Campbell's "25% Less Sodium" Tomato Soup Controversy

Published by Toronto Mike on April 19, 2011 @ 11:30 in News

foodI enjoy the TIL entries on Reddit. TIL stands for "today I learned" and that's where I found out Campbell's "Regular" And "25% Less Sodium" tomato soup both contain 480mg of sodium.

Campbell's reply is that the "25% less sodium" claim is as compared to the average of "all varieties" of condensed soup, not tomato. "Campbell has complete confidence in the accuracy of our labels and our marketing communications and that they meet regulatory and other legal requirements," the company told Reuters.

I'm calling bullshit on Cambell's reply. They knew exactly what they were doing, and who amongst us wouldn't assume their "25% less sodium" tomato soup contains less salt than their regular Campbell's tomato soup?

And the kicker? Campbell's "25% less sodium" tomato soup costs more.

Wow.

People have been talking a lot about label-reading, lately. There's obviously a huge benefit to knowing what you're putting in your body but at the same time there are arguments it causes disordered eating. Still, it's always important to monitor the amount of sodium you consume.

Or, you know, whether you're getting screwed.

The "Health Check" logo is worse. It's one thing to put your trust in a company, another to put your trust in the Heart & Stroke foundation.

My own suggestion would be this. Learn to cook. Only idiots put their trust in processed food companies to look after their health. Buy a crock pot, some spices & some tomatoes. It also will taste better.

Anybody else notice the only difference on the listed items is reduction in Potassium? Shouldn't it be labelled "Lower in Potassium" than the regular Cambell's. Maybe that's the error :)

this is similar to the commercials for sugary cereal.

they'll put a graphic on screen that says "part of a nutritious breakfast" over a wide shot of the bowl of cereal, some milk, maybe some fruit/ orange juice.

In reality, the "nutritious breakfast" refers to everything but the cereal, but because they show fruit and suff, they can legally get away with it, but the message left in consumer's minds is that the cereal (which is essentially a box of candy) is good for you.

Stephen Harper probably runs Campbell's

I am so shocked that a big corporation would stoop to manipulation and lying to try to pry more dollars from consumers. Stunning. Here I always believed that all big corporations always had our best interests at heart. Next thing you'll know someone will be trying to tell us that the tar sands aren't good for the environment and politicians aren't don't tell the truth. The dream dies yet again.

@Freddie P

I'll bet Harper is behind this.

@Romy

It's the charging more for the label that says less salt that really irks me. It's deception for monetary gain and it's very, very wrong.

I'm with Irvine and don't eat the crap. Anything coming out of a can or box is manufactured and not has absolutely no nutritional value.

Learn to cook. You'll save yourself a boat load of money and it will taste 100x better than that "soup".

@Cambo

Making Tomato soup in a slow cooker is fast, easy & cheap and yes it tastes much better.

It will also save you a ton of money. I cut my food bill in half just by cooking everything. I even make my own ice cream now.

I prefer the lesser Canadians in the East and West to make my food for me because I'm too fat living off all the money floating into this province by the rest of you. It's great to live in the Centre of the Universe.

Sadly, a lot of people fall for crap like this and Campbells knows it. There's another company off my list.

We as consumers have power...just don't buy the product when they pull crap like this.

The whole food industry is full of shit. If you haven't seen it rent or buy the DVD or get it on Itunes its called Food Inc. Its the truth about the food industry will make you reconsider certain choices you make and really gets you to start reading labels.

Mike, the thing that surprises me is that you eat soup out of can!!

It does look like a Harper inspired move!

Be aware of any processed food and do learn to cook from scratch--easy, cheaper, and much healthier!

@Elvis. That's always been the master plan dude. Alberta created Nickleback just to harass and torture people in the East. Now it's salt in soup. Sadly, I wish you were buying our oil instead of Saudi Oil. Those Arabs really destroy the environment

@Buffalo Boy: Supersize Me, Fast Food Nation & Food Inc are great films.

What no one mentions is that poor eating costs the health care systems 10's of billions. Type 2 diabetes alone costs us 15 billion. It's almost entirely preventable. Learning how to cook might help too

Have no fear, the high cost of energy is going to fix this problem (of not cooking) in the very near future.

@Elvis. I'm always game for a great flame war BUT man, not in Boon's blog. I mean he just fixed up Jane and Finch & all.

Plus I'm busy. Need to hit up Money Mart for a hun to get a bottle.

That's right, I fixed up Jane and Finch. You got a problem with that, @Irvine?

Not at all Boon. I'm just sad you never stopped by when I lived there. It's a great neighborhood regardless of what people say.

People with half a brain that read the packaging on what they are about to eat would know either way. basically if you passed grade 10 media, it should be no problem for you no matter what the label claims.

I USED to buy Campbell's products regularly, but NO MORE, MOTHER-BLEEPERS !
I PROMISE that I will never send another nickle in their direction ! But do you know what ? Campbells dosn't give a pluperfect damn about our responses. Every knock, is somehow a boost to these thieving bastards where the internet is concerned. Would that our 'MIKEY' had the real power to really put their knickers-in-a-knot by organizing a continent-wide
B O Y C O T T. CAN'T THIS 'SOCIAL-MEDIA'I keep hearing so much about do anything other than juvenile shit-disturbances ?
