OK Blue Jays (Let’s Play Ball!)

Published August 18, 2007 @ 14:55 in The Best of Toronto Mike, Toronto Blue Jays

bluejaysAbout a year ago I asked you good people for an MP3 of the Toronto Blue Jays' official song, "OK Blue Jays (Let's Play Ball!). Hours later I had it, and I meant to share it with everyone but somehow forgot.

Listening to today's Jays game against the Orioles I heard John McDonald put down a perfect bunt with players on the corners. Everyone was safe and I was just happy to hear the suicide squeeze was still a part of the game. That got me singing this song and finally, 15 months after the fact, I'm sharing it with you all.

Sing it loud, sing it proud. The lyrics are below the player, as if you'll need them...

You've got a diamond
You've got nine men
You've got a hat and a bat
And that's not all
You've got the bleachers
Got 'em from spring 'til fall
You got a dog and a drink
And the umpire's call
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Is that a fly ball
Or is it a seagull
Coming in from the lake
Just to catch the game?
It's the last inning
Our guys are winning
Dave's put down a smoker
A strike
And you've got no doubt
(You're out!)
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

It's a beautiful evenin', fans
At the ballpark
When the game starts
Warm summer breezes
Sun's goin' down
And it's all dark
At the ballpark
But that's okay…it's a night game

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Bring on the White Sox
Bring on the BoSox
Bring on the Brewers
The Rangers and the Yankees too
We'll beat the Indians
We'll beat the Tigers
We'll beat the A's so bad it'll make
Billy blue
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Sigh...this song gives me chills. I wish they still played this version of it!

Megan, I agree. The chill factor is high on this one.

This is from the good 'ol days when the Dave putting down a smoker was none other than Dave Stieb.

OMG.

thanks mike.

I have to get that for my mp3 for when I run. It will get me though the uphill parts of my run.

A question for you... Did this song ever get radio air play back in the 80's ?

Toronto Mike

I don't remember hearing it on CFTR back in the day.

I can throw you the MP3. Play it on a continuous loop and you'll never tire.

I remember back in the mid-nineties this song was used for the Sydney Blues Baseball Club in the short-lived Australian Baseball League (especially in 1996 when we were Champions) as Sydney was affilliated with Toronto. Hearing it again gave me great memories. Can you all do us Aussies a favour and make some noise about starting a professional baseball league up in Australia again? I loved it first time I saw it.

David, I had no idea Sydney used this song. That's wild.

Now I'm going to search for your logo...

Thanks for this! Tons of memories. Did you remember the song written for Tom Henke? I had the 45 record years ago, and wish I had held on to it.

My bad! I see you posted the song several months ago. Any chance of you shooting it my way? And maybe Ok Blue Jays as well?

Toronto Mike
December 25, 2007 / 20:15

Caleb

ooo ok but if theyre talking about the yankees manager, what does that have to do with the jays beating the A's?

Toronto Mike
January 1, 2008 / 19:29

Billy Martin managed the A's from 1980 - 1982. That was both before and after stints with the Yankees.

It's also on my Blue Jays Album - Class of '92 CD that's still kicking around.

Oddly enough, Humble and Fred are credited on a couple tracks. Separately though.

OMG I must have this.... I am still trying to find "Let's go Blue Jays" as well.... Many a game spent at SkyDome and the Ex... I miss baseball and dangit now the only live games I can watch are if I fly to SEATTLE... *sigh*

Kirsten
March 6, 2008 / 19:33

SWEET Mike, thanks for the quick reply. Now maybe you can help me with my second search... the song that they used to play I think right before games started that included *this is from about a 12 year old memory, sorry*

"Let's go Blue Jays, rock em and a sock em and a bring them all home?"

I'm sure it was on one of those Blue Jays CDs, but I'm having a hard hard time finding it.

Toronto Mike
March 7, 2008 / 11:18

Kristen, that's the refrain from the embarrassingly awful "The Blue Jays Rap".

That one is so bad, it's good. I think the lyric is "Let's Go Blue Jays, Whack the ball, smack the ball, in the SkyDome. Let's go Blue Jays, rock em and a sock em and a bring them all home."

Kirsten

*grins* Yup, that's it. Now I just have to find the download for it. Thanks Mike!

Thanks for the wonderful memories this song just brought back. I clearly remember watching games at the Ex, and have been back to T.O. a few times to see some games at the Dome (when in TO, I always stay at the hotel in the Stadium). I also remember the fowl seagull incident witn Dave Winfield which created such flap, and I assume it is the motivation for the line "or is it seagull..."

Can you please email me the mp3 for that song?

With Gratitude,

Jeremy Cooper
(Grew up in TO, now in NYC)

I think the seagull line is there because Exhibition Stadium always attracted a lot of seagulls. It was by Lake Ontario, there was always a lot of popcorn and junk and there was no roof, so it was sort of a seagull paradise.

Can I get a copy of this song? I went up to watch a Blue Jay/Oriole game for my bachelor party a few years back. That game had a streaker and this song with every one doing calistetics (sp?). Great game, even better beer. God Bless Canada.

Thanks for the memories.

I am going through a box of 45s to log them and possible sell some nd guess what I came across? Yup, you guessed it, the *original* 45 of OK Blue Jays still in the original sleeve and both the record and sleeve in *mint* condition. I may consider selling it if the price is right.

Thanks so much for posting this! Great memories sitting at Exhibition Stadium for evening games, on the first base side being blinded by the sun until it went below the bleachers.

Could I bother you for a copy of the mp3? Thank you!

P.S. Does anyone remember/have a copy of "Terminator - The Ballad of Tom Henke"?

Perfect to hear!!!
I have long since moved away from TO but just the other day parts of the song came to me but I could not remember all the words.I could not wait to get back to work (hight speed) to search it out and sing along. Thank you for finding it. I was saddended to here they do not play it during the game any more, that a shame.

Toronto Mike
May 6, 2008 / 15:36

Do they really not play this anymore? They were playing it as recently as last season when I last attended a game. Can anyone else corroborate Nicole's statement?

This is so funny, my husband and I were just talking about this song last night. I love this song, they should start playing it at the games again. The Friday night home games with the retro uniforms would be prefect for it!! Can you please send me the song as well I would love to have it. Thanks
