My Prima Television Nightmare

Published by Toronto Mike on January 14, 2007 @ 13:26 in Miscellaneous

angryIn January 2006, I bought a 27 inch Prima television from Sears for my basement. I didn't need anything great, just something I could watch games on while hanging in the basement or working on the computer. The price was right and for eleven months all was well.

Last month, the video on this tv stopped working. I turned it on one day and all I got was audio. I performed some trouble shooting of my own, making sure it wasn't a setting or the VCR, and quickly determined she was busted. Luckily for me she broke during her first year which meant she was covered by the manufacturer warranty. I called Sears, let them know the situation, and they told me to call Prima.

I've been trying to contact Prima ever since. Their website says you have to call a toll-free number but when you call the toll-free number you're put in a queue for fifteen minutes until you're dumped in a voice mail box. Then, the recording tells you the voice mail box is full and you're hung up on. There is no way to reach a human being by calling Prima, I've tried it dozens of times.

I've been without a television in my basement for almost a month now. I'm now trying to get Sears to intervene because I can actually talk to a human over there. For a while Sears wouldn't do anything more than tell me I had to talk to Prima, but after a well composed email of frustration they claim they're looking into this.

Does anyone out there have an old tv sitting in storage collecting dust that they're willing to donate to this poor bastard?

Actually I have a spare 19" sitting collecting dust in the basement.
We have had the same response from Sears regarding our dryer & called a local service co. to fix it. It cost $50.00 & was well worth it. Sears kept giving us numbers to call & the numbers they gave us were no longer in business or gave us other numbers to call.
Do you want the tv or not - its free.

I have an old (10 years) sanyo gathering dust and mosquito eggs in the corner of the spare room. My uncle gifted it to me when I moved from Thrikkakara to the flat in Kacheripady. He already has a year old one and a brand new huge Sony. So he said, y don;t u take it and exchange it for something newer. I rarely watch tv nowadays so, if u want it and are willing to pay the shipping & handling from Cochin to Toronto..it;s yours. LOL!

Update: I finally got someone at Prima to answer the call. The TV is with a local repair shop, where it's been for the past three weeks.

It's May 3 and this hasn't been resolved. That local repair shop couldn't fix it, but Prima has finally agreed to replace it.

Tonight I'll pick up the broken TV and on Saturday I should be able to swap it at Sears.

It's been over five months, but the end it near.

I understand the frusstration I have had the same problem trying to comtact someone at Prima. I feel like the phone number antd the email is all fraudulent. I've tried pulling up information on the internet and that doesn't work either. The television product number doesn't even show up anywher and akk I wand is a remote. The universal remotes don't work so I'm extremely puzzled as to what the problem is. I've gone the Brandsmart where I purchased the set and I was told the same thing to call the store but you don't talk to anyone you leave messages and no one calls you back. I,m beginning to wonder if they have taken the guts from other set and put a Prima frame on them. I don't know what else to think. However I feel your pain.

Toronto Mike
June 26, 2007 / 08:51

Eventually, Prima agreed to replace the set. I told Sears about my issues with Prima and they suggested I use that credit toward another brand. For another $9, I got myself a Hitatchi.

I'll never go Prima again.

I am having the same no picture audio problems with my Prima TV,(and I have no warrenty) does anyone have any idea what the problem is my tv is 13 months old

July 6, 2007 / 20:06

My Prima also failed just after 13 months. Surprisingly, I received a response almost immediately after a nasty email. Their solution was to sell me a new set at a discounted price(which wasn't so discounted). It's a discount in comparison to my original purchase price but the offered price was just todays current market price. I will never purchase another Prima product. You should hear the nasty things the repair shop had to say about Prima.

Wow. I can't believe what I am reading here. I bought a 30" Prima in November of 2005. One day this past week, I came home to find that I had no picture...only audio. Unfortunately for me, my set is no longer under warranty. I called the warranty number and was basically told "tough sh@t". When I first got the set I noticed that alot of time the picture was a bit wavy. Not too long ago I also noticed that the picture was not perfectly straight. No big deal, I figured I got what I paid for. But to have the picture go completely out in less than 2 years is unacceptable. I too, will never buy anything else made by Prima. What the hell is up with this audio only crap???

I bought a Prima TV Dec '06 from Best Buy. I moved it and plugged it into a new outlet and - nothing - nadda - zippo - no picture - no audio. I went back to Best Buy and their response was "Pack it up and send it to the manufacturer. Maybe they'll help you". I have the receipt for the TV but not the warantee card. Any idea where I find these guys?

I bought a Prima Tv couple of years ago.The price was right and I also bought the in House warranty. My Prima Tv has now been sitting on my Floor waiting to be fixed. The TV tech guy comes over takes a look and said the setting module is gone and have to order it from China. That is fine and dandy it took 6 weeks for the part to come in and the tech guy comes back to put it in and says tv still not working properly. So I keep calling the repair shop and asking when my tv is going to get fixed and he says i'm emailing this company in China but not getting a response. So i'm sitting in my apartment with no tv going on 3 1/2 months and now i'm getting sick and tired of all this CRAP over this TV with warranty. All they have to say that the tv is fixable or it is not and give me a new tv.There shouldn't be a problem at all. Thanks

Bought 27" tv in June 2007 from Sears. It would not turn on in Jan 2008.Sears was not helpful in any way. Now its Aug and still no results, waiting for a reply from Prima. BBB could not help unless there is an address for the company which I can't find.

If you're past the one year manufacturers warranty, you're pretty much SOL. Prima won't replace it and Sears will tell you to talk to Prima.

We bought a 42" prima plasma in november of 05 at the time the ratings were in the OK range when we did some on line research only to have been bruned 18 months later when the board went on it. We called Prima and where told it could be fixed and they referred us to a local service rep. We were told it could not be fixed and when we went back to pick up the TV there was an identical unit there with the same problem. I think it is terrible when you buy a product and have no recourse on an obviously defective product unless you dished out and addtional $500 for a service plan, and even then it probably would not be covered.

Daryl
October 21, 2007 / 20:04

Count me in as a burned Prima customer. Our 42 Plasma has a bunch of horizontal lines on it (not burn it but scrambled signals) 15months after purchase for FS. Brought it to their service depot and it sat there for a month where they couldn not get parts.
Its a paper weight now.
The cost has come down from 1800 to 1000 now .. but still $1000 over priced.

My girlfriend just bought a 32" Prima LCD. I was suspicious not being familiar with the brand, but we got it anyway due to the attractive price. Thanks to these reviews it's going back to Bestbuy. I hope somebody from Prima reads this page. It's pathetic.

I have a 32inch and i've recently started to have problems with it. The tuner on it has gone, and there is some horrible botching on some spots, looks like burn in but "LCD Burn IN" is not supposed to be permanent. But its been there almost a year. The one year warranty has past, but luckily i purchased with credit card who doubles the warranty. They have asked me to get it repaired and they will cover it. Hoping all goes well.

Mike
November 2, 2007 / 17:42

I have a liquidation company and we have at least 5 Prima LCDs come in weekly with all kinds of trouble, they will not honor their warranty for us at all. Another real joke is Sony Cyber-shots camera's 15-20 per week, garbage. All these products are new returns from big companies

November 5, 2007 / 16:22

So I bought a 47" Prima, same issue, only audio no video. I contacted Future Shop about upgrading the tv, since my warrantty's up in Feb and they've agreed to assist me in upgrading it. I've been waiting on Prima for an answer for 3 weeks now. Future shop has a 90 day part delay warr where they will replace it if not repaired within 90 days.
My only advise-NEVER BUY PRIMA! And thank goodness I bought that ext warr!

November 14, 2007 / 07:58

Well folks it is not just TV's had a DVD player go south within 30 days of purchase. Sears replaced and 5 months later it went south again. Prima does not answer e-mails or phone calls.
Sears finally replaced it and told me they were giving one year over the counter replacement for all Prima products.

If you look at the other products that this company is carrying the warranty for I would suggest everybody avoid all of them.

All of you have a great Prima free Christmas.

I bought one at the Brick as it was a great Deal only a $1000.00 for a 42". Within 3 hours of use the thing blew up, bang bang smoke the whole deal. We took it back and were told that they have never had problems before or any others returned. Do you think they were telling the truth ..?????

Bought a 27" Prima at best buy. Had it a couple of weeks. Woke up to flames shooting out the back of the TV. Good thing I woke up. I even wrote to Prima and have not had reply ...of course. Very sad ...was really bummed out and was not going to ever have another TV in my bedroom. I have since tried this once more and thought I would try a Digistar....which is now giving me trouble...and guess what I found out....they are part of the parent company that ownes Prima.... go figure.

I have had a 27" Prima for the past 4 years and it has worked great. I thought that I would get the same quality as what I have, but I guess I was just lucky. Great site, thanks for the advice.

I was going to buy tomorrow a 42 Prima being sold below $1000 but with these negative comments, I am thinking of staying away, but in all fairness, it appears the same goes with others, specially with SONY the world's worst warranty. Advise stay away from Sony laptops and their warranty is worthless.

I bought a Prima 32 inch TV last year 1600$ at futurshop, I had the same problem as everyone else here, eventually no sound no image, I send it to a local repair shop since my warranty was up, it has been at the repair shop for the last 3 months, should be ready soon, 433$ later....
All those store who sell that product "Sears-Futurshop-Best Buy" all a bunch of crook.

I bought another brand since then SONY...amazing.

Anyone close to Montreal, interested to get my Prima TV for 433$ ???

For anyone willing to buy a new LCD TV set: avoid Prima brands. Try to pay a little more because it is worth it. My hope is that sooner or later we will not see this brand in our stores. Reading all these messages I realized how stupid I was to buy a Prima LCD.

Hi: I understand your frustrations as consumers. I've had a prima 21" set in my shop for almost two years. When you plug it in, it stays on with no picture or sound. If you push any button on the front,(except power) the set turns off and won't turn back on. I've been racking my brain to find the problem, and Prima has been no help supplying parts, or support. HELP ANYONE!!!!!!!!

November 30, 2007 / 21:47

Wow, We have a Prima LV150B02X and have the same problem with sound but no picture. Our warranty has just expired and we are trying to discuss the issue with Future Shop and Prima. I contacted PRIMA at 1-866-447-7462 and was able to speak with a customer service representaive who gave me a contact email. I emailed the contact (Vic) twice and have not gotten a response back. I also called the number again and left a message. Still no response. Our TV was also repaired (or so they say) twice before this. I would definitely never purchase a PRIMA product and I am hoping that word will get around about the unreliability of thier products and very poor customer service. Stay away from PRIMA.

Add our family to the long trail of people who will never buy a prima product again....a couple of years ago both my mother and my brother bought 27 inch prima tv's at about the sane tine.....both went south about the same time too about 2 months after the warranty went out on them.

Both had the same issue where they just turned on the TV one day and what did they get! Zilch, nadda, nothing.....no video no audio no nothing.....

Is that something that can be fixed? Or will we just have really nice fancy paper weights?

Well i see i am not the only one who got sucked into buying Prima tv. i got up one day and turned on my tv and only got audio no picture. i had the Prima 42"Plazma. well i have family that live in Toronto that are coming to Montreal for the holidays and will ask them to take it to Microelectronic in Toronto and see what happens from there. my Prima lasted me 2 years and i just went out and bought another 42" Plasma but certainly not a Prima. Thank you all for your info which i would of seen it before i bought this crapy Prima Tv. Well we live and learn.

Wow!! .. I was so ticked off when the picture on our 42" Prima TV went that I immediately went and "googled" Prima and the first thing I find is this web site. I don't feel alone! Our set is just over a year old. After reading the above comments I phoned Future Shop in Chilliwack, BC to see what they can/will do. "Can't help us - warranty has expired", was the response. The set is now in the repair shop awaiting an estimate to fix it. The repairman has had a few Prima sets come in and said it could be up to 3 months for parts. It is interesting to note that Future Shop doesn't sell Prima TV's anymore. Wonder why!? I'll wait to hear from the repairman as to what exactly is wrong with the set before I "go to war" with Future Shop. They should stand behind products they sell! Prima will also be hearing from me. I hope everyone that has posted problems with these TV's keep us all posted about any feedback from Prima.

It's sad to hear about all these problems with Prima TV. I used to repair TV before i decided to move into computers. A friend of mine brought his Prima to me and it has no video but sound. In most cases it is the inverter which powers up the light tubes in the back that makes the picture visible. I opened the damn thing and disconnected the inverter, powered up the TV and put in a DVD, then brought a flourescent at the back of the unit and was able to see the picture. I tried calling Prima and guess what? No human beings work there... No response ...Well all i am offering here is a little hope for all the poor souls who bought this brand. In my research online I came across this website that sells the inverter for $179.99. You can do it yourself if you get hold of this inverter. I have not done it for my friend yet so i am not sure about the aunthenticity of that website, but it seems they specialize on inverters only and they even have cross matching inverters that will work with Prima. Email and i will send you the web site. Good luck and hope you get to repair your sets that you paid for and you should rightly be enjoying.

I have a Prima 34" widescreen CRT television (200lbs of old, supposedly reliable technology). When it was 6 months old, it burnt out it's high voltage converter. We managed to get through to Prima and have it fixed. 3 months later, the same symptoms were back (nasty electical burning smell bad enough to make your eyes water). The last time I spoke to Bradley at Prima (last name Schmitt, I believe), he promised me a replacement TV if I faxed in my bill. I did, and two months later I have not heard from him. I just finished talking to Prima customer service yet again (asked for Bradley, he is "sick" again, and his voice mail is full) and this time I threatened a class action lawsuit if they don't get it in gear. I don't hold out a lot of hope, to be honest. Does anyone know how to get a class action lawsuit started in Canada?

My son also brought a 42" Plasma TV from the Brick - in November, now it has white shadows in it. Reading your blog it sounds like they could also cause some fires with all the burnouts. I am thinking of getting a lawyer - is there one out there already working on this to add names to? The Brick does not want to replace it - the actually don't even want to talk about it unless you upgrade. What happened to customer service?

There must be something we can do here legally as a group. My Prima often has no picture just sound...nothing but horizontal lines on the screen...remote does not work and the TV will not accept any other universal remotes...I regret this purchase

Barb
December 16, 2007 / 02:12

Since my last post of December 10th I have had our TV set repaired to the tune of $603.84. I may live to regret this !!!! Our cheezy Prima set has 3 modules and one had burnt out. The actual repair kit was $414.37 and the rest was labour and taxes. We've had the set back 2 days and now the picture keeps blinking on and off. Back to the repairs shop on Monday !! My husband is barely surviving this... he is reduced to a 13" for the time being, and keeps complaining that he can't see the hockey puck when he is watching his beloved hockey games.

I still haven't had a response from Prima. I sure like the idea of a class action suit against Prima. Hopefully someone can lead us in the right direction - count me in!!

My son bought a Prima from sears and he kept it in his bedroom, beautiful picture, then one night he was walking by the tv and went to change the channel and got a shock, then the tv would not let you change channels lost the sound. He was going to throw it away but I talked him into giving it to me, because it still had a beautiful picture. I call a tech from Prima and he gave me the name of the only place here that fixes that brand. Well I put the TV at there place in Aug. of this year and still have not gotten it back, just talked to the pepole and they said the manufacture has not responded to there phone calls or e-mails for the part I want to know if they can be sued??

