Ok boys, we can trash talk here and our trash talking will be archived for our great-grandkids.

The 2009 pool begins...... NOW!

I'm liking this Mike guy. He's funny, handsome and smart!

WTF ... you had the draft already?

Don't know who will win but I can tell you it won't be Mike.

I'm sorry I couldn't be there to defend my title....

Toronto Mike
April 15, 2009 / 11:01

You should have flown in... it's worth the flight.

For the record, I'm currently tied in first place.

Jason
April 15, 2009 / 12:03

Now that our picks are out of the way, I'll share my thoughts on the first round. Hopefully I'm not too wrong. :)

Bruins over MON in 5
Price will steal one game but Montreal's weak attack will not be enough to beat Thomas or the balanced (and hot) scoring the Bruins possess. Bruins get their revenge.

WAS over NYR in 6
Crappy goaltending will keep the Caps from winning sooner. NYR scoring is bad, but Avery, Drury and Callahan will provide what they need to make it interesting. Hopefully Caps replace Theodore with their rookie goaltender in later rounds.

NJ over CAR in 6
CAR's scoring is too inconsistent and so is their goaltending. Although NJ scoring is cold and their goaltending is only average recently, they have too much experience not to pull it off. It depends on how Parise handles the playoffs really. This is probably the series with the most uncertainty imo.

PHI over PIT in 7
PIT scoring is held together by Crosby but the rest of the team has been cold. Too many cold scorers on PIT including Sykora and Guerin. PIT is also missing too many important role players that they had last year. And they're missing Hossa. PHI has balanced and consistent scoring, are physical and hard working. PHI has inconsistent goaltending and it will hurt them, but not enough to stop them from winning this series (by a thread).

ANA over SAN in 7
SAN's scoring has been very low lately and they've had a number of injuries. Too many people coming back from injury too early will hurt SAN imo (Marleau, Clowe). ANA has had hot scoring from a number of sources and is healthy. ANA defense is better and Niedermeyer is finally out of his slump. ANA plays a playoff (physical) style, whereas SAN has shown players like Thornton and Marleau don't translate well in the post season. Huge upset here. Don't cry SAN fans, don't cry.

DET over CLM in 7
This won't be as easy as many claim. DET's scoring has been average and it's goaltending has been stinky. CLM has had average scoring and stellar goaltending. This is going to create a low scoring back and forth series and luck will play a big part of it. The difference in the teams is the depth of their veteran roleplayers who give DET an edge, and will allow DET to pull out wins on close games.

VAN over STL in 6
Goaltending is about equal but I like Vancouvers balanced attack more than I like STLs attack. Burrows and Kesler will go to the net, which is what the Sedins (and Vancouver) have been missing in previous years. Scoring will be low but Vancouver will be able to win games with their depth. Slow players like Sundin will be outworked and will look bad.

CHI over CAL in 5
CAL scoring has been terrible lately, especially without Rene Bourque. Their veterans aren't playing well at all (Langkow, Conroy). Regehr is hurt and is a huge loss. Phaneuf is too slow and will take a lot of penalties. Kipper is playing average and has not stepped it up, it's possible they might be over playing him. On the other hand, CHIs scoring is hot, balanced, and comes from 3 solid lines. CHI has 4 excellent young D and maybe the hottest goaltending over the past 3 weeks (Khabi). CAL has terrible puck possession and CHI is a puck possession team with fast defense who won't get rocked by the CAL forecheck. It will be hard for CAL to score without the puck. CHI in 5.

Jason - have you forwarded this and your resume to TSN? Jesus Christ man, I hope you got paid by the word.

Way off on the Flames...GO FLAMES GO!!! I can't trash talk to the guys who posted earlier...too much to scroll up.

Ryan
April 17, 2009 / 23:35

Patino, you take a Canuck at #2 (high pick) and three blues towards the end??

Did u forget they were playing eachother?

Toronto Mike
April 18, 2009 / 10:46

Patino was cleverly hedging his bets. He's in the lead and possibly only shedding a few late pick Blues.

Steve's also riding the Canucks train to early-lead-ville.

Jason and Lamster are in serious trouble.

As for me, don't you worry your pretty little head's about it... when the Sharks awaken from their slumber, I'll be just fine.

Ryan
April 18, 2009 / 18:13

Sorry Marc. Your great #10 pick of Huntwick isn't looking so great. I hope his spleen being removed does't hurt his point total for you.

Ryan
April 18, 2009 / 18:13

Oh Yeah,

To Huntwick,

Here is too a full recovery and good health going forward.

Don't want to seem like an A-hole!!!

Patino
April 18, 2009 / 20:09

Malkin for MVP!!!!

Ya I wasn't happy picking 3 Blues players but what are you gonna do...

