I retract my comments about the flu shot last open Mike. I haven't had flu shot in 5 years with no problems until this week. Been off work for 3 days feeling like crap.

At least I'll be able to work on my NHL draft today which is tonight.

If you have bird feeders in your backyard and it snows make sure to shovel under them.
Birds like to see bare grass to scrounge for the seeds dropped from the feeders.

January 18, 2013 @ 9:11 AM

Victoria

Great tip about bird feeders!

And dale, you really should get the flu shot. It doesn't make you invincible, but it definitely helps!

Who here is excited about the NHL this weekend?

I'll admit it. I'm very much looking forward to watching the Leafs and Habs on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night.

I'm actually wearing my Optimus Reim shirt to my son's 11th birthday party tomorrow.

January 18, 2013 @ 9:29 AM

Argie

I would be excited about the NHL returning if Toronto had a decent team. They've done nothing to improve this team which nose dived late in the season under Carlyle. Yes, they weren't much better under Wilson but the way they finished the season, gives me no hope.

Unlike other teams who signed key players and traded to upgrade, the Leafs did nothing thanks to a distracted GM who put his energies elsewhere. Thankfully, that useless GM is now gone.

So to recap, no I'm not excited about the season starting.

There's almost no Licks left in the GTA. Which is too bad. They have some good burgers. And The Dish just gave them a thumbs up: Licks' turkey burger deserves its health halo: The Dish

I know there's a Lick's on The Queensway... west of Kipling I think.

I agree, it definitely looks like we'll miss the season again, but it'll still be fun to watch the action and hope for the best.

And if Reimer plays well, or Scrivens, ya never know...

I cried on the subway today. For some reason, I started thinking about the Sandy Hook murders and I just welled up and tears streamed down my cheeks. I have three sons (ages 8, 6 and 4) and this event has truly shook me. I cannot believe there is a debate about what to do with the school: to refurbish it or demolish it. Why wouldn't this building simply be demolished? I cannot fathom any parent wanting his/her child to go back to that school.

January 18, 2013 @ 9:52 AM

Lorne

@Elba: If you plowed under any site where there'd been a tragedy, we'd run out of real estate and land real fast.

I don't think literally burying the memories will help anyone heal.

In sports,
1) Ottawa Red Blacks? Ottawa Reformers would have been a good football team name.
2) "It's Not About the Bike". Is the ironically titled Lance Armstrong biography book now worth anything?
3a) Out of the 1,000 Leafs home opener free tickets - did anyone else expect to find a modest (social media) Leafs ticket giveaway here today? Or maybe just free scarves for next week?
3b) I'm still praying for a pre opening game puck-drop waffle toss this Monday.

Any hopes or illusions I had about the fans finding something else to do for the next couple of years are just that - hopes and illusions. This will be a big hockey weekend and the sheep - er, fans - will lap it up.

Unfortunately, I got caught up in the Burke firing too, so it had peaked my interest. As for watching on Saturday, probably not, but that's not out of protest. I just have other things to do.

I remember Licks. That was a GOOD burger!

January 18, 2013 @ 11:28 AM

Geoff

I didn't even realize the Licks on Eglinton had closed.

January 18, 2013 @ 11:32 AM

The one on Eglinton was my favourite. Too bad.

You bet I'll be watching tomorrow or should say listening. I get my Habs and coyotes broadcasts on the net and I will be listening tomorrow night. Well, cheer for a good team, my Habs or Coyotes. They will both win. Good to have some hockey back finally. My Suns lost another one last night by four measly points. I'm tired of them losing and losing. It sucks.

January 18, 2013 @ 1:00 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Cheryl, if you're cheering for a good team, you'd better find someone besides the Habs or Coyotes to cheer for then.....

January 18, 2013 @ 1:27 PM

Blind Dave

@Mississauga Phil

Yeah, and in this case, Wile E. Coyote would be an appropriate logo for both teams!

Regarding Licks....they never really kept up with the gourmet burger places that have opened up in the last few years.

Licks still uses frozen french fries that taste like cardboard sticks while others serve amazing fresh cut fries. This alone cheapens the whole experience.

For those looking for something other than hockey to watch this weekend, the Rock have their home opener Saturday night at the ACC. I am not an employee, but I do have season tickets. It's nice to go to a sporting event where it's not too expensive for kids to go.

January 18, 2013 @ 3:20 PM

dale

Love the Rock & go to a few games every year.

Best sporting event in Toronto for the price & put on a great entertaining show & also have a great team.

January 18, 2013 @ 3:32 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I've never been to a Rock game nor seen a game (match?) on TV.

