Don Matthews, Dead at 77

Don MatthewsDon Matthews was 77. He was the head coach who won 231 games in the CFL, the second highest win total by a head coach in the league's history. He coached our Toronto Argonauts in 1990, from 1996-1998 and again in 2008, winning two Grey Cups.

Don was an amazing character in the league. He and Tie Domi were really good friends and I remember one or two exhibition games where Matthews dressed Domi and had him kick the point after to raise money for charity.

Best known for his time spent as an NHL tough guy, former Toronto Maple Leaf winger Tie Domi traded in his skates for football cleats during the ’96 and ’97 pre-seasons. Sporting his familiar number 28, Domi booted field goals for the Argos as a part of a fundraising effort for a local charity.