Toronto Mike
April 19, 2009 / 19:36

Ok, I realize I drafted 5 Sharks, and they've only played one game, in which they were shutout, but...

... how do I manage to suck so bad? I'm a smart guy. I love hockey. Heck, I just got back from an AHL playoff game. Google considers me a fuckin' authority on many Maple Leafs subjects.

How the fuck is it that my team total is less than Malkin's? How the fuck is it that I'm dead last again?

Shieeet....

elvis
April 20, 2009 / 09:01

Nik Antropov has more points than 80% of my team. Fuck you.

Toronto Mike

Now I feel better. I'm just as bad as Elvis, that Twitter-hating, Aerosmith loving jerkoff from Oshawa.

Steve
April 20, 2009 / 11:29

Watch out, Patino! When Mike starts liking your picks, you know you're in trouble.

elvis
April 20, 2009 / 11:53

Actually, you're worse you ass pirate - only 3 of your players actually has a point. Nice work.

Toronto Mike
April 20, 2009 / 13:04

San Jose - Fucking - Sharks.

Ryan
April 20, 2009 / 15:15

I agree with Mike. I may have wasted a pick on Boyle.

Damn Sharks! It's not over but how is this possible?? Every year? Wow.

They do shoot the puck. I think they win game three though... hands down!!

After all, how could i be wrong?

Lamster
April 21, 2009 / 12:28

Looks like the "Last Place Mike" is living up to his name. Don't worry you have company so you're not ALL alone...

Toronto Mike
April 22, 2009 / 08:51

Hey, "Last Place Lamster", how's the weather down there?

Lamster
April 22, 2009 / 12:25

Ugly...don't know how you deal with it all the time. I commend you! I'll let you have it back tomorrow...

Ryan
April 22, 2009 / 13:13

Mike, I have 3rd place points but i am in 4th in the standings. Come on!!!!

I am great. Go boyle!!!!

Toronto Mike
April 22, 2009 / 13:32

My bad, as the kids would say.

April 22, 2009 / 13:39

Hey Joe C and Lamster - stop staring at my ass.

Gary
April 23, 2009 / 08:11

Sean Avery...Major Goon or misunderstood??? Discuss.

Lamster
April 23, 2009 / 08:59

Hey Elvis...who's staring at who's ass now??? Looks like "Last Place Mike" is working his way down for some basement bargain hunting...

Toronto Mike
April 23, 2009 / 09:12

Hey Lamster, you're the guy with all those Flyers and Flames, right?

Yeah, you're scary.

Everyone is afraid of me because I'm a Sharks win away from leaving y'all in my dust. Boo-yah!

Lamster
April 23, 2009 / 13:52

Really??? Sharks??? I hope you didn't put down your mortgage for that bet...odds are worse than the lottery...not a Ducks fan in particular but the Sharks ain't looking too good...GO FLAMES GO!!! You can tell your neighbour I said that...

Ryan
April 23, 2009 / 14:56

I just realized for first time Marc has two teams only.

WOW!!!!

That is tough to do!!!!!

But if Bruins play Red Wings in Finals...... Watch out.

Jason
April 24, 2009 / 10:37

It's looking like a Bruins / Detroit final, so Marc is looking good imo. The way DET is playing, I'm not sure there is a team in the west that can knock them off.

Ryan
April 26, 2009 / 19:02

If ya took a risk on the Rangers like me.... Ouch. Tuesday isn't looking like a good bet for the lackluster Rangers....

Oh Well, here is to SJ pushing the series to 7.....

Toronto Mike
April 26, 2009 / 19:05

I second that emotion. I need the Sharks to come back to have a prayer.

elvis
April 28, 2009 / 07:16

SJ is dead. Burn.

Toronto Mike
April 28, 2009 / 09:01

I Am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

More importantly, I see Lamster's at 22 points with one player remaining, and that guy could get eliminated tonight.

That would give Lamster the lowest point total in modern playoff pool history.

Thanks, Lamster!!!!!!

I Am Jack's smirking revenge.

elvis
April 28, 2009 / 21:37

Please, for the love of God, let Carolina win tonight.

Toronto Mike
April 28, 2009 / 22:14

How the hell did the Devils blow that game?

At least I won't finish last.

elvis
April 28, 2009 / 22:14

CAROLINA!!! YES YES YES!

Jason
April 29, 2009 / 01:31

Well, 6 out of 8 predications isn't bad. I knew NJ/CAR was going to be close but the end of that game was fairly dramatic.

Toronto Mike
April 29, 2009 / 08:44

What's with neither Felice losing a player in the first round.

There hasn't been familial success like that since Wayne and Brent Gretzky set the brother scoring record.

Anonymous
April 29, 2009 / 17:36

It's between Steve, Pops and Marc in my opinon.. with Jason having an outside shot if Chi upsets Vancouver.