My father recently purchased a Prima 20" combo unit and while flipping thru the otherwise well-presented owner's manual I noticed that the warranty pages in all three language sections had been removed! I was able to find service/warranty info printed on the barcode stickers on the box. It turns out that service/warranty is not provided by Prima Inc. but rather by PWW or Prima WorldWide Warranty Services. Their website, where you can register your Prima product and find out some other useful info is www.pwwservice.com.
Check out their FAQ where they list a rather simplistic fix for all your No Video and/or No Audio problems with your Plasma/LCD TVs. :-) And they also offer renewable extended warranties (I was quite surprised to see how steep the cost is for the big screens). If you are out of Warranty at least find out from them who are all the Authorized Service Stores in your area. At least one of them might have the part you need.

And finally, note that Prima Inc. doesn't actually manufacture these TVs. They are made by a company in China which also makes the very similar models for such brands as Advent, Audiovox, Polaroid and others. Check out walmart.com's website for the reviews of Polaroid LCD big screen TVs. 50% like them because of nice picture, 50% hate them because of problems.

My holiday gift to you all. :-)

Another wonderful Prima story. I purchased a 27" Prima this past summer and the DVD player would freeze half-way through a movie. I sent it away for repair November 7 and as of today the parts are still not in. It's been close to two months and I get the same response each time. "we're waiting for the part. You would think in this high tech age a part could be sent in a resonable amount of time. In two months I probably could have walked to the manufacture and picked the part up myself.

I have a 42" Plasma Prima TV from Future Shop that after 13 months has lost its picture. I have sound but no picture. I've tried the suggestions from the website without a resolution. Has anybody had their set fixed to their satisfaction?

January 2, 2008 / 23:08

Finally a response, however not from Prima. After nearly two months of "the parts are not in" from the repair shop I decided to contact the Brick regarding my built in DVD player freezing half-way through a movie. With in two days I received a response from customer service from the Brick. This was then followed up with a phone call from one of the customer service reps. asking for more details. They contacted the repair shop and received details from them as well. I was told that if the repair is longer than 30 days I should have received a repacement TV. This has been the best response to date, however I'm stll holding my breath to see if anything actually happens. If any of you purchaced your wonderful Prima from The Brick I would suggest going on to their web site under customer service and post your comments.
Will respond when I find out more. The saga continues....

I have a Prima LC23Y25. I too have had the same crap. Futureshop won't help me because I didn't get the extended service plan. I took it to the local repair shop and it sat there for 3 months while they waited for a part. It never came. Basically we all have the same problem No picture. Either weird white lines or horizontal blocks of light. Pretty expensive radio if you ask me. I guess it would make a good boat anchor as well. I think I am going to take a sledge hammer to it and post it on youtube, what a piece of crap. I didn't know they were made in China. I hate Prima, and Futureshop. Buyer BEWARE. Run away from Prima as fast as you can!

January 5, 2008 / 15:02

Jesus, I came on the web just hoping to find some trouble shooting for my Prima TV, which as you guessed it, is broken. My problem is a little bit different as I can't even turn it on at all. The standby light doesnt even light up. I will see what my warrenty covers, but its still a piss off as when I bought it 2 years ago i ended up paying almost 1600 bucks for a 32 inch TV. Sigh, I just don't have the time or the effort to put into trying to get this fixed, I can foresee me eating that intire cost, and buying a new one, cause honestly who can go Months without a functioning TV.

Hans
January 10, 2008 / 10:32

I have the same issue.. I bought a Prima 42" Plasma. Just over 2 years, no video, just audio. Warranty expired. I brought it to a tv repair shop, they looked at it and said it was the power supply inside. He said, good thing components inside are Samsung. Easier to deal with. New part, including labour, $400 and it's fixed. It's better then buying a new one and lets hope it'll last another 2 years before I have to buy a new one. In general, no more PRIMA for me, rather spend the extra money on a good brand name and ALWAYS get the extra warranty.. it's worth it and peace of mind.

For anybody in Montreal, drop me an email if you want to name of the repair shop as they deliver great service. I even got a rental tv for the meantime, so I could watch tv at home at least.

Is this a Chinese company?
Thanks you all for the very helpful inputs.
I was meant to buy one at Sears (they actually have very good price for a 32"), but from all the problems you guys have, it isn't worth it. From your assessment, I found Sears at least is more approachable and helpful than Best Buy.

Yesterday I was playin Call of Duty on my Prima HDTV, and today I come back to use it, and I press the button to turn it on, and it doesn't. I have had it for more then a year and the warranty is long gone.

I can't even find Prima's Website, anybody know what it is? I just keep Googling it and finding these german telelvision websites.

Im really pist off.

Its really sad to see all the comments about broken tvs .. especially since it looks like I'm just another statistic. Ironically, before I knew how incredibly lucky I was, I talked extensively to human beings at Prima and they gave me the number to their repair place. I called the repair place within the required 48 hours and the repair place said that Prima hadn't sent the papers and hadn't paid them for work done in the past 6 months. They kindly agreed to do the work if I just got the authorization number. I am now having an incredibly hard time getting a hold of someone in Prima!!! Its so frustrating, especially since its the only tv I have in the house.
My next step, I think is to harass the company to death through email and voicemail messages. I would be completely on the bandwagon for some legal activity if this continues.

I received a Prima 32" LCD three months ago from a friend who won it in a contest. He also won a 'refurbished' surround sound which he kept. I went to turn it on this morning and nothing. Blank~ Checked multiple outlets and still nothing. I was looking for a site that would help with trouble shooting and found this site. Boy am I glad I received it as a gift, I should have asked for the 'refurbished' surround instead! It is working just fine...I'm sorry to see so many people who have actually payed for one of these, frankly, I've never known a TV to stop working in my life!

Hey, just came across this site. I just bought a Prima 30" about a month ago from Sears. It was reduced to a great price, now I am wondering if mine will go the way of all the other posts I read here. I have the one year warranty as well and have not taken the extended one yet. Guess I better rethink that choice. Knock on wook no problems yet, but I gotta say I am more than a bit concerned. I bought mine at a Sears clearance center and as far as I know their sales are final. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks to this feedback I decided to return my 6 day old 32" Prima back to the Brick. After much arguing & escalating, (to Mgt. & Executives), I managed to get the Brick to take back this future paper weight, (& exchange it for a more reliable Brand). Wasn't overly worried about the 'paper weight syndrome", however, the fear of fire, (when one has 4 children in the house)...isn't something I was prepared to accept! I strongly encourage everyone to complain in person & talk to someone at the your retail outlet that is in a position to make decisions & cares about future client business.

Guys, I used to work for Prima's call centre so I know exactly what you are going through. There is one call centre for all Prima/Polaroid Tv (US Only) customers. It is located in Richmond, British Columbia and they have a total of about 8 call takers. I was a part of that 8 and I would hear calls from frustrated people like u all day long and was basically told to sluff everyone off. Prima is a multi-million dollar company and they have one location with about 40 employees alright? 5 people work in the warehouse where all the parts are shipped to repair centres. 5 People! For all of North America! Needless to say, from my experience, I would NEVER buy a Prima product because I know exactly what happens in the long run. I eventually left the company because I couldn't take lying to the same people every single day. I would be forced to tell someone something one day, only to have them call me back a few weeks later with no results and have to explain myself. Trust me, DO NOT buy a Prima product!

Prima sucks ..and so does RCA, LG, SONY, ZENITH and PIONEER.

I am another victim to the Prima scam. 1 month after warranty ran out, I lost my video. I took it to the repair shop and they did a factory reset. 2 months later the same problem again. Luckily Mastercard doubles the factory warranty. What a scam Prima has going here.

February 16, 2008 / 23:58

Well, I wish I new this a long time ago, but hindsight is always 20/20. Yes, I have wait had a 32" that is now a paper weight. Same thing, sound but no picture. We bought it from Sears and are not impressed with there lack of help. I believe that the company that manufactures Prima should be held accountable and so the companies that sell them. I am sure that by now they all know of the problems and the fact that no one is being held accountable really ticks me off.

I believe that all who have anything to do with Prima (manufacturer and suppliers) should be boycotted. I'm in for a lawsuit just to make someone accountable. As for me I will NEVER BY PRIMA or anything affiliated with it.

I have a black-out problem with my 42" flat screen Plasma which I have bought it from FutureShop (Toronto). I can only hear sound but no picture. The warranty is now ended and I tried to contact Prima but never yet get through a real HUMAN on the line, instead an automate operator came on and ask to push certain option for this and that. Sister got a 34" CRT Prima from Sears, it died, Sears has had it in the shop for close to 8 weeks and the part is still on order. Seems to me that the class action law suit should be against the sellers and let them go after Prima. If Prima won't respond to customers, maybe they will respond to the retailers if they sued. Just a thought. Yeah good site you got here, it will help others stay away from this crappie Brand.

My prima lasted 2 yrs. Didn't know how lucky I was until I got on to this site. Problem was that pcture finally went. Bought it at Sears and none of the people I talked to at Sears recently ever heard of Prima. Local repair shop feels they can fix it for $85. (new capacitor if they can locate it) Would I be throwing good money after bad?

Jeff
February 20, 2008 / 17:01

Bought a Prima 37" LCD from Future Shop. The LCD lasted 15 months then turns on but no picture and no sound. Don't really care that its not on warranty anymore as a bigger replacement (probably also crap) can be had for around half of original cost. Ext warranty, why bother! I didn't get it and will now go to WallyMart a get a 42" LCD (1920x1080 native) for 898.00 Screw the extended warranty, if it dies within the year great. If it dies after the first year then its still less $75 a month to own and gets cheaper each month that it last before it dies. BTW Prima Sucks. A friend of mine bought one (exact same model) and it crapped out before first year warranty ran out. Luckly, the service center couldn't repair and he got credit towards another one.

Bought Prima television from Best Buy worked well enough in the downstairs for a couple months, sound was never great but I could live with it after all I only paid $500. Four months later and the TV no longer has a picture Best Buy tells me to call Prima, got a hold of a person finally and was told to take it to a tech in the area, where it has been ever since, that was over a year ago and still all I receive are empty promises of replacement from the operators who put me through to their supervisors when asked to answer when a replacement will be sent. To this day it still remains at the tech shop "being repaired".

Oh my god!! same problem as everyone else....no screen and weird sound out of the audio. I was looking for trouble shooting and found this blog!! Spent $2000 on my 47' prima at Visions in Surrey 14 month ago and regreting that dicision the more I read. Has anyone had there prima repaired to satisfaction or do I right this off as a learning expirence and just go by a new TV??? As for a lawsuit...I'm in.

March 1, 2008 / 19:37

I've had my prima for about two years.
my 32 lcd has been acting weird for a while now. on the left side of the screen to the edge there is a a shading to the screen. from time to time there is no picture at all when turning on the tv, sometimes it wont respond to remote commands at all, sometimes there is a black screen in "front" of the tv station (which sometimes has what seems to be random lettering).
all these problems are solved(aside from shading on left side of screen) by unplugging the unit and re-plugging it.
I am curious to see how long this thing will last.
oh yeah, the VGA input hasnt worked for the last 6 months.
I WILL NEVER BUY PRIMA AGAIN.

Well I am glad there are more people out there with this problem. We bought a Prima Plasma HDTV 42" and just today just one month after the one year warrenty was up I was watching a tv movie and it flashed a red fuzz kind of like white snow but red erased the picture and all I could see was the red and then nothing, the picture disapeared but I could still hear the movie. then about a few mins. later I started smelling this awful burning plastic smell which was comming from the TV. I quickly unplugged it and I called Best Buy which is where we bought the TV and they said we could bring it in and they would send it away for $300 but that is to JUST send it away. If there is a lawsuit for the Tv's Let me know because I think they should know by now that their TVs are burning out. Even the business places like Best Buy and Future S. know what they are selling us. For Sure :(

I bouhgt a 32 inch Prima tv from Future shop nearly 4 years ago. After reading all these testimonials I feel lucky it worked this long. Last night it made a bunch of cracking noises and completely died out. the power button turns it on but there's huge electical arching inside and it won't turn off. Had to pull the plug b4 it burned my house down.I think I'll cut my losses and ditch this thing. I don't think I want to go through the hell everyone here is talking about getting it fixed if It's just going to be a piece of crap and break down again or worse yet bun down my house.

Anyone have any problems with their Prima Plasma turning back on after you've turned it off? We also have the black screen with sound when changing channels!

March 17, 2008 / 23:58

We have the same problem, 42 inch plasma from prima and had it about a year and a half or so, playing a video game and the screen just went blank, started slightly smoking and smelled like burning wires...still have sound though, lol. i guess from reading the previous posts we have an extremely overpriced paperwieght. we knew it wouldnt last forever, but expected more than a year out of it :( we plan on talking to a repair shop in the morning, but i am assuming they will be no help (from what i have learned here). i want to phone prima, however by the info i found here not really wanting to waste my time talking to a machine over and over. NEVER buying prima again. :(

I don't have quite teh same problem as everyone here, my tv works fine and I've had it for 10 months now, but the biggest problem with my tv is the fact there's a fracking missing vertical line on the right side of my tv, which detracts so much when watching anything. I have no idea what to do about it, but if anyone knows, please just email me. I know there's pretty good chance I can't do anything about it, but this is really bullcrap, anyways, I'll never purchase a Prima again. It's a nice gateway HDTV, on account it got me to see the potential of high def, but it's not worth the money.

They got me too. Bought a 40" Prima Ultra LCD TV from TigerDirect 2 yrs. ago. I got the extended warranty with it. The warranty ran out on Sunday March 2, 08. On Monday March 3rd I came to my man room only to find it smelling like burnt plastic. I figured out that the power inverter blew. So for the last 23 days I've been trying to get some justice to no avail. And I live in Maryland. What's up with the class action suit? I'm definitely in!!

Thank you VERY much for your comments, people.
I'm a single dad with two little boys. I was about to buy a 42" Prima Plasma that's on sale at 'The Brick' as a treat for the three of us.
Now I won't bother. Not only do I have little money to spare, the fire hazard issue is terrifying.

I'm saddened that so many of you have wasted money and had real nightmares over this horrible company. If it's any consolation, know that the stories you post here REALLY ARE DOING GOOD.

Good luck to all who decided to sue these bozos.

I have a Prima 42" HDMI and so far so good (knock on wood).
The only issue I have is the volume of the TV itself. I have to turn it all the way up to get any sound from it. Playing my XBOX 360 on it I have to sit inches away from it to hear anything and I still can't here anything that great. Any ideas on why this is?

Being on a fixed income, I was really considering buying the PRIMA 20" TV. This month, Sears Catalog has reduced the price from $129.99 to $99.99. "HMMM" , I guess when you sell junk and get nothing but complaints from customers, you have to clear out your warehouse as fast as possible. Thank you for this website, you've enlightened a lot of potenial buyers out there and "NO", I will never buy a PRIMA product now or in the future.

