My Prima Television Nightmare

Published January 14, 2007 @ 13:26 in Mixed

angryIn January 2006, I bought a 27 inch Prima television from Sears for my basement. I didn't need anything great, just something I could watch games on while hanging in the basement or working on the computer. The price was right and for eleven months all was well.

Last month, the video on this tv stopped working. I turned it on one day and all I got was audio. I performed some trouble shooting of my own, making sure it wasn't a setting or the VCR, and quickly determined she was busted. Luckily for me she broke during her first year which meant she was covered by the manufacturer warranty. I called Sears, let them know the situation, and they told me to call Prima.

I've been trying to contact Prima ever since. Their website says you have to call a toll-free number but when you call the toll-free number you're put in a queue for fifteen minutes until you're dumped in a voice mail box. Then, the recording tells you the voice mail box is full and you're hung up on. There is no way to reach a human being by calling Prima, I've tried it dozens of times.

I've been without a television in my basement for almost a month now. I'm now trying to get Sears to intervene because I can actually talk to a human over there. For a while Sears wouldn't do anything more than tell me I had to talk to Prima, but after a well composed email of frustration they claim they're looking into this.

Does anyone out there have an old tv sitting in storage collecting dust that they're willing to donate to this poor bastard?

Actually I have a spare 19" sitting collecting dust in the basement.
We have had the same response from Sears regarding our dryer & called a local service co. to fix it. It cost $50.00 & was well worth it. Sears kept giving us numbers to call & the numbers they gave us were no longer in business or gave us other numbers to call.
Do you want the tv or not - its free.

I have an old (10 years) sanyo gathering dust and mosquito eggs in the corner of the spare room. My uncle gifted it to me when I moved from Thrikkakara to the flat in Kacheripady. He already has a year old one and a brand new huge Sony. So he said, y don;t u take it and exchange it for something newer. I rarely watch tv nowadays so, if u want it and are willing to pay the shipping & handling from Cochin to Toronto..it;s yours. LOL!

Update: I finally got someone at Prima to answer the call. The TV is with a local repair shop, where it's been for the past three weeks.

It's May 3 and this hasn't been resolved. That local repair shop couldn't fix it, but Prima has finally agreed to replace it.

Tonight I'll pick up the broken TV and on Saturday I should be able to swap it at Sears.

It's been over five months, but the end it near.

I understand the frusstration I have had the same problem trying to comtact someone at Prima. I feel like the phone number antd the email is all fraudulent. I've tried pulling up information on the internet and that doesn't work either. The television product number doesn't even show up anywher and akk I wand is a remote. The universal remotes don't work so I'm extremely puzzled as to what the problem is. I've gone the Brandsmart where I purchased the set and I was told the same thing to call the store but you don't talk to anyone you leave messages and no one calls you back. I,m beginning to wonder if they have taken the guts from other set and put a Prima frame on them. I don't know what else to think. However I feel your pain.

Toronto Mike
June 26, 2007 / 08:51

Eventually, Prima agreed to replace the set. I told Sears about my issues with Prima and they suggested I use that credit toward another brand. For another $9, I got myself a Hitatchi.

I'll never go Prima again.

I am having the same no picture audio problems with my Prima TV,(and I have no warrenty) does anyone have any idea what the problem is my tv is 13 months old

July 6, 2007 / 20:06

My Prima also failed just after 13 months. Surprisingly, I received a response almost immediately after a nasty email. Their solution was to sell me a new set at a discounted price(which wasn't so discounted). It's a discount in comparison to my original purchase price but the offered price was just todays current market price. I will never purchase another Prima product. You should hear the nasty things the repair shop had to say about Prima.

Wow. I can't believe what I am reading here. I bought a 30" Prima in November of 2005. One day this past week, I came home to find that I had no picture...only audio. Unfortunately for me, my set is no longer under warranty. I called the warranty number and was basically told "tough sh@t". When I first got the set I noticed that alot of time the picture was a bit wavy. Not too long ago I also noticed that the picture was not perfectly straight. No big deal, I figured I got what I paid for. But to have the picture go completely out in less than 2 years is unacceptable. I too, will never buy anything else made by Prima. What the hell is up with this audio only crap???

I bought a Prima TV Dec '06 from Best Buy. I moved it and plugged it into a new outlet and - nothing - nadda - zippo - no picture - no audio. I went back to Best Buy and their response was "Pack it up and send it to the manufacturer. Maybe they'll help you". I have the receipt for the TV but not the warantee card. Any idea where I find these guys?

I bought a Prima Tv couple of years ago.The price was right and I also bought the in House warranty. My Prima Tv has now been sitting on my Floor waiting to be fixed. The TV tech guy comes over takes a look and said the setting module is gone and have to order it from China. That is fine and dandy it took 6 weeks for the part to come in and the tech guy comes back to put it in and says tv still not working properly. So I keep calling the repair shop and asking when my tv is going to get fixed and he says i'm emailing this company in China but not getting a response. So i'm sitting in my apartment with no tv going on 3 1/2 months and now i'm getting sick and tired of all this CRAP over this TV with warranty. All they have to say that the tv is fixable or it is not and give me a new tv.There shouldn't be a problem at all. Thanks

Bought 27" tv in June 2007 from Sears. It would not turn on in Jan 2008.Sears was not helpful in any way. Now its Aug and still no results, waiting for a reply from Prima. BBB could not help unless there is an address for the company which I can't find.

