Finding a New Bottom in Leafsville

LeafsI had stopped watching Leaf games. Prior to tonight, the last game I watched was the game I took my son to a couple of weeks ago. Total and complete apathy had set in... the 2011-12 Leafs were dead to me.

Then, Ford Canada invited me to their luxury suite and 3rd row seats at the ACC to watch the Leafs vs. Flyers. Suddenly, I'm not only watching the Leafs again, but I'm at ice level, unable to turn the channel.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's far worse than I had imagined. It seems we've found a new bottom, if that's possible. Jussi Rynnas got no support in his first career start, the Leafs only managed to get 17 shots on net and the fans only showed passion when chanting "Let's Go Blue Jays", which also happened to be the highlight of the night, or when booing the home team, which began early in the first period.

Mr. Rynnas, you're ready for your closeup

This team has no pride. In this lifelong fan's opinion, things are as bad now as they were under JFJ's watch, and that's saying something. It hurts to watch.

I was comfortably numb in my apathetic state until Ford Canada woke me up. Now I've seen the carnage for myself and it's ugly. Toronto ugly.

But the song said the Leafs are the best.

I hate when people lie to me in song.

This team is so lousy that I'm left wondering if this is even NHL-calibre hockey. How can we even keep the bulk of these players? What kind of message would that send, "don't worry, you'll do better next year"?

That's fine for kids, but not professional sports. If we had a soccer-style system, this team would be out of the top league and playing with the smaller cities and towns. Though we'd probably have multiple teams and be able to savour success more often and shift allegiances.

Yet idiots STILL fill the seats.

Someone else said, but it's worth repeating.

This is NOT a hockey town. It's a Leafs town.

If you put Leafs jerseys on toasters, people would still park their asses in the seats, and drop $200 to do it.

Oddly, I feel hatred for Ford Canada after reading this.

Oh, it must be because they are associated with that Leafs brand. They invited Mike out for free, and then Mike writes about it, citing their brand name twice, for good measure.

As a result I now offically associate sub par, half-ass quality with Ford Canada.

I hate you Ford. I hate you.

Hey Mike--- Did any chants of ---- FIRE BURKE --- break out during the game.

March 30, 2012 @ 8:08 AM

MIssissauga Phil

My Father lived through the Ballard years and still cheered for the leafs...bear in mind that this was a time when the owner of said Leafs would often say in public "why would I spend money to make the team better?? I can't sell any more tickets than I already do."

Yeserday I called my Dad to bitch about this game and he said that he hasn't watched a leafs game in 3 weeks!!!! I realize, not knowing my dad, that this may not mean as much to you as it does to me, but trust me when I say that anyone who knows him thought he'd be the last surviving leafs fan.

CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN BURKE - You have done what even Harold Ballard could not, get my old man to give up on the Leafs!

March 30, 2012 @ 8:11 AM

And then next season, after a spectacular pre-season, we'll all hop on the Leaf band wagon again...with thoughts that this is the year and planning for the Stanley cup parade down Yonge...

We do this year after year after year without fail

No chants of Fire Burke that I could hear.

"Let's Go Blue Jays" was the big one... got super loud in the third.

In any other business, Burke would have been shown the door long ago.
BRING A TEAM TO MARKHAM...HAMILTON..DOWNSVIEW ..I DON'T CARE WHERE !! I may always be a leaf fan, but there is nothing better for a business than competition !

The best part is I now refer to them as Ford Canada, so people don't think it was Rob Ford who took me to the game.

Here's an interesting CTV report on the Leafs:

"Let's go Blue Jays?" Rogers can't even get their Stadium Name right (postcard photo entry):

That's probably a knockoff postcard... not Rogers' fault.

I was at the Philly-Leafs game last night, my brother got free tickets and I decided to take in my first Leafs game at the ACC.

It's one thing to loose, it's another thing not to show up, which unfortunately is what the Leafs did. The only Leafs that seemed to put forth an effort were Liles, Grabovski, Brown and Rosehill (although he did take some undisciplined penalties).

At this point what can Carlyle even do? The players aren't picking up their assignments, poor linechanges, not coming back hard after making a mistake. Most of the goals scored last night were due to these mistakes and unfortunately, Phaneuf and the other leaders/veterans haven't done enough to hold their teamates accountable.

If I were Burke, I'd be really ticked off and I would re-evaluate who is committed and get personel/leadership into the dressing room.

@TorontoMike 12:25
Yeah... there's a huge blackmarket in under a dollar fake postcards - sold in multiple locations.