I have my 37 inch LCD mounted on the wall and I went to turn it, got a huge shock, and the picture went on it. Still have the audio though! Like someone said, an expensive radio. I unplugged my tv, and I can turn it back on but it only stays on for no more than 15-20 seconds at a time. Now if I can just find a way to play my Xbox and turn on the power every 15-20 seconds I'll be set and won't need a new TV. I am also without a warranty as I have had the TV for 15 months. If there's a lawsuite, let me know.

I'm trying to find the specs on my 32" Prima. Had it less than 30 days, and feel after reading, I need to return it before the warranty is up. If nothing is wrong with it, I will still return it and say it is broken. Thanks for the comments.
Also, If this is made by RCA, it is Sh^t. RCA is made by Thompson Electronics, who is really bad about customer service. Past experience on a 37" CRT model was unfixable because parts are no longer manufactured. The TV was made in 1994. Funny how the old consoles still work and are still being sold in classified ads... Greedy Bastages... Don't make me come and see you in person, you won't like it. I know Best Buy won't like me when I return this LC-3237P.
Again, Thank you to all who have contributed to this discussion and sorry to hear about all who got ripped-off!

The comment above by Raja was made by the same IP address (Fraser Valley Regional Library) that sent me two messages earlier today - except the messages earlier today were from Prima telling me why Prima is the best.

Raja, you're going to have to be smarter than this. Everything I wrote on January 14, 2007 @ 13:26 was true and there are 157 comments that support what I wrote about your product. The product is inferior and the support abhorrent.

Hi Mike, I see you can't get through to anyone at Prima, I bought a 32 inch Prima in Dec 2006 from Leons, it stopped working just over a year into having it, video went and sound was starting to go, i too was on hold for a long long time,I didn't get through, just like you Leons had to look into it for me because i had no luck, and it took about a month. and they said our TV could not be fixed so leons is giving us a 40 inch samsung! no more primas! good luck!, so hopefully you get a new TV not a prima!

April 8, 2008 / 12:26

I just posted but i was reading more responses, wow I can't beleive the crap Prima and all the stores are putting you all though. I guess I was lucky, Prima actually contacted me a few times to tell me the tv cant be fixed, and if anyone who has no picture and sound the tv is not fixable, i spoke to Prima april 7 2008, go to
the retailer if it is in warrenty and they will get you a new TV.

Toronto Mike
April 8, 2008 / 12:41

You get the 12 month warranty, but it sounds like many people have their televisions stop working at 13, 14 or 15 months.

When you buy a television, you expect it to work longer than 15 months. My 27 inch Sony Trinitron has been working fine for 7 years now... my Prima didn't make it a year.

Erin Brooks
April 8, 2008 / 15:20

We were lucky our Prima came witha two year warrenty. with our new TV we bought three year warrenty plus a year of what was left from ther prima comes with that. good luck to all.

I purchased a Prima 27" from Visions in September '07 and it was only used once or twice a week at the time. I've since moved and it's going almost every day in the new place. The only trouble I had with it was coloured lines on the screen and no audio a couple of times, so I unplugged it, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it in again and it seemed to work fine from then on both times. I also bought the extended 1 year warranty and Visions told me that if there were no problems with it after a year, they would return my extended warranty in cash. Reading these comments, it looks like I'm going to have some potential problems, but so far I've been lucky. The lines thing only happened twice. The comments about arcing and fire hazards has me a little concerned!!!

Just took my Prima in for service (2nd time in 3 months) to get a "Factory Reset" done which fixes the TV for a couple months. At $20 a pop hardly worth it. The repair centre told me that Prima owes them money for fixing these pieces of garbage. They won't pay their warranty bills where they have authorized the depot to fix. Big surprise from a Company like this!

We're in the same boat as everyone else here. We've had our 42" Prima Plasma TV for 3 years now (this month actually -- bought from FS -- no warranty) and just today while watching TV it went out. We tried different inputs, turning it off and back on and then looked it up online and came to this site. Looks like we're up shits creek ... paddleless.

I tried for months and got the same thing. If you got an answer on the phone you were sent ot a FULL MAIL BOX AND WERE NEVER CALLED BACKED BECAUSE YOU COULD NOT LEAVE A NUMBER! AFTER MONTHS OF TRYING I GOT SOMEONE ON THE PHONE AND INSTANTAINTLY I WAs sent back to the full mail box! Imagine that! all complaints were sent to the same mail box so dont even try .I finally talked with with some one and they wanted to replace the tv for as much as I paid for it! They did not want to send the "cheap reair parts to fix it and now the repair shop I paid wont even touch it!!!!!

Hi. I just bought a 42" Prima plasma tv from "ML". They are not a big chain but usually reliable. After reading all this I am very scared. I did get the 2 years extended warranty which states they will replace it if it breaks (with a better model). I do not know what to do? Part of me wants to print this page out a let the ML read it. Another part of me wants to wait and see if it breaks within the two years so I get something better. I am a University grad and bought this as a reward for myself for graduating this semester and could not afford much more. ANY advice?

Toronto Mike
April 19, 2008 / 08:30

Shaun, here's some sage advice. If you can return your Prima and cough up a little more coin for a television from a different manufacturer, do it.

Although your tv will likely conk out at the 12-13 month mark, it's not worth the hassle and with your luck it will probably quit at the 24.5 month mark.

Purchased a 32 " LCD Prima LC-32U16 back in Aug 08 from Future Shop. Had problems a few months later and got nowhere with Future Shop and then tried for several weeks to get hold of someone at Prima......... when our TV gets warm or hot the black colour turns to green...... so in the summer we can only watch it for a short period of time before it goes green! We had the problem while it was under warranty but couldn't get anyone (lost count of the phone calls and the emails) and now it is out of warranty I know we are stuck. DO NOT BUY A PRIMA PRODUCT.

I have been fighting with this company since the month after I bought my 30 inch wide screen HDTV in Dec. 21, 2005 I just filed a complaint with the Oregon Attorney Generals office...DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FRON THIS COMPANY! this was my complaint

I bought a tv from the Sears located at 1260 Lloyd Center Portland Oregon, After getting it home and out of the box, I noticed it had some damage to the speaker, I called Sears and told them the issue and they told me to take a picture of the damage and bring it in to show them, I did and all they wanted to do was give me $50.00 back on my purchase, Well a month after that I began to have problems with the TV when I would turn it on all I would get was a blue screen and no sound, I contacted Sears because it was still under warranty, They told me to contact Prima electronics the maker of the tv, which I tried to reach for months before finally getting a hold of them. They sent out a repair man on 8/01/06. But because the problem only happened once in a while he said he wouldnt be able to determine the problem with it and never even took the back off the tv to have a look. It was never fixed. Now the tv wont work at all. All I get is a blue screen all the time and no sound. I have contacted Sears and Prima, the company that made tv many times over the course of 2 years. In that time I was put into voice mail after voice mail, with no-one contacting me back. After finally getting a hold of someone, they would say we will get back to you before the end of the business day, but never did. Now they have informed me that since the warranty is now expired they wouldnt do anything for me. Well, they didnt fix the problem to begin with. So I then called Sears back, informing them of my problem. They told me if I would have told them about the problem within 30 days they would have been able to exchange it. Well the fact of the matter is I did contact them. They told me to contact the maker of the tv, refusing to help me with this matter. After searching the Internet, I found that this company has been selling this garbage and giving little if any help to those who have bought their products. You can check it out at http://www.mikeboon.com/2007/01/my_prima_television_nightmare.html Sears no longer carries this tv due to these problems. Well, I feel that they should have helped me long ago when I started having problem within the 30 day customer satisfaction period. I feel the company should have fixed the tv when I first called them about these problems. I have my receipt for the tv, the warranty information and the paperwork from the service man who came out and did nothing to fix this tv. Sears offered me 10% off a new tv, but because I am on disability and only get $657.00 a month this is not an option that does me much good. Being that Sears did not honor their 30 day costumer satisfaction guarantee and the company that made this product did not honor their warranty, I was hoping you could help me get some resolution to my problem.

We are SO incredibly relieved to have come accross this site!! THANK-YOU! Yesterday we had a PRIMA Ciniplus being shipped to our home. Now, before it even arrived, we have made arrangements to have it returned to the place of purchase. Although we are very "cheesed off" about being out of pocket for the cost of shipping it here and then for the return, according to what we have read here it's the least of our worries. We are VERY sorry that everyone else involved here is dealing with what appears to be a nightmare product and an uncaring company!

Just like Cory Trevor's post above, we also got this stupid TV for free through the Brick with a bed (about 3 weeks ago now - it was when the Playoffs started, I remember that much). And just like Cory's, as of yesterday our volume is also stuck and the remote no longer works. The only button that works is the power button on the TV itself. We have satellite TV so at least we can use the Bell remote for channels etc.

I don't even know what to say really since after reading every post here it doesn't seem like it will ever get fixed or replaced....?

At any rate, just wanted to jump in and join the "Prima makes shitty TV's" club.

My hubby is going to start calling and bugging the Brick and Prima today. I'll post again and update if anything blog worthy happens...

By accident I saw all these reviews. If the Prima discussed is the type made in China, I would recommend not buying it or at least have supplier come in check if it could catch fire. On May4th, 4 days ago, the Prima TV, under standby mode, caught fire by itself at my home. Started with smoke then fire in quickly, one or two minutes. Fortunately, my family was back from vacation on May 3rd. TV and furniture were burnt.
I kept pictures and receipt / guarranty book etc. Now I am working with the Prima company for this issue. Like you said, slow and inefficient.

Same problem prima ultra 40"LCD HD TV.No picture it started with vertical stripes. We have been going back and forth with Vic at prima for 18 months. When the shop here in Las Vegas told us that they got no reply for parts from prima they returned our tv after 6 months. The repair shop owner said that they had this problem with prima all the time they never send parts and do not honnor the warranty. We are now looking for a process server in canada to serve our small claims law suit paperwork.

There are a lot of us posting here on this, imagine how many people are out there with the same problems that aren't saying anything...

Mike,
It's a shame that we the consumers have no place to go when we spend hard earned money and get ripped off by the big companies ...Leons' FS,BB and the like. Your comment to "Raja" was certainly on the mark and I notice that he hasn't bothered to post again!!
Right now I'm in the beginnings of trying to get a human at Prima, from the sounds of things if I have any luck it'll be bad luck. I suppose the only bright light in all of this is that I did purchase the extended warranty from Leon's. Now hopefully they step up to the plate ...if they want continued business. To echo "two-wheeler" Thanks to all for sharing!!

I would like to introduce myself; I’m Frank Macri, VP Operations for PWW Service Inc. You may know us as the service company handling the Prima branded product line in Canada. What you may not know is that Prima / PWW went through major restructuring in late 2007 to focus on providing the best level of service to our Canadian customers. We are still in the midst of placing all the service pieces in their proper places – you should see improvement in the service we provide within the next 30 days-or-so.

Responding to your comments on this blog; putting the blame on Prima products because they are Chinese-made is unfounded; reasons are that the actual panels and the technology that drives the panel / display are manufactured by a handful or companies – most of which you know; these are household names that you see in every electronic retailer. All major / minor brands buy from these companies, whether they are Korean, Taiwanese, European, American or Japanese. So if you unilaterally condemn Prima for distributing Chinese-built inferior products, you must also condemn a host of other big name brands that are common-place in the consumer electronics industry. You also may not be aware that Prima does not manufacturer any products – they are strictly a distributor. The real problem from reading the comments on this blog is service or lack-of, not necessarily the product. Most of us are willing to take a chance on an unknown brand or aggressively priced product if we can be assured that it’s backed up with uncompromised service – and that’s my goal. I promise you this; if I say that I will do something – I will make it happen. My mandate is to build a service department that is responsive to our customers, to briefly share in the areas that I will be focusing-on to fix these inadequacies…..
1) Parts – maintain a significant level of inventory on all major parts for current TVs; this means that even out of warranty products (like most of you) will at the very least have the right parts available to repair the product.
2) Customer Support – adding staff to our call centre so that when you call, you’ll be greeted with a live person who can answer your questions.
3) Policies / Procedures – without getting into details; we will be more accountable to ourselves, to our retailers and to you - our customers.

These changes will not produce results overnight; these are long term goals that will make us more responsive and hopefully better equipped to provide the level of service that will bring you back to Prima.

In closing - I can’t comment on what happened prior to 6 months back since I was not part of the service organization, but I can see that there are / were many unhappy Prima customers that still have unresolved issues. I can’t fix what the previous regime has done, but I’ll make sure that the current / new service regime does not make the same mistakes, and that all Prima customers are treated / serviced respectfully / quickly, and to their satisfaction (within fair reason).

I’ll provide an email address where I can be reached (info@primaamerica.com) – I ask that you use respectful language. I will try to answer most inquiries. Also, keep in mind that I cannot undo what has already been done.

When he said he hasn't been with the service company from 6 months ago, do you think he meant with the company period, or just the service department, because I found this article from 3 years ago. If this guy is serious I'd contact him with my own prima problem, but I'd hate to waste my time on a liar.

Thank goodness for this site! I bought a 42" Prima plasma last year for my cottage. One day it poured so we rented a few movies. We sat down, turned on the tv and only half screen showed up. What the....? We turned off and then on, same thing.
The next day it was beautiful outside and guess what? The full picture was back. That night we put on the DVD's and after a few minutes the tv started to crackle. We thought it was mice in the walls but found it was coming from the back of the tv. We looked in the manual and it said this is normal for plasam tvs. Really????
Now you all have me scared about what the Brick will do when I attempt to return it...and after reading all your messages, I want to return this thing even if i have to pay a stocking charge. Anyone know Bricks policy on return/exchange for better model within one year?

This was weird reading all of these frustrated people's stories regarding Prima. What they say is true. I bought a Prima 30" TV in Jan 2005 for $ 1500.00 from MDG (by the way MDG Computers was useless), since then I have recieved 2 new replacements from Prima and now I am looking for a third replacment in just over 3 years. I have placed 100's of calls into them and to get these results but expect to have to do the same again to get yet another TV replacement, but I dare them not to do so. Its really not about the money any more. I believe the former Employees story above spells the truth about this company. The senior management really doesn't care about the customer.

Had our 42" LCD now for a year and a half, and occassionally when you go to turn it on, it does not, but if you try several times, it eventually does. But now, we have tried dozens and dozens of times, and it will not turn on, no audio OR video. Luckily we did purchase the extended warranty through Future Shop, so hopefully repairs/replacement will be covered, though we have not yet tried. Also, when the salesman was trying to sell it to us, he said it was an LG TV, but that Prima assembled and distributed it. We knew LG was a good trusted name, so we felt confident buying it. Do these salesman know what they're talking about? Seems several diffent people here have been told they were made by all different mfg companies. Anyways, I'll let everyone know how my dealings with the Future Shop warranty goes. If it does not well, we would be interested in joining a lawsuit with you all.

Called our local Future Shop, they gave us a 1-800 # to call, called it, and the guy we spoke with said he rarely receives complaints about Prima TVs! LOL!!! Yeah right, thats obviously BS. But anyways, he gave us the name of a local repair shop, and said they should be giving us a call within 4 hrs, and should be able to come to our home today to take a look at it. I'll keep you updated!