If you're past the one year manufacturers warranty, you're pretty much SOL. Prima won't replace it and Sears will tell you to talk to Prima.

We bought a 42" prima plasma in november of 05 at the time the ratings were in the OK range when we did some on line research only to have been bruned 18 months later when the board went on it. We called Prima and where told it could be fixed and they referred us to a local service rep. We were told it could not be fixed and when we went back to pick up the TV there was an identical unit there with the same problem. I think it is terrible when you buy a product and have no recourse on an obviously defective product unless you dished out and addtional $500 for a service plan, and even then it probably would not be covered.

Daryl
October 21, 2007 / 20:04

Count me in as a burned Prima customer. Our 42 Plasma has a bunch of horizontal lines on it (not burn it but scrambled signals) 15months after purchase for FS. Brought it to their service depot and it sat there for a month where they couldn not get parts.
Its a paper weight now.
The cost has come down from 1800 to 1000 now .. but still $1000 over priced.

My girlfriend just bought a 32" Prima LCD. I was suspicious not being familiar with the brand, but we got it anyway due to the attractive price. Thanks to these reviews it's going back to Bestbuy. I hope somebody from Prima reads this page. It's pathetic.

I have a 32inch and i've recently started to have problems with it. The tuner on it has gone, and there is some horrible botching on some spots, looks like burn in but "LCD Burn IN" is not supposed to be permanent. But its been there almost a year. The one year warranty has past, but luckily i purchased with credit card who doubles the warranty. They have asked me to get it repaired and they will cover it. Hoping all goes well.

Mike
November 2, 2007 / 17:42

I have a liquidation company and we have at least 5 Prima LCDs come in weekly with all kinds of trouble, they will not honor their warranty for us at all. Another real joke is Sony Cyber-shots camera's 15-20 per week, garbage. All these products are new returns from big companies

November 5, 2007 / 16:22

So I bought a 47" Prima, same issue, only audio no video. I contacted Future Shop about upgrading the tv, since my warrantty's up in Feb and they've agreed to assist me in upgrading it. I've been waiting on Prima for an answer for 3 weeks now. Future shop has a 90 day part delay warr where they will replace it if not repaired within 90 days.
My only advise-NEVER BUY PRIMA! And thank goodness I bought that ext warr!

Well folks it is not just TV's had a DVD player go south within 30 days of purchase. Sears replaced and 5 months later it went south again. Prima does not answer e-mails or phone calls.
Sears finally replaced it and told me they were giving one year over the counter replacement for all Prima products.

If you look at the other products that this company is carrying the warranty for I would suggest everybody avoid all of them.

All of you have a great Prima free Christmas.

Bought a 27" Prima at best buy. Had it a couple of weeks. Woke up to flames shooting out the back of the TV. Good thing I woke up. I even wrote to Prima and have not had reply ...of course. Very sad ...was really bummed out and was not going to ever have another TV in my bedroom. I have since tried this once more and thought I would try a Digistar....which is now giving me trouble...and guess what I found out....they are part of the parent company that ownes Prima.... go figure.

I was going to buy tomorrow a 42 Prima being sold below $1000 but with these negative comments, I am thinking of staying away, but in all fairness, it appears the same goes with others, specially with SONY the world's worst warranty. Advise stay away from Sony laptops and their warranty is worthless.

All those store who sell that product "Sears-Futurshop-Best Buy" all a bunch of crook.

For anyone willing to buy a new LCD TV set: avoid Prima brands. Try to pay a little more because it is worth it. My hope is that sooner or later we will not see this brand in our stores. Reading all these messages I realized how stupid I was to buy a Prima LCD.

Hi: I understand your frustrations as consumers. I've had a prima 21" set in my shop for almost two years. When you plug it in, it stays on with no picture or sound. HELP ANYONE!!!!!!!!

Wow, We have a Prima LV150B02X and have the same problem with sound but no picture. Our warranty has just expired and we are trying to discuss the issue with Future Shop and Prima. I contacted PRIMA at 1-866-447-7462 and was able to speak with a customer service representaive who gave me a contact email. I emailed the contact (Vic) twice and have not gotten a response back. I also called the number again and left a message. Still no response. Our TV was also repaired (or so they say) twice before this. I would definitely never purchase a PRIMA product and I am hoping that word will get around about the unreliability of thier products and very poor customer service. Stay away from PRIMA.

Add our family to the long trail of people who will never buy a prima product again....a couple of years ago both my mother and my brother bought 27 inch prima tv's at about the sane tine.....both went south about the same time too about 2 months after the warranty went out on them.

Both had the same issue where they just turned on the TV one day and what did they get! Zilch, nadda, nothing.....no video no audio no nothing.....

Is that something that can be fixed? Or will we just have really nice fancy paper weights?

