Uninstall the Facebook App from your Smart Phone

I recently uninstalled the Facebook app from my Android phone, and all is well. In fact, things are better than ever. The Facebook app is a serious strain on the battery, even when you're not using it.

It turns out the mobile version of the Facebook website is just as good as the app. So I created a shortcut on my phone to the page for my custom Facebook list, which also allows me to conveniently bypass the Facebook algorithm. I highly recommend this, you can see more here.

So with a shortcut to the custom list page on facebook.com instead of the app, it's not only easier on my battery, it elimnates the need to install a second Facebook app for the Messenger. Easy peasy.

Further to this the app is notorious for high data usage. I kept noticing data crossing my network late at night when there could be no activity. The app seems to "call home" on a regular basis. The only app that is more intrusive is the Uber Android app.

Interesting that this entry showed up today. It's like you read my mind.

@ TripleZer0: I too was seeing odd late-night surges in my data usage while I was asleep. A quick Google search told me Facebook was maybe the culprit, and just yesterday I did exactly what Mike is recommending above. The mobile version is perfectly fine.

Can you still see if you have notifications that way?

Hey Mike,

Just had a look at your icons. Do you use Whatsapp? If so, good for you!

I wish the font could be made one size bigger but overall I get good use out of it.

Yes, you can still get notifications. In Chrome, go to Settings > Site settings > Notifications and making sure they're turned on and unblocked for Facebook.

Yes, I use Whatsapp. This screen cap is basically my most used apps (except for the Facebook shortcut which is to the mobile version of the site in Chrome)
