Canada's Last WWI Veteran Dies

Published by Toronto Mike on February 19, 2010 @ 09:31 in O Canada

canadaJohn Babcock, Canada’s last known First World War veteran, has died. John Babcock was 109 years old.

John Babcock was ready to fight in the Great War so we can live in a country where the great national stress is a shootout victory over Switzerland in Olympic men's hockey.

Thanks, John, for being one of the 650,000 men and women Canada recruited to serve in the “war to end all wars.”

Further respect goes to Babcock for recognizing a difference between active war service and his own, lesser, supportive duties when the recent issue of a symbolic state funeral was raised.
I don't know if many younger Canadians (or rather S. Ontarians), including of my own generation, could or would have made that same honourable distinction.

R.I.P. Jon "Jack" Babcock

A state funeral would not only honour John. but all the Canadians who've given their life on behalf of Canada.
