Open Mike (Hot Friday Edition)

Published by Toronto Mike on July 22, 2011 @ 08:12 in Open Mike

microphoneIt's not only another hot Friday, but it's the day Bev goes on a date with a Toronto Mike reader. We'll hear all about that soon, but now it's time to get things off your chest...

Use the comments of this entry to discuss that, or anything you want. The hosting is on me...

here's something that drives me nuts about tim hortons.

oftentimes the guy or gal working at the cash is so pre-occupied with serving as many people as possible, he will call the next person in line, only to not truly be ready for that next person.

on several occasions the employee has called me, yet there's still his previous customer(s) standing there in the spot where the present customer is supposed to be standing. so, i have to then sort of speak over the people to get my order in, and me no likes doing that.

also, several times they've called me from the line wanting to take my order, only to turn to start a new pot of coffee or talk to another employee. many times i've been called and start giving my order and dude's not even paying attention because he's decided to knock off some other quick task or have a brief chat with a colleague.

i get why they do it. they want to keep the line going to maximize the day's cha-ching, but i find that a lot of these employees go into robot mode (we are, after all evolving into robots as per my earlier posting), and who wouldn't after slugging coffees for 8 hours. they're metaphorically ankle-chained and whipped by the owner/manager to suck in every last nickel they can.

must be a tough gig though. stay in school kids, stay in school...

Well said, Ryan G.! My daughter worked at Timmy's last year. She only lasted a few months due to the very things you stated above. She is now waitressing at a local restaurant that serves great food and properly looks after the customers. She enjoys it and finds it much for fulfilling.

I am very disappointed at how our local Timmy's treat their staff. Though I give my girl credit. She wrote it off as a valuable, early work experience, holds no grudges, and still buys her coffee there every morning.

@Irvine. Freddie P is indeed a casualty: http://www.mykawartha.com/opinion/columns/article/1047033--over-the-back-fence-july-22

Now we have both Humble and Fred out looking for new gigs - at the same time. Let the rumour mill get rolling.

Trying to think of (decent) reasonably contemporary stations in southern Ontario that might take on one or both. Vinyl 95.3 could work, but some changes (like a solid tweaking of the format and station moniker would be in order.) Would either want to go back to Corus or Astral?

How about "independent" CKGE 94.9 The Rock in The 'Shwa? (No disrespect to Craig & Rita on the morning drive show.) That would make CKGE the home of Humble & Fred and David Marsden.

F--K Katie Perry & the SHIT that she produces!!! Virgin Radio must have some kind of deal with her record co. cause that is all you hear on it.

& just because you may think you have a hit(easy to do these days with all those windbag kids that don't know music) doesn't mean that your next song automatically goes on radio.

This F--KING broad makes me puke.

& also Vinyl 93.5 is a great station but when you listen to it all the time, they to have many repeated songs.

BEST STATION, BEST YEAR for music was the NEW WAVE of the 80's played on CFNY. Joy Division, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cure, Depeche Mode, ...... you get the picture.

On the Tim Horton's thread:

I've never really cared for their coffee, and I understand why, thanks for a former neighbour in Oakville who works at TH head office.

What really made me pretty much cut out their coffee was an event of about ten or so years ago. I spilled some coffee on the tan carpet of my car and had a sizeable stain to clean. I called a friend of mine, who had a car detailing business of nearly 20 years at the time. I asked him if he could get the stain out of my carpet. "That depends," was the reply. "On what?" "Your answer to a question." (WT...?) "Which is...?" "Is it Tim Horton's coffee?" "No." "Then I can get the stain out."

I had the job done. The (Second Cup) coffee stain came out completely. My friend explained that, for some reason, his team had the worst results trying to get Tim Horton's coffee stains out of automobile carpets. So, what is in or is different about that coffee? I try to keep it out of my stomach, let alone my car.

For Toronto Mike. Did you post and then remove a RIP category entry today?

Well, I've been with Bell for years, but decided to switch to Primus. I heard good things about Primus and it's cheaper, and get lots more services on my phone that Bell would charge a lot more for, so goodbye Sympatico. Go Habs.

Tim Hortons used to have great coffee, but not anymore. Must have changed the recipe. As for the poor employees, they're paid minimum wage and have to work their buns off.

P.S. Mike, your site seems a little slow these days. Are you having problems with your web host?

@Digger

Oh please. Patterson, unless I`ve missed something, hasn`t a fraction of the musical knowledge of Craig Robertson. Put him on any other station but The Rock.

The thing that drives me nut about Tim's is the drive through. why do lazy ass idiots line up in the drive through when half the time you can Park, walk in, get a coffee and get get back in your car before the person you would have been behind has even ordered. I walk in all the time. Ad then shake my head at the lazy morons and laugh!

I've been offline since I wrote this entry. My longest offline stretch in quite some time, actually. What the hell happened in Norway???

I did have a brief chat with Fred Patterson a.k.a. Freddie P. As usual, there's a story there, but like most great stories, it cannot be told in this forum. He'll be okay...

If this site is taking forever to load, I'm looking into it with the hosting company. Sorry about that.

Oh... and no, I didn't post a RIP entry and take it down. I tweeted about Elwy Yost's death, because I really liked Elwy and I plan to write something about it shortly.

Hey Mike, have you ever posted about the Waterfront photo contest? A quickie search didn't turn up anything.

http://www.waterfrontbia.com/photolist.asp

I saw this on another forum and said that I would vote for anything that doesn't have a city scene or cityscape in the background. Point the camera in the other direction, for Heaven's sake!

Oh yeah, and your site has been slow for a few days now, and I usually have a fast computer.

Getting you on my android phone is nigh on impossible.

@TOMike,
This is a exclusive yes or no answer (XOR) regarding FreddieP.
Is there something brewing of a comeback of a former Toronto morning show duel?

BTW: "Stay tuned" will be accepted valid response as well.
