A Decade of Blogging

Published by Toronto Mike on November 29, 2012 @ 14:00 in Miscellaneous

birthdayIt was ten years ago tomorrow that I changed my personal home page into a blog. Not a lot of blogs have hit the decade mark, so I'm pretty proud I kept this up. It's still fun.

The Tale of the Tape

  • # of entries (including this one): 11,653
  • # of comments (excluding comment spam): 45,484
  • Most comments on one entry (My Prima Television Nightmare): 626
  • Most visited page (excluding the home page): 100 Wedding Songs (136,375 Pageviews)

Happy 10th birthday, blog. I'm looking forward to spending another decade with you.

Happy 10th Birthday torontomike.com! I remember when this site helped me waste many long hours in my 9-5 office days. I used to forward the 'Homer Simpson quote of the week' around and it made me look quite funny! You should know that this site has been awarded a permanent place in my bookmarks bar, which is a high honour. Keep it up old friend, here's to another 10, and maybe by then I will have a phone I can load your site up on! :)

Happy blog birthday! Idea for post (if it doesn't exist already): more details on the stats of the blog. For example, list the most commented and most viewed posts...etc...I'm not good at ideas sometimes.

Stats would be fun.

So would Homer quotes.

Where are these Homer Simpsons quotes?

And congrats!

Happy birthday!

10 years is a long time to keep this kind of thing going. My own blog just turned 9 last month, so I understand how much of an accomplishment a decade probably feels like.

Keep up the good work, and here's to 10 more!

@St3ve

The Homer Quotes are preserved as they were left almost 5 years ago:

Congrats Mike, you've kept me entertained for 8-9 years.

Keep it up.

Wow - that's impressive. It takes real commitment to keep something like this going year after year. Good on ya, Mike.
Has the url always been torontomike.com? I want to see what things looked like at the beginning via http://archive.org

@Corey

10 years ago, it was MikeBoon.com. I just took at peek at the early days and it looked like this:

One of the best blogs - and best internet sites - period.

Mike, you've said you'll do it till it stops being fun. Well, I'm here till it stops being fun too.

Happy birthday, Blog. Well, I'll be around as well. Anyway, my Suns lost last night. That game sucks, but hey, they're going to beat the Raptors tomorrow.

Ha! Neat to see that. And even seeing those old posts were fun - I had actually forgotten about Dougie's return to the Leafs!

congrats mike!! i remember when it was just me and a few others that were visiting it. That did not last too long. I've always been in awe of your ability to write so well. Your blogs flow so nicely and your style is so reader friendly. But I am your brother so maybe I am biased. Good luck going forward. Looking forward to upgrades and changes as we move along.

You know, I can't even remember how or why I found this blog. I was probably searching for something on google and it was mentioned here. I haven't lived in the Big Smoke since 1999 and didn't pop up here till a year or two ago, so finding Toronto Mike was a fluke.

A damn good fluke, of course.

Hip, hip, and hooray for reaching this [10th] milestone Mike.
Um, sorry. I've re-gifted this reply comment from 2009.

How come you never post about your wife?
Is there a NDA with her?
Does she exist at all?
Does someone else service her while you waste your time blogging?
Inquiring minds want to know.

That leads me to wonder, why don't you do a AMA a la reddit? That would be cool.

Congrats Mike. I was brought here about 5 plus years ago trying to see what had happened to H&F. Glad I dropped by.

Happy Birthday/Anniversary Toronto Mike. Not sure how long I've been visiting here, but it's been a long time. I generally avoid blogs as I find most of them self-serving and narcissistic. Yours is very enjoyable with a wide enough range of topics that yours is the only blog I read on a regular basis. thanks Mike. Well done.

Happy blogiversary!!! Thanks, Mike, for keeping this blog going with interesting, exciting, and fresh content for ten years. We really do appreciate the time and effort you put into this site. As Blind Dave says, we will keep coming here as long as it is still fun for you.
CONGRATS ON TEN YEARS!

@Gump

You're a rude prick. Mike has been honest about his personal situation so maybe listen to a podcast or two. How dare you bring his family into your comments? Service her? Really? Not appropriate.

I can't remember how I found this blog, but I just did. I lurked on it for a while before starting to post though.

Congrats Mike, although I have been on the Internet since the mid '80's, yes, I am *that* old, I never got in to blogs until I found yours. I believe I was searching for Humble and Fred.

Your writing is excellent, you are reasonably balanced and I think your policy of never deleting a comment is awesome. (Spam excluded of course). I am really impressed that you keep posting as much content as you do.

I think I have mentioned before that you are generally faster at breaking news than most News orgs and even Twitter!

Here's to the next 10 and beyond...

Thanks, Pete!

It's amazing how much I've learned with this project over the past 12 years (it was a personal home page before it was a blog) that I've transferred to the B2B world of lead gen. Essentially, this was my playground for trial and error when it comes to web dev, social media and SEM.

And every episode of Toronto Mike'd is hosted on H+F's coreFusion server. If anyone needs a dependable and affordable hosting plan or partner, that's the link you want to click.

Mea culpa, I had no idea. You can't assume everyone commenting has a extensive knowledge of the blogger's background.
That said, there is no need to make assumptions about commenter's intent either. Perhaps others (Argie et al) thrive on conflict, I don't.

The fact you haven't listened to episode 4 of my podcast hurts me. :(

Maybe you should have just stayed lurking?

@Gump

Who knew I had a line?!

I guess my protective instincts kicked into gear when I read what you'd written about Mike's ex-wife (the servicing part). It SO didn't sit right. Maybe I had a flashback to a much earlier post of Mike's - a picture of them (he and his ex-wife) at their wedding (looking barely old enough to drive).

See Lefty Mike! We care about you.

So hey, there it is. And your kids are too cute for words. And you're a cheap bastard who is going to regret not buying the Kiehl's shampoo - the bottle I had lasted a year (using it daily). As the saying goes, a dollop will do'ya.

@Lou Skunt (SUPER funny, btw)

No f'ing kidding. It's a wish MANY share.

Ok FINE. I will pause Laurie Brown (hottest Canadian MILF) and the Signal and listen for (as Mike says) "exactly" 25:43.
+1 on your listenership.

It's all good... you don't know what you don't know. And now ya know!

Gump

I think what you meant to say was - "and now you know the rrrrrrrrrrest of the story" (Paul Harvey).

P.S. I turned on the radio last week and the very first Christmas song of the season I heard was "Christmas Shoes". I almost drove off the highway I was so livid.

Rick C in Oakville

@Gump: Respect your humility on Mike's personal matter, have to agree on the Christmas shoe's song, rather depressing this early in the Christmas season.
Watched it's a Wonderful life last night. That got me in the spirit.

Generally, I enjoy Christmas music - both from the winter festival and the faith perspectives. I respect that this is not everyone's prefered taste or orientation, but that's alright with me - we can agree to disagree. Although I like Christmas or holiday music, I do not like it before December 1. I also think that "Christmas Shoes" is the most aweful piece of garbage an artist of any kind has ever contributed to the human race. Thankfully I have not heard it yet this year. Here's hoping the streak continues.
