I remember Dominik from Q107 a few years back. I liked him, great radio voice

That's too bad. I'll miss Greg picking on clueless high school students.

March 18, 2014 @ 4:18 PM

Todd Shapiro called it on his Sirius-XM show (cryptically) on Episode 9 with Dustin Diamond. He said that "he heard that D Diamond is going to be the new morning man the old radio station" while he was talking to Dustin Diamond from Saved By The Bell. I wonder who Todd still talks do over there?

March 18, 2014 @ 4:32 PM

Max

Not bad, Corus. Not bad at all. I'm not familiar with Diamond, but his youtube video's seem entertaining enough. Big win for Beherall and Dye; well deserved. They were a little awkward together, but maybe Diamond as mediator can smooth it out. I just hope we move back to 5+ minute breaks instead of the the 2-ish minute ones.

Also great to see Melani permanently joining Fred. Co-hosted drive shows are a trend I'm happy to see return.

March 18, 2014 @ 4:34 PM

Rob

Interesting moves. Fred and Greg always felt like their more of a solo act. Be interesting to see how their radio personalities work with partners. Will it stifle their creativity or taper it appropriately?

Dominik Diamond? The guy off of Gamesmaster (legendary 80s/90s tv show)? Theres a blast from the past

March 18, 2014 @ 4:46 PM

Keith

All this means is Josie will now be annoying first thing in the morning opposed to later.

March 18, 2014 @ 4:47 PM

NightDiver

Josie Dye is the worst.

March 18, 2014 @ 4:57 PM

Kyle

Meh. The station has still lost me for the most part. I started drifting away long before the end of DBS due to the shit poor music and non-stop commercials. It's going to take more than a new morning show to pull me back from Indie88. I am sure Josie is a good person, but her voice grates my nerves. However, the only time I have laughed at a morning show recently was at her on with Greg. I'll reserve my judgement, but am not holding my breath.

March 18, 2014 @ 5:02 PM

Max

@Kyle Music/advertisements aside, the Indie Morning show is extremely generic and forgettable. And I'm sure the three of them are nice people too. It just seems strange hearing a CHFI-like morning crew on a station that plays (dare I say) edge-like music.

Dominick Diamond used to fill in for Derringer when he was on vacation. He was very good - in fact I always wondered if he was a little too good, because after a few such appearances he was suddenly gone. I couldn't help but think he might have been pushed, because the energy seemed a lot better than Derringers show, which seems pretty tired and basically on autopilot.

March 18, 2014 @ 5:14 PM

Kyle

Max, i absolutely agree with you. I am referring to the station in general. Yes, the Indie88 morning show is kinda blah, a little too Breakfast Television for my liking. However, I do like the guy who speaks the least, Matt Hart. That show has the occasional sign of life, and 9/10 times it's because of him. But Indie 88 has done a better job of putting proper DJs on air and focusing on one thing: music. The Edge seems like it has tried too hard with thr 'On air personality' types, the alpha made shock jock, the hottest chick in the high school, the nerd, etc. Basically, like all things that get too big, they try to be all things to everyone and in the end drive away their core customers by watering down their products with Mumford, Fun, etc.

March 18, 2014 @ 5:33 PM

meet again

At least the edge is finally settled on somebody permenant. Fred was terrible in the mornings and adam is a really bad DJ, so glad they are sticking him back on nights when no one listens.

I'll give the new show a listen (greg is very funny) but i'm still pissed that Dean was let go.

Speaking of Dean why ha there been no coverage on his huge comedy special coming up april 5th? Or the fact that his website now has a podcast section (nothing is there yet but clearly he will be returning in some form)

March 18, 2014 @ 5:34 PM

salad

Also, hopefully they let these guys talk and have a natural rythem, Fred and adams pre-recorded comedy bits were so bad. Fred would just set up then give the punchline and slam into commercials. Fred is a terrible person and DJ

@meet again

I didn't write about the comedy special because it didn't seem blog-worthy, but I did write about it in a recent Open Mike.

I also Tweeted about his podcast section, but until he says he has one, there's not really anything to report. Although I did write him an email about it, I just never heard back.

Spirit of Radio Sundays. Carlos coming back. Dominik Diamond. I like these changes so far. Now they have to work on the programming a bit.

March 18, 2014 @ 5:52 PM

Max

@Kyle Fair enough. A lot of Indie's music is refreshing. The edge really does feel like an alternative top 40 station, but I've come to accept it because they're clearly not going back.

@salad I hate the slam to commercials as well. It almost always feels incredibly forced and unnatural, and the one-liners aren't usually very funny anyway. Just seems like a cheap way out. That being said, it's not necessarily Fred's fault. He may just want to be able to say as much as he can in the little time allotted, so he has to rush the end a bit.

Hopefully the new show is given a little space to breath.

March 18, 2014 @ 5:53 PM

Gary

Sorry Kyle, but Indie seems to concentrate more on making sure they stick to a rigid repetitive loop than anything else.

Dominic had left Q for his own morning show out east I believe. I liked his show and actually did listen more attentively when he filled in For Derringer.

