The Royal Wedding

Published by Toronto Mike on April 25, 2011 @ 18:11 in News

weddingHave you heard Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton are getting hitched? Friday at Westminster Abbey, I hear. I honestly could not care less.

Judging from the television coverage, I'm the exception. When I catch a news item on the royal wedding, I can't click away fast enough. I simply don't care at all... not even a little bit.

I care more about the ISAF Nations Cup Asian Regional Sailing Final from this May at the Doha Sailing Club in Qatar. I hear good things about Shaikh Ayaz...

If you're into the royal wedding this Friday, please tell me why and help me understand the allure.

I couldn't care less either. Who cares. I have no interest in the wedding. I care more about my Habs. Go Habs.

Not interested...

...but if I had to watch one, it sure wouldn't be sailing.

This one will be in the books. It's an event, so I say watch it just so you can tell your grandkids you watched it. And then you can tell the story about how you were so disinterested in it that you were going to watch the ISAF Nations Cup - but you didn't, just so you can tell this this story!

WHO cares. The MEDIA is making this an event, especially in Canada where "the Queen" is only a figure because of our situation in the Commonwealth which Canada is part of.

I'd rather watch paint dry.

Go Bruins G0.

The Habs winning is one of the few things I do care less about.

It's important to me because William and I are born in the same year, so it is yet another reminder that will have to pop the question in the near future or see the rest of the world move forward without me.

I hear ya.

Since the royal wedding will cost $78 million - $77 mill of which the taxpayers will absorb... And since it will result in a potential cost of $47 BILLION to Britons, I have come up with a fabulous idea... We should always pay for celebrities' weddings and homes.

If you want to see what I mean, just check this out:

Anyhoo... Cheers.

it's nauseating, it really is.

for some people, it's an escape from the terrible news of late regarding japan or libya or the woman near mt pleasant and eglinton who was hoarding 50 cats.

don't get me wrong. i get the notion of escaping once in a while with some entertainment. in my case though, i like a good film that might make you think just a little bit after.

but therein lies the difference. there are people obsessed with the royal wedding, often because they're lacking some romance and pageantry in their own lives, so they get their fix through apparent real life fairy tales. same goes for shows like the bachelor.

i feel similar about most, if not all reality shows too. often these exploitive, edited out of context shows profile whack jobs - hoarders, crazy brides to be,etc. In all cases, the shows try to create drama (often where none exists which, let's face it, mostly women seem to be attracted to)
Plus it makes the viewer feel better about themselves because "i'm not THAT crazy". It's no coincidence that the people shown on these shows are often trashy - they're often too dumb to realize they're being exploited, and the people watching are often too dumb to realize they're being manipulated #ie reality tv is most often not real at all and "plots" are scripted.

i feel too that the major networks are laughing at people. they realize they can continue to jam terrible cheap programming into the gaping maw of the general public perpetually. they say reality tv is dead, but it's likely just getting started.

in any event, this royal wedding is just a giant expensive illusion that makes millions of people feel better about themselves. hey..sorta reminds me of religion..

Okay, here goes:
Having an individual who serves as a people's figurehead - the Americans substituted an office of Presidency who likewise leads their bland congress and senate - inspires all citizens by personalizing our collective history and advancement! (The U.S. even carved their selected leaders' faces onto a mountainside - and admires a fictional 'Statue of Liberty' woman in front of its greatest city.)
In the short time of Canada'a own nationhood - look to its continuous and astonishing levels of achievement across all fields of culture, industry, military, and exploration. This is because we had been willingly and squarely juxtaposed between both(!) the British Monarchy and a U.S. Presidency for a sense of doubled(!) inspiration.
During the last 45 years, yes we have asserted our own selves while informally elevating our Prime Ministeral status politically yet we still view our individual lives combined and alongside those remaining co-prisms of individual leadership as well.
Every great society in world history has possessed the leadership and legacy of an individual figurehead. Measured against the time of Canada's official nationhood for example - what had Ireland (adding all of its own 15+ centuries since Saint Patrick's immigrant arrival), a protestive committee republic, achieved by comparison?

Mike,

Although I won't be watching the Royal nuptials, I understand the allure to the masses, Royalist or not.

1. It brings near future hope that the current Monarch will not be in position forever.

2. Despite what a small minority of people would like, Canada is ruled by a Monarch. Technically speaking, Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Canada and her family is the Canadian Royal Family when speaking from a Canadian perspective.

3. It's a nice book end to Diana's murder by her MIL that her eldest son is going to ultimately become King and his Queen will be wearing Diana's ring on the throne.

4. Despite the crazy cat lady at Mt Pleasant and Eg, the rest of the world continues to move. It doesn't make any one less a caring person that they watch the Royal wedding. The 2 are not mutually exclusive.

5. If Canada can spend $1.7B to host the Olympics(tm) and Harper can spend $1.6B to have a party in Toronto for his G8 buddies, what's $78M for a wedding. I respectfully disagree with @Dahlia Kurtz's potential cost calculations.

6. Hey, it's a wedding, have fun.

Pete, my calculations came from one of England's most respected accounting firms and its government. They are indeed fact. Not opinion.

Mike, why?

Who the hell cares about 2 people who never have to work a day in their life just because of who they were born to.

Like Catholic priests, they are just 2 human beings, thats it. No more, no less.

Fk the queen & the toads that she surrounds herself with.
