Andy Frost is Leaving Q107

Last week, when I learned Al Joynes had been let go by Corus, I also heard Andy Frost was presented with a similar folder. Andy, however, was given something rather rare in radio. He would be allowed to say goodbye to the Q107 listenership on-air.

I decided not to write about Andy leaving the station, but earlier today, during episode 321 of Toronto Mike'd, Al Joynes let the cat out of the bag. Andy Frost is leaving Q107.

If you'd like to hear Andy and me discuss his lengthy career at Q107, I urge you to listen to episode 291. Andy first arrived at Q107 in the mid-80s and is now best known as host of Psychedelic Psunday.

Andy Frost and me

Andy's been a fixture on this city's airwaves for over three decades. Without a doubt, he'll be missed.

Sorry about Mr. Frost - there's goes Psych Sundays. And me too.

Excuse my language but WTF is Q107 doing? Their best 2 DJ's are gone even though Andy has another short time.
Only DJ's left of significance are John Scholes & Joanne Wilder. The rest can be put of to rest including Derringer as his time is up but signed a lucrative contract a couple of years ago. My preset in the car for Q107 is off now. No clue where to go with songs & artists.
WHAT A FUCKING MISTAKE Loser Q - start playing songs from the 50-60's. I did it MY WAY.

We're officially giving a "no comment" to John Scholes.

Sad news, but I'm not surprised. When you interviewed Andy, he was very guarded in his comments about Q. I got the feeling he was concerned about his job security.

April 3, 2018 @ 5:16 PM

I can’t bekieve this. Andy is an institution in Toronto Radio. I’m waiting for a new format change can’t believe the invisible pricks at Corus. But then again Bell media is the very same at the executive level. Gone are the days when being loyal meant something and really in any industry. Very very sad times we live in. All the best Andy we love you buddy!! Head up high always. A class act.

Andy always appreciated his listeners, and 14 or 15 years ago Andy made my sons day by giving him a shout out on one of his psychedelic Sunday shows.
Going to miss that distinctive voice.

All the best Andy! You'll be missed on the airwaves. Good luck to you and yours and thanks for all your years in music and with the Leafs too around these parts! cheers to ya!

So sorry to hear this news. I was wondering what was happening with Andy as he reduced his presence on air. I knew Andy wouldn't be around forever and there will be a time he no longer is heard in Toronto. Still, it sounds likd there is more to this. Things are a changing at Q. Hoping it is for the better.
All the best to Andy and family... Enjoy your post-Q107 life friend.

This is terrible news and a further example of an experienced voice in radio being unceremoniously dumped to make way for some "new blood". I met Andy frost. He is a great guy and I will miss his presence on the air.

April 4, 2018 @ 12:06 PM

Well that's that Q107.1 was bad and now ts offical it's just horrible. Good thing for Pat Porter and 91.7 where they still know how to RnR 8n the free world.

April 4, 2018 @ 2:58 PM

fuckno! Andy is the best, hands down. Miss him at the ACC too. All the best to you Andy whatever you decide lies ahead.
Q107 is just about unlistenable now. its a shame.

April 4, 2018 @ 4:14 PM

The mighty Q is no longer.
Their definition of classic rock is Africa by Toto!
Not to mention the five minute commercial breaks after two songs.
Found myself another classic rock station that actually plays classic rock.
Won’t miss you Q!

April 4, 2018 @ 4:39 PM

That really sucks man. Toronto is losing one of the most distinctive voices in rock, not to mention an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre. I feel they're making a huge mistake. Rock on Andy!

I don't know about the funeral-type language that goes into these threads. His massive run is worthy of celebration. It's not Andy that's dying, it's traditional media. Andy is very likely to turn up in another venue.

Unbelievable. What a loss for listeners. A true professional. Good luck Andy.

Wow, what a great loss for Q, very disappointed, the station is now run out of Vancouver by HITLER, micro managed, dictatorship .... it is pretty sad, use to be able to call in and have Q play what we "the Listeners" wanted to hear, now apparently Vancouver knows what we in Toronto want to listen too, same old shit over and over again. I don't doubt that Andy will be approached by companies that can appreciate such a dedicated, loyal individual with a VOICE that we will all remember. You know that old saying "you get what you pay for", well I will no longer be tuning into Q107, you have made a big mistake and I hope all of Andy's listeners do the same and tune out Q107. Andy, I wish you well and I know that you will be greatly missed and hoping that another Radio Station will approach you and appreciate your loyalty, SHAME ON YOU Q107.1, you have made a huge mistake...........

