That Leaf power play..... Scary.

1. Leafs are so damn fun right now. And that PP is scary!

2. This morning's ep of Hebsy on Sports will be recorded on my dining room table because Chris Brown is still painting the studio. Yesterday's ep of Toronto Mike'd with Mike Zeisberger was recorded on the dining room table and it worked out fine. Go listen to that!

3. Speaking of Toronto Mike'd, I met Gill Deacon when she came over for an episode. She was in Bag of Hammers, ya know! Anyway, she's great, and I'm sorry to learn she won't be on Here and Now for a while because she's getting treatment for cancer. As we discussed on my show, she's had cancer before. Fuck cancer.

October 12, 2018 @ 7:58 AM

Beatts

:( Yeah just read your twitter about Gill. Love her show. We're all in her corner, fight hard Gill!

Cheryl

I'm not first. I had trouble finding this. I closed and opened my browser several times. My Habs lost. That's no good at all. They did score a goal in the end, but then the fricken Kings challenged it and it got taken back, so Carey Price allows three goals. Well, that was not good, but they play Shittsburgh again tomorrow and they'll beat them again. Ready for some football on Sunday. Hopefully I get wins by my Browns, Ravens, and Cardinals. I need them all to win.

And as we learned from the second Splash'N Boots episode, Gill is Boots' cousin.

October 12, 2018 @ 8:35 AM

I haven't listened to that episode and missed that info. Positive thoughts to her!

Al The Royal Pain

Next Friday, we're playing a show in the city! Unfortunately for Mike it's East of Yonge, but you're all invited anyway! Here are the details:

As Mike indicated, fuck cancer....actually no...this disease in particular deserves more vitriol than that...FUCK CANCER. In the last 10 years, it seems to have crept in and affected so many people around me..and I don't have a large circle of family and friends. I've seen it suck the life out of young people and older folks alike, and if anything it's re-inforced the importance of living life fully.

Regret nothing.

Fresser's alert (Yiddish for glutton!!): Tomorrow there is a Poutine-eating championship event
taking place at Yonge-Dundas Square. Not a fan of that food combo, but noted Kiss tribute
act Destroyer will be performing between 10 AM and 12:15 PM, so that alone almost makes
it worthwhile (for me, anyway!). I saw these fellas at the Taste of the Kingsway five weeks ago,
and I can personally vouch that their Gene Simmons placeholder designate is just as much of a
shill as the real deal!!! And the dude performing as Ace Frehley was sure as heck a genuine laff riot!

What's up with Jamar? Did he make it over to TMHQ yesterday?

A senseless tragedy.

How bout them Leafs :)

I know this scoring won't last all season, but we should all enjoy it while it lasts :)
and everyone is talking about AM and rightly so, but man can JT skate! Him and Marner are making people look silly!

October 12, 2018 @ 11:23 AM

I saw the Gill Deacon story earlier. fuck cancer x 1000000000000 . My Brother died from Cancer at Christmas 2011, My best friends daughter died from Skin cancer in 2012 and My wife's best friend has just found out that the cancer they removed in June that had a 1% chance of coming back has come back.

So yeah Fuck cancer and the horse it rode in on.

No... he couldn't come over in the morning so we agreed to do it next week. I've been holding Tuesday for him but he hasn't confirmed yet.

The Leafs turned into the Golden State Warriors of hockey, so entertaining!

Might as well start shopping Nylander for a defenceman because it looks like they're going to have the same problems as last year's team ie goal prevention.

October 12, 2018 @ 2:06 PM

@Mike
Just saw your Tweeted "Cranes In The Sky" photo, and really regret having to say this, but I honestly
prefer "Guns In The Sky", of better yet, "Wheel In The Sky" in a pinch!!

@bsmntdwllr73

What about "Touch The Sky" by great Republican Kanye West?

Make Music Great Again!

October 12, 2018 @ 3:53 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Urooj Islam
Good catch with that one!! From Kanye's more enlightened earlier era, and you never can go wrong
with a vintage Curtis Mayfield sample. Not to mention, it also had a great accompanying video.
And bonus Kudos for that MAKE MUSIC GREAT again tagline. Too true!!!

October 12, 2018 @ 3:58 PM

@Dale, yes very senseless. I volunteered 2 days looking for Kaden. It was chilling to be at the family home and to see the area where Kaden was swept away. Volunteers there were great.

@bsmntdwllr73 -- 10 a.m.? That seems a little early in the day for poutine, or a Kiss tribute act.

@Torontomike
On your dining room table or at your dining room table?
@H.O.E.:
10:00 A.M. Saturday morning is probably just a continuation of Friday night for that particular crowd.

