Asterix and Obelix

Asterix and Obelix

During my web travels last night, I stumbled upon a clever and simple Lego ad that brought back  flood of memories.  Here's that ad.

I saw the ad and instantly saw my old friends Asterix and Obelix.  When I was a kid, I would save my allowance until I had the $5 required to buy another issue of Asterix and Obelix from a book store on Markham Street across from Honest Ed's.

This was the early-to-mid 80s, and I have no idea how I discovered Asterix and Obelix, but I loved those books about a village of Gauls who resist Roman occupation thanks to a magic potion brewed by their druid.

Initially, I assumed most English-speaking Canadians were into Asterix and Obelix, but eventually discovered that they were pretty obscure in this neck of the woods.  They're huge in Europe, but an English-speaking Canadian kid was always more likely to read Tintin than Asterix.  I tried Tintin, but always missed my pals Asterix and Obelix.

Did anyone else read volumes of Asterix comics?
