1 Week After Jason Barr Fired, Where's the News?

Published by Toronto Mike on September 1, 2010 @ 14:45 in Edge 102 ~ CFNY, Radio

questionmarkIt's been a week since Jason Barr was let go from Edge 102. Jason was 1/3 of The Dean Blundell Show, a very popular Toronto morning radio show, especially amongst teens and those in their 20s.

This trio has been together since they took over for Humble and Fred on 102.1 back in 2001. Humble and Fred, you may recall, left for Mojo 640 and their "Talk Radio for Guys" format. Before The Dean Blundell Show, Jason Barr was Danger Boy on Humble and Fred, a part of that show since the mid 90s. That's a long time he was on Edge 102 in the mornings.

It's been a week since he was fired, and I'm surprised at the complete lack of coverage. I haven't found a word about it in the MSM. It's on a few message boards and blogs, but surprisingly few. It's possible nobody knows about it, but isn't the MSM supposed to break such news to the masses? Hell, I had the story a week ago. Is it deemed such an insignificant event it's completely unworthy of coverage?

My entry about Jason being fired is getting some traffic from people Googling for more information, but not a heck of a lot. Perhaps the average CFNY listener won't have a clue things are different until after Labour Day.

Here's the results from Google when you search for Jason Barr Fired. The highlighted results are from me, whether I'm hosting them or not.

I noticed this as well. Also the edge tweeted the show was returning today, I tuned in (which was to be for the last time) to hear what the boys had to say about Jason's firing, but alas, more best of garbage.

I wonder whats happening behind the scenes, if anything.

He was working for the "MSM".

There is no major media outlet in Toronto catering to that demographic, or where a listener to the show would be working. (Besides other radio stations, maybe.)

Just the way it goes now.

There will definitely be more searches once the show comes back next week and people will be wondering why Jason isn't on.

So Dean wanted Jason fired?! What was the big PERSONAL ISSUE that Dean had to have Jason thrown off? Dean, although funny at times is a prick. Why would he not put that shit behind him for the listeners. Jason was the rock of that show. I'd be shocked if the show didn't lose tonns of listeners because of this. When word gets out that Dean is the cause of this the integriy(the litte there is) will be completely gone. Bye bye listeners, bye bye morning show. But Dean will do whatever the hell he wants anyway because he is running that station right?! NO more for me, I can't support a station any more with such little integrity.

Wow Im dumbstruck. Jason was a staple of my morning (Since the 90's)and will definitely be missed!

seen on another blog:

work for the edge and the story is as follows: Jason was let go on the request of Dean. They had a falling out in their personal life and Dean demanded Jason be fired. Something erupted at SausageFest and the team's vacation was extended to try and sort it out but in the end Dean threatend to walk away unless changes were made and Corus caved. Jason will be fine, he was given a large severance package, and already had offeres from other stations.

They will be adding a third member to the morning crew, current canditades are Adam, Josie, Meatus, and Darren. Also Dean and Todd are open to finding new talent that could put a fresh spin on the show. No deadline is set for the replacement so the Dean and todd show could be the norm until the end of the year. Tempers had been flairing for a while behind the mic, Everyone at the edge thought something like this was going to happen eventually.

There's no news because The Edge doesn't have the kind of fans CFNY had in its heyday. We loved Alan Cross, Brother Bill. Hell, we even loved Earl Jive sometimes. Not so now. Today's listeners could care less, and why should they?

WHAT??? I was wondering where he was!! I'm so disappointed. Jason was the only one who had an intelligent opinion on that show. How on EARTH was Jason fired over dumbass Todd?? A total loss to that station. Idiots...

Chicken Schwarma was someone else. I met Chicken Schwarma at the 20th anniversary H+F reunion podcast last summer.

Another nail in the coffin.
Not too surprised on the firing. This station becomes less EDGEy as time passes.
What's up with Love Line??
Switch your dials to XM - Alt Nation if you want up an coming music, 8 months ahead of the so called "Edge"!!!!
Its painless make the switch!

jason was the best part of the show. twice as intelligent as the other two put together. the show sounds empty now, and full of audio screwups. big mistake corus. so, does anyone know if it's about some tiff with dean, or did corus just want to hire someone at, likely, a third of jay's salary? currently, the show sucks. let's face it. dean's an asshole.

WTF
September 9, 2010 / 12:22

Hate to see anyone go like that, especially if it's true that Dean demanded he go.
But I always found Jason arrogant and self-righteous. Todd is a clown but that is also the role expected of him on that show, and the way Dean treated him when he started was disgusting. Todd, I believe, is much more worldly and reasonable than both the other guys.
So maybe there is some truth to Dean wanting Jason out, because Jason likely wouldn't put up with Dean's BS the way Todd has had to.

Mike, this blog is great for breaking news, so chime in here. What's the story on this. Dean stumbles every morning through explanations on why Jason is gone and got a little pissy this morning when some guy wrote in about it.

I listen to the show but he did comment about the rumor on your site saying is was false. To be clear he said "internet rumor" your site is the only one with any info about this. Are the rumors posted here true or what??

paul
September 10, 2010 / 21:06

today dean said that he wrote jason an email, but that jay had not yet responded. todd had spoken to him on the phone. try to get inside dean's brain. if you work closely with someone for 10 years and they get let go due to cutbacks, aren't you going to call them at home to see how they're doing? but dean didn't. and jay ignored, to date anyway, his email. hmm. what's up with that? i missed nikki's bit today but i'm going to listen to the podcast. i hope she's on it. i'd like to hear her take, at least the on air part.

What "Edge"?
September 13, 2010 / 12:43

Another edge listener lost, not that it matters. I've sat through the past year of censorship and "mainstreaming". Firing Jason was the last straw, time to find another station to listen to.

