To me...the Jays look unprepared and unfocused. I was hoping they would not sign Gibbons and instead look for a new voice and strategy that can take them to higher levels.

People who don't think TSN is heavily biased towards the Leafs better ignore the fact that Andersen was their 'Man of Stihl' last night despite well, you know.

Our 1-8 Blue Jays,....
After two seasons in the playoffs, my expectations for 2017 were high. However, we're in trouble, early.......

Back in the fall, I remember Aitkins saying that another proven outfielder was a priority. I also remember that he said the team needs to get younger, more athletic, and more versatile.

Sounded good to me. Always good to let the fanbase know what the plan is to improving the team. Perhaps we're now seeing why they wanted to get younger, more athletic and versatile.

Clearly, I felt the off-season was a failure: they didn't get the outfielder they needed; they didn't get younger, didn't get more athletic, but perhaps they got some versatility with Pearce, but hey, were 1-8 and it's still way too early.

Anyway, back to the off-season, nothing the Jays did got me excited about 2017.

As a paying customer, I decided to take a pass on the flex-pack for tickets - not that I would have bought tickets for April or May - my purchases would have been June, July & August, like I did for 2016.

Now, actually being 1-8 isn't a more damning indictment of the players than it is of Shapiro & Aitkins. Shapiro & Aitkins brought this team together, they settled for players who are not younger, not more athletic and not more versatile. Remember, they wanted change, but they couldn't close those types of deals.

So now we're stuck with the players that management settled for. Sucks that only one player (Barney) is hitting over .250 (Donaldson is but now on DL). But its time to start just getting some hits, some grounders, get on base, move the runner, can't wait for the deep ball. Bad hitting is bad hitting, batters need to make the changes.

Top of the 5th, we're up 3-2, with 5 hits, .... encouraging,.......

We'll know much better in July how bad this 1-8 start hurt the team. It's not impossible to go on a run and win 7, 8, or 9 games, it's been done, we just need to see some positive signs, sooner rather than later.

I put my jays cap in rally position yesterday, it will remain that way till they are at .500......

Quiet weekend on the blog so far...

I'm a little concerned about the Jays too, and even though it is still early, they just don't seem to have the winning playoff atmosphere about them. Now I know it is a 162 game sched, so things can change in a week or two, but the "it" factor is clearly non-existent at the moment.

I have a buddy who is a huge Habs fan. He can't stand the CBC/Rogers/TSN bias towards the Leafs, so he makes it a point of watching RDS so he can listen to the bias towards the Habs. Makes sense to me.

I just watched the Habs win in OT on Rogers Hockey and it was celebrated like Team Canada just won gold. I think Rogers was just so happy a Canadian team actually won a playoff game. That hasn't happened since 2015.

No cheating: What player has played the most playoff games the last 20 years? (Hint: he just surpassed Lidstrom)

Well, there's this open Mike. It was late. Anyway, my stupid knee. I tweaked it again. I don't know what I did, but it has pain, not it's worst, but there is some pain and it's down the right side of my right knee. Anyway, yes, Habs won game 2. The Rangers won the first game, but that's the only game they'll win. Habs will keep on winning so they get the cup. How about those Orioles. First place. They won again last night. My Indians didn't do so well. They rallied, but it wasn't enough. I'm worried about my Indians. Lonnie Chisenhall did hit a grand slam which was great. Oh, for my Orioles, Chris Davis, Seth Smith and JJ Hardy homered. My Diamondbacks lost another one. Basketball this afternoon. Go Cavs and go Bucks. I need them both to win.

HERE'S A TIMELY REMINDER: China and North Korea have "since 1961, been party to the Sino-North Korean Mutual Aid and Cooperation Friendship Treaty, whereby China is bound to render military aid by all means to North Korea against any outside attack. This treaty was extended twice and is currently valid until 2021"

Happy Easter/Passover to all. My family has never been particuliarly religious, but Good Friday/Easter Sunday has always been a chance for our immediate family to get together, and not feel the pressure of gift giving etc. that Christmas seems to have.
VOR, surprising the parts being salvaged from North Korea's rocket launch are traced to China.

Just watched April the giraffe give birth live at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz_errIBq3Y and it was awesome. The kids were mesmerized.

TM right off the bat with the winning answer. I think I heard he's at 202 playoff games. The Stars had a good run from 1997-2004 but I can't imagine a guy with consistent deep runs for 2 decades.

Just looking and I see that Russ Martin has 2 more hits for the 2017 season so far than I do.
One good reason why the Jays are sucking the big whun !

Today's date, back in 1912, the Titanic sunk.
My great grand-father and grandfather were carpenters for Harland & Wolff, they both worked on the Titanic during its construction.

That anonymous Blue Jays rant is mine.

1-9.
15 strikeouts.
Not even a single walk sought.
.... so it continues....

I am now collecting questions for Howard Berger. If you have a question for Howard, let me know and I'll ask it next week when he visits.

April 15, 2017 @ 5:45 PM

Justin

Some questions for Howard:

1. What is his most memorable story involving Pat Quinn? Which coach did he have the best relationship with and which coach did he have the worst relationship with?
2. Which Leafs player was the best interview?
3. How many Leafs games does he estimate he's been to in his life? (Berger was a season's ticket holder for many years before he became a beat reporter)
4. How did he come to accumulate is unimaginably large museum-like memorabilia collection? Is it merely a hobby or does he actively trade and sell memorabilia as a source of side income?
5. How did he navigate the tricky waters of being around the Leafs 24/7 while having to report on players and personnel objectively? Was it easy to have that job and keep strong personal relationships or did there have to be a certain degree of separation? Were any friendships ruined with players because of things he said or wrote?