It's nothing personal, I just didn't grow up around the sport and don't appreciate it the way I probably should.

January 18, 2013 @ 3:34 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Mike - Did not grow up around Lacrosse at all either. however, a buddy gave me a couple of Rock tix a few years ago. I've gone to at least 1 game a year ever since. I'd highly recommend checking it out...it really is a good time.

January 18, 2013 @ 4:26 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Which would be the better time: Rock or Marlies?

January 18, 2013 @ 4:31 PM

Derrick

I didn't grow up playing lacrosse either but I went to a few games and had a blast. There are lots of kids there (both actual kids, and adults acting as kids), lots of scoring, and the team isn't half bad most of the time.
I would recommend the Rock if only because it's at the ACC and easier to get to then Ricoh Coliseum.

January 18, 2013 @ 4:43 PM

Cheryl

Well, this is it. My Habs and Coyotes are great teams. They will win more than the Leafs, that's for sure. Believe me they will.

January 18, 2013 @ 4:45 PM

You know what really grinds my gears? .... When you go to pick up a take-out order and they have a 'tip' option when you pay by credit or debit. Why??? I am driving over to pick it up and they want us to tip them??

January 18, 2013 @ 4:56 PM

Geoff

Does Licks still "sing" your order (I don't know what else to call it) in that really painful way?

Is the Brian Burke / Hazel Mae rumour true?

I saw you tweeted about it.

January 18, 2013 @ 6:10 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Leafs Fan

If I had a decent source that it was definitely true, I'd have blogged about it.

The fact is, all I have are several people with flimsy hearsay speculation.

Like my buddy from The Score who told me the whole story but admits there's no proof.

Or an email from someone who has a friend at MLSE. The rumour about Burke is everywhere, but that doesn't make it true. It's not fair to Burke or Hazel Mae to treat such scandalous speculation as fact.

So to answer your question, I don't know if the Brian Burke / Hazel Mae rumour is true.

January 18, 2013 @ 6:14 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Oh... and a source I trust assures me this rumour is not true.

Did Brian Burke get fired for hnocking up Spotrsnet's Hazel Mae.??? I heard this back in July. I thought it was gossip then. But now I have to wonder. THe guy who told me said it was a reliable source.hmmmmmmm....

@ Anonymous: I read this last week on my car club forum, http://gtamc.com/showthread.php?117180-Brian-Burke-Fired-the-real-reason complete with the misspelling of "Brain Burke". This seems to be gaining some legs as a smoking hot rumour.
I thought i wouldn't be sucked back into watching the NHL, but will be looking for a bar in Moncton Saturday night to watch this first game launch. I feel very cheap and ashamed of my behaviour on this act LOL.
Will give your 21st a listen this weekend Mike.

Never cared for Lick's. I thought those burgers were waaay overrated - too much garlic and other seasonings mixed into a "meh" patty. I'm picky about my burgers - people look at me sideways because I have the nerve to say that Weber's is average at best. Best burger I've had in Toronto is from the Burger's Priest. I've heard good things about Dangerous Dan's too, but never tried.

January 19, 2013 @ 7:51 AM

Cheryl

Never cared for Licks much either. That singing your order drove me nuts. I used to like LIme Rickey's for burgers. They were great, but no longer around. Anyway, 11 hours until hockey. I can't wait. Habs 6 Leafs 1. That will be the score.

January 19, 2013 @ 8:09 AM

J9

Also never a Licks burger fan (too thick, too pink in the middle) - although they were one of the first to have veggie burgers back, which was great for my vegetarian hubby and kids.

Hero burgers, however, are fantastic.

January 19, 2013 @ 8:57 AM

Blind Dave

@Cheryl

Habs 6, Leafs 1

Have you mentioned this to the Habs, so at least they know?

January 19, 2013 @ 12:18 PM

2 things I won't admit to my friends. I watch young and restless, and I eat the odd big Mac. If you are ever constipated a big Mac will do the trick......

January 19, 2013 @ 1:02 PM

Matt

Love Lick's Burgers. That mayo is what keeps me coming back though.

They've closed 2 that I know of in Brampton.

Never had my order sung either lol.

January 19, 2013 @ 2:14 PM

Rosie

I would take a Big Mac over a Lick's burger any day. Right now my fave burger place is Woody's Burger on the Lakeshore. Am excited to try Burger's Priest, still haven't been.
I used to work with this guy who worked out like crazy, ate super-healthy six days a week, then once a week ate McDonald's breakfast and then a Big Mac- he swore it blasted everything terrible out of his system. Ew LOL! He did have a great body though

January 19, 2013 @ 2:50 PM

Argie

I always liked Licks' burgers. What can I say, I love garlic!

