Canada's Final Torchbearer

Published by Toronto Mike on February 11, 2010 @ 11:59 in Olympics

olympicsHave you heard we're hosting the winter Olympics this month? It's true, Vancouver narrowly beat out PyeongChang to win the IOC vote almost 7 years ago.

I'll miss most of the opening ceremony due to hockey commitments, but I am naturally curious as to who will be our final torchbearer. Who will take the Olympic toke and light the Olympic cauldron inside BC Place?

Wayne Gretzky or Betty Fox? Vote below.

I like Rick Hanson but not sure if they woudl use him for the Paralympic (I don't know if there's a separate flame lighting) but if it's not Rick, then Wayne Gretzky. I heard Walter was already one of the runners ont he last day as well as Roly Fox so I can't imagine they'd have Betty as well. Every Canadian knows who Wayne is... my money's on him.

I'm going with Bobby Orr.

Or Neil Young.

I'm hearing VANOC says it won't be Wayne. I'm betting it's Wayne Gretzky handing off to Betty Fox.

Haitian born Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, Fox's brother or other family member, Gretzky or a 1952 Olympics team member, Hanson, or maybe Kerrin Lee-Gartner. At least one of the above would be a good choice.

Almost as soon as I hit 'send' I heard that it wouldn't be Wayne.. but that still surprises me... It won't be Michaelle Jean - no political/governmental people. I don't think enough people remember Kerrin Lee and I believe that it has to be someone that represents sports and the pursuit of excellence. I would believe Terry Fox (naturally, if he were alive), but not his mother, just like it shouldn't be Walter. I would be misty-eyed if it were Rick Hanson. He did, after all, wheel around the world and landed back home in Vancouver.

I heard this morning it might be a hologram of Terry Fox. It should be him or his mum. He represents the spirit for sure!