If by "New Blood" you mean kids with college debt being paid minimum wage to announce live to air... Then you're right. Andy Frost makes as much as 5 stations worth of "New Blood" makes.

Thank you for your voice and passion Andy! Get into podcasting and keep that voice with your listeners always

Andy Frost has been a staple, a world of knowledge in music stories. I listen to Q107.1 for Andy Frost Joanne Wilder , Al Joynes. They keep my memories fresh of my past with their music. I can't imagine listening to Q without them. I wish the best to them all.

April 6, 2018 @ 12:06 PM

Just to clarify, only Al Joynes and Andy Frost were let go. Andy will be saying goodbye on the air whereas Al said goodbye on my podcast.

Joanne Wilder was not affected by these cuts.

Its the same shit on every station. Think the "payola" scheme has secretly come back cuz how do you explain the same shitty songs being played over & over on the radio. The world is full of music but yet u hear the same stuff.

These millenials dont know what good music sounds like. Even the sounds from the 50's are superior to todays crap. 1 good thing about the internet is u can find that stuff.

& speaking of Q107 why wasnt Valentyne let go. She brings nothing to the morning show but dribble.

I have listened to Q from the start, enjoyed the various on air personalities, music selection and have ALWAYS tuned in to hear Andy on Sundays. When Andy leaves on May, 27th I'll be tuning out. Corus has made some HUGE mistakes as of late, Al and Andy are the last straws for me. I hope all longtime Q listeners will voice their opinions and let Corus know how they feel. Andy, all the best and we all know that distinctive voice and wealth of music knowledge will be heard somewhere on the airwaves in the not to distant future. There are definitely better choices to let go at Q if this is, as we all know, about the all mighty dollar!!!!

Lee Marshall

I've know Andy a LONG time. I worked with his brother Rick in Winnipeg where Andy was simultaneously a significant part of the success of one of our competitors. [ie: CITI FM.] I was always happy to see how well Andy did here in the 'big smoke' and even though we never ever got to work together it mattered little. I pulled for him to do well in Toronto at every turn. His tenure with the Leafs was also a meaningful plume in his broadcasting cap.

To watch these giant media corps trundle along, and heartlessly so, as they trip, stumble and fall with increasingly less compelling programming is mind 'numbingly' off-putting. Loyalty is obviously a word which no longer applies in the broadcast 'biz'. The saddest thing is, as little as they care for the people who helped to make them the success stories they became, they care even less for the audience which collectively kept them upright and afloat over several decades.

The radio 'industry is so busy killing itself off they haven't even paused once to notice that many of the people they 'target' actually care. But no. You're not a person. You're not even people. You're just part of a 'demo'. They will not listen to you. So why spend so much as even 1 minute listening to them?

April 8, 2018 @ 9:54 PM

That's big data at work. It's all numbers and algorithms, no context.

Back in the day, they'd leave the numbers (I think it was 'focus groups' & raw listener numbers then) to the weekdays. One or two DJs would be able to do their own thing overnight, or on weekends.

If they managed to carve out a niche, or break new artists they were given more leeway.

You'll never see a Martin Streek or even Sir John Peel now.

April 9, 2018 @ 2:41 AM

I know that I'm probably in the minority with the following opinion (yet again!!), but the dismissal
of Al Joynes disturbs me a lot more than Andy Frost's concurrent job loss. Aside from patches of
Psychedelic Sunday, he sounds like he's been phoning it in for years!! Hell, sometimes if not for
contests/giveaways, it's probably safe to assume that a number of his shifts were taped well in
advance!! That might be the wave of the future but it doesn't necessarily make for the best radio
listening experience!! Also, I agree with others who have opined that it might be well overdue for John
Derringer to walk the plank as well, as his act/shtick grew tired eons ago!! As well, with comparable
periods of service to the station, Al also deserved a proper on-air goodbye to the Q 'Listenership'.
Funny how Mr. Frost is on the receiving end of such a long goodbye period!

April 9, 2018 @ 2:02 PM

Bindair Dundatt

Re Walleye: ''an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre"? Only what he read off of the cue cards written by his producers. I caught him out on an egregious John Lennon mistake one day and he lost it on me while admitting to that fact. I may still have the multi-part email battle kicking around but there's no point in dissing the dearly departing. He was a "voice" alright which has forever been his meal ticket; no nous or actual love of music required.

Re B. Watt: Vancouver hasn't been calling the shots since WIC was split up and Corus (based in Toronto) grabbed Q in 2000; just thought I'd mention it.