October 12, 2018 @ 11:32 PM

Cheryl

Well, the Price is right tonight. My Habs play Shittsburgh again. They beat them, and they'll do it again. My Coyotes are going to beat the Sabres. Habs and Coyotes to the finals. I know this. Leafs will cool off. Football tomorrow. My Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals will all win. There will still be a Superbowl party, Stanley Cup party and NBA party. It's the World Series Party that got canceled.

October 13, 2018 @ 7:02 AM

@H.o.E.
Check the Yonge-Dundas Square calendar for more info, could be some kind of error regarding

October 13, 2018 @ 2:15 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
I was there as well and you were right about that start time. Played 3 or 4
different songs from the last time I saw them. Have to admit, a little bit
freaked out by the fringe street-level crowd such public events often draw out.
At least some of these folks got fed today via the free Poutine. As well, quite glad
that I was able to score an order of fries straight-up without the cheese, curds and
gravy. Totally not my thing. But you never know, 'cause I've been scolded at Italian
restaurants for asking for my veal or chicken w/o sauce. Guess it's never a good idea to piss
off Nonna or turn down her family's generations-old sauce recipe!!

October 13, 2018 @ 4:00 PM

Cheryl

My Habs won. They needed a shootout to beat Shittsburgh though. At least they won, but there was no Carey Price. He had the flu. If Carey Price was in there, they would have won by a bunch. My Coyotes lost though to Barfalo if all teams. That was no good. My Coyotes got shut out. They'll heat up soon. They have to. Now let's go Browns, Ravens, and Cardinals. Win and make me happy.

October 14, 2018 @ 7:29 AM

H.o.E.

@bsmntdwllr73 -- If it's free, I'll take it regardless of it's fries alone or with the gravy and cheese. I also got a free tiny Heinz ketchup bottle handed to me on the way out.
I saw uniformed security making sure a guy who looked like Smokey The Crackhead (from The PJs, if anyone remembers that short-lived stop-motion animation series from almost 20 years ago) left the Square, and then stopping him from trying to come back a few minutes later, but otherwise I couldn't see anything wrong with the crowd. I wish there had been some security people at the Canada Day thing at Woodbine Park to deal with the non-stop hyperactive Mr. Meth-Head who was near me.

Maybe it's because it's free and there's low expectations, but I now often seem to like seeing tribute bands as much, if not more than, the tired, partial remnants of the real classic rock acts. Speaking of those acts, the under-construction 5000-seat Fallsview venue looks bigger than I thought it would. I had to back away almost half a block to fit it all into one photo.

October 14, 2018 @ 10:49 AM

jj

I found a bunch of Degrassi Jr High and Degrassi High videos on YouTube - what a TRIP!!! The storylines are sometimes ridiculous, don't get me started on Spike getting pregnant, SMH.

October 14, 2018 @ 10:54 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
True enough, yesterday's YD Square crowd was a lot more restrained than it might have been
during a nighttime show, but in the past I've had some pretty close calls with some of these
folks: Unasked for karate action almost taking my head off and being threatened by an Aboriginal
dude who believed that everyone there at the time (both male and female!!) were trying to "make it"
with his LADY!! That thought never even entered my mind. And you're right about a lot of those
tribute acts: They are often more professional and musically in-tune versus whatever the current line-up of their so-called inspiration is calling a live performance these days! Also, the cost is often nil and you're also bound to hear tracks that haven't been played in ages. Just wish that there were more acts covering classic prog and hard rock acts, but such desires might not always lead to the required beer-selling numbers!!

October 14, 2018 @ 1:43 PM

To Toronto Overall sports Fans:
Argos win grey cup last year & eliminated already from playoffs this year.
TFC with MLS championship last year & already eliminated from the playoffs this year.
Jays were probably eliminated in late June with a good record in April.
Our only hope are the Leafs with a good start, but defense is suspect. Freddie the goalie has stood on his head making saves & Matthews, Reilly, Tavares & Marner have been on fire SO FAR.
BMO field must be a JINX.

October 14, 2018 @ 8:12 PM

Rob J

@andrew

You forgot the Raptors getting swept in the playoffs by a lower-seeded team, losing game 4 by 35 points and leading to a coaching change. (I know, I know, THIS is their year for sure).

October 14, 2018 @ 8:44 PM

andrew

@Rob J
I did forget about the Raptors. Another one bit the dust.
This may be their year, Hopefully.

Although the Marlies did win the Calder cup last year & this year are abysmal.

October 14, 2018 @ 9:06 PM

Rob J

@andrew
With 7 teams if you include the Wolfpack, just by the law of averages one or two will be successful! Hopefully 2018 is better for Toronto sports fans than the past 9 months+.

The $5.2 billion dollar man!