March 18, 2014 @ 6:39 PM

GUNTer

wow! I am shocked that Dominic is returning to the city so soon. My understand was that he (on his own, ie. not booted out) returned out east because him and his family loved it out there. That wasn't even too long ago - maybe one year?? I can't decide on him. Sometimes he annoys me.

On a totally different stream - I wish Q would get rid of Maureen Halloway. OMFG she is the worst. Derringer holds her up. When he is on vacay she is utterly unbearable. Go away 'Auntie Mo'.

That is all!

March 18, 2014 @ 7:05 PM

cori

I like indie88 but the morning show is a little canned. Candice's laughter every few moments drives me nuts. I like Matt's music news. Regardless, it's likely an improvement over Josie's voice.

Not a huge fan of the new lineup. Why so many co-hosts? I'll stick to talk radio-- people who know how to hold their own.

March 18, 2014 @ 7:33 PM

Tim

I am generally happy with these annoucements. I do, however find Greg Beharrel very irritating and condescending. I hope Dominic can put him in his place. I think it would be great if they hated each other and continually slagged each other off.

March 18, 2014 @ 8:48 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Would sometimes catch Dominik Diamond on Q107 and didn't mind him. Might be worth checking out in the mornings on the Edge. Can't stand Beharrell though.

March 18, 2014 @ 8:56 PM

Matt

What were the circumstances behind Dominik leaving Q107? Must've been mutual if corus bought him back again.

Glad Adam got his own show. Always enjoy his shows.

Edgeumacated

Cue the daily passive aggressive Humble + Fred banter

H: No one on the radio is as good as us who are not on the radio except when we are, because we once did that job
F: You would think that with all the options out there these... I shouldn't say anything
H: What, you mean that we couldn't have done a better job?
F: I, I, just shouldn't say anything, forget it
H: Where is our fat Asian boy who loves licking twats?

The lonely widows listening to CFRB at 1am love this stuff!

March 18, 2014 @ 9:18 PM

Max

@Edgeumacated Bit of an unnecessary jab, don't you think? Especially the bit about lonely widows listening to CFRB at 1am.

H&F's show runs on several different outlets at morning afternoon, and late-night. They also a podcast that people listen to at whatever time they might feel the urge to do so. The CFRB audience is just a fraction of their listenership. But you seem to be pretty familiar with the show's content, so you already knew that, didn't you? Or did you catch it on CFRB?

March 18, 2014 @ 10:25 PM

Corey

What is this weird phenomenon that happens around H&F comments? It always seem to go like this: a first-time poster with a clever name will make a negative comment about H&F, and then another poster that has never posted here will suddenly appear and rush to defend them. What is this all about?

March 19, 2014 @ 6:53 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Corey -

Edumacated = Fred

Max = Humble

...just a theory

March 19, 2014 @ 8:15 AM

I have no idea who those people are.

Well, I know Josie Dye but Diamond and this other guy. No clue who they are.

I guess it doesn't help that I haven't listened to the station since Jason left..was fired...pissed off Dean or whatever the story is.

March 19, 2014 @ 8:27 AM

Aurora Bob

GUNtr... have to agree with you on the Q morning show. The whole thing is awful.

1. Before the 6:00am start, they play "greatest bits" from the previous show. Guess what, they were lame yesterday, they are lame now.

2. Ryan and Flairboy do nothing but yell into the mics to be heard - usually with a stupid foreign accent - and JD laughs and laughs.

3. Mo.... I can read the entertain pages for a last week and provide just as much information as she does.

4. The scripted banter is so predictable it hurts.

March 19, 2014 @ 8:44 AM

Aurora Bob

Forgot to mention....

I enjoyed Dominik on the Q and when he did the morning show it was a MUCH better morning show. I think that Corus allowed him to move East because he was not going to go anywhere else as long as JD was breathing. Bringing him back for The Edge is a good move.

March 19, 2014 @ 8:46 AM

Ryan G

Haven't heard of this Dominik Diamond. Sounds very 80's ish for some reason, but only maybe cuz I think there was a club called the diamond?

Anyway, I have heard a few tweaks to Edge's lineup, but my jaw dropped when I heard Flock of Seagulls yesterday afternoon. Yes. Flock of Fucking Seagulls.

March 19, 2014 @ 9:18 AM

Tim

Check Dominic on youtube. He is a Scot and does game reviews. He is very funny and quick witted. I guess Josie gives the girls a voice. She is not the sharpest pencil in the box but harmless. Beharrel is brutal but anybody is better than Fred.

March 19, 2014 @ 9:56 AM

Michael

Wow, they had a fake scottish accent when Jason Barr used to do his Dangerboy character, now they have the real thing.

March 19, 2014 @ 10:21 AM

markosaar

@Philly-Bob,

You clearly don't actually listen to H+F.

March 19, 2014 @ 10:28 AM

Watched a couple of short vids of DD. Meh.

March 19, 2014 @ 10:41 AM

Anna

I'm willing to give the new show a try, but the way Josie tries so hard...is she like this with her friends? They way she over-pronounces each word and changes the tone of her voice so often? I wish someone taught her to talk to her listeners with the intimacy and connection that one tries to get with people one on one. It feels like she's "on" all the time. I think she's a nice person and with a little "retraining" she could be great.

