I Hate My Favourite Team

Published by Toronto Mike on January 28, 2010 @ 21:22 in Toronto Maple Leafs

LeafsI thought I hit the bottom last October. I had just come to the realization that my five and a half year old daughter had not been alive for a single Leafs playoff game. We Leaf fans are enduring an unprecedented streak of failure for a team that hasn't won the Stanley Cup in 42 years.

Four months later, it's gotten worse. For the first time since I discovered the team in the early 80s, I hate my Maple Leafs. We've been this bad before, we've even been worse, but as a wise man once tweeted, the 2009-10 Toronto Maple Leafs "have no redeeming qualities whatsoever".

It's okay hating your favourite team. I feel I've earned the right. After 30 years of investing blood, sweat and tears, I know I deserve better. And in lieu of better, I'm going to do what feels natural, and that means hating this hateful, brutal team.

I knew we found a new bottom when I got free tickets to next Tuesday nights game at the ACC and I didn't feel the excitement I've felt every time prior. I'm not even looking forward to watching my team live and that scares saddens me.

The Passion That Afflicts Us All

It's bad, folks. I hate my favourite team. I can't stop watching them, or reading about them, or writing about them, but I sure as hell can hate them. And I do.

I've been given freeby tik's also a few times & always give them to others. Just ain't worth it.

If UFA's leave, next year will be worse. No 1st round draft choices next 2 years.

This team is worse than last year & next year will be even worse than this year!!!!!

At least I saw the parade in 1967 with KEON holding the cup.

Notice how the only teams worse than the Leafs have former Leaf coaches?

...

Let's all let out a sigh.

Hey Rob...I noticed that too. The bottom of the barrel all have Leaf connections.

I heard Wilson on the radio yesterday. It really sounds like he is gearing up for the Olympics. No sense of urgency at all.

Sammi...I heard that interview yesterday too. He really does sound that he is excited about the Olympics and the Leafs are an afterthought. And Watters just kissed his butt.

Mike - YOU are the reason the Leafs will never be more than they are. No matter what they do, you will still watch, attend and read about them. And they're counting on that. Did you ever think that if you buy a FORD, and it turns out to be a lemon, would you buy a Ford again? Not likely. You wouldn't support their product. So why the leafs? You've certainly paid them more than you would have ever Ford.

I feel your pain, Mike. I'm the same way watching most pro wrestling nowadays.

I don't know what the big problem is with this Leafs team, but they're terrible. Even though it looks like it many nights, it's not like they're sending a bunch of hacks out there and saying "ok guys, try to play something resembling what might be considered hockey on some level." I'm starting to wonder if Wilson has to go. I'm sure he's not going anywhere any time soon, but I'm starting to think he should.

Anone, put away the stupid leafs dont wanna win arguement. MLSE likes money. A deep playoff run would bring the bandwagoners out of the closet with their wallets in hand. They spend to the cap and spare no expense on the team.

The Leafs are terrible right now and this off season will be pivotal in the leafs future. The Leafs have alot of capspace coming off and Burke MUST spend it wisely this summer.

i've officially jumped on the Raptors bandwagon. If they sink, then it's the Toronto Rock. If the Rock turn out crap, it's Women's Roller Derby. Failing that, turtle races at the beach, and should the turtles suck, i'll be reduced to watching Sea Monkeys on a ferris wheel.

I have to agree with Anone on this one.

Steve, it's not about the Leafs not wanting to win, or the MLSE not liking money.

It's about them being able to put any kind of garbage product out there, and still be the top money earning team in the league...

Until that changes, there's no pressure for them to make any improvements.

"The Leafs are terrible right now" you say?? "Right now"??

I can't even remember (in my lifetime) a time when the Leafs weren't terrible! ...Ok, I'll give them that season with Douggie when Gretz screwed us out of our best chance at the cup.

But after that, it's just gone down hill.

We have a team without a Star Goalie, and without any Star Goal Scorers.. And then we wonder why it's not working??

Burke really screwed us... His record for bringing in Damaged Goods is just embarassing.. Sometimes I wonder if we even scout the players we get.

Anyway, I'm gonna end on that note.

I could go on forever and ever about the failure that is the Leafs.

Fredericton Steve, the other dimension to the theory that MLSE isn't motivated to go for the Cup because they make huge profits even with bad team results is that the people making the money are the teachers' pension fund, which might not be the aggressive capitalists going for all the money they can make.

That kind of stakeholder strikes me as one which will be satisfied as long as the team makes substantial profits. That they will accomplish.

@Anone, Ford has had a track record far better and far longer than the Toronto Maple Leafs. ALL auto manufacturers have had lemons at one time or another. The Leafs just keep squeezing.

former huge Leafs Fan. i used to eat and sleep this team but now could not even name 4 players on the squad and the ACC has onlt seen my shadow once in the last 7 years (megadeth concert). I have never been happier to have this monkey (hockey team) off my back. i actually laugh now when i see the local sportscaster panic and overanylize the latest 10 game losing streak. I have now rediscovered my love for the Toronto Argonauts and the CFL. Yeah, i know what you are thinking... But the Argo's suck too! Very true, but the Argos have 1 thing going for them that qualifies them as my team....They are not owned by MLSE, yeahhhhhhh, ARRRRRRGOSSSSSSSSSS