October 14, 2018 @ 10:09 PM

Well, my Browns and Cardinals both lost really badly. That sucks. My Ravens did win though. That's good. I got one win. I need them all to win though. You calling my Cavs a bad team, but they're not. They'll beat the Raptors on Wednesday. Tonight my Habs play Detroit. Beat those chicken wings. I hope Carey Price is feeling better. Too bad he had the flu.

From the even musical gurus can sometimes make mistakes: Last night
I listened to my first new episode of Alan Cross's "The Ongoing History of
New Music" in nearly 20 years. Transformative cover versions was the topic
du jour, and near the end of the show Mr. Cross inadvertently(?) confused Eddie
Vedder with Eddie Van Halen, when he referred to the former as the guitar soloist
on Mikey Jackson's "Beat It!!!" This was in reference to Weezer's epic cover
of Toto's "Africa" from earlier this year, and how the latter band's heroic guitarist
Steve Lukather played all the other guitar parts on that arse-kicking (if somewhat
credibility-straining!) track from late 1982. Long story short, even radio legends
can slip-up once in a blue moon. And in A.C.'s defense, he did feature E. Vedder's
ace interpretation of Indio's "Hard Sun" earlier in that same show.

October 15, 2018 @ 3:12 PM

bsmntdwllr73

So last weekend I had a rather strange encounter on the Dufferin bus heading
north from Queen Street. An Eastern European gentleman in his fifties named
Luke, completely unprovoked by Moi(!), started talking to me and asking ?s
pertaining to the subject of romance (why me?!?). Anyway, he informed me
that his live-in lady love of 17 years had recently kicked him to the curb. This
was still obviously a fresh wound so he was understandably highly emotional.
I tried to tell him that I would be of no help in this regard, but he wouldn't hear
of it. Somehow he had made the major mistake of assuming that I was also
a man of great romantic experience and that maybe I could be of some
assistance. WRONG!!! What little I know of true love and heartbreak is strictly
limited to over-exposure to such perennial '70s throwback musical sad-sacks
like Gilbert O'Sullivan and Eric Carmen!! Believe me, Dufferin subway station
couldn't arrive quickly enough! Hopefully his next bus victim was more of a well-
rounded human being!!

Leafs goalie Anderson day to day with knee injury & they have recalled a goalie from their ECHL team in Newfoundland.
Time for Sparks to show his ability possibly on a long term basis.
Doesn't bide well for the Leafs going forward.

October 15, 2018 @ 5:38 PM

@dale
Anderson's a Senator. Andersen's the Leaf.

October 15, 2018 @ 5:55 PM

According to Ticketmaster, there is a Dominica supporters area, at the top of section 104. It looks like they haven't sold too many tickets there or in the rest of the stadium. Only the lower level is being used it will probably be less than half filled.

- It's kind of cold and windy today. This big Moosehead banner has come loose and is flapping around, like it might be about to start flying away.

October 15, 2018 @ 6:01 PM

jj

H.o.E. - they should be doing more promo for this game, I only heard about it because of you! maybe though i just don't roam where their ad space is.

that sign looks dangerous, just like a real moose would be lol.

October 15, 2018 @ 10:38 PM

Cheryl

My Habs won last night. Great game. Carey Price still has the flu though, but they still won. How about Tomas Plekanec. He was in his 1000th game. That's something. My Habs or Coyotes are winning the cup this year. Stanley cup party will be on as well as my Superbowl party and my NBA party.

October 16, 2018 @ 6:55 AM

Beatts

Cheryl we're all focused on the Leafs Ron Hainsey. He has 994 games played and will reach his 1000 soon. His was more difficult to attain because Ron started playing with Gordie Howe when hockey was faster and more challenging. Plekanec should have an asterisk* beside his 1000 games because he was carried by his teammates for so long...

;)

October 16, 2018 @ 7:45 AM

Joey Wasaga

It is the year 2018,lots of medical advances.You would think someone might of informed Kerry Price there is such a thing as a flu shot and she would have got one.
Then again maybe she did try to get one but,missed it cause it was on the glove side.

October 16, 2018 @ 8:46 AM

jj

Joey Wasaga - changing Carey to Kerry and calling him a woman, instead of calling him a man is so unoriginal and sexist. There isn't anything inherently weak about being a woman, and you using it as an insult makes you look like a joke.

October 16, 2018 @ 9:15 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Beatts
Don't mean to burst your bubble or ruin any future spank bank fantasies(!), but I kinda have to
inform you that I've never successfully played pick-up baseball, so little chance of those 'first
base' notions you wrote about in response to my Dufferin bus comment yesterday!!! Plus, every
part of my 6flab-encased body belongs to my FEMALE SWEETHEART, so it is ABSOLUTELY not
available for the amusement or 'rebound calisthenics' of Eastern European gentleman who are of advanced age ( and who are most definitely also all about the LADIES). Hope this clears things up for
you somewhat?!?