As for the singing, I looked at it as great customer service. The employees always seemed like they were having a good time - to me as a customer, that's a good thing.

January 19, 2013 @ 3:21 PM

@ Anonymous

If that is true....Wow!

Wait a minute, here.
Hockey returns, the CBC is airing the first game from Winnipeg (vs. Ottawa) to probably a more interested audience than usual. The host arena and its team, owned by CTV-Globe and Mail aligned David Thomson has a TSN ADVERT right behind the goaltender's net???
What next, the game gets sponsored by GM or Ford, and the Zamboni is to be painted like a Honda or a Volkswagon?

If I were the CBC, I'd blackout the rest of this game. They deserve better; they paid for better.

January 19, 2013 @ 4:29 PM

Corey

I liked Damien Cox's opening remark in his column today,"So the NHL season that some firmly believed would never happen is happening, and early indications are the fans are going to be more than happy to welcome 30 teams and 700 players back with open arms.

Might as well schedule that next lockout for Sept. 15, 2020. There will be, it seems, no repercussions for the league or the players union for holding the game hostage while they bickered."

Totally agree.

@CQ - CBCs contract with the NHL runs out after next year. I doubt this time around they'll be able to compete against the unholy Bell/CTV or Rogers, thus ending the 50+ year tradition of Hockey Night in Canada.

January 19, 2013 @ 5:51 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Corey

At least we don't have to worry about it until 2020.

January 19, 2013 @ 5:52 PM

Corey

@Mike - we wouldn't have to worry about it then if the fans were smart enough to keep away this "season".

January 19, 2013 @ 6:05 PM

@Corey

I just caught the 3rd period of the Flyers vs. Pens.

Now I'm settled in anticipating the Leafs vs. Habs.

This damn league brings me way too much joy and pleasure. My girl is excited, my kids are excited, my brothers are excited... our game and team is back.

As much as I hated the lock-out and all it deprived us of, to boycott the league this season would only hurt us. I'm just not hurt and angry enough to do that.

January 19, 2013 @ 6:23 PM

Rick C in Oakville

Lots of Licks out here in Oakville, 3 I know of. I always liked their burgers, different to all the rest at one time. The Guck is the best Mayo, nice and garlicky. I load mine up until it is bursting with add ons. Feeling kind of hungry now.

January 19, 2013 @ 8:02 PM

Cheryl

My Habs lost. That game sucked. First a very long ceremony. The ceremony sucked and the game sucked because my habs lost. Then my Coyotes lost. Not a good opening night at all.

January 20, 2013 @ 8:08 AM

Corey

@Mike - why would a boycott only hurt us? Short term pain for long term gain. I'll point to MLB as the prime example again. Hasn't been a strike or lockout since the fans walked out on them after the 94-94 strike. Previous to that, every time negotiations took place, there was a strike or lockout. Now they get together early to hash out the CBA and come to an agreement on time, like professionals. I understand this next one is primarily completed, way ahead of schedule. Won't happen in the NHL as long as they know they can use the fans as pawns.
I didn't watch last night. Felt good.

January 20, 2013 @ 8:40 AM

4x4 Time

Does anyone in Sport beat out Lance Armstrong as the worst cheater and villan..Roger Clemons, Pete Rose, Mark McQuire, Ben Johnson???

January 20, 2013 @ 10:40 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@4x4 Time

I'd give the nod to Lance. Then Bonds and Clemons.

January 20, 2013 @ 10:58 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@4x4 Time: Marty sums up what I have been feeling about the current music scene.
It has become like a manufacturing machine, that pairs up the vocally talented with writing talented. The stuff my daughter listens too all sounds the same, but then my dad couldn't stand the wailing of Robert Plant either.

January 20, 2013 @ 2:43 PM

Cheryl

Well, so that's why baseball doesn't get locked out. I would love another baseball lockout. Baseball is such a boring game. There's no action. I hope I'll like playing it better than watching it. If not, then I'll sell the ball and glove to anyone who wants it and make a little money. I wonder how much I'll get for it anyway, but I'll wait until the warm weather first and then try it.

January 20, 2013 @ 3:49 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Mike - I've been to multiple Rock games, as a few Marlies games...honestly I had more fun at the Rock. They aren't a big market team, and don't try to be, however, the people who are there, really want to be there and make the noise, and the team seems to genuinely appreciate their fans.

January 21, 2013 @ 9:59 AM

Cheryl

Well, Leafs lost last night. My Habs play tonight. They play Florida. Go Habs.
