100 Wedding Songs

WeddingI mentioned I was putting together a wedding playlist for my brother's wedding next month. I wanted 100 songs that were decent, wouldn't offend and had an appropriate theme for such an occasion. This wasn't as easy as it sounds, and to make things a little trickier, I capped the number of songs per artist at two.

Here's my initial stab at it. I've got a bit of time to perfect this before I cut the disc. If there's a song on this list you passionately disagree with, let me know in the comments. Conversely, if there's a song missing that you believe absolutely has to be there, chime in.

Without further ado, here are the Wedding 100, sorted alphabetically by artist.

Now for the hard part, the sequencing. One omission is Mary Mac by Great Big Sea.
Funny I had the same task on my hands a few weeks back to create a "Keep the Beat" set list for my War Child fundraiser, it also comprised 100 songs.

How fun is that? Great choices!! I read your post this afternoon and it generated alot of conversation between hubby and me. We had thought of alot of your selections. Here are a few variences:
DURAN DURAN / PERFECT DAY (This was our last song )

It's funny, but a lot of the songs on your list were seriously considered. Keep in mind, I assembled my entire list from songs already in my collection.

David Gray's "This Year's Love" should be there though... I'm going to add it. It's sweet as sugar and liked by everyone.

I've already got Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", so Lennon's version is disqualified.

Cake is out due to my personal bias.

Otherwise, good stuff! Keep it coming... I'm going to edit this entry to add the Gray.

April 19, 2006 @ 8:48 AM

I would have added "What A Good Boy" by the Barenaked Ladies. The live version that is available in their Greatest Hits album is absolutely great, it is one of my top 10 songs of all time. I sang that song through my cell phone to this girl I am trying to woo and she loved it. Or was it just me? LOL

April 19, 2006 @ 9:53 AM

Hi Mike:
Thanks for doing this for Steve and Vanessa.
You thought YOU were showing your age with "Cory Hart" - I surely could give mine away by admitting to not recognizing some of the songs on your list. But you are covering a large age span and I am sure we will all enjoy the tunes! Thanks again.

April 22, 2006 @ 9:43 PM

Hey, Mike...

New reader of your blog here. Foremost, I must say, excellent choice of songs. Overall, really cool.

I work in radio and one of the things that always cracks me up is a listener calling a radio station and dedicating a BAD song to his/her love. For example, I've heard people ask to send out "Heartbreaker" by The Stones to a girl who jilted them. Of course, this song about social injustice is quite lyrically inapropriate for this circumstance. I guess the title threw 'em.

Because I can tell from your list that you're obviously pretty astute at these sorts of things (TFF "Seeds Of Love", Smashing Pumpkins "Today" and several other clever choices), I was surprised to see a few tracks here.

The first one that comes to mind is Alice In Chains' "Heaven Beside You". Lyrically speaking, this might not be the best wedding song. If I recall correctly, this is a song about heroin addiction and the chorus reads "Like The Coldest Winter Chill. Heaven Beside You...Hell Within". Probably not the best love song on the list! ha!

There's aboslutely no reason why the reception shouldn't RAWK but I would recommend avoiding the lyrical obstacle of this one ending up on the video and viewed by the grandchildren many years later.

Also, I must take exception with Kenny Rogers "She Believes In Me". What the...?! An otherwise smart list of songs is marred by this choice, my friend. It is pure country-politan crap. Sure, a wedding should a bit sappy but...don't do that to your friends.

Great blog, man! Enjoy the wedding!

Your friendly music-snob,

April 23, 2006 @ 2:09 AM

Mike Boon

Rickman, I'm glad someone called me on the Kenny Rogers. That one is for our mom. You've got to read this to understand.

As for the Alice in Chains, you're bloody well right. I just love the band so much I was trying to find an appropriate AiC track. I think I'll switch up "Heaven Beside You" for "No Excuses". :-)

Faunie, I maxed out on Van Morrison and U2 for the "older" crowd - everything here is pretty sweet and subtle - I left "Closer" off the list.

April 23, 2006 @ 7:50 AM

Marlene (friend of steve and ness in case you didnt' know who I was)

It looks like I am a little late, but if there is room for one more song you should consider a song by Esthero called Thank Heaven For You. It's very sweet.

May 1, 2006 @ 10:44 PM

Mike Boon

I don't have any Esthero, but if you throw the MP3 at me I'm happy to listen. Email addy is on this page.