Jeff
September 14, 2010 / 07:05

Jason wasn't fired. I went into the studio to pick up tickets I won from a contest and I asked the guys there what had happened with Jason. They told me that they had just had a meeting about it and can't really discuss it. They did mention that he was not fired, but instead may have left on his own. He had made indications to guys at the station that he wanted to leave radio and perhaps pursue voice work. There was some legal contract stuff going on hence no disclosure until a resolution is reached. So it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. In the mean time, I'm boycotting the station in general for not being able to handle the situation properly, and not informing their listeners of news, ANY news on the issue. The DB Show is boring now, and I have no interest in listening.

The show isn't the same without Jason, I have started listening to other stations in the morning. Its not surprising that many others are doing the same. Best of luck Jason!

September 15, 2010 / 08:31

To be honest, I don't listen to the DBS religiously. Its just my entertainment when going to work (which is maybe only a 15 minute drive). However, I've been listening to the show for years and years and I think maybe with the departure of Jason, its time to bring in a new morning show altogether. I agree with one of the previous poster that said Dean is a prick. He is arrogant and clearly thinks he's better than everyone else. As for the quality of the station, I'm not a huge fan of the mornings, but I like Fearless Fred a lot, and Bookie's classic.

The morning show is dead though. Time for a change.

john.B
September 16, 2010 / 10:19

It came as a shock to me as I'm sure everyone else who are reg listeners of DBS that Jason suddenly had left.

I read an off handed comment saying it was too bad jason is gone now and didn't believe it to be anything. I didn't think he would suddenly just have left with no forewarning or any overt changes on the show indicating a looming breakup.

Then you would think such a thing would be major and dean and todd would be sounding a little pissed or display a little bit of grieving for the loss of the show. Instead Dean casually mentioned it like he was describing an upcoming edge event. No strain or emotion in his voice.
You'd think if he was let go by chorus the rest of the show and other DJ's would stand up and fight for him. They didn't lift a finger of resistance and were nonchalant, Dean cracking jokes about it and immediately changing the subject when Jason's departure came up. Tossed aside like yesterdays news. What a heartless bastard.
I thought at the core dean was a caring and integrity driven individual who is not one to crumble when it comes to standing up for his beliefs. It seems here that he was spineless and if they were beefing, then for god sakes get over it.
Remember after wakestock? they were joking around and having a grand old time following the weekend. The crew seemed rejuvenated and back yo their best. Just a week or 2 before Jason's dismissal that I can only speculate was brought down upon him through a fallout with Deanus.
The two of these guys were like best friends a couple years back, always seeing eye to eye and playing off one another with TOdd playing the stooge. Its sad to see that end for whatever fhked up reason.
I guess Jason just got tired of the same old juvenile mayhem of the DBS. It couldn't stay fresh and he'd had enough of the endless recycling of material, wasn't willing to play along like before and Dean resented that and I can see this bringing about many other underlying issues. Anyways Jason you will be missed. I wish petition could be signed and presented to Jason, the dean blundell show and chorus itself to show Jason how much he means to listeners and the show. I'm sure 10s of thousands of signatures could be rounded up with a Bring Jason Back campaign and it seems like the only chance of making Jason realize what a great thing he had with the show and considering a return...Life's not what it was without a complete DBS.

Jason Barr was the only 'cool' guy on the morning show with DB. Dean makes fun of ppl dying of cancer while Todd is just dumb as a bag of hammers! That being said, I loooove the show and it still managed to make me laugh..WILL NOT be the same at all without him....I wondered where the hell he went! And why the news was being done by someone else (name escapes me). It is sounding quite boring...Dean and Todd better do something quick or they'll be next I fear. Show may have lost some of it's 'Edge' with losing Jason.

"On August 24, 2010, it was announced that Jason Barr was no longer with the show because he pulled his pants down at sausage fest, and shouted "I have a sausage for ya!"

Ok, so when this first happend, Dean kept rmeinding listeners that "we are all expendable" making it sound as if jason was fired, but recently Dean has let it slip that jason was canned or kick off the show, implying that he left on his own. So what the hell happend?

Fake Toronto Mike
September 24, 2010 / 19:45

Well it's official, Jason was indeed fired due to his actions of exposing himself as sausage fest. no charges were filed but Corus had no choice but to let him go due to their strict sexual harrassment policies

WHY is it "official" that he was fired or exposing himself?
What's the proof??

October 3, 2010 / 15:25

Thats too bad for Jason. He will be missed and I have since stopped listening. Dean is a talentless hack who rips off Howard Stern bits and executes them in a half ass manner.

Best of luck to Jason. There's a brighter future for him.

October 20, 2010 / 09:52

i see at www.biggsandbarr.com that one of the options for their hopeful new employers includes 102.1. this kind of throws the whole sausagefest exposure, sexual harassment thing out the window. and whoever said he'd be at 590 is obviously just a little off.

I liked Jason being on the show he wasn't as crude and childish as Dean and Todd. If the rumour going around is true (the one where Dean demanded he be fired) are people honestly that surprised by it ? I mean come on there were 3 people on the show but it was only called The Dean Blundel Show. That ALWAYS bugged me, if it's a 3 person show, come up with a different name, plus I am a little biased because I like Dean the least.

I love DBS. I really liked Jason as he was the hockey-guy/voice of reason. You knew something was really funny if they got Jason chuckling. Jason was a reactionary character only, good come-backs but never really started much. I still love the dynamic between Dean and Todd. I think they could bring in any other reasonable 3rd person and it'll work.

I don't really see how Jason's politically driven/mutually agreeable dismissal is more upsetting than what happened with Martin Streak's reasonless/age discrimination dismissal. If you quit CFNY over Jason but not over Martin than that's a little screwy IMHO, of course.