Okay. I got my wish for basketball. My Cavs squeaked out a win winning by a point, one measly point. They better keep it going and win tomorrow. The Bucks also won. If my Cavs don't make it, I'm cheering for the Bucks. If they don't make it, then I will decide later who I want to win. My Orioles lost yesterday. That was not a good game at all. They better win today. My Indians played a great game and won. That was great. Lots of homers by Carlos Santana, Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall. Lonnie Chisenhall got activated from the DL and he is hot now so let's keep it going so my Indians can get back into first place where they belong. Hockey tonight. My Habs will win game 3. I'm telling you Habs are winning the cup. I don't know what happened to the Caps, but they lost last night and so it won't be Caps in four, it will be Caps in five, but Caps will win that series,. I know that, but no matter what happens, Habs are winning the cup. My knee is still sore. It sucks to have a sore knee. I do one little thing to it and it acts up.

Someone of importance at Rogers needs to tell the 'Mitchell Report Manalyst' he looks ridiculous with that facial hair.

Getting schooled by the Orioles is never a good feeling.

Baseball blowouts are inevitable, every team deals with them.
This one is just bad timing in that the Jays have to deal with their 1st so early in the season.

I was disappointed there was no momentum from yesterday's win.

Injuries occur on all rosters; 2/5 of the starting roster just adds more weight to a bad start. It also shortens the time frame the players have at their disposal to right the ship before Shapiro decides to step in start making personnel decisions.

I have little confidence in Shapiro.
I have zero confidence in Atkins, I view him merely as Shapiro's personal fart-catcher.

Finding some upside, today's 11 hits were encouraging.

Looking back:
1977, Blue Jays 1st season, April's record, 10-11.

Worst Aprils
1979: April record, 7-15.
1981: April record, 7-12.
2004: April record, 7-15.

Championship Aprils
1992: April record, 16-7.
1993: April record, 13-10.

No two ways about it,the Blue Jays are in deep shirt.
Truth is,a team cannot win a playoff spot in April but, that same team can loose a playoff spot in April.
Truth again, they won 2 games with 100 % healthy starting pitching . Now 2/5 th's of that healthy pitching is missing for the next Minimum 9 games.
Deep shirt.

Well, how about those Orioles. That's great. Yesterday's game was great. Lots of runs. How about Trey Mancini. He hit two of them. Craig Gentry hit his first. Manny Machado hit one. Dylan Bundy pitched great. There's nothing to worry about. My Diamondbacks won again as well. That was great. They didn't get swept. Indians is a different story. They lost. They can't score any runs. Indians need to win. They belong in first place, but they're not there. How about those Habs. Another win. It's the Stanley Cup Habs. They're not going to lose or maybe they lose a game here and there, but they won't lose a series. Habs are winning the cup. Caps will win the next three so Caps in five. Basketball tonight. My Cavs will win tonight. Bucks will win again tomorrow night. It will be Cavs and Bucks in the next round, I just know this. Knee is okay. Well, I have to live with it, but it does seem to be a bit better anyway.

April 17, 2017 @ 8:04 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Cavs squeaked out another one. It was a nailbiter, but they won. They will continue to win because they're awesome. The Bucks are going to win tonight. Come on. Let's go Bucks. Too bad about the Caps. That's no good. There goes Caps in five. They'll win it in six. Habs will win tonight. Habs are winning the cup. My Orioles had the night off. My Indians won. Great win but they're in last place and they don't belong in last place. Michael Brantley homered for my Indians. My Diamondbacks won as well. Five saves for Fernando Rodney. He's awesome. Jake Lamb homered again. He's so good.

I have a good feeling that if The Bucks were not playing The Toronto Raptors in the playoffs that Cheryl would not have even known Milwaukee had a pro basketball team.

Well, the Bucks didn't do so well last night. That sucks. They lost. Well, tomorrow my Cavs and Bucks will both win. Yes, they will. My Habs will also win tomorrow as well. They lost last night. That was no good because the series is all tied up, but it will be Habs in six. Caps will win tonight as well so that series will be tied up. Then Caps win in six. How about those Indians last night. Great game. Josh Tomlin pitched great. Homers were by Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Ramirez. My Diamondbacks also won. Shelby Miller is an awesome pitcher. Chris Ianetta and Yasmani Tomas homered. My Orioles not so good last night. That sucked. Oh well.

April 19, 2017 @ 7:44 AM

Beatts

It brought me great enjoyment seeing your Habs lose last night. :)

April 19, 2017 @ 8:03 AM

Cheryl

Well, the Caps won. That's good. It's going to be Caps in six. That was no good about my Habs losing, but my Habs can do it in six. Habs will win tonight. Also my Cavs and Bucks will win tonight. It will be Cavs in four and Bucks in five. My Indians got rained out last night. That means they didn't win. My Orioles won last night though. That was great, a very well pitched game by Ubaldo Jemeniz. My Diamondbacks lost though 1 to 0. That's no good. Zach Grienke pitched a gem and no run support. That sucks. Oh well.

April 20, 2017 @ 7:19 AM

Cheryl

I can't find the new open Mike so we will continue on this one. Anyway, my Habs lost. Never mind. This series is longer than I thought it would be. It will go seven games. Habs in seven. Caps will win tonight. Basketball was great last night. Great comeback win by my Cavs is so awesome. They were really losing badly at the half, but they won. Also the Bucks won really really big. Cavs and Bucks will make it. It's going to be Cavs in four and Bucks in five. My Orioles won as well. That's awesome with Jonathan Schoop hitting a home run. Also my Indians won as well. so they're hot. My Diamondbacks didn't win though. They lost again which is no good.
