stay safe in the snow, let's hope the Raps pick up a big win tonight! :D

I believe the technical term for the snow that fell in my hood is "dusting". A dusting of snow.

Re: Raps.... I adore this team! So likeable with the bench mob. I predict a conference final against the Cavs... and I make no prediction there due to the LBJ factor. He's not only the best player I've ever seen, he might be the most durable. A total and complete freak of nature the likes of which we may never see again.

March 2, 2018 @ 8:55 AM

a dusting, but my sister's car still did roll down the driveway :/

I too am excited for this team to go super far, but your LeBron analysis is spot on.

I hope we learn to maintain a decent lead before the season ends, and cannot waitttt to see us shine in post season :D

Be nice, clear your ice. A message from the city of Toronto. - Ben Wicks

March 2, 2018 @ 9:04 AM

I am not first. Oh well. Is there lots of snow out there? I hope not. I have an appointment tomorrow and I hope tomorrow is going to be okay, but who knows. My Cavs lost last night. That sucks. They better start winning again soon. I hope the Wizards win tonight. My Nets also lost in overtime. That sucks as well. My Coyotes won though. Baseball was good. My Indians and Orioles won. My Diamondbacks lost though.

March 2, 2018 @ 9:06 AM

Mike quit playing with the internet algorithms and let Cheryl be first again. This is a travesty.

March 2, 2018 @ 9:10 AM

I am hoping Mother Nature clears the snow in a little while.. LOL.

Cheryl - there isn't a lot, but everyone should be cautious because there could be some icy patches covered by the snow :)

I assume full responsibility for the lateness of this Open Mike. I had to get today's exhilarating episode of TMI online!

March 2, 2018 @ 9:12 AM

Does anyone here know of any other 3rd or 4th tier level podcasts from Etobicoke I can listen to instead?

March 2, 2018 @ 9:42 AM

Not excited at all about this years Oscars telecast. I saw 49 films in theatres in 2017, but only
two of them (Get Out, The Shape Of Water, are among the nine movies nominated for Best
Picture). I'd be interested in seeing Lady Bird and Phantom Thread but haven't found the oomph
to go and do so as of yet. The rest of the field might consist of some good flicks but their subject
matter doesn't turn my proverbial crank. The lack of mainstream/popcorn flicks that the majority
of people go to see probably won't help the overall ratings of the first two-thirds (i.e., the bathroom
break categories, even though they are all very important) of the show, nor will all of the inevitable
political moralizing, finger-pointing, shaming, and MeTooing and Kumbaya-ing, as well as OscarsSoWhite2018 (again, just one Spectrum dude's skewed opinion!!). I do, as always, look
very forward to the "In Memoriam" segment, as it is very important to keep up to date on all the
grips and craft service people who have passed on in the last twelve months!!!

March 2, 2018 @ 9:49 AM

.....just kidding, my defrost and wipers took care of what little accumulation built up on my car overnight. However, apparently schools are shut down in Cambridge and The Hamilton-Niagara area got pounded.

Hey Mike, have you thought about doing show about the resurgence of vinyl and what it means to the music industry? I for one, have drank the kool aid and can't get enough of it. I am sure you kind can find an industry type to talk about it, or even a musician and get their take on it

March 2, 2018 @ 11:48 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

It's funny you mention that. Two recent episodes include chunks about why vinyl is better.

If you listen to the recent Alan Cross and Shawn William Clarke episodes, you'll hear some solid vinyl chatter.

A few hours ago I heard Eddie Vedder's take on Indio's throwback Canuck classic "Hard Sun"
on Q107. His version is from 2007 (perhaps the youngest song currently being played on
the Q!!), but back in 1989 the original was also spun on a regular basis. I'm sure that any
royalties are greatly welcomed at this point, but it would be nice to sometimes hear the
earlier version on the radio as well (love its great production, a combination of Peter Gabriel
and Robbie Robertson's mid-'80s sonic palette, i.e., Daniel Lanois, and Joni Mitchell provided
background vocals on it too.

"Where have all the good times gone?"