Wow!! .. I was so ticked off when the picture on our 42" Prima TV went that I immediately went and "googled" Prima and the first thing I find is this web site. I don't feel alone! Our set is just over a year old. After reading the above comments I phoned Future Shop in Chilliwack, BC to see what they can/will do. "Can't help us - warranty has expired", was the response. The set is now in the repair shop awaiting an estimate to fix it. The repairman has had a few Prima sets come in and said it could be up to 3 months for parts. It is interesting to note that Future Shop doesn't sell Prima TV's anymore. Wonder why!? I'll wait to hear from the repairman as to what exactly is wrong with the set before I "go to war" with Future Shop. They should stand behind products they sell! Prima will also be hearing from me. I hope everyone that has posted problems with these TV's keep us all posted about any feedback from Prima.

It's sad to hear about all these problems with Prima TV. I used to repair TV before i decided to move into computers. A friend of mine brought his Prima to me and it has no video but sound. In most cases it is the inverter which powers up the light tubes in the back that makes the picture visible. I opened the damn thing and disconnected the inverter, powered up the TV and put in a DVD, then brought a flourescent at the back of the unit and was able to see the picture. I tried calling Prima and guess what? No human beings work there... No response ...Well all i am offering here is a little hope for all the poor souls who bought this brand. In my research online I came across this website that sells the inverter for $179.99. You can do it yourself if you get hold of this inverter. I have not done it for my friend yet so i am not sure about the aunthenticity of that website, but it seems they specialize on inverters only and they even have cross matching inverters that will work with Prima. Email and i will send you the web site. Good luck and hope you get to repair your sets that you paid for and you should rightly be enjoying.

I have a Prima 34" widescreen CRT television (200lbs of old, supposedly reliable technology). When it was 6 months old, it burnt out it's high voltage converter. We managed to get through to Prima and have it fixed. 3 months later, the same symptoms were back (nasty electical burning smell bad enough to make your eyes water). The last time I spoke to Bradley at Prima (last name Schmitt, I believe), he promised me a replacement TV if I faxed in my bill. I did, and two months later I have not heard from him. I just finished talking to Prima customer service yet again (asked for Bradley, he is "sick" again, and his voice mail is full) and this time I threatened a class action lawsuit if they don't get it in gear. I don't hold out a lot of hope, to be honest. Does anyone know how to get a class action lawsuit started in Canada?

My son also brought a 42" Plasma TV from the Brick - in November, now it has white shadows in it. Reading your blog it sounds like they could also cause some fires with all the burnouts. I am thinking of getting a lawyer - is there one out there already working on this to add names to? The Brick does not want to replace it - the actually don't even want to talk about it unless you upgrade. What happened to customer service?

There must be something we can do here legally as a group. My Prima often has no picture just sound...nothing but horizontal lines on the screen...remote does not work and the TV will not accept any other universal remotes...I regret this purchase

Since my last post of December 10th I have had our TV set repaired to the tune of $603.84. I may live to regret this !!!! Our cheezy Prima set has 3 modules and one had burnt out. The actual repair kit was $414.37 and the rest was labour and taxes. We've had the set back 2 days and now the picture keeps blinking on and off. Back to the repairs shop on Monday !! My husband is barely surviving this... he is reduced to a 13" for the time being, and keeps complaining that he can't see the hockey puck when he is watching his beloved hockey games.

I still haven't had a response from Prima. I sure like the idea of a class action suit against Prima. Hopefully someone can lead us in the right direction - count me in!!

My son bought a Prima from sears and he kept it in his bedroom, beautiful picture, then one night he was walking by the tv and went to change the channel and got a shock, then the tv would not let you change channels lost the sound. He was going to throw it away but I talked him into giving it to me, because it still had a beautiful picture. I call a tech from Prima and he gave me the name of the only place here that fixes that brand. Well I put the TV at there place in Aug. of this year and still have not gotten it back, just talked to the pepole and they said the manufacture has not responded to there phone calls or e-mails for the part I want to know if they can be sued??

my son purchased a Prima from Sears for his bedroom. Had a beautiful picture, was walking by it one night decided to change the channel, got a shock, then you couldn't change the channel,he was going to through it away and I told him I wanted it, it still had sound and a beautiful picture then when I got it home the sound wnet out. So I called Sears and then didn't know how to get in touch with the manufacturer. I finally found there number from the back of TV. They gave me the name of this couple that would repair it they have had my TV since Aug of this year. Just talked to them again and they said manufacture has not responed to phone calls or e-mails in regards to the part, they need. I sure would like to sue this company.

Great; Just bought a prima 26in HD LCD and you cant see a clear pic if it is wall mounted. Purchased at Brick dec22 they tell me i bought a tv with old technology (huh!)ok i said i am bringing it back.Looking forward to a fight after reading your blog.Think Prima is using out dated video modules and installing the crap to unload it. Oh yeah a representative of the brick said you get what you pay for so i guess i will never buy anything on sale again.

I checked out the B.C. BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU website re: Prima TV. This a quote from there: "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB due to failure to respond to one or more complaints and or two or more otherwise unresolved complaints. However the business has resolved some complaints presented to the bureau." Thre is more to read - check it out

Also, they are not registered with the BBB.

