2012 Was an Amazing Year

Published by Toronto Mike on December 31, 2012 @ 11:00 in Miscellaneous

2012 Looked Almost Nothing Like 2011Although I never wrote about it here, almost everything in my life changed dramatically in 2011. There were changes in regards to where I live, where I work, my romantic life and just about everything in between. 2011 was a year of great change, but 2012 was amazing.

In 2012, everything was fantastic. What happened to me in 2012?

I Visited Europe Thrice
In January, I visited Berlin, and in August I visited Amsterdam. I revisited Amsterdam in September while also spending time in Paris and Dublin. It was all amazing.

I Mastered the Art of Working From Home
It took me a few months to master the art of working from home, but once I cracked the code, I became most efficient without sacrificing an ounce of mental or physical health. My new work-life structure agrees with me.

I Won Father of the Year
Whether it was Monster Jam, taking my son to his first Leafs game, Medieval Times, Snow White, Shrek the Musical or the best camping trip ever, I've never had a more fun year with the kids than I did in 2012. They're my pride and joy and I love them to pieces.

I Got In The Best Shape of My Life
I came back from Germany a bloated 85kg and now maintain a lean and mean 67kg. I biked all summer and now swim five days a week. In 2012 I stopped wishing I was in better shape and finally did something about it. I've never felt better.

I Had a Blast
I finally saw Public Enemy live and they were better than I had ever dared dream. I also saw Neil Young after idolizing him for 25 years and I closed out the year with an amazing set by Lowest of the Low at the Horseshoe Tavern. Great music, great trips to Europe, fun times with the kids... I had a blast in 2012.

I Got Engaged to an Amazing Gal
Last, but certainly not least, I got engaged to an amazing woman in 2012. I'm a very lucky guy.

It's as if I tore everything down in 2011 and rebuilt it all in 2012. I can't wait for 2013.

Happy New Year, everyone.

Mike,

You certainly had an exciting year and I'm sure you're a great dad but I must point out that being a great dad doesn't mean you take your kids to every attraction available. I took my kids to only a few places/events this year but spent time watching movies with them, reading to them, taking them to the park, going on walks and simply hanging out with them and being their dad.

Unfortunately, too many dads believe its all about WHERE they took their kids rather than WHAT they did with them.

@Argie

Of course you're right. You can spend quality time with the kids without taking them to stuff.

We do lots of other stuff, too. :)

Wow Mike, sounds like lots of change in your life. It also sounds like you're happy and things got a lot better in 2012.

Here's wishing you continued happiness in 2013!

Congrats again.... although I did hear about it in episode 4. ;)

You've inspired me to get in shape in 2013 and learn metric.

@elvis

Is it possible I blocked out the 3-0 loss?

You'd better take me to another TFC match this year!

I only read two Toronto blogs every day:

Toronto Mike
Raymi the Minx

I've been reading both every day for almost a decade now. They're very different, but both interesting.

Today, both blogs posted year-end entries recapping their 2012. They're again remarkably different.

Mike, your entry is detailed and honest and positive. I can feel your joy. Raymi writes that her 2012 was pretty horrible.

It's quite the juxtaposition.

Happy New Years.

@Raging Stormer

It was a great year on the field. We went down in the second round of the playoffs, but we had fun.

@Kevin

I know Raymi. I interviewed her a couple of times for this blog. I actually invited her to come on my Toronto Mike'd podcast but she said she rarely leaves Burlington these days.

I hope she has a better 2013. She sounds really down.

I like these happy entries. I'm a lucky gal to get to experience life with you. Here's to another year full of great memories!

@Argie

Agreed. It's about the quality of time spent and I can vouch that Mike does this well. Just yesterday, I shot a great video of him singing and dancing with his daughter. Adorable.

Ok...I have been in and out this year and maybe not paying attention, but I did not know that you were separated or divorced.

@Sammi

I am divorced.

I've never written about it, but have discussed it on the podcast. Listen to episode 4!

2012 (for me):
440 entries posted. A fair number being just of images though, often supposedly clicked upon per Google Stats. 9 comments received (incl. two repeated visitors, and two anonymous).
And a Toronto Mike reply, given a number of linkbacks issued. Which I guess is nice since I had already dropped a couple of comments here, over time, just for his annual website anniversary postings ;)

All the best Mike. I appreciate and enjoy the site. You should host a summer BBQ. I would love to see and meet the guys that post.

Well, it was an okay year. Thing is the hockey lockout sucks. I miss my hockey a lot. It would be nice to have it back next year.

This was indeed a very good year. Everyone in my family is healthy, along with my 90 year old mum who is still hanging in there and still has a bit of independence. I upgraded my education and got my accounting certificate (diploma to follow), and I found a job in the industry that I really like. I have a granddaughter who was born in June, and my wife and I are just as close today as we were in the beginning.

Happy New Year, everyone!!!

Pot became legal in the States of Washington and Colorado - can't wait to head down to WA and smoke a legal. 2013 is a dream come true.

Happy New Year!
PS. @Argie; I noticed you didn't mention taking your kids to church?

Congrats on a great year Mike. Looking forward to the many posts ahead for 2013. I commend you on being involved in your kids lives, I've seen situations where fathers have been pushed aside due to marital breakups. It is the greatest feeling to watch your kids develop through their lives.
All the Best everyone for 2013!

Well, there may be hockey later this month. That will make it good to get hockey back. I really don't care if the Jays win the World Series. Baseball is long and boring.

Sorry to hear about the divorce (it happens) and congratulations on the engagement. Hate to ask, but is your fiance the same girl who once on here posted looking for a date?

Toronto Mike
January 3, 2013 / 17:42

@Anonymous

No, they're two different people.

Bev was looking for a date. She still is, by the way, but I'm out of the match-making game. You can read that entry here: http://www.torontomike.com/2011/06/who_wants_to_date_bev.html

I'm engaged to Monica.