CURIOUS...WHY "ANONYMOUS"
"LUCKY ONE"?!?!

Toronto Mike
June 5, 2008 / 09:00

Yeah, I can't prove it, but I'm sceptical of "Anonymous" as well. Typically people with a television that's not giving them any problems don't think about it and therefore don't google the product and read these kinds of discussions. People Google a product when they're in the market or when the product is giving them grief.

Any one can email me a photocopy of a receipt of purchase for a Prima TV 27" that is less than 1 yr old? Since they don't put S/Ns on the receipts, we can share them and get all our TVs fixed or replaced for free. My Prima died 13 months after purchase. It's like they have an expire date FCOL. I just got a Prima Plasma 47" tv 7 months ago, the 1 year warranty should still be valid. Today it just went, with a very loud pop and sparks flying everywhere, and a very nasty smell. I can't find anywhere to contact Prima anymore, there website wont load any pages for me, and I have my doubts that Best Buy will help now. No more Prima for me, next time I'll invest a few hundred more for a well known brand.

Hey everyone. this makes me want to cry. I bought a 32inch last April and it started to fade a bit in March so I called Prima and they send it to the repair shop. My tv was fixed in 4 days however the shop wouldn't give it to me because Prima hasn't paid them for any of the tv's he's fixed for them. I have been on the phone with Prima for 11 weeks trying to get them to pay for it and have had no luck. I keep getting patched to different people and when i do talk to someone they tell me they'll call me back and then i have to call again after a few days because i don't hear back from them. On june 6th they called me and told me that they would send Best Buy a new tv because mine was non-fixable. I told them that my tv has set in the shop for 10 weeks fixed and than they said they would look into it. Once again i have heard nothing back. I called the repair shop and the owner told me that Prima closed their account with him. How is a large organization getting away with this?? and why do the sales people at Best Buy tell you that Prima is a good low end product? I don't know what else to do but i don't want to give in. I want justice....

Hey Mike,

I have Frank's number; her personally told me 4 weeks ago that he would have an answer for me in 48hrs. I got a phone call from Vic 48hrs later telling me he needed another 48hrs. Then i heard nothing back until I left an angry message on Frank's voicemail. Problem is, Frank hasn't called me back; someone by the name Francois did.
If anyone out there wants to call Frank; his number is 866-447-7462 ext 104
Maybe if we flood his inbox he'll do something. I called him again yesterday after reading all of these messages and left him a message requesting a reply within 24hrs. I'll let you know how it goes.

I also called the service centre again and they told me that Prima called them 10 days ago telling them that a cheque is on the way....I am very skeptical.

I bought a 37" Prima LCD HDTV in Jan 07, took it out of the box, plugged it in to make sure it worked, then packed it back in the original box, with all packing and static shield bag, to save for a new house I was building in late 07. Opened the box 4 days ago, hung the TV on the wall, powered it on and then... It blinked LCD TV for a sec, only lower left lamps came on, then promptly it shut itself down. Since it is about 1.5 years old, Prima said "tough sh@t", service centre said they could fix it for twice as much as me buying a new one. Over $1000.00 bought me a grand total of 5 minutes worth of TV watching. NEVER BUY PRIMA, and spread the word if you have had problems. That's the only recourse we really have. What a waste.

Prima 27" just bit the dust last night - toddler hit a button, channel number started to flash onscreen, I hit DSP on remote, flashing number went away and so did all functionality of the buttons on the TV. Cannot adjust volume, change channel (lucky we have digital) or turn the damn thing off unless I unplug it. Fabulous. Hubby bought at Sears outlet in late 2005 so long past warranty. I never was crazy about it as there always seemed to be a greenish tinge to one section of the screen but it was a TV, what did I care. Must be Karma - had hubby move out beginning of the month and now both the microwave & the TV have died.

My prima busted shortly exactly 21 days after the 1 year purchase date. Contacted Prima & like many other no such luck, however, I purchased mine with Visa and you automatically get a one-year extended warrenty. I received my complete purchase price from visa when Sears & Prima told me I was on my own. The paper work is like any other insurance claim but well worth it. Most cards carry this consumer protection (but they really don't advertise it). Its provided another year on all of my electronics so extended warrenties from the stores are usually wasted money when purchasing via credit card w/ consumer protection insurance. Just thought this tidbit may help someone who is in dispair over the hundreds of dollars wasted on a crap product like a prima tv. Good luck.

Hi, after finding the right remote code for an universal remote for use with my 27 inch Prima TV, I pressed a button and it did a factory reset... sort of. I had to unplug the TV set from the wall to close it. After, the sound was alright but the image is unwatchable (heavily skewed). I'm guessing it switched to China PAL 50 hertz and the menus were in Chinese. I was easily able to switch back the language navigating in the menus but I can't reverse it back to NTSC 60 hertz (supposing it's the right diagnostic). I wasn't able to get support or even a simple answer from Prima like all of you. An authorised Prima service center in Montreal basically told me that he never heard of a problem like this.

My tv just went down today. i turned it on and there's no image just the audio. i tried changing the input cables and wires to see if any of them were the issue but nothing changed. i just sent an email to their site www.pwwservice.com. hopefully i get a response back soon. i've only had my 17 inch LC prima for half a year so far. it's been perfect until now.

Well coming across this site has prevented me from buying one of their TVs. The shopping channel had a deal for a Prima 42" LCD with 1080p for $900 and splitting the payments over 8 months. While initially interested, I hda never heard of the name before and started to look online for any info. Initially I found nothing worth mentioning. Just sites linking to the shopping channel deal. Another little bit of searching I found this site. After reading your site im glad I hesitated. Thank you all for posting your experiences, good and bad.

I feel the same pain of everyone else here. I purchased a 27" Cineplus and it died in less than 18 months. Luckly my POS came with a two year warranty from Prima. After much waiting and complaining I was asked by Raja @ PWWService to take the TV to Brampton Color and Sound for repair. Well it took over 3 months of fighting and complaining to finally get it back all fixed up. For 3 months they claimed that the required parts were on back order.

Finally I decided to go back to the big-box store where I purchased the TV and I had them deal with it. Only when they threatened to return the TV did Prima suddenly have the part on the floor. Imagine that... according to the salesman at the store, Prima claimed to have the part all along... they just claimed to have never had a request to fix the TV.

I will never purchase another product from Prima, and I will also make sure that nobody I know ever buys one. Everyone at Prima Service seems to think it's ok to lie in order to get you off the phone. The simple volume of calls I had to make in order to get the TV back was immense. At the end of it, the people at Brampton Color and Sound wanted to charge me for the repair because Prima doesn't like to pay their bills. After a little more fighting... I finally got my TV back... it is now used as a back up TV in the spare room.

Prima's products have NO quality and their customer service is third rate. I would rather get a call centre in India and speak to someone named "Roger" with a fake british accent, then ever have to deal with Raja and his dopes at Prima.

Thank you Mike, and all who are leaving comments, for saving my family from wasting $700 on the 42 inch plasma my wife came home with the other day from Sears. They had a "Special Deal - One Only!" announced over the loudspeaker. A 42 inch Prima plasma TV - floor model with no remote.

This site was almost the only place online I could even find the existence of Prima. Needless to say the set was returned to Sears the next day. We purchased a nice 50 inch LG plasma instead from Best Buy.

It is interesting to see there is no further comment from Frank Macri. I would love to know if Livia or anyone else has actually experienced him or Prima doing what he says they are doing with their "new service regime". I'm guessing not.

Thanks to all of you we were spared the Prima Nightmare. I hope everyone keeps the pressure on and that no retailer is willing to sell their stuff. Mind you they will just slap a new name on it at that point.

I purchased a 42" Prima from The Birck. The unit broke after 8 months. It turns out after calling the Brick they sent out a technician from a company called TransGlobal. This was provided free of charge. They ran some tests and determined is required a DSB Board. So a month goes buy with me calling TransGlobal and four different part delivery dates were missed I started to call prima myself, I finally got ahold of a rep there and found out a DSB Borad is worth like $350 so I got the feeling they were delaying. As the tv only cost $850. I was able to get a hold of a customer service manager who was really good and I still have all his contact information, long story short then provided the birkc with an RA for me to go exchange the old tv for a brand new one.

I think the key is to continue to call daily or numerous time daily to get anywhere.

I feel really lucky. I received a 32" as a Christmas present about 3 years ago - and it's been relatively problem free. It does do this weird LINE / Distortion thing though - at least once a week - and once it happens you've got to pull the plug to get it turn off. It's basically locked up and non-responsive. I find it mostly happens when watching anything at 1080i though - 720p (knock on wood) has been relatively safe. I doubt that will help anyone at this point - but if it does - cool.

After reading all of your comments though I feel like I really dodged a bullet with my unit and have already started to scout out new ones. - Thank you for posting this Michael and thank you to Shawn @ MSTV who suggested Toshiba / Panasonic / Samsung - I'm definitely going to get one of those three.

I've had my Prima almost 2 years now and it has worked pretty well until the sound went on channel 4 a couple days ago. Only channel 4 doesn't work though. So weird. I also bought my friend a small Prima 1 1/2 years ago. I worry about the fire risk for both of us.

I bought these TVs with confidence because the clerk at Future Shop told me Prima is made by Toshiba. I can see I might be out of luck getting this fixed and likely need to just buy a new TV.

Purchased May 2008, Anyway, I just noticed that the screen is starting to show "tracers" so I started to research it...I guess mine is next in line to fail, thank God it was free, unless u take into account the useless piece of $2500 furnature that came with it! Thanks for these posts. I was considering Prima due to the price, but like most things in life... if its too good of a deal to be true, its probably too good of a deal to be true.

I could care less if a product is made in China, Canada or USA so long as it works well and there is good customer assistance.

My experience is a little different from all the rest. I found my 37" Prima in a dumpster and decidede to see what I could do with it. It worked after I got it but the picture & sound would disappear after a 1/2 to 1 hr operation. The problem appeared to be heat related. I took the back cover off and the large heat sinks on the circuit board were hot. So I jury rigged a fan to blow air on them. That seems to have cured the problem. The set has been working for 6 months now and the heat sinks all run cool.

Not only should everyone avoid Prima products, avoid anything with PWW warranty. They totally ignore their contracts. I didn't realize until I needed service that they never give a physical address, so there's no way to go after them legally. This is a deadbeat company.

I had a problem with my 42" prima plasma.. date 2004..NO PICTURE JUST SOUND. i just solved the problem. Its the main power board. I was only getting a 14 volt reading on circuit vs. It should of been 78 volts or something like that. There's a sticker on the back of the screen telling you what the readings should be.The VS was the only one giving me a incorrect reading. I replaced it with a good working main power board and the TV works great now. I checked the VS reading from the new board and it was were it should of been.So for sure its something in the VS circuit that's failing. If someone with some low level ground experience finds the actual part in the circuit that fails can you please post it. I'm just buying time with a quick fix and would prefer to replace the factory deffective components. Thanks and good luck

Best to try and find the board you need on ebay. It sounds like one of your Y boards have failed. Thats why your only getting half a picture. I have a 42 prima model ph-42t7 manufacture date 2005 that has a smashed screen from shipping. If your near niagara falls canada send me a message at craigedwards@sympatico.ca and maybe we can take a board out of mine to fix yours. I only have the one for parts.

My 27" Prima from SEARS has no red color.. just 2 months after purchase. Forget about warranty or any cr*p, this is a substandard product Sears Canada is carrying, the cost of a $27" PRIMa TV in China is $22 at wholesale cost, they brand this crap as PRIMA or any name you want it to be. So the people who own and run PRIMA america can be just any company buying this product from china.

I think certain models are worse than others. We bought the 32"LCD when it first came out in 2005 for $900(after taxes). In a few months it will be going on four years. No problems. Mainly use it for Xbox, Lap Top (VGA Input) & Satellite. *I was thinking about buying another one for my desktop computer since the current price is comparable to a 22-24" wide screen monitor. Now I wonder ...is my old one about to die or were the 32" models better? Seems like only a few people had issues with this model. A few working ones were returned because of this blog so I'm not convinced the 32"LCD model is a lemon. (I was expecting a life span of approx. 7-10 years.) I'll keep you updated because according to these statistics ...my old Prima might be in its last stages of glory!

Hey Guys Great Blog. Just wish I had found it sooner. Just returned my PS-42T8 tv
at FS. Not sure why, but I did purchase the extended warranty. This sure paid off. FS gave me a credit and with a little more cash I upgraded to a Panasonic 50". Staying away from those no name brands like Prima. Anyway, glad the nightmare is over for me. Had 3 of these sets. All three same issue no video sound, popping noice out of the back etc. The 3rd and last set did last the longest aprox 1 year. Oh if someone needs a remote for this tv drop me a line and I will send it to you as a Christmas gift. Toronto Mike et al, keep up the pressure on Prima, and fight to keep this crap off the store shelves. For those of you who did not purchase more warranty, my heart goes out to you..........

After reading through this post, let me say this. I was given an LC32U16 Prima LCD , sound but no picture, since I'm an electronics technician with 30 yrs experience I repaired it within one hour, solution, was the replacement of some faulty components within the power supply ,has been running one week non stop. BTW I did not get the original remote. If anyone is interested I can repair their unit ,I'm in Montreal. Thanks in advance.

Glad I found these reviews before making the trip to Canadian Tire to buy a Prima TV. They sound like the worst piece of crap ever to leave China or wherever they come from.

I bought a 32" Prima 4 years ago. Because I felt the deal was too good to be true, I was cautious enough to spend hundreds $ more to buy the store's 5 year in-house warranty. About six months ago, I started having problems with both the picture and the sound. The store referred me to a technician who couldn't repair it after a month. The store has offered to replace the TV, but because it has dropped the brand Prima, wants to offer me a 32" Insigna which they say is their own Brand name. Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks

Looks like I'm joining the unhappy crowd that got a Prima (POS) from sears. No video just sound. The on screen display still works but no picture.
Took it to a repair shop and they figured it was a video distribution board that needs to be replaced (they can't find one)as a ICU on it has failed. They even tried to cross referance just the ICU with another brand and no luck so same story no parts are available. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Never again for Prima and I'm not to happy with Sears either.

Pretty much the same story here as well. I bought a 27" LED Prima piece of crap from FS a year and a half ago and today it went on the blink with no audio/video and started to smoke when I turned it on to show my wife the problems. Well she went down to FS to complain to them about their products that they are selling and she was told to get out of the store. Now is'nt that the nice way to deal with customers
No more Prima crap for us and no more FUTURE SHOP either....

I also have a Prima 32 inch TV. It was purchased from Sears in Newfoundland in 2006 for Christmas of course.
About 3 weeks ago I came home from work, turned on the TV and the color was really bad. Very yellow and dark. It flickered back and forth between normal to yellow. Some days it stays yellow and others its fine but for the most part its yellow and hard on the eyes. I do not have a warranty and I haven't bothered to call Sears or Prima because I knew I would get no where. And I also think its a waste of time trying to get it repaired ater reading this Blog. Did anyone else have the same problem as me? If so is there anything you can do yourself to fix it? I'm now in the market for a new TV. Can anyone reccommend a brand? Thanks, Della.