May 3, 2006 @ 7:49 PM

I saw the song "Today" by The Smashing Pumpkins. It's a great song, but not so great for a wedding! It's about suicide. I know, I know...doesn't seem like it, but that's what it's really about!

February 17, 2007 @ 1:11 PM

Where do I find Ray Charles "You are my Sunshine"???? My fiance used to sing that song to me all the time and I would love that for our wedding mix next week!

June 22, 2007 @ 10:49 AM

Toronto Mike

Enjoy... and congratulations!

June 22, 2007 @ 11:09 AM

Your list is awesome! I'm getting married Sept 08... and while I have a bit to compose a final list of my own for my fiancee, you have seemed to pick all songs and many more that I wouldn't have even thought of! This is a long shot, but do you have all the mp3's/cd of these? If there is anyway you could send me them 1059 whetherfield st unit 36 london on n6h0b6 I wouldn't be able to thank you enough...

September 27, 2007 @ 10:06 AM

wow. the Bif Naked-Lucky is a rare pic! I thought I was the only one who knew who Bif was before she was Battle of the Bands.

November 9, 2007 @ 10:04 PM

Toronto Mike

Bif always got a lot of airplay here in the Great White North.

Bella Rose

Hi Mike!!

Thank god I found your post! Your list is exceptional!!!!!!!

I am trying to compile a list of songs for my step daughter, she is getting married in March, and she wants me to pick the music!! It's a hard one, they aren't really into much, just R&B, so I was wondering if you have any ideas for that.

She initally asked me to pick songs that have the word LOVE in them OMG!!!!! It can be any era, or genre except for Country LOL!..

So....you can imagine...I have been on the computer for 2 days trying to find things...oh well it will be an awesome day, and I am privileged to get to pick the music I guess? :P

Ok enough rambling from me, but if anyone has any ideas please let me know! My email addy is bella_rose32@hotmail.com

Cheers from Australia

Toronto Mike

Hey Bella, here's a list of my ten favourite songs with "love" in the title.

I'll put together a longer list later this morning...

January 13, 2008 @ 8:35 AM

One somewhat sappy choice that I would add to your list is "You're the Best Thing" by The Style Council. Paul Weller may not rock out like he did in The Jam, but it's a fine tune nonetheless.

January 14, 2008 @ 11:29 AM

Hey! Great list...I'm in the process of compliling ours for next summer. One song I love that I never hear but always goes over well is "Little L" by Jamiroquai. Just a thought. It'll be on ours!

January 27, 2008 @ 5:28 PM

- Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits.
- If you're not the one by Daniel Beddingfield.
- I DonT Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith.
- Where the party at by Jagged Edge

I spose you can't have all the good songs in a 100 song playlist... just my 2 cents.

January 30, 2008 @ 3:48 AM

Hey! I just googled wedding playlists and I came upon your site. Great list! I borrowed a few to add to mine in June '08. My biggest problem is keeping the older crowd from leaving in disgust. Any suggestions that'll make everyone happy?

February 12, 2008 @ 8:26 PM

Toronto Mike

The generation gappers are U2 and Coldplay.

February 12, 2008 @ 8:29 PM

"Perfect Day" by Lou Reed is also about heroin addiction.

March 5, 2008 @ 11:31 PM

Toronto Mike

Marriage is a lot like heroin addiction.

I know this list is a couple of years old, but I just had to give props to anybody who knew "Red" by treblecharger, my favorite song in high school in TO...

May 20, 2008 @ 3:10 PM

Toronto Mike

Wouldn't you be disappointed if a guy billing himself as "Toronto Mike" didn't know treblecharger's "Red"?

July 7, 2008 @ 8:31 PM

me and my boyfriend are getting married and i dont have a song picked out but he does its called close my eyes forever by ozzy and lita ford we are both into rock but i cant decide what to do im asking anyone for help with this problem

July 14, 2008 @ 12:05 AM

katrina: that song by ozzy? tis about suicide. not so sure that's what you'd want to go with for a wedding song.

July 15, 2008 @ 2:36 PM

I just had to say THANK GOD FOR YOU! I am getting married in less than 3 weeks and have yet to make up our playlist. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

November 18, 2008 @ 12:26 PM

Thank you for saving me one billion hours.

These are great wedding songs. Perhaps the best wedding songs on the web. My wedding playlist is complete!

