Oscar Best Pictures Nominees

Published by Toronto Mike on February 2, 2010 @ 08:50 in Movies

oscarsThe 2010 Oscar nominations have been revealed. They are:

  • Avatar
  • The Blind Side
  • District 9
  • An Education
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Precious
  • A Serious Man
  • Up
  • Up in the Air

Of the ten films up for the Academy Award, I've only seen Avatar, Up and Up in the Air. I'm very pleased to see Up nominated, it's absolutely worthy.

In my review of Up, I wrote "I smell a best picture nomination". Elvis asked me to clarify if I meant best animated feature or best movie overall. My reply on May 28?

Best Picture overall. You read it here first, folks... unless you read it somewhere else. I haven't read any Up reviews yet.

I have seen Avatar, District 9, Up and Up in the Air. I do have The Hurt Locker on my list, but the rest are all TMN films, so I probably won't see them before the Oscars.

All 4 I've listed are great films. Mike, you should watch District 9!

You picked a good year to make your prediction. I suggest it wouldn't appear here if they hadn't expanded the nominee list to ten. Good call though.

District 9 really surprises me. To me, once you subtract the whole inter-planetary racism angle explored near the beginning it just turns into a royal bed-sh*tting of the highest order (in terms of story). So many holes in the story line... That movie ranks down with some of the worst Bruce Willis movies I've seen.

Why were the aliens subservient to the humans? Please don't tell me the cat food thing was it.

I disagree. I was really pleased to see District 9 on there.

Definitely not a typical 'best picture nominee' kind of movie - but I found the story to be fantastic. Probably one of the most thrilling movies I've ever seen.

But, you know.. movies are pretty subjective.