March 30, 2012 @ 2:38 PM

You gave up on your Leafs. Well, I gave up on my Habs for this year. Why should I care. My Habs are lousy. They fired their manager, Pierre Gauthier. That's awful. Hockey stinks this year and I hate baseball. Oh well, I need summer weather so I can play tennis again.

March 30, 2012 @ 6:14 PM

In my 50+ years of life I've never ever seen as team QUIT as the Leafs have the last while, even under Ballard in the 70's-80's. Absolute JOKE.

There is NO leadership, compassion or HEART from almost all the players. Always same conversion after each game "We have to play better". WELL DO IT DAMMIT.

Dion & Phil are lost since Carlyle took over. At least Komisarik tried to stand up
for the team taking on Lucic against Boston.

Burke's free agent signings are TERRIBLE. The more this CRAP goes on, it seems it wasn't Ron Wilson that was the problem as at least he won until early Feb. Ronnie, you did your best with these classless players & enjoy your time off with next years salary. I'm not blaming Carlyle as he has tried but the players have given up.

The Leafs have the largest & most paid management staff in all of the NHL by far. What have they done.

This off season is the ticking BOMB, either the fuse is pulled or it goes off.
Burke make sure you have you Flak jacket on.

Go Sens Go

Forgot to mention my son won 2 tickets to Leafs game tomorrow against Buffalo & sold them as he didn't want to go. He loves hockey but not shinny.

He made himself $150.00 for nose bleed seats.

March 30, 2012 @ 7:05 PM

We're in the same boat. Just checked on how my Habs are doing. The Rangers are beating them 2 to 0. Terrible terrible.

March 30, 2012 @ 9:25 PM

I watched the CTV youtube video Mike posted above. I understand the players may be upset, but their responses to the questions were absolutely sickening. No accountability whatsoever. Not to each other and certainly not to the fans. Absolutely disgusting.

March 30, 2012 @ 9:55 PM

Toronto is 'loserville'

March 31, 2012 @ 12:01 AM

willie D wonka

hmmm, i think they have been secretly told to crash and burn to get a lottery pick. That pick plus a package deal including kessel to land Nash in the off season. Sorry sound like Vito the leaf fan here. Honestly firing wilson was bad timing should have let him ride out the season then hire a new coach in the off season. I lived through the Ballard days, people need to realize that this is a young rebuilding team that over acheived in the 1st half of the season. This is reality, there is much more rebuilding needed.

March 31, 2012 @ 12:01 PM

Willie, this isn't a young over achieving team. The Oilers are a young over achieving team.

The owners of the Leafs have demonstrated for decades that "fan satisfaction" is low on their list of priorities. Ballard was at least blunt and honest enough to admit that he can't sell more seats so why bother to skate a good team.

What I'm going to say will probably start a flame war, but it's the truth........

Leaf fans are the teams worst enemy. They perpetuate failure. The fans blindly support the Leafs even when they completely suck. And if anyone that's elsewhere in Canada ridicules the Leafs, fans jump all over that person. Fans also come across as delusional. Let the Leafs get on a winning streak and suddenly there is talk about "planning the parade". Absolute arrogance.

I live in Calgary and word is the Flames won't make the playoffs. My answer is who cares. I get offered free tickets regularly and I turn them down. I certainly am not going to support a team of sub-par losers that can't even make the first round of the playoffs. I'm not going to the pub to watch the games. I'm not buying a jersey. I'm not buying tickets. I'm not accepting free tickets. And if enough people did that, the team would have no support and they'd win again. Same for the Leafs.

Boon is part of the problem. He's EXACTLY what is wrong with Leaf fans. He spouts off how much they suck, blah blah blah, but give him free tickets & up goes a big write up.

March 31, 2012 @ 3:05 PM

I agree with Irvine that Leaf fans are the team's (and their own) worst enemy.

I think part of the problem, other than blind stupidity, is the fear of giving up those cushy season tickets. I don't know how long the waiting list is, probably years and years, but you know Murphy's Law -- those damned Leafs will get good again as soon as the season tickets are given up and gone forever.

It's a sad statement but I believe it to be true. Remember when the Jays were the hot ticket in the early 90s? My brother had season tickets in the early 80s, the lean and mean early years. So one year he decided not to renew. By the time they won the World Series, he'd have had seats pretty close to home plate had he kept up the subscription.

Even though the Leafs played well last night, I'd have loved to have seen an empty arena. I realize that most seats are already payed for anyway, but a few crickets chirping to break the silence would send one hell of a message to this "team".
