Martin Streek Swearing on 102.1 the Edge

When Pete Fowler visited for his appearance on Toronto Mike'd, he told a great story about co-hosting The Thursday 30 with Martin Streek in 1994 when Martin Streek dropped an F-bomb. He even brought in the memo sent by Stu Meyers about this incident. I read this memo in its entirety during this episode with Fowler.

Jason Barr was also witness to this from his perch in Brampton, and he shared his memories of this moment in CFNY history.

And now, thanks to Brother Bill who shared it with Pete Fowler who shared it with me, we have the audio of Martin Streek swearing live on the air at 102.1 the Edge.

Literally LMAO.

I remember coming into the station that night to do the overnight. When I go there I asked Jason: "so how'd the thirty go?"

His response...and I still remember...was "oh, I'm sure you'll hear about it tomorrow. Marty dropped the F-bomb live during the show. Fowler's response was the best".
Jason was laughing the entire time he was telling me.
I was dumfounded!

The memo was even better...

A piece of history there. Thanks Mike, and thanks Robbiej for the behind the scenes stuff. Loved it.

Thank you to Brother Bill for having the tape and converting it to MP3 and sharing it with Pete Fowler. And thank you to Pete Fowler for thinking of me!

That is awesome! Thank you Brother Bill. Too bad Martin couldn't tell us how he really felt. Really kept his feelings bottled up. LOL

Wow, it's amazing how something so minor could be a big issue.

Anyway, I never knew 102 was at Bloor and Bathurst at that point. Which storefront were they in, exactly?

January 19, 2016 @ 6:31 PM

@jacob: I think it was the live-to-air that was at Bloor & Bathurst?

Funfact: Firefox's spellcheck has neither Bloor nor Bathurst

January 19, 2016 @ 9:29 PM

I just had to teach my phone Bloor today.

January 19, 2016 @ 9:54 PM

Ya, my phone doesn't like Bloor too much either.

January 19, 2016 @ 10:12 PM

@jacob The Bloor and Bathurst studio was between Aida's And Taco Bell, and across from the old Bloor street theatre.

The thing that struck me was at the end when Pete introduced "a debut from Green Day...When I Come Around."

Really puts a date on this thing.

January 19, 2016 @ 11:21 PM

Haha I didn't catch the When I Come Around part, but even just starting with Dink - Green Mind put it in its time and place for me.

Haha! Incredible clip.
It was pretty special hearing Martin's voice again. That guy is deeply missed.

Martin told me that story and his first encounter with Stu Meyers after the incident. I don't remember all the details other than Stu started the conversation in a calm manner but quickly shifted gears and put the fear of God in him!! I gather by the way Martin told me the story that Stu's message was received.

Ahhhh radio.

Dr Phil

Have you ever talked to a professional about your obsession with Streek and to a greater degree CFNY?

You really should let go. And The Edge was /is not a great radio station. There are no great ones in Toronto.

@Dr Phil

It's hardly an obsession, but I do enjoy writing about 102.1 and Martin Streek.

Idea: If you don't like it, don't read this site or listen to my podcast.

Problem solved!

This is awesome. Thanks so much for sharing!

January 20, 2016 @ 4:03 PM

That was awesome...I'd be pissed, too! Pretty sure I was @ that NIN show!
Still miss Martin every day...

January 20, 2016 @ 7:09 PM

Classic! Great to hear his voice, he was a huge part of the Edge for me.

January 21, 2016 @ 6:18 AM

The Edge was at 559 Bloor St. West

@ Toronto Mike

I, for one, enjoy your writings about 102.1... it was a huge part of my listening habits back in the day. And most of your entries on the station get lots of response. Keep it up! This Dr. Phil guy is a fuck-wad.
