Team Canada Olympic Roster Unveiled: I Didn't Make It
Published December 30, 2009 @ 16:02 in Olympics

olympicsI understood why I was left off the Olympic men's hockey roster in 1998, 2002 and 2006. I wasn't playing hockey. In fact, I didn't play ice hockey after 1987 until last year.

But that's just it. I've been playing hard every week during the past two winters. I've improved my game to the point where I'm good for two goals a week. Furthermore, and most importantly, I've shown a knack for elevating my play come crunch time, in the spirit of Doug Gilmour and Michael Jordan. I've got all the intangibles you want in a hockey player.

This afternoon, as I drove to play hockey, I heard the members of Team Canada unveiled. There were some great players named, and some great players left off the team. That's where I'll be. Off the team.

I honestly thought I had a shot this year. I'm not sure what more I can do. In Stevie Y we trust, I guess.

Here's our Canadian men's hockey team for the Vancouver Olympic games.

I've now got my sights set on 2014.

2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch = The Olympic Toke
Published May 20, 2009 @ 08:42 in Olympics

olympicsI just saw the torch for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and, well, it's a joint. Seriously, you can see it for yourself below this entry if you doubt me.

Composed of stainless steel, aluminum and sheet moulding, the torch was designed to evoke snow, ice, skiing and skating, but to many, the metre-long white torch looks suspiciously like a marijuana joint, especially when lit.

The observation has become so common in this city that it's hard to know who was the first to say, "Hey, doesn't that look like ..."

But the torch's resemblance to British Columbia's biggest cash crop was evident right away to Jodie Emery, editor of Cannabis Culture magazine.

"A lot of people come to Vancouver because it's marijuana-friendly, so I think people who already enjoy a joint themselves will feel a little more kinship to the Olympics," said Emery, who ran as a Green party candidate in the provincial election this month.

"I'm sure the organizers didn't intend for it to look like a joint, but that's what a lot of people are seeing."

I'm okay with the Olympic Toke. The London 2012 Olympic Games have a guy getting a hummer as their official logo. Click thru if you don't believe me.

Don't Bogart that torch, man.