I still haven't heard anything back from Prima reps.

My father recently purchased a Prima 20" combo unit and while flipping thru the otherwise well-presented owner's manual I noticed that the warranty pages in all three language sections had been removed! I was able to find service/warranty info printed on the barcode stickers on the box. It turns out that service/warranty is not provided by Prima Inc. but rather by PWW or Prima WorldWide Warranty Services. Their website, where you can register your Prima product and find out some other useful info is www.pwwservice.com.
Check out their FAQ where they list a rather simplistic fix for all your No Video and/or No Audio problems with your Plasma/LCD TVs. :-) And they also offer renewable extended warranties (I was quite surprised to see how steep the cost is for the big screens). If you are out of Warranty at least find out from them who are all the Authorized Service Stores in your area. At least one of them might have the part you need.

And finally, note that Prima Inc. doesn't actually manufacture these TVs. They are made by a company in China which also makes the very similar models for such brands as Advent, Audiovox, Polaroid and others. Check out walmart.com's website for the reviews of Polaroid LCD big screen TVs. 50% like them because of nice picture, 50% hate them because of problems.

My holiday gift to you all. :-)

Another wonderful Prima story. I purchased a 27" Prima this past summer and the DVD player would freeze half-way through a movie. I sent it away for repair November 7 and as of today the parts are still not in. It's been close to two months and I get the same response each time. "we're waiting for the part. You would think in this high tech age a part could be sent in a resonable amount of time. In two months I probably could have walked to the manufacture and picked the part up myself.

Just as JT said what happened to him on November 23rd /07.
The very same thing happened to me a month later.

Please let me know ASAP....It will cost you verry little to join...JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED ! !
I am out for blod = $$ for damages etc....

Send me an email if you have any questions...

Sincerely,

January 2, 2008 / 23:08

Finally a response, however not from Prima. After nearly two months of "the parts are not in" from the repair shop I decided to contact the Brick regarding my built in DVD player freezing half-way through a movie. With in two days I received a response from customer service from the Brick. This was then followed up with a phone call from one of the customer service reps. asking for more details. They contacted the repair shop and received details from them as well. I was told that if the repair is longer than 30 days I should have received a repacement TV. This has been the best response to date, however I'm stll holding my breath to see if anything actually happens. If any of you purchaced your wonderful Prima from The Brick I would suggest going on to their web site under customer service and post your comments.
Will respond when I find out more. The saga continues....

I have a Prima LC23Y25. I too have had the same crap. Futureshop won't help me because I didn't get the extended service plan. I took it to the local repair shop and it sat there for 3 months while they waited for a part. It never came. Basically we all have the same problem No picture. Either weird white lines or horizontal blocks of light. Pretty expensive radio if you ask me. I guess it would make a good boat anchor as well. I think I am going to take a sledge hammer to it and post it on youtube, what a piece of crap. I didn't know they were made in China. I hate Prima, and Futureshop. Buyer BEWARE. Run away from Prima as fast as you can!

Jesus, I came on the web just hoping to find some trouble shooting for my Prima TV, which as you guessed it, is broken. My problem is a little bit different as I can't even turn it on at all. The standby light doesnt even light up. I will see what my warrenty covers, but its still a piss off as when I bought it 2 years ago i ended up paying almost 1600 bucks for a 32 inch TV. Sigh, I just don't have the time or the effort to put into trying to get this fixed, I can foresee me eating that intire cost, and buying a new one, cause honestly who can go Months without a functioning TV.

January 10, 2008 / 10:32

I have the same issue.. I bought a Prima 42" Plasma. Just over 2 years, no video, just audio. Warranty expired. I brought it to a tv repair shop, they looked at it and said it was the power supply inside. He said, good thing components inside are Samsung. Easier to deal with. New part, including labour, $400 and it's fixed. It's better then buying a new one and lets hope it'll last another 2 years before I have to buy a new one. In general, no more PRIMA for me, rather spend the extra money on a good brand name and ALWAYS get the extra warranty.. it's worth it and peace of mind.

For anybody in Montreal, drop me an email if you want to name of the repair shop as they deliver great service. I even got a rental tv for the meantime, so I could watch tv at home at least.

Thanks you all for the very helpful inputs.
I was meant to buy one at Sears (they actually have very good price for a 32"), but from all the problems you guys have, it isn't worth it. From your assessment, I found Sears at least is more approachable and helpful than Best Buy.

Its really sad to see all the comments about broken tvs .. especially since it looks like I'm just another statistic. Ironically, before I knew how incredibly lucky I was, I talked extensively to human beings at Prima and they gave me the number to their repair place. I called the repair place within the required 48 hours and the repair place said that Prima hadn't sent the papers and hadn't paid them for work done in the past 6 months. They kindly agreed to do the work if I just got the authorization number. I am now having an incredibly hard time getting a hold of someone in Prima!!! Its so frustrating, especially since its the only tv I have in the house.
My next step, I think is to harass the company to death through email and voicemail messages. I would be completely on the bandwagon for some legal activity if this continues.