November 19, 2008 @ 8:50 PM

You know you could add another pearl jam song if you used the original 'throw your arms around me' by Aussie band Hunters and Collectors (though it isnt really a very romantic song...lusty though, for sure!)

November 21, 2008 @ 6:04 AM

hey mike!
I am reading through your songs and all of them seem really great, butt I am running into trouble. I need a first song that is not all mushy. I was hoping for more of a hard rock song. I do not want anything that is that hardcore, due to the older generation that will be there....does anyone have any ideas?!

December 13, 2008 @ 8:14 PM

Toronto Mike

JJ, you want The Tragically Hip's "Long Time Running".

December 13, 2008 @ 8:17 PM

hey man, can I get the c.d you made, i'm having a wedding in four weeks..thanks

January 5, 2009 @ 1:34 PM

I can't believe that there's not a single AC/DC tune on your list. That is criminal. I would think you'd at least have "You Shook Me All Night Long" on there. AC/DC always gets the party going when I DJ a gig. Overall...Nice work though. :)

January 13, 2009 @ 6:45 PM

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the list. Lots of good ones :)

January 25, 2009 @ 4:45 PM

My fiancee and I are both huge Incubus fans, so we added some of their songs to our list. Such as "Here in my Room" and "Love Hurts."

January 25, 2009 @ 4:47 PM

Cool wedding songs. Now I've got my wedding music!

March 7, 2009 @ 11:49 AM

Art Vandelay

Hey Mike. I just created a playlist for my sister's wedding a few months back. My wedding is in October in Mexico and I plan to use that playlist with a few of your suggestions added. Here's my quandary: I cannot find a good song to play during our ceremony. My sister used This Year's Love by David Gray which was an excellent choice. However, I have always been the musical guru in the family and I refuse to be outdone. I am indie to the core these days and never ever ever listen to the radio so uniqueness is essential. Any suggestions you could throw out for me would be most appreciated.

I object to "All You Need is Love," based on the fact that it is, in fact, not a love song, but a song making fun of the hippie concept of love being all a person needs. It's a satire. The belief that it is a love song is a common misnomer and is not correct. Hope that helps.

September 9, 2009 @ 3:17 PM

Hey Bella...nice collection. I was unknown of most of songs that you have listed. Thnx a lot for sharing these songs.

I loved all of the songs. I would suggest to check the lyrics of each song you play at your wedding though to be certain it fits the occasion and they aren't sad songs with just a catchy title or chorus. Check out my songs I have so far. I'm obsessed!

January 28, 2010 @ 3:29 PM

Those are all time great songs.

I found really nice wedding favors and bridal accessories at Favors Depot, and they're cheap. It's at http://www.favorsdepot.com - they have everything you need, about 5,000 products.

I am loving M. Ward, and She and Him right now. The cover of "You Really Got a Hold on Me" would make a nice slow dance song at a wedding. I love the original post and all following suggestions. The Luckiest is my favorite so far Thanks all!

Oh yeah! I forgot, Sarah McLachlan song Ice Cream. I would walk down the aisle to that or have it as a first song. Such a good song!

I don't think you have researched this very well I am from UK and A Certain Romance by Arctic Monkeys is not really something you would play at a wedding, it is not really romantic, it is about a council (welfare) block and what the people there are like but that there is a "certain romance" around there.......it's a great great song but in no way romantic, i think you googled rock bands and romance.

I'm not sure about keeping Alice in Chains on the list at all. Also, Love Shack probably ought to go. I've never really liked that song. I respect your keeping the Kenny Rogers for your mother's sake-- although it really is the odd man out here. You've got a great variety of songs here. Nice work.

That is a really cool listing. Thanks for posting this. I will have to go through the whole list and give them a listen. I have heard of most of them, but there are a few I don't recognize off hand.

Gotta go with "Something" by the Beatles", maybe John Pizzarelli's version of "L-O-V-E", and last but not least Harry Connick's version of "I Only Have Eyes For You."

EXCELLENT!!! Good additions by many too - and some poignant omissions. I've now got my list up to 304 songs...I hope we can party that long.

Bryan White's "God Gave Me You" is very appropriate - great melody and lyrics.

"Marry Your Daughter" by Brian McKnight Jr. and Niko McKnight would make a good Bridal March or for a Father-Daughter Dance

wedding songs

I love your choices because they are so original and not just the obvious songs. I am now looking some up on youtube and it is great to be turned onto new songs.
