Toronto Mike Needs a Phone

Published by Toronto Mike on October 13, 2011 @ 14:23 in Technology

phoneCompletely unrelated to recent Blackberry issues, I need a new phone.

I've been using a company-owned Blackberry the past 4 years, but now it's time to give that up and get my own. This will be my only phone and I'd like it to be both smart and reliable.

I'm thinking I'll end up with one of these options:

  • Another Blackberry
  • An iPhone
  • An Android device

Here's how you can help...

Please tell me which phone and provider / plan you recommend. I'm very interested in what you're paying, what you get and what you think of your mobile phone.

And, if you can give Toronto Mike a phone, I'd love to hear from you. I need one fairly quickly.

I'd recommend getting an iPhone. Less headache.

Blackberry is behind the 8 ball. It feels really outdated.

Android is OK if you want to save a few $ on a handset, but you won't get new features or have access to the same apps.

Add up the total cost of the contract and the cost of the phone $199 vs $149(ish) for an android and it doesn't compare.

my company pays for my service, so I don't have a point of reference on that.

I hate the whole IPhone culture and the finger sliding that goes with it. Pretentiousness at it's worst.

I still like BB and have a Torch which isn't too bad at all. I just switched to Koodoo (Telus) which offers Canada wide calling with no roaming or long distance charges, and have great data plans.

Get the new iPhone 4S. I have had an iPhone for a couple years now and nothing beats it. My plans is the government plan (although I don't work for the government) which costs me $43 for 250 daytime incoming, 250 daytime outgoing and unlimited evenings and weekends. It also includes 6 gigs of data on Rogers.

I ahve a BB Torch that I got after test driving my husband's iphone for a few days....my 10+ years on the BB made typing emails and texts on the iphone frustrating beyond belief....love the Torch but does not have as many apps...I use mine mainly for email and texting and the occasional google search or FB update and I have no complaints (the last couple of days withstanding). Mu Husband and I have a family plan with Rogers....

Samsung Galaxy S2....great Android device!

Apps are great, runs a dual-core processor. I believe that Bell is still the only provider that carries it.

Highly recommended....

I don't understand the comment that BlackBerry is behind the 8 ball...have you seen the specs on the OS 7 phones? They have 1.5 times the memory of the iPhone 4S and a faster processor than the iPhone 4 and most Android phones.

Anyway...Mike knows I will be voting BlackBerry for him, but the choice is yours.

Try everything out there - save the Bold 9900 for last and compare it to the rest. Once you type on the keyboard, you won't think twice about another phone. The LCD is as crisp as the retina on iPhone and its snappy with the 1.2Ghz processor.

I'm going through the exact same thing.

I currently use a BB.

I think I want an iPhone, but everyone around me loves their HTC's.

I feel an iPhone might be more compatible with the "rest of the world" in terms of downloading Apps, etc.

I also need a phone, still using my old Nokia 6682 that I got from Rogers 4 years ago, still works great, but just want something newer. No touchscreen though, not a fan. Basically looking for something similar to a Blackbury or an iPhone, but not a touchscreen.

Keep it real, keep it Canadian. At times like this we should ALL bite the bullet and buy Canadian whenever and wherever possible.

I was a loyal Blackberry user for over 10 years until last year when after spending 7 hours in a hotel room rebuilding my entire calendar I switched to Apple. I had had enough. There are things I miss on the BB, but integration with other Apple products I had owned previously make it all worth while.

I have a brother who works for Nvidia with the Tegra division and he uses a bunch of devices. I'm getting an LG 2x Android phone next week to use in States for winter. It looks cool.

I think it's a personal choice Mike - but I think I've left Blackberry for good.

Cheers,
Andrew

You should get one of these:

I don't need a mobile phone. If I'm out, my voice mail takes messages. I can play them back later. I also get a copy of my messages emailed to me as an MP3. Primus has wireless devices as well, but decided not to get one. I don't need one. Cellphones didn't exist in the old days so why do we have to text and do all that stuff now. Go Habs.

From my perspective it depends on how much of your 'online' life you've moved to be a mobile experience. For instance, I only do online banking, but I would always do it from my laptop and never on a mobile device (speed, screen size, efficiency of GUI movements, etc.). That goes for reading gawker, thestar, etc. I'm not a huge user of Twitter or Facebook, so using those social media apps while mobile doesn't interest me. About the only thing I need my smartphone to do is email, text messages and the occasional Google Maps.
Therefore, I'm a dedicated BB user, and I love the new Bold 9900.

I would get a rotary dial phone
as they never have corrupt for me.

This is the only correct answer - get a loaner from someone and wait until next spring for either the iPhone 5 or the new BB with their new OS. Both (although likely just one - guess which) will be game changers.

Well, the problem with these mobile devices as well is that they're touch screen. I nknow you can get speech programmes for them, but they're expensive. No need for a mobile device. Dial phones suck. Sure, they're reliable, but you can't dial fast on them. I know because I used to use one as well.

Mike, is this really a debate?

Aren't you an avid user of Google's products already??

Android on a Samsung Galaxy S2. Nuff said.
The integration with your Gmail account, Calendar and Contacts is totally worth it.

One word. Google.
You love the Google and the Gmail and the bestest friend of Google and Gmail is the Android.
I gave up my BB and I have a Mac and an Ipad but i love the shit out of my Android.
Get one and you'll never be disappointed. And don't forget to go to humbleandfredradio.com. Often and then more after that.

I'd never get an iPhone, because I don't want top be handcuffed to Apple and all their protectionist proprietary stuff. With my Galaxy I don't need iTunes to sync or listen to music. I can still use the chargers and cables from my previous phones because they're standard mini-usb. I'm still getting used to the touch screen, but the screen itself and the browsing experience is far and away beyond what I had with any blackberry to this point.

I vote iPhone all the way. I am not an Apple snob (no Mac, no iPad) but I find this is my favourite phone. The BB was okay but useless when it came to anything but e-mail and BBM.

I heard Andriods are good too.

"And, if you can give Toronto Mike a phone, I'd love to hear from you"

Mike,

Come on, don't turn in to one of those people. You should be better than that and able to afford a phone.