Hey All! I bought a new Prima 42 inch Plasma TV from sears in Fall of 2006. Just under 2 years laster I have audio but no picture same issue most have. Sears is giving me the typical run around saying, gosh they never have had problems with Primas. To make a long story short, I have a 1500 buck piece of junk, totally useless after just about 20 months and Sears will NOT even send a repair person out to estimate a fix cost. they want me to spend more money with them to have an inspection done. This is such a joke. I've spent about 12,000 with sears in the past 5 years. They have just lost a good loyal customer. Their customer Service is a JOKE. Shame on them, shame on them for screwing the little guy that now has to pay for that junk TV for another full year.

My advice to everyone is not to buy any Prima Television... The stuff is made with cheap parts.. A huge percentage of Prima products are defective within 2 years if you are lucky. Then when you try to get it fix, there will be no parts because Prima simply carries no parts so you are just simply waiting for nothing.. If you guys are smart out there.. Prima will only rob you blind..

Hey all. I use to work for a retail that sells Prima. We no longer carry their products for a reason. Their products are below substandard quality. They take no care in ensuring the product meets the bare minimum working condition. Almost everyone that has purchased a Prima from our store had problems. We lost so much money carrying their products that we simply stop our relationship with them. You word is you get what you pay for. And with Prima, you will endure hell with what you pay for.

My mother's AKAI 42-inch plasma lost video but had audio (like most people are posting here). I took it in for repair and was told the power board was out. I googled the model (Samsung B4K-50) and this blog site popped up. Very informative reading these posts. The AKAI was purchased at Costco a couple of years ago and used very little. Costco of course advised us to contact a repair store. I cannot locate this power board anywhere and after reading these posts, it would probably be a waste of money trying to get this repaired. I thought it was interesting that Samsung was the part manufacturer. Probably is the same for Prima units.

I have had the same problem with my Prima, I purchased from Sears in December 2005, I am going to contact the BBB along with Lisa Madigan's office here in Chicago to see what can be done about our concerns. Sears and Prima should be held responsible for this farce and consumers should not be held responsible for this. Sears is suppose to be an upstanding store selling quality products.

They should either get out of the business or reimburse consumers for their mistakes.

Don't just lie down for their lies. Lets get busy and contact our officials.

My 42" PRIMA just died tonight. Best TV ever and happiest person alive right now (sarcasm here just a little bit). After reading the thread, I guess I will sell it for parts. With the great parts it has inside I should get $50. Never buy PRIMA...waste of money...waste of time. Just spend the extra money for something better and live worry free. What a waste...

Witrin
December 18, 2008 / 12:04

I bought a 37" LCD, PRIMA, from SEARS 14 months ago. The biggest reasons for the purchase being price, and the reputation of SEARS. I have bought a lot of product from SEARS in the past and have rarely been unsatisfied and when there was an issue it was resolved immediately.

Well...now the TV is having serious issues, (go figure - 2 months after the SEARS warranty ran out). When I turn mine on the "PRIMA" light at the bottom goes from red to blue but nothing else happens, and I mean nothing. I can't change any settings, I get no picture, no audio.

Fortunately for me, if I am willing to wait, the TV will eventually start working.

Unfortunately, this process takes hours...in fact I am waiting for it now and it has already been 4.5 hours.

SEARS has informed me that they will not help, and no matter how many times I call PRIMA's number, (that I got from this thread), I never get through.

Andrew, if you're still reading this thread, I would love to participate in any legal action that you may take.

Thanks for the place to vent Mike.

Get em everyone! When the class action does start I'm sure they have a way of contacting everyone who buys one. Just like they did way back when there was a class action on ram makers, they somehow locate buyers of the product. They are listed on the Brittish Columbia Better Business Bureau.

Here is the info everyone has been looking for link to their BBB page:

http://mainlandbc.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Report.aspx?site=164&bbb=0037&firm=1196449

also:
Prima Electronics

Not surprised they have an unsatisfactory rating! Obviously these guys have never had the overwhelming power of the FTC come down on them and crush their backs! Make sure you file a complaint with them too:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/index.shtml and https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

The more they get the better! It's time to crush these fools and show them our true power of a united consumer!

You all need to understand...it's not SEARS' fault that Prima is crappy. I sell electronics for sears, and i will not sell Prima to customers, but we only sell our products with manufacturers warranty unless you purchase a SEARS extended service plan. So i'm sorry you guys all have these issues with Prima, but stop blaming it on SEARS!! It's not our fault that you choose to buy a noname t.v.

Its not Sears I know But why do your company call the owners of prima products and try to sell them a warranty that will not be honoured. most times when the sears extended plan kicks in the tv is broke and the warranty won't cover the product

Hey everybody, I have a 2 year old 32" Prima with a broken screen. (kids). As far as I know the electronics are still good. It has been sitting in my basement for nine months now I can't bring myself to put it in the trash.I live in Ottawa, if some body would like to take it it's yours. Maybe it can be salvaged for parts? December 26, 2008 / 17:45

My 42" Prima plasma tv crapped out at 16 mths (wouldn't turn on). I too called Prima only to get their customer service reps to pass the buck. One eventually gave me Vic's email and after several emails he contacted me back saying there was nothing they could do. I wouldn't leave it at that and pleaded my case with him and eventually he said he got authorizaation to have the labour costs covered. How you might ask? He said "Look, I totally see where you're coming from but I can't go to my bosses with this case due to you simply being out of warranty". He then advised me to write another email giving full detail as to my situation and history of owning the product (what problems I had experienced) and "maybe" something could be done. Well after reading what you guys have come across from Prima I feel like a big winner in all this.

But since I've had it repaired it is now flickering the image on screen. Not all the time mind you but usually when I watch a very detailed and rich program (ie - family guy or live sports). I've managed to reduce that however by running a fan behind it to keep it cool (it's when it gets too hot then it REALLY starts to flicker). And playing any games on it is pointless as the flickering is non stop.

Once this p.o.s. is done I'm going to take it out to an open field and introduce it to my aluminum bat.

I also read that some people were talking of a class action law suit against Prima. If that's still a possibility I'm all for it.

We bought a Prima 32" and it was great for quite a while. It made it to 25 months and then part way through a day - the video just quit. I did have a surge protector on the line, so maybe that helped for the 25 months, but I was not convinced it was th eTV until I saw this site and everyone with the same problems. We now have a 42" - not Prima, I don't even see Prima on the Sears or Futureshop websites anymore. Good thing!

Well I wish I'd had found this site before I bought my 32" Prima plasma for the bedroom, bought mine last dec 30 at the brick, night of the 28th we were watching a movie and it made a slight buzzing sound then a loud crack now it has a crack in the screen from the bottom almost all the way to the top, I thought no problem it's still under warranty took it back to The Brick and they were ever so kind in directing me to the hell we know as PRIMA customer non-service, just dropped it off at the only dealer in town that will touch them, she gave me a nice tour of her back room with Prima tv's stacked to the ceiling waiting on repair parts some there for over a year, funny how plasma's are supposed to have a life expectancy of 60,000hrs I was hoping to maybe get 20,000 cause it was a cheap no name and was used maybe a couple hrs a night I doubt if i even got 1200hrs

I CHECKED INTO LAW SUITS A CLASS ACTION NOT WARRANTED AND IN A SMALL CLAIMS COURT YOU MAY WIN A JUDGEMENT BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO FORCE THE COMPANY TO PAY THE JUDGEMENT
SO I GUESS VIC AND HIS BOYS CAN TELL YOU ALL THEY WANT AND NOT DO A THING THERE IS NO RECOURSE IT SEEMS JUST SUCK UP THE LOSS BUT I TELL YOU ONE THING WE CAN STOP SHOPPING AT PLACES THAT SELL PRIMA AND TELL THE PEOPLE WHY WE REFUSE TO DO SO.. I JUST BOUGHT A NEW FRIDGE AND STOVE TO SEARS I SENT A COPY OF THE BILL SHOWING THE PRICE WAS MORE THAN THIERS BUT I DIDN'T MIND PAYING FOR IT BECAUSE OF THIER ATTITUDE I REALLY DON'T THINK IT MADE A DIFFERENCE BUT IT GAVE ME A PIECE OF MIND THANKS GUYS

I like this site and just remember is it's too good a deal to be true you can bet your ass it's a piece of crap.I bought a 36" tube TV from Future Shop about 6 years ago for under$6oo.It's now snapping and sometime a loud crack and lose the picture but it comes back. I think at about $7 a month it's paid for itself.I have been thinking about sending it to a shop for repair but after reading stuff here I'll just send it to the recycler. All the crap coming out of the far east is getting cheaper and that's because it's all crap.Days are gone that you get your moneies worth. Thanks to this site I will stay far away from any no-name brands of new TV's, but I hear the same thing about good brand names TV's as well.I will get the extended warranty with the new one and get it from a real small shop and not a box store. Good luck to you all and just remember Cheap is Cheap.

I wish I had done some research before buying a Prima 32" LCD from the Brick. The very same day I plugged it in the remote would not work unless you were standing no more than 2 feet from the set. I tried returning the TV to the Brick but they also told me to contact Prima. I have been using this piece of garbage for nealy 8 months without a remote. Calling Prima is like waiting for the second coming.

I wish I had of seen this before I bought my 42" plasma had it sitting around for month in the box because it was a family Christmas present. I hadn't had it set up for more than 3hrs and it
shut itself off and started smoking. I have tried to reach prima with no answer of course. Canadian Tire is trying to contact them, good luck. I have told Canadian Tire I would rather take a refund, but its over the 30 days so I need to go through head office so I will keep you posted. DON'T BUY THIS SHIT I NEVER WILL AGAIN.

I took my Prima 32 in for warranty work in Oct of 08 and waited until Dec before i heard anything back. Finally got an answer from repairman that it was unfixable and Prima had agreed to replace the set and that they would contact me. Well i waited for almost a month and then tried calling. Either went to voicemail or full mailbox. Left detailed messages with Vic W and Frank Macri and.......surprise...no reply.
Well i finally waited on hold on monday for 45 minutes and actually spoke to a living breathing human......who told me that they had nothing in their system about a replacement.....another surprise...NOT!! So fellow has told me that i should have everything taken care of in a week or so....better not hold my breath or i will be dead as a doornail.
I will NEVER EVER EVER buy a no name tv ever again. And if they do end up replacing the set i will pay the difference to upgrade into a Panasonic, Toshiba or Sony. Prima has the absolute worst customer service i have ever dealt with. Garbage

I have now joined the huge circle of owners of a Digistar (Prima) 27" LCD HDTV, with sound buy no picture. Purchased it in Oct/07, and it went in January 11/09. I can't get anyone to reply via 1-866-220-7116, nor by email using site form. Contacted reliable TV repair and they told me they had 3 on the shelf waiting to get parts. They can not reach Service Dept. to even order parts, and they are listed service reps. Sears has a sale on and I phoned the store re a 26" Sony...they have sold all but will bring one in for me in a week. $200.00 off Sony listed price, so I ordered it. I am thinking, if you approve, of sending your Blog, Mike, to the Better Business Bureau in Halifax. It could set a little fire. Permission given? Alice in Dartmouth.

We are now joining the prima nightmare. We got a 37 legend from TB. Its now 14 months old and it seems to take up to an hour to turn on. Once we turn it on to a blue light we leave it till it decides to join the world of the living. Once turned on we can't turn it off we have to either wait or unplug it. We have called Prima only to get voice mail. We have emailed TB to get no reply. When we emailed Prima they just gave us the phone number to call them. Now instead of turning it off every night we mute it and leave it on. After reading this site I now have moved the fire extinguisher to my bed room just incase. Anyway I wished I had of found this site before we bought it. I do feel sorry for Vic and Frank as I am giving their email address to my Husband to deal with them. Thanks Mike for putting this site up and to everyone else for your information on this company. Best of luck to everyone.

Well its me again. I took this $800 paper weight into the repair shop to be only be told that its not repairable as it needs a light panel and they can't get them. So now what am I suppose to do for a TV, to top it all off the store I got it from says there is nothing they can do because we didn't get the extended warrent, what a crock of crap!!!! Never will I get anything from this store and I will make sure that I buy a TV that has a strong name. Guess its really true what they say buyer beware!!! And Matt i'm real happy that your Prima works.. Lets hope that when it gets to 13 months that you are still saying the same thing.. Best of luck with that one. Hi

I bought a 32 HD LCD Prima TV last February and the HDMI components (3) stopped working last November. I started calling Prima Dec 17/08 and actually got a person (Bradley) who gave me a work order number and asked me to fax a copy of my bill from Best Buy. He told me a person from the service company world call me within 2 days. I faxed the copy of the receipt the same day. I tried calling Dec 24, 29,30 and emailing but never got through and left messages. I finally called Best Buy extended service and they gave me the name and numbers of the service depots in the area and gave me a claim number. One of the service depots agreed to come out based on the work order number and told me Jan 2/09 that the HDMI component was defective and they would have to order the parts. To date, Prima has not responded to them and they have told me that if they ordered the part today, they would not get for 3 to 4 months from Prima.

Good news. Called Best Buy again today and they told me that my extended warranty has a 60 day clause to repair or replace. Since I called them at the end of Dec and they recorded it, the 60 days start from that date. If my TV is not repaired by day 61, they will replace the Prima TV with another TV but not Prima since they no longer carry them. As well, I will be able to pay to upgrade to a better one that they offer me. I must keep in contact with the service depot and Best Buy but the extended Warranty will cover.

Just thought I would bring to the attention of anyone in a simular situation, to contact the extended warranty and start the ball rolling on the 61 days for repair. Just a reminder, my Prima warranty is still good but the extended warranty is in addition to the manufacturer warranty.

We shouldn't have to buy the extended warrent, when the warrent cost sometimes over $200. When you pay good money on an item the darn thing should last longer than 13 months. My $800 paperweight is not WORKING AT ALL... Turn it on get blue light leave it for the day and NOTHING HAPPENDS just a nice little blue light. I have had it even onpluged for the past couple of days. Just doesn't make sences.

Just a thought guys. Maybe you have the same problem I have in that the HDMI components are not working. If you are running on a HDMI cable, try hooking up component cables and see if you get a picture and sound. If this works, as least you have picture and sound.

Didital was good but now HD is super ... gues I just got a good one. So here I am, surfing, searching for help for my sad,.. wait for it,.... 37" Prima TV and shazzamm I end up here. Thought I googled a wonder cure, not quite. Too bad I didn't get here a year and a half ago. From what I've read looks like I won't waste my dime calling the repair man. Hi

I originally wrote on Jan 29 & 30 and thought I would bring you up-to-date on the Prima 32 saga that was still under the 1 year warranty. I was give free a 2 year extended warranty from Best Buy when I bought the TV. Best Buy has a 61 day repair warranty and the warranty says if the TV is not fixed within 61 days they will replace it. They are replacing the TV with a Samsung 32 TV(since they no longer sell Prima.)