I received a Prima 32" LCD three months ago from a friend who won it in a contest. He also won a 'refurbished' surround sound which he kept. I went to turn it on this morning and nothing. Blank~ Checked multiple outlets and still nothing. I was looking for a site that would help with trouble shooting and found this site. Boy am I glad I received it as a gift, I should have asked for the 'refurbished' surround instead! It is working just fine...I'm sorry to see so many people who have actually payed for one of these, frankly, I've never known a TV to stop working in my life!

Hey, just came across this site. I just bought a Prima 30" about a month ago from Sears. It was reduced to a great price, now I am wondering if mine will go the way of all the other posts I read here. I have the one year warranty as well and have not taken the extended one yet. Guess I better rethink that choice. Knock on wook no problems yet, but I gotta say I am more than a bit concerned. I bought mine at a Sears clearance center and as far as I know their sales are final. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks to this feedback I decided to return my 6 day old 32" Prima back to the Brick. After much arguing & escalating, (to Mgt. & Executives), I managed to get the Brick to take back this future paper weight, (& exchange it for a more reliable Brand). Wasn't overly worried about the 'paper weight syndrome", however, the fear of fire, (when one has 4 children in the house)...isn't something I was prepared to accept! I strongly encourage everyone to complain in person & talk to someone at the your retail outlet that is in a position to make decisions & cares about future client business.

Guys, I used to work for Prima's call centre so I know exactly what you are going through. There is one call centre for all Prima/Polaroid Tv (US Only) customers. It is located in Richmond, British Columbia and they have a total of about 8 call takers. I was a part of that 8 and I would hear calls from frustrated people like u all day long and was basically told to sluff everyone off. Prima is a multi-million dollar company and they have one location with about 40 employees alright? 5 people work in the warehouse where all the parts are shipped to repair centres. 5 People! For all of North America! Needless to say, from my experience, I would NEVER buy a Prima product because I know exactly what happens in the long run. I eventually left the company because I couldn't take lying to the same people every single day. I would be forced to tell someone something one day, only to have them call me back a few weeks later with no results and have to explain myself. Trust me, DO NOT buy a Prima product!

I am another victim to the Prima scam. 1 month after warranty ran out, I lost my video. I took it to the repair shop and they did a factory reset. 2 months later the same problem again. Luckily Mastercard doubles the factory warranty. What a scam Prima has going here.

Well, I wish I new this a long time ago, but hindsight is always 20/20. Yes, I have wait had a 32" that is now a paper weight. Same thing, sound but no picture. We bought it from Sears and are not impressed with there lack of help. I believe that the company that manufactures Prima should be held accountable and so the companies that sell them. I am sure that by now they all know of the problems and the fact that no one is being held accountable really ticks me off.

I believe that all who have anything to do with Prima (manufacturer and suppliers) should be boycotted. I'm in for a lawsuit just to make someone accountable. As for me I will NEVER BY PRIMA or anything affiliated with it.

Sister got a 34" CRT Prima from Sears, it died, Sears has had it in the shop for close to 8 weeks and the part is still on order. Seems to me that the class action law suit should be against the sellers and let them go after Prima. If Prima won't respond to customers, maybe they will respond to the retailers if they sued. Just a thought. Yeah good site you got here, it will help others stay away from this crappie Brand.

My prima lasted 2 yrs. Didn't know how lucky I was until I got on to this site. Problem was that pcture finally went. Bought it at Sears and none of the people I talked to at Sears recently ever heard of Prima. Local repair shop feels they can fix it for $85. (new capacitor if they can locate it) Would I be throwing good money after bad?

Jeff
February 20, 2008 / 17:01

Bought a Prima 37" LCD from Future Shop. The LCD lasted 15 months then turns on but no picture and no sound. Don't really care that its not on warranty anymore as a bigger replacement (probably also crap) can be had for around half of original cost. Ext warranty, why bother! I didn't get it and will now go to WallyMart a get a 42" LCD (1920x1080 native) for 898.00 Screw the extended warranty, if it dies within the year great. If it dies after the first year then its still less $75 a month to own and gets cheaper each month that it last before it dies. BTW Prima Sucks. A friend of mine bought one (exact same model) and it crapped out before first year warranty ran out. Luckly, the service center couldn't repair and he got credit towards another one.

Bought Prima television from Best Buy worked well enough in the downstairs for a couple months, sound was never great but I could live with it after all I only paid $500. Four months later and the TV no longer has a picture Best Buy tells me to call Prima, got a hold of a person finally and was told to take it to a tech in the area, where it has been ever since, that was over a year ago and still all I receive are empty promises of replacement from the operators who put me through to their supervisors when asked to answer when a replacement will be sent. To this day it still remains at the tech shop "being repaired".

Oh my god!! same problem as everyone else....no screen and weird sound out of the audio. I was looking for trouble shooting and found this blog!! Spent $2000 on my 47' prima at Visions in Surrey 14 month ago and regreting that dicision the more I read. Has anyone had there prima repaired to satisfaction or do I right this off as a learning expirence and just go by a new TV??? As for a lawsuit...I'm in.

