Groundhog Day is Junk Science

Published by Toronto Mike on February 2, 2010 @ 15:24 in Miscellaneous

Groundhog DayToday is Groundhog Day, and every morning radio or television show felt obliged to tell you whether Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia or Wiarton Willie saw their respective shadows.

I've peeled back the curtain to look at the science behind these supposed indicators, and I've come to the conclusion that it's nothing more than junk science. You cannot gauge the amount of winter remaining based on whether a rodent saw its shadow or not.

Don't believe the hype.

What kills me about all the groundhog nonsense is they say if the rodent sees its shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. That's still a good deal when you consider that by the calendar it's actually seven weeks until spring.

Alan beat me to my comment, so I'll just pass along a favourite Red Green quote, which kind of passes along how many of us feel:

It is February 2nd
The Ground Hog comes out of his hole and sees a shadow
It's the shadow of my right front tire
That means winter will last another six weeks
But not for him

Next thing you're going to tell us there is no Santa or the Easter Bunny.

One year I would like to see the groundhogs dressed in tuxedos let a human out of the cage and hold him up

How many weeks of winter are left if Sandra Rinomata googles her own breasts?
