First Day of School Anxiety

Published by Toronto Mike on September 7, 2010 @ 09:34 in Memories

schoolToday is the first day of the school year for most kids. I know because I was nervous last night, had an uneven sleep, and woke up with that 'first day of school' feeling in the pit of my stomach.

No, I wasn't nervous for my kids. They're both full-timers now and excited about going back. I think this Labour Day-sparked anxiety is a hold-over from my own school days. I think it's just ingrained in me, in Pavlovian fashion. I haven't had a first day of school in about 13 years but I still feel it.

Am I the only guy who went to work worried about his first day at school?

The day after Labour Day is the real "New Year." January 1st is an artificial day but today is a day we all remember as the start of something new.

Yah, there's something to that first day of school thing. Last night I really started to fret about all that had to be done today and through the week. Something I don't typically do. And I agree that today is really the start of the new year. And that I do like.

I don't really miss it for me but, I miss it for my kids. Both out of school and it makes me feel that much older. Would be nice to go back in time and just do the first day of grade nine, all over again, knowing what I know now.

It usually lands in me mid-August and lets up sometime around the first snow. Hear, hear, Elvis.

I said a lot of the same things yesterday.

Doesn't bother me, but it used to. I went to boarding school, and Labour Day always made me nervous. I didn't like going to school and only being home on weekends, but I haven't been to school for many years as I graduated from boarding school in 1980.