March 19, 2014 @ 10:47 AM

Max

@Corey It was a completely unnecessary and off-topic remark, so I couldn't help but bite back. I probably should have ignored it but it was so incredibly ignorant that I could not. I dont have an agenda, I'm not doing HF PR and I'm not a first time poster either. (See some of my earlier posts in this very article.)

No, not actually.

The big news here is the return of Carlos. Maybe my favourite DJ from the Edge era.
I got to listen to him a lot when he was on DAVE in Kitloobridge, and I'd occasionally catch him on the Beat (their music wasn't my thing, but they had great chemistry).

Glad he's back. I might tune in once or twice.

I think I'd be better able to tolerate Josie Dye if she had an operation to open up her nasal passages. It would do wonders for her voice.

It's good to see someone who has paid her dues elsewhere in radio, like doing time in Prince Rupert, BC, and doing whatever is asked of her filling in shifts get a break. Good on Melani for becoming half of what is now the afternoon drive team. I'm still more likely to be listening to 88.1 on my radio, though.

Since I'm in the office, I'm streaming an alt-rock station, as usual. Today it's Victoria, BC's The Zone: http://cjzn.streamon.fm/ Give it an ear or two, you might like it.

March 19, 2014 @ 11:22 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Mark - Nope, I don't. However Corey's observation was spot on, and I felt like having some fun with it. I have nothing against Mr.'s Patterson and Howard, quite the contrary, they made my bus ride to school most morning's in the 90's.

...jeez crack one joke....

March 19, 2014 @ 11:32 AM

@Mike,
That's awesome.
Carlos seems like a great guy.

Let me know when it comes up, I have a few questions I'd love to contribute.

March 20, 2014 @ 9:59 AM

b Dot

I received a call to participate in a survey which was to do with Toronto radio.
Once i had started i quickly realized it was zero'ing in on Ciss 92.5 rating there on air talent and programming, which i was quick to duck as i have never listened to that station, it then took a b-line to Dean Blundell, "If Blundell came back to Toronto radio, would you be inclined to listen?" alone with many more questions regarding him.
Interesting if there is any correlation to both of the above or simply a coincidence??

March 24, 2014 @ 1:38 PM

Greg Beharrell is just awful. Josie is better on her own. This is going to be a train wreck.

March 24, 2014 @ 8:21 PM

Aurora Bob

Oh boy... Derringer is trotting out the "Tour of the Neighbourhood" promotion again........ We just finished the stupid one second game and now they bring this one out again.

March 25, 2014 @ 4:21 PM

Max

Seems the edge is doing a little rebranding. Their tag-line has changed from "Toronto's new-rock," to "Toronto's alternative."

I doubt this change is foreshadowing a readjustment in format though. They probably just changed it because

a.) A massive chunk of their playlist no linger qualifies as "rock."

b.) They want to close in on Indie 88.1.

March 26, 2014 @ 10:52 AM

JJ

Close in on indie88? Indie 88 is hardly lighting up the ratings. As for the the programming they play 90 percent the same music as the edge so that's a wash. I still don't understand how non-stop Serena Ryder, Coldplay, Foo Fighters Metric, etc...is a refreshing change.

April 4, 2014 @ 10:44 AM

Hugh Jorgan

Im sure Josie Dye is a really really nice person. That being said, being a really nice person does not mean you should be on the radio. She is by far the worst on air personality Ive ever listened to. HOW DID SHE GET ON THE MORNING SHOW!? The Dean Blundell show was pretty bad it's last few months on the air, and I didint think Radio could get much worse, I was wrong. Its disturbing that people with zero talent can advance so far in their respective industry.

April 10, 2014 @ 9:29 AM

markosaar

Ugh what's she doing on radio? She has a face for TV!

April 10, 2014 @ 9:41 AM

steve

the DBS wasn't the greatest near the end but the new morning show sucks so bad, I've switched to 97.7

April 18, 2014 @ 8:44 AM

James Tea

DBS show was the final bit of radio I listened to. After Dean was gone it was a train wreck and was brutal. I do miss it.

Diamond, Dye, Beharrell need to find chemistry and rhythm to make it flow, that'll be tough with the uninteresting/unfunny josie, random Diamond, and weird/lame Beharrell. Honestly the worst morning show I've ever heard. I found it mostly annoying on all accounts.

Edge 102.1 really doesn't want to compete in the radio industry, same music over and over again, terrible hosts.

PLEASE someone give a suggestion of the best morning show out now, anywhere. The app tunein picks up shows from around the world or sirius radio.

May 2, 2014 @ 5:03 PM

steve

biggs and barr ain't bad considering whats on the air at the moment but that isn't saying much. definetly not as good as Dean,Jason,Todd in their prime. Toronto morning shows really suck at the moment at least 97.7 plays music that features wierd instruments called guitar, bass, drums.

May 3, 2014 @ 6:35 PM

Anyone know where Dominik, Josie and Greg have disappeared to?
