Burkie has to sign the Woman's Cda. goalie. She has best glove I've seen in years - better than what we have now & lets very few rebounds.
Congrats on a great win.

Yeah the women showed the men how its done alright, smoking cigars and underage drinking on the ice following the awards ceremony lovely...

Hey BBM,

The legal drinking age in BC is 19.

Who under the age of 19 did you see drinking on the ice?

The drinking on the ice wasn't very classy. They could have waited.

Everyone had left the arena. It's Canada - where was the IOC when Jon Montgomery drank a pitcher of beer on the street in Whistler?

Here's my opinion on this...

These women just won gold, defeating their arch rivals in a hard fought game.

If they want to crack open a beer and smoke a victory cigar after everyone's left, I'm okay with that. They deserve it, and it's pretty much standard after winning a championship.

Ideally, the 18-year old would abstain so we can avoid this nonsense, but damn... 18 is the legal drinking age in Quebec.

I hate the fact we have to apologize for this.

We won. I'm proud of these women.

But Mike, come on now, don't let your Countries victory cloud your judgement. Look I understand there are probbly worse offenses in the Olympics doping, steroids, and other forms of cheating that far outweigh this, but to be doing what they were doing on the ice? in full public view?
They could have handled themselves slightly more professionally than that and maybe gone out to a bar or something or back to their hotel rooms....anything but in full public view and even then, there is no excuse for drinking underage, I dont care if the drinking age for all of Canada is 18 except for the City of Vancouver, the point is in the jurisdiction she was in the drinking age was 19 therefore the law states that she is underage, where was their coach to put their foot down and say hey get your asses in the locker room or something. Completely poor taste and poor judgement. Especially if there were any kids around to observe it.

BBM, you're missing a key detail.

Everyone had left the arena. All spectators were gone. All that remained were a few journalists, who did what journalists do, and took pictures.

They did not crack open a beer and light up a cigar in front of kids or fans or during live television coverage.

The article I just read said that the team was asked to leave the dressing room and go back onto the ice for pictures by the media.

Did we find out if Team USA kept up their tradition of trashing their hotel rooms?

Congratulations to the women of Team Canada on the Gold. I'd also like to acknowledge and congratulate the women of Team USA on their Silver. Good job by all.

Oh and my opinion of the drinking debate? Bottoms up!!!

My understanding: If they went back to their private hotel rooms, underage drinking doesn't apply anymore, correct? Or am I wrong about how underage drinking laws work... (ie, can't sell to or serve minors alcohol, but in private, minors *can* drink alcohol... it's just that child endangerment or negligence or whatever laws come into effect, but not explicitly underage drinking laws)

@The_Voice - no. I don't believe that's the way it would work. Just because you don't get caught, it's still against the law. You might be thinking of smokes (illegal to buy if you're under 18 but not to smoke).

McNulty

There is a time and a place for these things. Partying on the ice wasn't a good idea.

Having the arena empty mitigates the idea but it still just looks bad.

I am not taking away anything from their victory, it was hard fought and deserved.

It may be an issue if the stadium is a licensed establishment. As a licensed establishment they would have to ensure that the liquor regulations are followed or else their license could be suspended.

Wow. I can't believe what this thread has turned into. They were happy, celebrating the moment. I can only imagine what would be being said (and how many posts) if it were the U.S. woman who were doing this.

FYI - U.S. men's team up 2-0 on the Team Finland.

If I'd won Gold - I'd have been celebrating with beer and cigars too. And maybe I don't even mean drinking and smoking them.

Monica Lewinsky - where are you when I need you?

I kid.

This story really only proves how awesome Canadian women are. She deserved the beer. They're crucifying her for drinking at 18? Give me a break.

@elvis , actually, I just double checked. I was a little off.

It's *legal* for minors to drink alcohol in the privacy of their own home, but only under the supervision of their parents (it differs per province... in a few, the minors have to be older than 16 or 17, but theirs no age distinction in others, including British Columbia).

I wasn't able "your own home" can apply to a hotel room where the parents are supervising... but it's pretty clear that it's legal in their own home with parental supervision.

The_Voice

Whoops, *some* have *no* legal underage drinking at all, but BC isn't one of those provinces.