March 2, 2018 @ 2:48 PM

Very interesting!! According to Wikipedia (so it must be true!!), Indio wasn't happy that his
former record label signed off on this cover without his permission. I have the original album
on both cassette and CD deep in my storage. "Save For the Memory" was also a single and a great
track as well. British singer-songwriter Martin Page released an album called "In the House of
Stone and Light" in 1994 and he had a vocal timbre similar to Indio. He is more famous, or infamous,
as the case might be, for co-writing both "We Built This City" and "These Dreams" with Bernie Taupin
in 1985.

Mike in Lowville is a name I haven't seen in these parts for quite some time...

March 2, 2018 @ 2:59 PM

In my case, it was a combination of finding myself far to often getting angry after my visits here due to some of the trolls (*cough* Dave W *cough* Argie) and the fact that I had just started a new job and dating the woman who is now my wife. I was in a positive place, and I often found a stream of negativity here that ran counter to what I was looking for.

That being said, I am quite enjoying my time back here, and glad to see that a lot of the old crew are here, and some welcome additions too (I'm looking at you Urooj and Dweller)

...and of course I missed my daily updates on the Habs, Coyotes, Suns and Cavs from Cheryl...Cheryl is awesome!!

Forgot about CQ

Funny how Bell is running for cover on the door to door salesmen promises.

I have my own personal beef with them that I need to iron out tomorrow.
1) Someone from their marketing called and talked to my wife and said you are going to get a free 2 month trial of Crave etc., she said why not, except this month they added the $25.00 charge without the usual $25.00 credit showing up to deduct it out. Don't even know what is on Crave TV.
2) swapped over to Fibe in Dec 2016, upgraded Internet supposedly to unlimited at this time since we were retiring the over priced satellite services and the cost actually came in cheaper with the new services. 3 weeks ago get an email message we are at 98% of our monthly limit of 250 GB, which caught me off guard. Look up original contract, just says Fibe Better no limits.
Call customer service, they tell me I never had it, but they will add unlimited at no extra charge (usually $15.00/mth). now along with Crave they have charged me the $15. Should have been suspicious on this, as they never sent a confirming email. Man I hate Bell and Rogers.

March 2, 2018 @ 9:45 PM

My Suns lost, but my Habs won. That was a great Habs win. They're doing better without Carey Price. Also my Orioles and Indians won. My Diamondbacks lost though. I found this web page on a Google search or something. That's how I found it. I need my Cavs to win tonight as well. They better win.

I'm a diehard Habs fan. At this point, part of me wants them to just tank and hopefully get a high draft pick. But at the same time there's no guaranties now with the lottery. So, I don't know, maybe just try and win and spoile other teams playoff hopes?

I remember Cq! Whatever happened to him? I remember, he always used to give Mike shit because of some of the cars that Ford would lend him for weekends or sometimes weeks for roadtrips, etc.

@Philly-Bob: Good to se you back here.
Play any shuffleboard lately? Haha. Just kidding.

Going to see the Sheepdogs on Monday night and I'm pumped. Haven't been to a concert in a few years. This one was actually a last minute decision. Me and my buddy knew the Sheepdogs were coming to town but didn't know when and how much tickets were. 35 bucks though, can't go wrong there.

Yes, it's a circle jerk, but I always watch. Here are my predictions:

My predictions:
Best picture: 3 Billboards
Best actor: Gary Oldman
Best actress: Frances McDormand
Supporting actor: Willem Dafoe
Supporting actress: Allison Janney
Animated: Coco
Director: Jordan Peele
Doc: Icarus
Adapted Screenplay: Call My By Your Name
Orig Screenplay: Get Out

— Toronto Mike (@torontomike) March 4, 2018

Baseball was great yesterday. My Orioles, Indians, and Diamondbacks all won. That's wonderful. Basketball not so great. My Suns blew a game. My Nets lost. It was close, but they fricken lost. My Cavs better win tonight. I'm really worried about my Cavs.

March 5, 2018 @ 7:57 AM

@ Mike - you weren't too far off on your predictions....

March 5, 2018 @ 8:34 AM

I am a straight single woman who watched the Oscars on and off.