March 1, 2008 / 19:37

I've had my prima for about two years.
my 32 lcd has been acting weird for a while now. on the left side of the screen to the edge there is a a shading to the screen. from time to time there is no picture at all when turning on the tv, sometimes it wont respond to remote commands at all, sometimes there is a black screen in "front" of the tv station (which sometimes has what seems to be random lettering).
all these problems are solved(aside from shading on left side of screen) by unplugging the unit and re-plugging it.
I am curious to see how long this thing will last.
oh yeah, the VGA input hasnt worked for the last 6 months.
I WILL NEVER BUY PRIMA AGAIN.

Well I am glad there are more people out there with this problem. We bought a Prima Plasma HDTV 42" and just today just one month after the one year warrenty was up I was watching a tv movie and it flashed a red fuzz kind of like white snow but red erased the picture and all I could see was the red and then nothing, the picture disapeared but I could still hear the movie. then about a few mins. later I started smelling this awful burning plastic smell which was comming from the TV. I quickly unplugged it and I called Best Buy which is where we bought the TV and they said we could bring it in and they would send it away for $300 but that is to JUST send it away. If there is a lawsuit for the Tv's Let me know because I think they should know by now that their TVs are burning out. Even the business places like Best Buy and Future S. know what they are selling us. For Sure :(

I bouhgt a 32 inch Prima tv from Future shop nearly 4 years ago. After reading all these testimonials I feel lucky it worked this long. Last night it made a bunch of cracking noises and completely died out. the power button turns it on but there's huge electical arching inside and it won't turn off. Had to pull the plug b4 it burned my house down.I think I'll cut my losses and ditch this thing. I don't think I want to go through the hell everyone here is talking about getting it fixed if It's just going to be a piece of crap and break down again or worse yet bun down my house.
Brand names from now on for me.

I am also a victim of Prima World Wide Warranty. I know all of their phone numbers by heart, even know Vic's (the supposed cust, serv. mgr) extension number. It has been 13 months and 132 phone calls and my 42" LCD TV is still in need of repair. What is up with this place? Since I am in Florida, it is difficult to persue, but I will and I am not going to go away! Unreal, here we pay 2500 bucks for a tv and it lasted 10 months and now PWW wants nothing to do with me! So, Vic in Cust. Serv. or Gary in Marketing, please call Beth in Florida!!!!

Anyone have any problems with their Prima Plasma turning back on after you've turned it off? We also have the black screen with sound when changing channels!

March 17, 2008 / 23:58

We have the same problem, 42 inch plasma from prima and had it about a year and a half or so, playing a video game and the screen just went blank, started slightly smoking and smelled like burning wires...still have sound though, lol. i guess from reading the previous posts we have an extremely overpriced paperwieght. we knew it wouldnt last forever, but expected more than a year out of it :( we plan on talking to a repair shop in the morning, but i am assuming they will be no help (from what i have learned here). i want to phone prima, however by the info i found here not really wanting to waste my time talking to a machine over and over. NEVER buying prima again. :(

March 20, 2008 / 12:28

I don't have quite teh same problem as everyone here, my tv works fine and I've had it for 10 months now, but the biggest problem with my tv is the fact there's a fracking missing vertical line on the right side of my tv, which detracts so much when watching anything. I have no idea what to do about it, but if anyone knows, please just email me. I know there's pretty good chance I can't do anything about it, but this is really bullcrap, anyways, I'll never purchase a Prima again. It's a nice gateway HDTV, on account it got me to see the potential of high def, but it's not worth the money.

They got me too. Bought a 40" Prima Ultra LCD TV from TigerDirect 2 yrs. ago. I got the extended warranty with it. The warranty ran out on Sunday March 2, 08. On Monday March 3rd I came to my man room only to find it smelling like burnt plastic. I figured out that the power inverter blew. So for the last 23 days I've been trying to get some justice to no avail. And I live in Maryland. What's up with the class action suit? I'm definitely in!!

Thank you VERY much for your comments, people.
I'm a single dad with two little boys. I was about to buy a 42" Prima Plasma that's on sale at 'The Brick' as a treat for the three of us.
Now I won't bother. Not only do I have little money to spare, the fire hazard issue is terrifying.

I'm saddened that so many of you have wasted money and had real nightmares over this horrible company. If it's any consolation, know that the stories you post here REALLY ARE DOING GOOD.

Good luck to all who decided to sue these bozos.

I have a Prima 42" HDMI and so far so good (knock on wood).
The only issue I have is the volume of the TV itself. I have to turn it all the way up to get any sound from it. Playing my XBOX 360 on it I have to sit inches away from it to hear anything and I still can't here anything that great. Any ideas on why this is?

Being on a fixed income, I was really considering buying the PRIMA 20" TV. This month, Sears Catalog has reduced the price from $129.99 to $99.99. "HMMM" , I guess when you sell junk and get nothing but complaints from customers, you have to clear out your warehouse as fast as possible. Thank you for this website, you've enlightened a lot of potenial buyers out there and "NO", I will never buy a PRIMA product now or in the future.

