Bush League CFL

Published by Toronto Mike on February 10, 2010 @ 17:01 in Toronto Argos

CFLDavid Braley has been announced as the new owner of the Toronto Argonauts. David Braley already owns a CFL team, the British Columbia Lions. David Braley gets to keep both the Lions and the Argos.

In an eight team league, one man owns 25% of the teams. The fact that one man can own more than one team in the same league amazes me. I'm sure there's no other league on the planet that would allow such a thing. Can you imagine MLSE buying a second NHL team, or Rogers owning a second MLB team?

It can't happen because there are strict rules against it. And for good reason. The integrity of the game must be preserved and even the implication of impropriety is unacceptable.

No wonder my family and friends think the CFL is bush league.

The rest of Canada seems to think that Toronto doesn't embrace the CFL because it's Canadian and they think Toronto wants to be 'American'.

But it's not that at all - it's because of stuff like this. The CFL too often comes across like a minor league with all sorts of wacky things going on, while Toronto (rightly, since it's the 5th biggest city in NA) seems more interested in what it perceives to be major league (like the NFL).

What happens when BC plays Argos.
Hoping for a tie?
Bush league with a coach who was let go years ago & no new players coming for 2010.

It's a shame that stuff like this is allowed to put a black mark on the league, because in my opinion the CFL game is far superior to NFL football. Hopefully something can be done, but I'm sure nobody will take the steps necessary to see that it does. they haven't before, so why would they now?

Damien Cox warned there'd be people like you!

Personally, as long as the team is successful, Bruce McNall could own the Argos again for all I'd care.

It's unfortunate because it's a mentality like that that made this necessary. If more Torontonians embraced this league, then there would be more people interested in owning the team. Toronto is too important to the league to just let it fold, which is what would happen, if Braley hadn't stepped in.

I'm not ashamed of the CFL, I'm ashamed of Toronto. It's things like this that makes the rest of the country hate us.

Mike - look up MLS. Multiple ownership all over the place. The league actually owns the contracts for all players, not the individual teams.

I'm a Torontian that has embraced this league. Peruse the entries in http://www.torontomike.com/toronto_argos/ to see how I prefer the CFL to the NFL and promote the league frequently.

I recently showed how to convert an NFL fan into a CFL fan in 4 minutes: http://www.torontomike.com/2009/10/how_to_convert_an_nfl_fan_into.html

I love the league and I love the Argos, but when one guy owns 2 of the 8 franchises, it screams bush league.

I know I'm going to get drilled for this one but.....TORONTO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT CFL FOOTBALL!

There I said it, okay maybe not Toronto...maybe it's just me.

The OHL doesn't even allow this. Toronto St. Mikes and Missisauga Icedogs were owned by the same group and they were forced to sell one of the teams... Thus creating the pitiful Niagara Icedogs

This and the stupid one point rule for missing a field goal makes this league unwatchable.

Or maybe the problem is just Toronto arrogance? The Stamps outsell the Leafs 2:1 per each game.

Toronto: Too cool for school and a shitty bus system.

Irvine...How is it Toronto arrogance when high school leagues are run better?

Irvine - 8 home dates vs. 41 is hardly a fair comparision.

@ Irvine

Typical Western Canadian. Brash, proud, and jumps at any attempt to attack Toronto.

What other league in the world has something as ridiculous as one owner with 2 teams?

UCLA and USC are owned by the same entity, but I wouldn't call the PAC-10 'bush'. Ditto the the Big 12 and SEC.

@ Brandon - as per my previous post, Major League Soccer has multiple owners owning multiple teams.

Tee, you're not seriously suggesting that's anything close to the same thing, are you?

Look for him to sell his interests in BC and concentrate fully on TO and that future NFL bid...

I guess MLS is bush-league too.

Brandon, does that mean you'll send back all the Petrol dollars that keep bailing out your basketcase province? You realize my hard work and taxes pay for education & health care in the rest of this run down nation.

Alberta is your creditor dude. You owe us. Petrol dollars bailed out GM and Chrysler.

The only good thing that comes from the East is the sun & an empty Greyhound bus.

What I am suggesting is that as long as management remains separate and Braley doesn't take a hands-on role with regards to football operations, then I see no cause for concern.

Why should fans care about this crappy team when the owner doesnt. Jim barker should be fired as gm and coach right now. Hes just as arrogant as ron wilson and brian burke. Fans are turning out this team because of barkers bs every time hes on the radio. The argos need a complete over including huntley flemons wroten chad owens cleo lemon need to go. Oh yes even mike o shea and orlando should be gone. We need real football people to run this organization not some garbage that barkers brought in. Every week barker has excuse after excuse. One thing i know before its all over cleo lemon will never become a winner. I predict the argos will win only 7 games this year with this loser. Steven jyles is the better quaterback , but for some reason barker thinks lemon is something.