So I will try to talk them into a free 2 year warranty on the new TV but will probably pay the $90.00 based on my experience with Prima.

Prima would never call me back when I left messages (over 20 left in 2 months) and numerous times I waited the 55 minutes on hold to end up being told thay were still all busy and to leave a message. The sevice depot I called and they came out to check the TV based on the work order number I had, could not even get Prima to acknowledge anyone was alive. She told me they had Prima TV's that came in under warranty that had been waiting for parts for over one year.

Sorry guys

Best bet is to use the TV as a plant holder. Do not try to call them as it just gets you frustrated. They were the worst company I have ever tried to deal with.
I cam remember the 407 when they first started and calling them and waiting on line over 1 hour but as least you ended up with a person and could get the problem solved.

Prima is a nightmare and trying to deal with them will raise your blood pressure and totally frustrate you..Is it worth your health.

If I lived in BC close to Prima, I would have picketted them. I have checked and Samsung head office is in Mississauga and if I run into problems, I can visit corporate in person.

i was checking out buying a Toshiba and saw this site. i have a 37 Prima and will replace it soon. Has beena good set but had I known it was Chiunese I wouldn't have bought it as I've had a similiar experience with a Chinese model form Walmart. Theday after I read the horror stories on it I was getting ready to pack it up to return it(42 " Plasma) It wouldn't power up. Got my money back and bought this. i was told at Best Buy that this was a repackaged RCAS. What a pile of crap. I'll buy the Toshiba and stay with name brands from now onon. Thanks for the scoop.

Hi, I own a Prima TV and wanted to give my thoughts...or perhaps a eulogy as the company has gone under. I should first point out that I am writing this in HK which makes Prima a local company for me.

I purchased the 46 inch version mainly due to price. It was by far the cheapest in the store but it came with a 2 year warranty. It crapped out about 18 months in with the TV refusing to switch on but they came and got it and repaired it in about 2 weeks. Now, about 2.5 years after purchase, the tuner has gone down so the TV is basically functions as a PC monitor for playing DVD etc. It has always had screen tearing issues, but not while playing games or movies, so i suspect this might be a Windows or the ATI3870 issue. I am looking to get the TV repaired by a third party servicer if I can get it fixed for less than a few hundred dollars. If not, then the money will go into a new set as they are all very cheap right now. Would I buy it again? I would probably buy a cheap Chinese brand again expecting a life expectancy of 3 years so long as there was a 2 year warranty. simply because they are so cheap an TVs (like PCs) get outdated very quickly. For example, my first flatscreen was a 32 inch Samsung which i paid almost 3k for. I still have it and it works fine after almost 6 years but its outdated technology with its highest resolution being 1070-768 and no HDMI.

I dont think the company was running a scam as many companies in its sector have gone down recently. A couple of years ago there were many different brands of Chinese TVs out there competing for the budget customer but when I went window shopping for a replacement for the Prima this weekend I noted that most of these brands had disapeared. One brand that seems to have survived is Olevi. I am assuming it is Chinese because of the price range but I may be wrong. I am BTW, typing this on an Olevi TV that I use as a monitor and it has been solid for 3 years with no problems.

well, i am sitting on the phone waiting for someone to answer the phone at PWW about my t.v. Of course no answer and after 15 min. they hang up on you!!!!!

Anyway, we got ripped off apparently reading this site is making me mad because I see that I either have to fit the bill myself or throw the t.v out and start over.

One day (t.v. only 5 months old) it stopped working no sound no picture!

of course they offer only a 3 month warranty and now after reading the other responses above i can see why.

TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP T.V and CUSTOMER SERVICE DO NOT BUY!!!

Alright, well I am happy to report that after a year and a half of phoning, complaining, e-mailing, and faxing I have received a FULL REFUND! Hopefully this helps some of you out there. I phoned and left them messages at least once a month from the time that my TV (42inch digistar plasma) was 5 months old. Of course they gave me the run around and nobody would repair it. (all the stores that they claimed were service providers, were not). Finally when my TV was 2 years old (which seems like a long lifespan compared to some of you) it just quit working. I phoned them again with the same run around. I phoned wal-mart and didn't get much help, until the 3rd phone call to their 1-800-328-0402 number. The wal-mart lady told me to e-mail all of my communications with Prima to them. I did. In the mean time I called Mary yang, constantly....and it drove her crazy, but out of all of them, she answers her phone the most.....perhaps 1 out of 10 calls. (unlike the others who answer 1 out of 150 calls) She always managed to get Vic (ext. 115) on the phone immediately. She is ext. 108....if she doesn't answer, it takes you to voicemail and gives her cell number which is no help. Finally I harassed them enough....or perhaps Wal-mart did, and Ping Wang started phoning me for a change....he is the one who apparently has the authority to give refunds he is ext. 104 and his cell is 778-829-6829. he phoned me from 604-821-9918. Amazingly enough, after I talked to Ping Wang I received a refund from my local wal-mart within HOURS. It took a lot of phone calling...and alot of messages, but I am so much happier without my Digistar piece of crap. the escalated help desk is ext. 154, but nobody ever answers. I think they paid me just to quit phoning, but either way...I don't really care why they paid me, just that they did!....hope this helps!

today surprisingly after exactly 24 months, the tv did not get switched on when i pressed the power button on it.

but i noticed that there are two small light indicators near the power button. During the problem time, only one green flash light was ON for few seconds and then it goes off and again if you keep watching after few seconds but in irregular frequency.

I searched for the warranty/contact info. of the prima but warranty is gone and hence thought of calling in phone/emailing..

email is given as : primasg@prima-me.com

i went mad for 2 hours trying all that i know in doing with electronic items.. because it just worked before 30 mins and suddenly it stopped for no reason...

finally i sent email and tried to call them at..1800-7746274 ...

contact email : primasg@prima-me.com

but phone number says invalid number and email gets bounced if you send some message...

FOR sure, i can understand that some CRAP is this..

finally, my room mate came and i told him about this problem and he said it worked well before 15 mins and he did not see any issues with it and i told him, can you try it now. He tried pressing the power on button and now both the RED, GREEN ( two indicators are on ) and the TV started working.. i mean it gave a display.

I can call this as a CRAP for sure because it wasted my time and energy for almost 2 hours.

somehow working till now....

Thank god & save people from this PRIMA company brand.

HEY GUYS , I WAS ALSO A VICTIM OF PRIMA. 8 MONTHS AGO MY 42 PRIMA TV WHICH I ONLY HAD FOR 6 MONTHS BLEW UP ON ME. IM GLAD TO SAY THAT AFTER 8 HARD FOUGHT MONTHS A JUST GOT A FULL REFUND ON MY TV. I WAS DEALING WITH VIC AT PRIMA. HE SCREWED ME AROUND SOOO MUCH. LYING TO ME , FALSE INFORMATION. ANYWAYS I JUST DIDNT GIVE UP . I EMAILED HIM EVERYMORNING WHEN I GOT TO WORK AND PHONED HIM EVERYDAY WHICH EVERY ONE KNOWS HE DOESNT ANSWER AND LEFT A MESSAGE EVERYTIME. ONE DAY DIDNT GO BY THAT I DIDNT DO THAT. so to the people that are getting screwed around , dont give up keep harassing them til they do something .

Hi everyone. I am a repairman for TV's and this brand is the worst I have seen. If you can find a good repairman in your area willing and able to reverse engineer some of the cables in them they will work ok (as I have done it on a few of them without any returns) but in general, if you are looking at buying one, stay away from Prima.

I bought a Prima tv (model #LC-23Y25)from Future Shop about 3 years ago. TV works fine, but the converter is shot and no universal remotes will work (We have tried every model from the ($9.99 model to the $89.99 model). Now the converter is stuck on "D-SUB no signal imput" and there is no way to get it out of this "source mode" manually. So now the TV is useless. Any advice? We used to be able to knock the converter back into working by giving it a good hit. Now it is shot. Anywhere you can suggest to get a replacement converter (RC-Q28M-OB)? I have been sitting on hold at the 1-604-821-9918 for the past 20 min and from past postings don't expect to hear from someone soon. Any help would be much appreciated!

Bought a 32" Prima LC-3237P about 6 months ago. Blew up tonight, lots of sparks and smoke. Needless to say its dead, haven't had a shoot at the custumer service people yet, but judging by these posts sounds like I'm in for some fun. Have all my warranty stuff. Wish me luck!!

So you thought you could save a few bucks by buying a cheap Chinease TV? You deserve it. They are not just made in China, they are Chinease. Buy Japanese. It's like cars - would you buy a Chinease car or a Japanese car. Even Jackie Chan said he would never buy a Chinease TV. You get what you all deserve. Panasonics may fail but they will fix them for you in the even they do.

I aolso bought a prima 27 inch tv from sears, it didnt work form the moment I brought it home, sears told me to call prima.. I tryed for almost a year and could never get ahold of them. Even though I called, emailed that I would go to the BBB they still didnt do a thing. Finally I got ahold of someone and they send the tv to a local repair shop who said the tv needed new parts but that prima was not being accomidating in sending the parts and manual the repair shop needed to fix the tv. So the tv sat in the repair shop for 10 months. Finally prima said they didnt have parts for that tv and gave me a new one. but here it is not even 10 or so months later and this new tv prima gave me has started acting up.. the picture is yellow and green.
Great another year with no tv and 5 pissed off children due to no tv.. dealing with prima crap again..when will this comoany be held responsible for its negligance and poor customer skills.. also for selling garbage that doesnt work, which means fraud...

my prima 32inch Lcd crapped out today....turn on and no sound or picture. Unplugged it and plugged it back in and it powered up once. Now light comes on and will not shut off. Crackling noise when first turned on but no pic or sound. Any idea if it is worth fixing or not? This is about 3 and a half years old. Bought it at Sears....Nov 05.

Do not buy anything PRIMA. They are complete junk. Just over two years and my 32" LCD is having the same problems as 90% on the people on this forum. Audio but not picture. What gives? $700 two years ago and now it is completely useless - even if I could get if fixed it would cost $300 easy.

Their customer service is also terrible.

Stay away!!!!

hello all again my crappy prima tv has been giving me almost the same problems now. so i had someone come in and have a look at it and said they would have to replace the whole main board since it was under store service plan i said go ahead order the part only to find out today when i called for an update 61 days later they informed me that the company had gone bankrupt and i could have had a new tv 60 day ago. so i say goodbye to a company that are making the worse tvs ever. hope the company get sued and all of us who bought there crappy tvs get some sort of compensation like one of the guys did after badgering them day and night. see all of the company execs in hell where they belong.

Some comments in response since XOCECO USA has been mentioned. The companies located in Canada known as Prima Electronics Inc., and Prima Worldwide Warranty Service have ceased operations. They were independent companies from XOCECO and U.S. XOCECO offices. From 2006-2008 the majority of the products sold in Canada under the PRIMA, Legend and Digistar nameplates were NOT manufactured by XOCECO or sold by XOCECO. The Canadian company offered a variety of LCD and plasma televisions (and other products) from such companies as SVA, Haier and others. Even by 2007 approximately 75% of the product line was NOT produced by XOCECO. While the United States office is aware of the problems with goods sold in Canada we simply have no means (or legal authority or capability)siblity) to know which goods were produced by whom. Some officers from creditors have been brought in recently after the Canadian independent company and service organization collapsed and are attempting to correct issues. Hopefully by July some posting will be made by those authorities in Canada.

Same story, a month after the warranty was up my Prima LCD stopped turning on. First I had to push the power button over and over for it to turn on, then it stopped all together. I was hoping to get it repaired but judging from the other comments, it won't be worth it to even try. I guess I'll be tossing it in the electronics recycle bin. There goes $1000 for nothing. I hate Prima.

Please do not buy any prima ......

June 21, 2009 / 23:41

So, I am having kind of the opposite problem everyone here seems to be having... The TV won't power off. If I watch it for more than about fifteen minutes or so, it stops responding to the power button; both the one on the remote, and the one on the side of the TV. It just ignores the keypresses. Sleep also doesn't work; after the time runs out it just stays on.

Everything else works, menus, embedded DVD player, etc. The damn thing just won't turn off. If I want to power it off, I have to pull out the power cable and plug it back in (where it remains off). Then I can toggle it on and off fine, until of course I watch it for a short while and it gets stuck again.

Anyone else seen this before? Anyone know what I can do about it? It's a 32" Prima, bought it a few months ago. It started doing this a couple weeks ago about the time when I connected my HTPC to it via the VGA cable; do you think that might be related?

Mike
June 30, 2009 / 13:39

Man I wish I would of done some research before we got this tv... Bought 37 inch prima lcd hd just over a year ago... About a month ago it's started acting up you would go to turn it on and it would take 10 minutes to turn on.. As of today it wont turn on at all but like others have already said u can hear the audio... What a kick in the balls I hope those cheap ass bastards rot in hell!

I was lucky i did not buy a new 47" Prima LCD for $900 in liquidation sale with no warranty. The salesman told me it was made by Samsung and Panasonic. He stated that everybody who purchased Prima was very happy and satisfied. But something inside me told me to be very careful. So i bought a new 50" Samsung with full warranty instead for a few hundreds dollars more. Now that i read this site,it was a "GOD BLESS" that i did not purchased a Prima. I hope Samsung will be better.

Follow-Up of our earlier comment (posted about 26 responses before this one):

All of the Canadian operations for Prima Electronics and Prima Worldwide Warranty (both managed and operated independently from the U.S. operations which are wholly owned by XOCECO), have ceased operations. However in late July the bank (HSBC) which handled receivership of the Canadian operations sold the assets which included parts and equipment for many PRIMA, Legend, and Digistar (a brand sold exclusively in Canada at Wal-Mart). These parts are available from Global Services Supplies, also an authorized parts distributor for Haier, Insignia, Dynex, RCA, Westinghouse, Vizio and others. The contact is sales@globalsemi.com and the toll-free number is 1-800-668-8876. As a reminder, XOCECO USA was not the primary supplier or manufacturer for the PRIMA, Legend and Digistar products sold in Canada, and never manufactured or produced any of the many TV/DVD or TV/VCR combinations. Those units were primarily manufactured by Haier, SVA and others. Additionally Prima Technology (a United States company not to be confused with Prima Electronics of Canada) has maintained a "A" rating with the Better Business Bureau for many years, while Prima Electronics, Prima Worldwide Warranty, PWW Services (all in Canada and independent companies from XOCECO USA and not wholly owned by XOCECO) have consistently held "F" ratings from the BBB. We obviously regret the confusion (and limited overlap of producing some limited models under the Prima and Legend brands --- for models sold in the U.S. by another independent company known as Alux, Inc., which was managed and owned by overlapping management in Canada at Prima Electronics.
We do continue to manufacture a variety of U.S. brands, but have NO reports of similar problems for the goods we directly manufactured and sold, and continue to sell within the U.S. We hope this further helps resolve some of the issues and confusion in the names and companies. Thank you.