I have my 37 inch LCD mounted on the wall and I went to turn it, got a huge shock, and the picture went on it. Still have the audio though! Like someone said, an expensive radio. I unplugged my tv, and I can turn it back on but it only stays on for no more than 15-20 seconds at a time. Now if I can just find a way to play my Xbox and turn on the power every 15-20 seconds I'll be set and won't need a new TV. I am also without a warranty as I have had the TV for 15 months. If there's a lawsuite, let me know.

I'm trying to find the specs on my 32" Prima. Had it less than 30 days, and feel after reading, I need to return it before the warranty is up. If nothing is wrong with it, I will still return it and say it is broken. Thanks for the comments.
Also, If this is made by RCA, it is Sh^t. RCA is made by Thompson Electronics, who is really bad about customer service. Past experience on a 37" CRT model was unfixable because parts are no longer manufactured. The TV was made in 1994. Funny how the old consoles still work and are still being sold in classified ads... Greedy Bastages... Don't make me come and see you in person, you won't like it. I know Best Buy won't like me when I return this LC-3237P.
Again, Thank you to all who have contributed to this discussion and sorry to hear about all who got ripped-off!

The comment above by Raja was made by the same IP address (Fraser Valley Regional Library) that sent me two messages earlier today - except the messages earlier today were from Prima telling me why Prima is the best.

Raja, you're going to have to be smarter than this. Everything I wrote on January 14, 2007 @ 13:26 was true and there are 157 comments that support what I wrote about your product. The product is inferior and the support abhorrent.

Hi Mike, I see you can't get through to anyone at Prima, I bought a 32 inch Prima in Dec 2006 from Leons, it stopped working just over a year into having it, video went and sound was starting to go, i too was on hold for a long long time,I didn't get through, just like you Leons had to look into it for me because i had no luck, and it took about a month. and they said our TV could not be fixed so leons is giving us a 40 inch samsung! no more primas! good luck!, so hopefully you get a new TV not a prima!

April 8, 2008 / 12:26

I just posted but i was reading more responses, wow I can't beleive the crap Prima and all the stores are putting you all though. I guess I was lucky, Prima actually contacted me a few times to tell me the tv cant be fixed, and if anyone who has no picture and sound the tv is not fixable, i spoke to Prima april 7 2008, go to
the retailer if it is in warrenty and they will get you a new TV.

Toronto Mike
April 8, 2008 / 12:41

You get the 12 month warranty, but it sounds like many people have their televisions stop working at 13, 14 or 15 months.

When you buy a television, you expect it to work longer than 15 months. My 27 inch Sony Trinitron has been working fine for 7 years now... my Prima didn't make it a year.

Erin Brooks
April 8, 2008 / 15:20

We were lucky our Prima came witha two year warrenty. with our new TV we bought three year warrenty plus a year of what was left from ther prima comes with that. good luck to all.

I purchased a Prima 27" from Visions in September '07 and it was only used once or twice a week at the time. I've since moved and it's going almost every day in the new place. The only trouble I had with it was coloured lines on the screen and no audio a couple of times, so I unplugged it, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it in again and it seemed to work fine from then on both times. I also bought the extended 1 year warranty and Visions told me that if there were no problems with it after a year, they would return my extended warranty in cash. Reading these comments, it looks like I'm going to have some potential problems, but so far I've been lucky. The lines thing only happened twice. The comments about arcing and fire hazards has me a little concerned!!!

Just took my Prima in for service (2nd time in 3 months) to get a "Factory Reset" done which fixes the TV for a couple months. At $20 a pop hardly worth it. The repair centre told me that Prima owes them money for fixing these pieces of garbage. They won't pay their warranty bills where they have authorized the depot to fix. Big surprise from a Company like this!

We're in the same boat as everyone else here. We've had our 42" Prima Plasma TV for 3 years now (this month actually -- bought from FS -- no warranty) and just today while watching TV it went out. We tried different inputs, turning it off and back on and then looked it up online and came to this site. Looks like we're up shits creek ... paddleless.

I tried for months and got the same thing. If you got an answer on the phone you were sent ot a FULL MAIL BOX AND WERE NEVER CALLED BACKED BECAUSE YOU COULD NOT LEAVE A NUMBER! AFTER MONTHS OF TRYING I GOT SOMEONE ON THE PHONE AND INSTANTAINTLY I WAs sent back to the full mail box! Imagine that! all complaints were sent to the same mail box so dont even try .I finally talked with with some one and they wanted to replace the tv for as much as I paid for it! They did not want to send the "cheap reair parts to fix it and now the repair shop I paid wont even touch it!!!!!

Hi. I just bought a 42" Prima plasma tv from "ML". They are not a big chain but usually reliable. After reading all this I am very scared. I did get the 2 years extended warranty which states they will replace it if it breaks (with a better model). I do not know what to do? Part of me wants to print this page out a let the ML read it. Another part of me wants to wait and see if it breaks within the two years so I get something better. I am a University grad and bought this as a reward for myself for graduating this semester and could not afford much more. ANY advice?

Toronto Mike
April 19, 2008 / 08:30

Shaun, here's some sage advice. If you can return your Prima and cough up a little more coin for a television from a different manufacturer, do it.