I wanted Get Out to sweep everythinggggggg. Glad Jordan did win one :)

And so happy that Coco won for song and best animated film.

March 5, 2018 @ 9:15 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

It was a tough year for predictions. I wasn't sure which pic would win best picture, but decided it would most likely be 3 Billboards. It wasn't.

My oldest son got that one, though. Nice to see a movie shot right here in Toronto win the big one!

March 5, 2018 @ 9:17 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

And that song was so key to the heart of Coco. That song had to work for Coco to get me balling.

But having said that, it was my 2nd choice for the Oscar. I would have picked Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens. It really worked magic in Call Me By Your Name and that gorgeous Italian countryside.

March 5, 2018 @ 9:27 AM

I know a lot of people loved Call Me By Your Name and that song - and to be fair, Coco was the only one I'd seen and heard. IT was a tough category this year for best song. But I still choke up when I sing each rendition of Remember Me

March 5, 2018 @ 9:34 AM

You have to respect Frances McDormand's passion and willingness to speak up, as well as her body of work in Hollywood.

But man oh man, that woman seems to be a whack job.

March 5, 2018 @ 10:26 AM

@ Sid - she did appear to be a little off last night, but you have to admire her passion. My favorite part was when she addressed Merryl Streep and said "if you stand up, everyone else will too!"

March 5, 2018 @ 10:59 AM

Sid_V - I totally rate her for that speech and asking all the women to stand up!!!

It seems MLSE will be "downsizing" BMO Field for Argo games. I assume that means closing off (hopefully not demolishing) parts of the stadium. When it looks like about 80% or more of the seats are typically empty for most games (in spite of whatever fictitious attendance number they announce to try to look better for sponsors),

I wonder how much of the stadium they will close off? If it's just about trying to look better on TV, they should probably only sell seats for the lower level on the east side, and only if and when they know it will be filled then gradually start opening up another section or two in other parts of the stadium.
FWIW, the seating map now on their website still shows them using the whole stadium.

March 5, 2018 @ 1:57 PM

Hmmm -- since your (and Mike's) mention of checking the IP addresses and a Stafford comment ("this is one of the stupidest threads I've read in a while") there -- strangely the flow of all those comments suspiciously expressing the same thought under supposedly different names would appear to have suddenly stopped.

It's definitely weird, I got the same vibe in the Joe Tilley/Lance Brown firings comment thread.

Not that it's the same person posting over and over again under different names, but it feels like a group of people who are familiar with each other and already post on another forum together. Then they wander here to bombard the comments as a way to overstate opposition to a media move and make it appear louder than it actually is.

It's basically the same opinion 150 times in a row.

Watching Jordan Peele go from the wacky improv dude who was in all those skits on Mad TV and Key and Peele to serious Oscar winning director guy is nuts!

One of the craziest pop culture transformations in recent memory and the biggest Oscar related surprise for me since Mo'Nique randomly won an Oscar all those years ago after being a sitcom actor and comedian for years.

March 5, 2018 @ 3:49 PM

Also, Kobe Bryant getting an Oscar in the midst of Hollywood trying to rehabilitate itself post-Weinstein is too perfect.

What a bunch of self-righteous, virtue signalling hypocrites.

March 5, 2018 @ 4:24 PM

Urooj Islam - it's wonderful that he has done so much in his career!!! Even Mo'Nique winning was wonderful, but she's been marked as 'difficult' and now esp with this Netflix fiasco - :/ I think she may be difficult, but they definitely tried to screw her over.

I also loved the Big Sick and wanted to see them win something, but hopefully they continue to make movies together and win an Oscar.

Despite them maybe being able to have found a way to make it look they're using different IP addresses, I have trouble believing it's really more than one person. It's not very likely there's an unrelated bunch of people who are all that obsessed about exactly the same 2 or 3 things in exactly the same way with exactly the same very distinctive personal dislikes, and all expressed in the same child-like manner. And there's also the stupidly-obvious attempts of trying to make them look different (hey, now I'll do or one or two of them with no punctuation, then I'll do one saying I agree with the name I used yesterday, etc.).