April 10, 2018 @ 12:56 PM

I would think hiring "new blood" is only about cutting expenses. Music radio stations know there's no hope of attracting a new audience of younger listeners (any more than the phone companies would hope to attract new younger land line users). The best they can do is trying to hang on to as many of the old listeners for as long as they can, but I would assume the declining ad revenue means it's unavoidable that the more highly paid on-air people will be let go.

April 10, 2018 @ 2:07 PM

I strongly suggest everyone look up the term "voice-tracking".

Voice-tracking is coming to Q107.

April 10, 2018 @ 2:16 PM

Voice-tracking sucks..., well, you know the rest!! Back before 1050 Chum went off the air permanently
they voicetracked their overnight shifts, and the most hilarious part was the incorrect, out-of-sync
time clock!! Announced times would often be off by at least a half hour or more. Hopefully such
amateur mistakes have subsequently been corrected. It would seem so, as I'm pretty sure that Mr. Frost's 8 to 10 shifts were all Memorexed in advance!!

April 10, 2018 @ 2:22 PM

Lori Kalemkerian

My days of listening to Q107 are over. I have grown increasingly annoyed at the play list since they added the "newer" music to their rotation. They play the same tired old songs over and over again. The announcers, all except John Scholes and Andy Frost, are annoying and inane. I cant stand Derringers show anymore. Sometimes the conversation is like a high school locker room. That is not what I want to listen to. The only time I really looked forward to listening was Saturdays and Sundays when Al and Andy were on. The guy they have on in place of Al is awful. His voice is grating and I have no idea what he is talking about sometimes. I have a large collection of LP's, CD's and even cassettes so I will be starting to play them more instead of listening to Q107. I am also a fan of classical music so I will be tuning into Classical FM (CFMX) for my rides in the car and when I need to have the radio on. Its sad that the owners of Q107 messed with a good thing and ruined a station that offered something different. I love Psychedelic Psundays and will miss it. RIP Q107.

I heard part of John’s good-bye last evening, but didn’t hear the why. So my question is, why did John leave Q107?

May 12, 2018 @ 9:46 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

When Al Joynes was over talking about getting let go by Q107, he mentioned Andy Frost was also let go, although Andy is getting to say goodbye. When I asked Al about John Scholes, Al said "he couldn't comment on that right now" so clearly things were being negotiated and all was not well for John at Q.

It's safe to say John is part of this restructuring that got Al and Andy and it's likely all part of a Q107 restructuring that will result in more voice tracking. Heck, the last live voices might be John Derringer's show and Joanne Wilder. We could possibly see one of those shows in the morning and another in the afternoon drive and everything else voice tracked, but that's just a guess on my part.

We'll soon see. Regardless, John did not leave Q because he wanted to leave Q. He was told to leave after 19 years.

May 12, 2018 @ 9:55 AM

Goodbye (not-so-mighty) Q. I've been listening to you for more years than I can remember - for the classic rock that I couldn't find on other stations, and for the great radio personalities. But you no longer play the classic rock I love except on Sundays and soon that will disappear, too. And worse yet, you're letting go (let's get real - you're FIRING) some of the best DJs and broadcasters in the business. I think you've lost your way, perhaps misled by the promise of $$$. Maybe you've had a complete meltdown? Who knows. In any case, I will not be around to see you slip into oblivion, just another mediocre station in radio's homogenization.

Best wishes to Al, Andy, John. Thanks for the wonderful memories -- maybe we'll meet up again on some forward-thinking stations. I hope so.

May 12, 2018 @ 10:39 AM

So sad to hear Andy is leaving the (no longer) mighty Q. :( No reason to listen anymore.. Everyone I've met is now gone...

May 12, 2018 @ 12:21 PM

Has anyone actually considered maybe they're making these changes because Q107 simply has no future? It is a business after all and has to sell advertising to pay the bills. Playing 50 year old classic rock just doesn't have a future. Oldies radio started dying 10 years ago, up next it's classic rock. And while younger listeners are cool with Aerosmith, Duran Duran and Soundgarden, older listeners are not. It's like someone added PINEAPPLE to their pizza (dear God).

@Andrew: Icon's are icon's. Jazz music was once the predominate form of music for youth. It was replaced by rock music. Now beat music has replaced it. The "icon's" come and go. No one is denying what Andy Frost did for music just that what he did for music is past. Just like what David Marsden did for music is also in the past. You're an icon for your ERA..not forever unless you did something for humans rights or humanity.

Maybe we need "Glory Days" as the bumper music. A stroll n the past is fine, living there is not.