I use to be a servie depot for prima. Speaking from a techs point of view. Prima is a very low end product. Hardly worth purchasing. The technology itself is poorly designed. The solder on the boards are almost all the time cold. I can remember doing some warranty work for them. Took months to get payed. We finally stopped servicing their stuff. Recently herd that they went bankrupt..
Products to buy that are made with great quality are panasonic, toshiba, samsung, lg......

This comment is to Xoceco USA

How come Xoceco did not sue the company in Canada that was selling products not manufactured by them but using their name? They had nearly 3 years to sue them. Also why did the corporate company not make it known that this conpany was selling products with their name on it but not their products? It would have been fairly easy to let it be known via the media to potential consumers and to the suppliers that bought their products. Some of the suppliers were Best Buy, Future Shop, Sears, The Brick and others. These are major suppliers of this product in Canada and USA.

I bought a 42 Prima plasma in 2004 that is still working and another 32 LCD in 2008 that broke down within 7 months. I was one of the lucky ones in that Best Buy gave me a free extended warranty. They also replaced the crappy 32 Prima with a Samsung that is very superior to the Prima.

How are we as potential buyers of any future Prima products to trust that we are buying the real item? This has to be a disaster in customer relations.
No Prima product will be trusted in Canada. How can a major multinational company allow that they did not try to rectify the issue during the 3 years. The parent company Xoceco is to disgraced that they did nothing in Canada when this was happening.
How do you think it would look if this blog was turned over to the media with you guys stating that you were aware of the problem but the company was not connected to you. Even allowing the assets and therefore the defective TV's to go to another company during bankrupty is disgusting.

You guys are as responsible as the company in Canada that sells them. You could have at least told the suppliers that buy your products both in Canada and the USA of the issue.

You did nothing and should be held responsible for the mess in Canada.
I will never buy another Prima product. With most of our products in Canada coming from the USA, this is a concern of the potential of misleading products.

There are over 500 complaints above and I hope you guys have trouble sleeping.

Here's one I use frequently for these bastards.
Go and but the exact same product, put the broken one in the box wait two days and return it to the store claiming that it didn't work when you plugged it in and you want your money back.
Sometimes you have to get creative and change a back cover or plate to return the original serial #. Sometimes it's the only way to get satisfaction.

I have been servicing tv's in Montreal for a very long time. It's true that the workmanship could be somewhat better, but such is the case with low priced item's in general. If anyone is interested in repairing their units or selling them to me, let me know, I'm willing to help you either way.

Thanking-you in advance,

The American companey is not telling the the whole storey. They did make many of the unit Prima sold. They also had a interest in Prima.

Prima receivership in Toronto--Maynards- also provided misleading/misrepresentation informations to consumers. They stated that Prima is made and owned by Panasonic and Samsung. Parts and services are available by Panasonic and Samsung. Prima products are so reliable that there are no return what so ever. They sold so many, are the best seller. "If you don't buy now, they will be gone tomorrow. Hurry! Hurry!".

Hi again.
Prior to the end of 2006 almost all TV's sold by Prima were made by the Xoceco TV companey in China. These included Digistar and Legend units. We even had a enginner from Xoceco inthe building trying to hepl us with some of the parts supply problems. After this time Prima sold other companey TV's including all units with built in DVD. Xoceco held interest in Prima as well as thier US arm Prima tech. Xoceco is right that they may not be the right party to go after for the current sets under warranty but they were sure the ones for all the earlier sale people had problems with. These problem included poor designs which cause problems in HD reception and copy guard as well as problem getting parts because the factory could not tell us the exact part for the model and serial number of the unit in for repair.

i bought a 26 inch prima with dvd player. what a disaster. i bought it in april and by may the dvd player no longer worked. called the store where it was purchased and was told to contact prima. i now realize the company was already in receivership. same experience as many others....long waits on phone, ending with being disconnected or asked to leave a voice mail to which no one responds, blah, blah, blah. never did get to speak to a human at prima. however, after a few frustrating months i was able to get a store credit from the place of purchase. i hope prima contributes in some way to environmental protection programs, as a lot of their products appear to be headed to landfills!

A friend gave me a big prima tv. Seeing as im poor and cant afford fancy tvs, i used it.The tv died under a year, but when it was alive it did a horrible screeching sound. Not an annoying screeching, a creepy screeching that makes you wonder what they put in those things. I happily no longer watch tv, everything can be found on internet easily and with no ads. I have to thank prima for putting the last nail in the coffin of that nasty habit. But if unlike me you want to keep the nasty habit, don't buy any prima, it will thwart your plans.

My girlfriends father bought her a Prima tv set for her new apartment in August 2008. Today, September 15th, 2009...guess what....Tv is on the fritz. While watching the news the colour started to go weary, the screen then went black. We turned it off, then on again and all you could see was......nothing, but we had full audio. After about 3 minutes, funny colours appeared and then at that point, we couldnt hear much and we no longer were able to change channels. We called the warranty number and it said that this number has been disconnected with no further information given. After reading these reviews we find out that the company is bankrupt and we're SOL! Last time we RECEIVE or BUY a cheap tv...

Boy, am I glad that I found this site! I was in Maynards in Coquitlam today and thought I had found a great deal. Thought I would go back this weekend and pick up the "great deal 47" tv. of course the sales line that they used was exactly what I read here! No Prima for me!

Hi Everyone,

I only see one common pattern going on with these tvs, burn out at specific times. Can you give feedback as to how much u use it a day average?

I use my 42" pretty much to just pop in a dvd every other day in my bedroom, since i am mostly on the computer and with a date stamp of sept 07 on the back of my prima tv, it still works, not really HD because there is some snow on it, but only when there are black backgrounds. Any way maybe they have like projectors a certain life span then die?

I got mine at the brick for $890 back in xmas 07.

Feedback?

i was in a maynard store in the lower mainland today and i have almost "successfully" bought a prima 32 in for $347. It was almost five, and the cashier said she would not ring it. Thank you for the comments, which helped me to learn that i should not go back to buy it when they open again tomorrow. They described that the "no warranty" was caused by the bankruptcy of a failed distributor. Obviously, somebody was not telling the truth.

Don't I feel like an idiot. I live in Vancouver and saw this great deal (47" 1080p TV for $699). Because it was at a liquidation place, I figured that was why the price was so low.

One week, count 'em 7 days later the TV has the symptoms described above. I turn it on and sometimes it stays on, but eventually goes black.

Does Prima even exist anymore? Is the warranty I have good for anything, or is the TV totally gone? I feel like such an idiot for buying it, but I guess it was my own fault for not looking up testimonials like these.

Well as of 12:00PM local time my 37"LCD PRIMA Cineplus(Bought in late 2006) has died. Sound, no picture. After sitting here for the better part of two hours perusing this site and the links it has, I have to say thanks to TorontoMike and the rest that followed for enlightening us to the problems with this brand and company and the shoddy ethics therin. As I said, I bought this TV almost three years ago and have had it running almost 10hrs a day, but at the cost of $2200(TV mount, extended warranty, etc, etc) and reading the posts, I am of the belief that the recyclers will get it and I shall move onto a better brand(not before taking it to use as a target at the range....If I can't use the parts no-one else can). Like Paul said too.......It was my own fault for not researching the product(of which I will do for any entertainment purchases in the future). All of my other equipment is Panasonic, I guess I shoulda stayed with that brand. If any suits are filed, you can count me in.

My 42" Plasma lasted almost 4 years, we bought 3 at the same time, one left running. I have taken the unit apart and performed all the tests with correct results suggesting failed display, scrap now. Just wanted to note, all internal components are Samsung, including the display and driver boards. I know I will remember this when selecting the next unit.

I Have Worked on several of these tv sets and the problem is Almost always caused by bad capacitors that cause chain reaction devastation in the whole tv beyond repair,no parts even available, the capacitors are counterfiet and from china,it affects all prima products eventually due to incorrect chemical composition in capacitors within the power supply and regulation areas, have a prima checked by a real tech and you will see the parts are not anywhere near the values printed on them, someone should get ctv involved as its only a matter of time till someone gets hurt from one of these fire hazards, also the crt tv circuit boards are not fire retardent within regulations...i have mailed persons but been ignored so far,we used to do warranty but never got parts in a whole year.

Purchased Prima from Sears about 18 months ago. Used only 1-2 hrs a day. Lasted about 9 months. Just recently got around to taking in for repair at local tv repair shop. Same problem as everyone else, sound but no picture but my audio would just come by itself in middle of the night. Kind of creepy. Repair shop said diagram for TV layout could not be found anywhere including internet. Out $450.00 for about 80 hrs of viewing pleasure. If you find a Prima product dont buy it. Don't buy from Sears they were aware of these issues but continued to sell the product. Wish I could get it fixed for less than 200.00 but more than that would not be worth it. Prima/Sears Suck!

I was watching tv just last night, woke up this morning to realise i had to no picture on my Prima tv. It's a 27 inch crt that i paid about 150$ for which isn't really so bad, i'm glad, but i'm never buying a prima again and i'm glad i'm not the only one. Misery loves company. The problem is simply the electronics. I had the picture vanish one day, just like the rest of you. Took it to Coltech on Kenora St in Hamilton, Ontario,Canada, and within 3 days it was fixed and working fine! My problem is only that for some unknown reason, when it broke, I threw out the remote...anyone have a remote they wish to part with?
Prima is bankrupt, so dont bother. All I can suggest is you contact the head office, consumer relations dept of the place of purchase and rant and rave. These days, stores want your business. I have yet to not get what I want when I make the store step up.

Dorothy

Misery loves company. Picture one minute, gone the next. 2 yrs old. Company is Bankrupt. I took my TV to Coltech on Kenora St Hamilton, Ontario Canada. It was fixed in 3 days, cost 150.00 incl tax. Electronic problem. Simple enough. One problem, in my haste, I threw out the remote...darn. Anyone want to donate theirs?
Cheers, Dorothy

Dorothy
December 11, 2009 / 11:17

One more thing...Coltech also bought all the parts etc from Prima. So if you cant get a part, these people would be the ones to contact.
No matter where you buy something, there is always a customer relations dept. Go to the top person. I have never not got what I was entitled to. And I do mean replacements of another kind. Complain in a proper and business like manner, dont forget, they want our business...always go to the top.

Well, after I moved into my little apt in Coquitlam about 4 years ago all I could afford was a Prima 22 inch, not even a flat screen. I paid $125.00 incl taxed/etc. This tv still going strong. Remote still works, colour good but will upgrade early next year and put my Prima in the bedroom.

The other day I helped my brother un-mount his 42' Prima Plasma off the wall and we took it in the garage and smashed it to bits with a cricket bat.

Just as the warranty was up, the power light started going red to blue and no picture. We were both having a bad day so what a better day than to take it out on a Prima and really make it a worth while purchase?

The bracket it sat on worked better than the tv. After reading these posts I emailed Prima by going to their Corporate contacts on their website Prima.com and also shared my story with them so the person reading it would get a good laugh before deleting it. I also recommended they close up shop.

I did this out of frustration and suggest all of you also contact them to hopefully get through to their management team.

Man, I never knew that there were so many Prima TV owners that are having the same problem. ie initially audio but no video, then if I turn it off and back on it worked. That was 2 weeks ago. Just last week the only thing I see is the red light turn to blue when I turn it on..and nothing else.
Is also a 32" that I got in 2006 so I got at least 4 years out of it..but wondering if its worth trying to get it fixed??
Any ideas???

To answer Daryl, I too, have found the website to be just the home screen and nothing else...and this has been the case for about a year! I bought a 37" Prima in January '07, and I now feel everyone's pain. Not only do I not have picture, but no audio. To top it all off, the tv turns on (at least the blue light comes on), but can not be turned off unless you unplug it. Not with the remote, or the power button on the tv. Also bought from Best Buy, and there is probably a good reason that they do not carry Prima brands anymore...Geek Squad said "good luck" with getting ahold of Prima! Time for a new tv, I think!

Most problems are the bad caps. 3 main ones, will take out the picture or sound or both. Both makes it 100 percent the 3 main caps.

Great place I found to repair this problem.

Bought a 42 inch prima, it was dead with no picture or sound. Cost me 50 bucks.
Took it to
K S Video & Audio
8029 Fraser Street,
Vancouver, BC V5X 3X5
604-876-8320

they use to be a prima repair center. They know all the issues and what places to get parts from.
the repair cost with tax 157.00
So for me a 42 inch lcd tv cost a whole $207..
Kind of like that

I bought a 42" PRIMA about a year and a half ago and it is now defunct. I bought it without warranty so I have been screwed since. There is audio but no picture. The local shop told me that PRIMA is out of business therefore making it harder to get the required parts. Thanks Duane for the contact info in B.C. So, Prima 42 inch plasma TV, i have had it set up in my living for an entire month. I was watching a pvr'd show and the picture just left and I had was sound. Luckily I didn't pay for the TV myself, it was a prize at a work party. I would still like to have it fixed. Any suggestions? I live close enough to Richmond where apparently this super secret headquarters resides of "Prima" that I can phone them or personally pay them a nice visit. But I would rather it not come to that.

I am pretty pissed though as it has only been really just over three weeks that I have the TV. Craptastic much? Plus, I found it retarded that the remote was so simple and the component and s-video and hdmi outlets in the back were so cramped. And there isnt nearly enough of them for a normal person to have the room to plug in the pvr box, dvd, blu-ray and video game consoles.

After 6 years!!! I read all these posts, and I am amazed that you guys all had these pieces of shit give up so soon. I only paid around $400 I think... it would seem I lucked out big to have had this fucker this long. WOW. Yeah, PRIMA SUCKS ASS. I am sure they are on there way into oblivion so as to avoid lawsuits for house fires. (eventually) You have my condolences folks. Let this be a lesson to use your credit cards and NOT be stingy when getting that next flatscreen! Can you say,"Brand name"? ;-) Oh, and FUCK YOU PRIMA!

Almost everything sold in North America is made in China now. They are well priced and i don't have one single problem in terms of quality and durability. I also make a lot of money from the Chinese because they came to invest a lot of money in North America, Toronto and Vancouver properties in particular. PRIMA really spoil Chinese reputation! They should not even be printed MAKE IN CHINA!

Well, our 32" Prima finally took its last agonized breath today. It had the familiar problem described by others of not turning on. This progressed from occasionally turning on from a blue screen to just being able to get a blue light on the front and nothing. We tried the unplugging but that too has stopped working. It is now the proverbial "paperweight". I found this site because I optimistically thought maybe it was an easyfix glitch. I have to admit that it was almost overwelming to read all the posts from the others here. I think this whole issue is really sad because I think that a tv should have a lifespan in the 1000/s of hours , not hours. We are buying a tv with a better background this time and lots of warranty.

I Purchased a Prima LC-37T26 from Sears in late 2008, didnt seem like a bad t.v for the price ate the time. Warranty is only 1 year, over the past two weeks gradually its been taking longer to start up, the last week it was alive it was taking 15-20 minutes to start up and now it will not start up at all, no picture, no sound, no nothing. i guess i am stupid to think that a $1000 t.v would last longer than 2 years. no more prima or sears for me.