Ryan
April 29, 2009 / 17:37

Btw, I am anonymous.

Lamster
April 29, 2009 / 17:56

Good times while it lasted...good luck to all!!!

One good thing came out of this pool for Mike, he's not going to be last this year...

Ryan
April 29, 2009 / 18:11

Patino, you have a good shot at this as well.....

Actually, I'm really liking Marc's silent philosophy of choosing two teams only. Damn, why did anyone else not pick up on it so we could block him?

I am the one who noticed the Black hawks were all Canes, I am the one who noticed that a player was missing from the list. Could someone else not have caught this one?

You are all a bunch of self-obsessed A-holes!!! Especially you..... You know who you are!!!!!!!!

Toronto Mike
April 29, 2009 / 19:16

There seems to be a correlation between drafting position and success.

I noticed this trend last year, and it's continued into this year.

By drafting early, you get a very good player, on a good team. Then, you start to augment that pick with other good players from the same team. Those who draft late, have less options for pick #1, and this adversely affects future picks.

Pops and Marc drafted #1 and #2 respectively. They are in great shape.

Lamster and I got shit picks, and will finish in the toilet.

I'm sick and tired of drafting last. Enough is enough.

Steve
April 30, 2009 / 16:06

Keaton always said, "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Marc Felice.

Marc
May 5, 2009 / 13:50

I believe you may have spoken too soon my child.

Ryan
May 7, 2009 / 18:26

Mike, Dennis Wideman has 6 pts and you have only given him 5. Please correct my brother from the same mother!!

Ryan
May 9, 2009 / 16:01

Mike, can you please give Guerin an extra point from 6 to 7. Not your fault, they added an assist after the game last night. I think they changed it so you might want to check out the point totals.

Toronto Mike
May 9, 2009 / 16:25

New Rule: Everyone audits their points after round two.

Vancouver is out of there.
Sorry Steve.:(

Props to Jason for taking a risk on 6 Blackhawks. I think this makes you the favorite buddy.... But Pops and Patino are not far behind.

elvis
May 13, 2009 / 10:34

Jesus Carolina - just win dammit!

Toronto Mike
May 14, 2009 / 08:07

Since Alexi's letting me park in his driveway for the next two months, I'm awarding him 10 extra points.

Cool?

elvis
May 15, 2009 / 08:41

God Bless Paul Maurice.

Jason
May 15, 2009 / 10:25

Wow, it looks good for me. Hey, I know this is a bold prediction, but I think Chicago will actually win the cup this year. Most people think they can't take DET, but after the way they undressed Luongo (who is excellent), Osgood is going to look like garbage. CHI is infinitely more deep than both PIT and CAR, therefore, CHI wins the cup. You heard it here first!

Toronto Mike
May 15, 2009 / 10:29

If Chicago wins the cup, the Leafs will finally own the longest Stanley Cup drought in NHL history!

Ryan
May 24, 2009 / 15:09

This may be close....

I'm not in it, but i'm still following. Does that make me loyal to the pool or just very, very lonely and bored????

Jason
May 28, 2009 / 01:13

Great, I spoke too soon, I thought I'd have a small lead by now. I guess it's Malkin vs Franzen vs Hossa down the stretch. Sigh.

elvis
June 5, 2009 / 10:46

Who's worst? Lambster or Alexi?

Toronto Mike
June 5, 2009 / 10:49

Is that a trick question? Lamster, by a country mile.

elvis
June 6, 2009 / 08:24

Alexi has SIX players left and no chance of winning. Lambster picked teams that didn't advance - Alexi just picked shitty players.

Strong arguement that Alexi doesn't have a fucking clue.

Toronto Mike
June 6, 2009 / 09:41

Alexi did have the good sense to draft Crosby first, a Grade A pick.

Lamster went with Cammalleri, a solid C pick, no matter how you slice it.

pops
June 7, 2009 / 11:53

Franzen has 23 points I

believe.

It's been a good playoff

run right Mike

Ryan
June 7, 2009 / 18:24

Alexi's picks were interesting. But any way you slice it he picked a better squad that Lamster.

I'm still hoping for a 30 pt game from Zett, Letang and Guerin.

GO BOONER GO!!!!!

(nice job Patino)

Alexi
June 11, 2009 / 23:00

Alexi? The worst? I'm only 9 points behind Pops, with 6 players left. If all my pens have an amazing game 7 I could end up in second, exactly where I've finished 2 of the last 4 pools. So I think its fair to say that I'm decent, or at the very least, that I'm 38 points better then Elvis.

Ryan
June 14, 2009 / 17:57

Congrats Patino.... Good job!

Next year it is mine!!!

Oh, and yet another year ahead of my bros!!
