Toronto Blog Challenge Update

Published by Toronto Mike on October 22, 2009 @ 18:29 in SEO: Search Engine Optimization

googleIt's been awhile since I updated you all on my Toronto Blog Google Challenge. I want to rank #1 in Google for Toronto Blog searches. I want to be the definitive Toronto blog, according to Google.

What makes this challenge particularly tough are two multi-authored and financed blogs. As I've said before, I am but one man doing this for shits and giggles during coffee breaks, intermissions and commercials.

I am currently ranking 2nd overall when you search for toronto blog in Google. That's out of 44,900,000 indexed sites, by the way.

General Electric, former CEO Jack Welch always told his executives to be number one or number two in their respective industry.

Mike, #2 is pretty damn good and something to be proud of.

In one of your last posts with screen shots, I noticed you were #2.. but damn TM...that's still pretty good.

Ever check how do you rank on Yahoo! search? Ya know...just for my own curiosity ;-)

I love Yahoo! and all... but if a web author is being honest he'll take a 20th place ranking in Google over a 1st place ranking in Yahoo! :-)

Does hitting the promote button help or is that just for personal settings?

It seems the promote button is just for logged in users right now - so there's no SEO value.

That's a good point, though. I'm always careful to ensure I'm logged out of Google when I check organic rankings.

Hey Mike,

You're number one to me, but you'll never make #1 to Google until you can drop at least as much cash on Google Adwords as BlogTO does. Then the real competition will begin.

Don't let Google fool you, they do count how much you spend on Adwords and use that in your page rankings.

I suspect that BlogTO spends some dough.

Pete, I've heard these conspiracy theories.

I honestly don't believe Google would risk the integrity of their valuable brand by letting Adwords spend influence organic rankings. In fact, I like the alternative conspiracy theory better. The big Adwords spenders are punished in the organic ranking, forcing them to spend more money on Adwords to increase their traffic!

I've got to admit, for a one man show, that's pretty damn good.

Good luck with your challenge, though. I have to admit, I prefer your content to blogTO's.
