile and Wave and #148 Pure - Anna's a Speed Freak.

Any direction to (free?) MP3 would be appreciated.

September 23, 2009 @ 10:57 AM

Robbie

Awesome list. Shows me you really took some time creating this list. Like other users, there were some songs I wasn't particularly fond of on this list, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they were playing on every radio station at the time. With that said, I am disappointed that Metallica did not make the list. Their Black album was all over the radio.

And....

OLP sucks.

Peaches is an awesome song.

Closing Time is a good song that played in EVERY bar all over the country at last call.

Well done Mike :)