I bought a 32inch prima Lcd about 4 years ago and soon after I would experience the no picture problem, and would curse my cheap buy & turn the tv on and off again until I got a picture. Now a week ago the tv has developed a 4 inch vertical fussy rainbow patch running right down the tv. Occasionally it will go away if I turn the tv on and off again repeatedly....What a piece of crap. I dont even know if its worth contacting a repairshop. Time for a good brand any suggestions?

Wow,our Prima is three years old and guess what, we are losing video. The screen developed a serious flicker and now the picture is slowly fading away.(Slow death). When I called Future Shop I was told I could try to get an electronics repair service to fix it but it would most likely cost more than the TV. When I asked if this was a problem encountered often for a 3 year old TV I was told oh yeah, 3 years is a good life expectancy for any brand of TV. I say BS after reading all the comments here. I will never purchase a product from Prima again nor will I go to Future Shop as their help was useless. FYI we purchased a Samsung around the same time as our primary TV and it works great! Worth the extra money for sure!!!

I bought a 32" PRIMA TV 15 mo nths ago. The picture was not as crisp as the more expensive TV's, but the price seemed affordible. Two weeks ago the DVD player in it stop working and two days ago it just went blank. It does not turn on. I tried to contact the company but the phone number is not in service. Could we all file a class action suit against the company? This is a real ripoff!

Hey, my Prima survived for close to five years! I bought it at Future Shop in the fall of 2005 as I recall, and it was the *floor model* meaning it had probably been on for hours prior me buying it. A few weeks ago, during the World Cup actually, when I turned on the TV I would occassionally get no video, audio only, but if I turned it on and off enough times, the screen would stay on. Now, it won't turn on at all.

Annoying, but I guess my TV lasted longer than most. I may have to scour the neighborhood on garbage day to pick up someone else's discarded CRT TV for my basement.

OMG Prima has to be the worst company out there. Here's my story:
I purchased a 19 inch prima tv for my familyroom so company would be able to watch the shows they like. Well 11 months later I went to turn the tv on for my sister inlaw visiting from Ontario and Guess What...The darn thing cought fire. Lucky for me she grabed the tv and threw it out the front door into the rain. I too had the run around from Prima. They finally sent a new tv set and picked up the old one. I'm still waiting for them to explain what happened. I will never buy another prima ever.

Bruce
August 18, 2010 / 19:50

I was given our Prima 27" Flat Screen LCD. Woke up one day and no picture, just like hundreds if not thousands of them I'm reading about here. I got mine mine at Bestech Electronics for $185.00 and change but...had I not just been given the piece of junk...I would be tempted to try suit against Prima. They're website is completely useless and their warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I will most definately boycott anything with the Prima name on it and suggest to everyone I can do the same.

August 22, 2010 / 23:16

maybe two years ago I won a 19" prima tv, I was using it as a pc monitor. It worked for just over a month than one day it would not turn on. I would say I spent the next six months trying contacting prima warranty. Seeing there was no repair shop near by they said they where going to refund the money through sears where it was purchased. I never did see any refund, I mad an attempt at contacting prima a short while later to find they had went bankrupt. (so much for the refund) I guess I was one of the lucky ones in the seens that I never paid for it in the begining.

I have a Prima 24" LCD TV (Model no. LC-23Y25). I have a bit of an odd problem with it. If I watch it for 5 hours or more and than turn it off, it refuses to power back up unless I keep it unplugged for about a week. During the time it refuses to power back up, the standby light remains on, and if I press the power button on the TV or on the remote, the light will dim as if its about to come on and than just go back to being a steady red. Anyone have any ideas about this or a good location to take it to for repairs. I am located in Scarborough.

Most you bozos aren't even credible, you dont even note if you have an LCD, CRT or a plasma, I've had a 27" Prima CRT HD TV for five years and it has been a great TV with no problmes, and it was only $400. For that price you could buy a retail warrenty and had your tv REFUNDED BYT HE STORE and still have gotten a great price but ofcourse most of you are no that smart.

I recently purchased a 50 inch LCD monitor by Prima no remote. Plugged it in and watched one movie. The next day we went to watch and we received the black screen and intermittent sound. I think it has something to do with the input setting as it turns on ok and every once in awhile I do get a picture. What sucks is I shipped it to another country to be used.
I am also missing the remote. Anyone know where I can pick up the remote. Seems universal remotes do not work.

Bought a Prima TV from Futureshop just over 4 years ago. Model LC-27U16.

About 6 months ago the tv caught on fire and filled the bedroom with black smoke. I had the 4 year PSP. Took the TV into FS and they fixed it, which only took about a week or 2. Great! Everything was working perfect. I really liked the tv and found the picture quality very good.

Until 2 days ago.
Turned on the TV herd a weird sizzle and then no picture only sound. Similar to what I have read here. Phoned Futureshop warranty to see if I could get it fixed again, only for them to tell me that my warranty had expired 12 days before and that they could do nothing for me. I was upset to say the least.

In the end I bought a Sony and hope i wont ever have another problem like this again.

Given that I knew what i was getting into at the start with a "no name" TV, things shouldnt start on fire. Never again.

I have a sweet paper weight now.

Prima repair
I am repairing a Prima LCD TV LC-37T26. I'm just learning about the big screens. I found one problem on the logic board that resolved the power supply ON voltage. I have a second problem on the logic board with no Back Light ON voltage, therefore black screen. If anyone is scraping a set in Durham Region or the Toronto area I'd love to pick it up for parts and see if this is a common problem or I can get one set working out of the two. If I figure out a quick fix for these TV's I'll post it up for all.

Have had a Prima 27" tv for about 3 years now and it has not been used much as it is in the bedroom - maybe used two hours a week! This morning it would not respond to my cable digital remote, only blank screen or vertical lines in an assortment of colours!

After reading a lot of the above comments I will never buy another Prima - am unplugging it just in case!

Would be pleased to join a class action if one were to take place.

I have 3 contact numbers I got for Prima they are:
1-866-447-7462
1-877-426-5698
1-866-220-7116
I had the same problem I had to disconnect the power & cable, then plug the power back in and do auto channel search when has completed the replace the cable and do the channel auto search again and that should bring the picture back. If not I hope these numbers will help.

Funny reading this. I can't say the TV is complete crap. I bought a 42" plasma 5 years ago and it's running. It has two dead vertical lines across the screen; 1 midway, 2nd one a few inches above the bottom. Sometimes when I turn it off it comes back on again (seems to only happen using the remote). All in all it wasn't a bad purchase. I think it was $1400 at the time and you can get a good quality 42" these days for half that. I probably wouldn't buy one again. I just picked up a Samsung Blu-Ray player and it doesn't list Prima as a TV it supports so we're back to 3 remotes again. Still it's had it's problems and it's been a pretty good unit.

I thought I would go on the net to find a troubleshooting guide for my 19" Prima HDLCD TV that I bought about 4 1/2 years ago. Sounds like I am one of the lucky ones! Mine lasted a long time in comparison. I was watching a hockey and there as a soft click and I lost my picture. I can't even get audio. Incidentallmy son bought a Prima home theatre DVD player with surround sound and all the trimmings. I have it set to the auxiliary function for sound when watching our other TV. When you switch it on and then over to aux, you can hear the mechanism for the DVD player going. It even keeps running when you turn it off when it is on aux. You have to switch it back to DVD and then off in order to get it to quit. Talk about crap. Never, ever again.

I bought a 47" HDLCD Prima, had it for 5 years+ and the clicker did work for about a year now. Well the picture and sound went. I called Leons for some help as to were to turn to, since I had read this sights reviews. I was told that it was time to buy a new TV. Hmmm!! I called my TV repairman and he did some work to one of the boards at the back. Had my TV back for under 200 hundred dollars and am enjoying it.

Hello Everyone. It bothers me to see people having problems with retailers and manufacturers who will not support their goods concientiously things have changed since the " old days ". I am an electrnics technician since 1970 and salvaged a 2007 Prima LV2612P lcd tv from the recycle bin LOL... I took the thing apart and found 2 things : an under designed power supply and a wrongly wired unit. the power supply had failed with a bang, it was obvious to see, and for less than $20 in parts I fixed it, but it made me wonder if most of the problemas here are similar. One reason for the failure appears to be the hot and neutral wiring to the power supply are reversed, and so the protection on the TV is compromised. One can check this by opening the case and looking at the power wires going to the PS. the PS will be marked L and N and if the blue wire goes to the L then you have bad wiring. It is a simple thing to pull the wires out of the connector and reverse them to solve this part of the problem. If your set has not yet failed this MAY prevent it from failing. I believe that many of the other problems of audio and system control issues are related to the PS; since when a PS goes bad or flaky it can throw noise and errors into the whole system. This one will probably go back to the recycle bin, looks like the last owner gave it a kick and broke the screen, too much $ to fix that, LOL. I hope this helps anyone here, feel free to email me. Hi all, definately gonna say im never going to buy Prima. We had one of their tvs given to us and i think its a 42". Same issue, no video but has sound. With all the problems and with Prima not honoring the warranty, has anyone thought about getting together and filing a lawsuit? They obviously make garbage...

Hello fellow Prima owners. It looks like those whose TVs have gone to that great home theatre in the sky are S.O.L.

Here is a quote from the Better Business Bureau, dating back to some time after February 26, 2009:
----
"According to information in the BBB files, it appears that the company is no longer in business. The phone numbers the BBB had for this company are disconnected, and directory assistance does not have a listing for this company. The BBB's mail to this company has been returned as undeliverable. If you have an unresolved dispute with this company you may wish to seek legal advice."

As well, here is a note about PWWService's web site from AboutUs:
----
Pwwservice.com is no longer a working website
broken This site has been flagged as broken by the AboutUs community.

Sure enough, the website is inaccessible.

As far as my 32" Prima LCD set goes, I've had it since December 2006 and it's going strong. After reading all the comments here, though, I won't bet on how long that string of luck will continue.

Hello everyone. My 42" prima plasma just died after 5 years of solid use. It is model PS-42D8C. If you have the same damaged TV sitting in the your house collecting dust because the screen is gone but the sound is still there consider this: I will pay cash for your power board which is Samsung B4K-50 LJ44-00055A which is the upper middle big board with those numbers stamped at the top. Your tv is gone anyways and I need that power board to fix my tv so email me at lukasprzyk@yahoo.com. Thank you, Lukasz

I managed to fix my 32" PRIMA LCD. I sent it to a repair shop down town Cairo, Egypt, they replaced the "Video Card" as they say, it costed me about $150 (EGP900). Now I do not lose the picture any more.

Maybe somebody can help me, my 27 inch Prima tvs remote quit working, so I got a universal, the other day I drop the remote on the floor and it separated a bit, so I squeezed it back together (while the tv was on) the tv went all weird and now everything is in Chinese and I only get a panoramic picture, I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. The tv only came with the option of english, french & spanish, but like I said above all the writing is in Chinese. Any ideas?

Wow...If I only knew. We bought our 42" Prima Television from Walmart a few years ago and while watching a television program the tv blew up with sparks and then the typical electrical burnt smell.

same issue for me as well ,42 inch plasma Prima, had mine about 3 years and one morning .. pooof, smoke and all, still had audio but no pic , i replaced the buffer boards along with the attached mainboard and still no go . long story short .. its JUNK.
the funny part is the folks on here talking about buying a quality tv like a "samsung" ... hahahah the whole inside of the prima tv is SAMSUNG. its stamped on EVERY BOARD.so one can only assume they bought discounted samsung equipment by the billions and built a bunch of crap tv`s and stamped the "prima" name on it, sold out and skipped country. anyhow i now watch a real TV .... PANASONIC.
burn in hell prima scammers .

For those of you who still leave replies asking if the problems with their Prima TV can be fixed there is a solution. Unplug it & walk it to the curb. Leave it there & go back inside. Then go buy a new 'name brand' tv.

I was given my Priva TV by a friend who bought a new set, so I should not complain. It worked fine until today. I thought the problem was my remote so I bought new batteries, Then I called my cable company who told me to contact Prima, whose number I cannot find. Now I am reading all these negative comments. I gave my old-but-working TV away. I guess I had better invest in a new set. Keep the economy going - right?

Hey, seems like a lot of frustration at Prima. Probably a good idea to send some towards Sears. I had an issue with my Plymouth car back in the 80s, found the best way to get the dealership to deal with it was to go in and "loudly" ask what they are going to do about the shoddy product they sell. Don't be rude or swear, just make sure other customers hear you when they are looking at the products. Or quietly tell other customers in the store about your experience. Sears needs to take some responsibility for the product as well. Maybe they can get the message to Prima by stopping carrying the product.

Does anyone know what the remote code is for a Cineplus Prima LCD TV?

jack
November 16, 2011 / 18:36

Last winter my Prima LC-32U16 arrived at the end of my walkway where the sidewalk plow had deposited it.
I could only guess that one of my neigbours had put it out for garbage collection.
Here in Ottawa, electronics are not picked up as regular garbage, so I put the thing in my garage with intentions of bringing it to an electronics recyler in the spring, but forgot to bring it when the time came.
Last weekend I came across it in the garage & plugged it in for fun...got an active screen for a few minutes & laughed.
I had a local fellow that I found on Kijiji repair it by replacing 4 or 6 capacitors & it's now working, but there's no telling how long it will last or if it will end up burning my house down!
Repair cost was $130 cash, most of which was labour.
I'd like to get the base stand if someone is junking theirs though... the plow driver forgot to deliver that part!!!
The agony that others have gone through because of these poorly designed & obviously dangerous devices is absolutely apalling and retailers that carried those products for several years such as Sears, Future Shop, Best Buy,etc., should be ashamed, if not legally liable.
Perhaps we have to ammend our electrical code to compensate for this kind of junk as was done a few years back ... arc-fault protction for bedroom circuits...lol.
Better to just get some proper Federal regulation on the safety of imported electronics.

My experience with my 42" LCD Prima has been better(sofar).I got it from a friend who said the place he worked at got hit by lightning and 8 of these went dead.He pulled them from a dumpster.

He gave me one and I popped the back off. While I'm not an electronic technician by any means,I can tell when a capacitor is bulging.I swapped out 3 capacitors at a cost of $13.50.And this tv has been great ever since.

Not to put down anyone elses experiences. And maybe I've been lucky sofar. But this has been a good set for me up to this moment.

I have a 27" that was manufactured in June of 2005, so I likely bought it within a year of that date (can't remember exactly when). It gets a lot of daily use, and so far it has been perfect. No dead pixels (unlike some big-brand PC monitors), no backlights burned out, no audio problems, nothing. These products have an industry-accepted "failure rate" of whatever percent, just like the dead pixel thing. 5 or less dead/funked-up pixels out of the 2,000,000-plus that make up the screen is considered "perfect" and is not a warranty issue.
I'm ready to make the move up to a 120hz set and moving my Prima over to the desk to begin a new life as a PC monitor, but after reading these comments, I likely won't flip a coin on another Prima. I must have got lucky with this one.

I have gone through this phase. Firstly, you shouldn’t have bought a TV from Sears. And secondly, who buys a Prima TV?

I bought a 47" HDLCD Prima TV and it is running well with daily usage for over eight years. Mind you I had to address some minor issues back in April 2011.
Hope to see more years of good usage.