May 12, 2018 @ 9:44 PM

Javed Jafri

I don't subscribe to David Marsden's NY Spirit b/c it's a pay stream but I do check out the playlist and he plays new music and old and it's multi genre. The best free form stations during their prime were playing classical music composed 200 years ago, blues, folk and jazz that was 60 years old and the best in off the beaten path rock along with some well known cuts. The stations sustained themselves by creating a niche audience that was not mass or mainstream. People did listen to the wide variety. The example I like to use is WBCN FM in Boston. You could walk down the street in the summer and hear the station blasting from all corners - cars, houses and shops and you did not need a radio. There were enough music freaks to almost make it mainstream.

May 13, 2018 @ 12:26 PM

Might be time to subscribe to NY Spirit because I'm feeling like I'm falling behind on new music again.

May 13, 2018 @ 12:40 PM

Javed Jafri

and to bring it back to Andy Frost. The thing about the era he covers is that it the popular music of the day was in fact multi genre. A group like Buffalo Springfield contained elements of folk, country, Latin and Jazz as did much of the best music of the day. Their were also elements of east Indian music, Afro and lots of R & B. A group like Wilco is continuing that tradition today to a certain extent.

Andy's playlist recently has expanded and you do hear more variety on the show than just the tired old tunes.

May 13, 2018 @ 1:12 PM

I respect what David Marsden did in radio but as far as innovation in radio and music goes he's not even on the radar. I have no issue with him creating NY The Spirit and making it a successful entity. Good for him. It's just he's *not* some new innovator or anything. He's not Zane Lowe at Beats 1.

Q107 is a business and it needs to stay in business to keep going. Classic rock is 50 years old. There are no new comers to the take & the audience is all over 50. The reality is the reality. There is simply no real future for that format and Corus knows it needs to change that. It doesn't diminish what these announcers did. It's just about change. I'm in the tech field (hacking). I keep my skills up to date and I understand Amazon Web Services and Azure because it's Cloud computing and that''s tomorrow. I don't sit back and say "I will only learn the Windows 2008 Server role model because that's how it should be. Because that was better. Music is ever changing just like technology.

Q107 is long in the tooth. It needs a makeover. I'm not sure what that looks like but it has to happen.

May 13, 2018 @ 10:36 PM

Javed Jafri

I was always bored by most of what is now considered classic rock. Corporate, arena rock, tired and formulaic. That's is what mainstream rock had turned into starting around 1975. Punk and New Wave brought things back to life but the mainstream remained mundane and that mainstream is mundane today regardless of format. That is the only option we have on commercial terrestrial radio. Granted that in some ways the options are better then ever due to the internet but not on terrestrial radio.

I will say it again genre does not matter there is creativity in new and all different types of music but it does not get exposed. DJ's like David Marsden, Reiner Schwarz, David Pritchard , The Live Earl Jive and others were personalities that exposed people to a wide variety of music while adding their own touch to the broadcasts. They educated people to have open minds. Not just music but there was also poetry, spoken word and comedy. Nothing like the comedy of The Fiersign Theatre is heard on commercial radio anymore. The announcers brought in the audience with their unique personalities and exposed them to innovation and creativity by mixing the experimental with the familiar. The element of surprise.

May 14, 2018 @ 12:42 PM

Have posted this before, but regardless of trends, economics and all the other intangibles, Q107
has done an awful job of honouring its classic rock legacy for quite a few years now. Probably
wouldn't make a big enough difference if they tried to right that particular ship at this point,
but it also couldn't hurt. Cannot really understand: Why has Mr. Frost been given such a long
goodbye?!? Psychedelic Psunday used to be a lot more adventurous and as others on here
have already posted, will probably disappear as soon as he does. It might just be best if the Q
underwent both name and format changes quite soon, as their current incarnation is beyond sad!!

May 14, 2018 @ 2:42 PM

Voice Tracking is already very much a thing at Q107 with the odious 'Willy On Q' (6pm-8pm Mon-Fri). Look for more and more of this robo-dj crap at Q in the not very distant future.
I've suspected some of Andy's shows (not many but a few) have been pre-taped.
I'll be sorry to see Andy go, because it'll mean I'm gone as well.
Q has been in decline for years, and their format tinkering a couple of years ago made things worse.
Their play list has shrunk to the same handful of songs by the same artists with zero surprises.
I only hung around for Psychedelic Sunday (which I've listened to since the mid-80s!).
The morning show is horribly boring. Wilder is okay, but has become very predictable.
Bye Q. It's been a blast - since day 1.