Although your tv will likely conk out at the 12-13 month mark, it's not worth the hassle and with your luck it will probably quit at the 24.5 month mark.

Purchased a 32 " LCD Prima LC-32U16 back in Aug 08 from Future Shop. Had problems a few months later and got nowhere with Future Shop and then tried for several weeks to get hold of someone at Prima......... when our TV gets warm or hot the black colour turns to green...... so in the summer we can only watch it for a short period of time before it goes green! We had the problem while it was under warranty but couldn't get anyone (lost count of the phone calls and the emails) and now it is out of warranty I know we are stuck. DO NOT BUY A PRIMA PRODUCT.

I have been fighting with this company since the month after I bought my 30 inch wide screen HDTV in Dec. 21, 2005 I just filed a complaint with the Oregon Attorney Generals office...DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FRON THIS COMPANY! this was my complaint

I bought a tv from the Sears located at 1260 Lloyd Center Portland Oregon, After getting it home and out of the box, I noticed it had some damage to the speaker, I called Sears and told them the issue and they told me to take a picture of the damage and bring it in to show them, I did and all they wanted to do was give me $50.00 back on my purchase, Well a month after that I began to have problems with the TV when I would turn it on all I would get was a blue screen and no sound, I contacted Sears because it was still under warranty, They told me to contact Prima electronics the maker of the tv, which I tried to reach for months before finally getting a hold of them. They sent out a repair man on 8/01/06. But because the problem only happened once in a while he said he wouldnt be able to determine the problem with it and never even took the back off the tv to have a look. It was never fixed. Now the tv wont work at all. All I get is a blue screen all the time and no sound. I have contacted Sears and Prima, the company that made tv many times over the course of 2 years. In that time I was put into voice mail after voice mail, with no-one contacting me back. After finally getting a hold of someone, they would say we will get back to you before the end of the business day, but never did. Now they have informed me that since the warranty is now expired they wouldnt do anything for me. Well, they didnt fix the problem to begin with. So I then called Sears back, informing them of my problem. They told me if I would have told them about the problem within 30 days they would have been able to exchange it. Well the fact of the matter is I did contact them. They told me to contact the maker of the tv, refusing to help me with this matter. After searching the Internet, I found that this company has been selling this garbage and giving little if any help to those who have bought their products. You can check it out at http://www.mikeboon.com/2007/01/my_prima_television_nightmare.html Sears no longer carries this tv due to these problems. Well, I feel that they should have helped me long ago when I started having problem within the 30 day customer satisfaction period. I feel the company should have fixed the tv when I first called them about these problems. I have my receipt for the tv, the warranty information and the paperwork from the service man who came out and did nothing to fix this tv. Sears offered me 10% off a new tv, but because I am on disability and only get $657.00 a month this is not an option that does me much good. Being that Sears did not honor their 30 day costumer satisfaction guarantee and the company that made this product did not honor their warranty, I was hoping you could help me get some resolution to my problem.

We are SO incredibly relieved to have come accross this site!! THANK-YOU! Yesterday we had a PRIMA Ciniplus being shipped to our home. Now, before it even arrived, we have made arrangements to have it returned to the place of purchase. Although we are very "cheesed off" about being out of pocket for the cost of shipping it here and then for the return, according to what we have read here it's the least of our worries. We are VERY sorry that everyone else involved here is dealing with what appears to be a nightmare product and an uncaring company!

Just like Cory Trevor's post above, we also got this stupid TV for free through the Brick with a bed (about 3 weeks ago now - it was when the Playoffs started, I remember that much). And just like Cory's, as of yesterday our volume is also stuck and the remote no longer works. The only button that works is the power button on the TV itself. We have satellite TV so at least we can use the Bell remote for channels etc.

I don't even know what to say really since after reading every post here it doesn't seem like it will ever get fixed or replaced....?

At any rate, just wanted to jump in and join the "Prima makes shitty TV's" club.

My hubby is going to start calling and bugging the Brick and Prima today. I'll post again and update if anything blog worthy happens...

By accident I saw all these reviews. If the Prima discussed is the type made in China, I would recommend not buying it or at least have supplier come in check if it could catch fire. On May4th, 4 days ago, the Prima TV, under standby mode, caught fire by itself at my home. Started with smoke then fire in quickly, one or two minutes. Fortunately, my family was back from vacation on May 3rd. TV and furniture were burnt.
I kept pictures and receipt / guarranty book etc. Now I am working with the Prima company for this issue. Like you said, slow and inefficient.

Same problem prima ultra 40"LCD HD TV.No picture it started with vertical stripes. We have been going back and forth with Vic at prima for 18 months. When the shop here in Las Vegas told us that they got no reply for parts from prima they returned our tv after 6 months. The repair shop owner said that they had this problem with prima all the time they never send parts and do not honnor the warranty. We are now looking for a process server in canada to serve our small claims law suit paperwork.

There are a lot of us posting here on this, imagine how many people are out there with the same problems that aren't saying anything...

I was just thinking if we all called the local TV consumer affairs guy in our respective city's/towns and they all kinda band up together to report on this maybe we will get somewhere...

Just an idea...
