Funny I hadn't seen the show in a decade or so and caught one about 3 weeks ago. "Those were the days"

If you follow along with the AitF sitcom; keep in mind that Edith 'dies'. The episodes will take on a surprising non-sitcom poignancy from its half-way point onwards. (It's like the earlier Paul dying as a Beatle theme.) Technically that series ended with her character's sudden illness. Stapleton, however, continued with the follow-up series, Archie Bunker's Place for another season and a half.

I had the chance, last year, to notice Stapleton on a prior TV appearance, in the police drama, Naked City. Again her character was a housewife, except more serious. The Sorpranos' Nancy Marchand was also on that early 1960s' episode.
R.I.P.

Indeed Rick C,
She played the part to a tee.
Laughed my guts out on every episode.

The episode where Edith dies is still hard to watch. RIP Jean.