October 16, 2018 @ 9:54 AM

I would have responded yesterday when I first saw your impassioned response, but once again,
those dreaded public library computer gremlins prevented my DIGITAL LIGHT from shining. In truth,
the one time I was forced to play baseball in a public school gym class, I got called out on a walk
to first for holding up the game( due to my most leisurely pace). So, in other words, from that point on, no one started confusing me with good ol' Charlie Hustle!

Cannabis Legalization Eve. Is everyone into it?
Not me as haven't partaked in over 12 years. Rather have a couple of cold beers.
Don't know what this will do for those in high school pressured much like alcohol in the 70's.
Not a fan of this legalization at all.

"Don't know what this will do for those in high school"

I can't imagine weed will be any more available in high schools tomorrow than it was yesterday.

I'm a fan of this legalization, although I too do not partake.

October 16, 2018 @ 7:52 PM

jj

andrew - i don't see it being any different than drinking underage. some kids will do it, some won't. i am only a recreational user, but i am glad it's legal because doing it illegally made me nervous. however, i don't mind people doing it illegally - this just wasn't for me! I am looking forward to tomorrow!

October 16, 2018 @ 8:18 PM

andrew

@ Mike
Why are U a fan of legalization if you don't partake?
It's all about peer pressure, "Come on do it with your friends, you can do it, just 1 toke".
A lot different now than I went to HIGH school.

October 16, 2018 @ 9:15 PM

jj

andrew - my friends never pressured me to do smoke, or drink, which they definitely did more than i ever did. and i knew to say no. my parents never smoked or drank as much as i ever did, or will. i always knew it was not my thing, personally.

My Coyotes lost. That was no good at all, but they lost. Carey Price is a male, not a female. My Habs will win tonight beat the Blues. The Blues will sing the Blues after getting beat by my habs. Basketball tonight. Cavs at Raptors. Cavs will win. Go Cavs. Also my Nets play as well as my Suns. Let's have all wins during Opening Day. Also I am not for this legal marijuana stuff. I don't use it and never will. This is so fricken stupid. Also we're having a postal strike next week. That's no good either. I get mail such as books from the CNIB. I don't care what anyone says. I hate unions. Collective bargaining hurts the public. They're so greedy. Postal workers shouldn't be asking for raises because nobody gets raises these days. I hate unions and I have no sympathy for unions. They shouldn't be allowed to go on strike, so get an agreement and settle this thing fast.

Here is an incomplete list of songs pertaining in some way to the wacky tobacky that I hope
I never have to hear involuntarily ever again:

"Roll Another Number"-Neil Young
"One Toke Over the Line"-Brewer and Shipley
"Dr. Greenthumbs"-Cypress Hill
"THC Groove" (sigh!!)-Bullet Boys
"Smokin' Green"-Anvil
"Don't Bogart That Joint"-Little Feat
"Sweet Leaf"-Black Sabbath
"You Don't Know How It Feels"-Tom Petty
"Mary Jane"-Rick James
"Pass the Dutchie"-Musical Youth
"Because I Get High"-Afroman
"Got to Get You Into My Life"-The Beatles

None for me thanks, I'll just stick to expired Eat More bars from Dollarama and knock-off Tahiti
Treat from Dollar Tree!!

October 17, 2018 @ 9:25 AM

October 18, 2018 @ 2:44 AM

Well, how about those Habs. The Blues were singing the Blues, but my Cavs lost. That sucked. They did okay in the very beginning, but they fricken lost. Also my Nets lost as well, but my Suns won. Well, football tonight. My Cardinals are playing tonight. My Ravens and Browns play on Sunday. Well, the postal workers better not go out. Collective bargaining absolutely does nothing. Think about it. If they get paid at all, it's strike pay and it's not very much. They should be happy they have jobs. It hurts the public because the public doesn't get mail. I hate unions. I have a birthday coming up. I may not get my birthday money as I have an aunt who mails it to me because she doesn't have email or anything, so I won't get my birthday money because they will probably stay out for months and months.

October 18, 2018 @ 7:12 AM

Cheryl you have to always look at the positive side of things. If the postal strike happens, think of all the real estate pamphlets and brochures that won't make it to your door.

This is my favourite Cleveland Browns highlight. It was in January 1981, a home playoff game for the Browns against the Raiders, after the 1980 season. Behind by two points, with less than a minute to go, Cleveland had the ball on the Raiders 13-yard line where a field goal could have won the game for them.
