Mr. Sub's Gay Dad Ad: The Exclusive Untold True Story

Published by Toronto Mike on October 13, 2009 @ 13:34 in Miscellaneous

microphoneEarlier this month, there was a shitstorm swirling around Mr. Sub's Gay Dad Dinner ad. I got an email from the ad agency, BOS Toronto, asking me to remove the YouTube video of the ad I embedded in my original entry about the ad.

Shortly after I wrote about this, I heard from the mother of one of the children at the table in the ad. We've been corresponding, and she's had some interesting inside information she wasn't willing to let me share. Until now.

Before we delve into the details, here's the ad in question.

Note: YouTube clip removed because ACTRA told my source that it could appear as if she was helping the video go viral. I know that makes no sense, but I've removed it to make life easier for my source.

I still hate that ad... but I digress. The quoted content below belongs to my source, who I will not name, as per her request. She has fully agreed to let me share this. She feels she has nowhere else to turn.

Here is the deal with this ad (and I know your feelings on the ad itself). The CAW obviously took exception to it. If you have been following the progresson of this thing you know it's all over the gay bloggers sites now and most of them are all saying it's pretty tame and aren't taking alot of exception to it.

Mr. Sub is denying culpability. BOS has been fired, and basically none of the actors involved in this ad have or will be paid for any usage (no residuals, no internet usage etc). BOS is denying it leaked it to the web even though it was on their website and was included in all of the press releases when the series of ads went live. They feel because they have put forth "an effort" to have any traces of it removed from the web that these kids (and adults) don't deserve any payment.

I have been on the phone with ACTRA for the last two weeks advocating on behalf of my son (and the other actors as a result) for some kind of compensation for usage. Based on a conversation I had earlier today I have been told it will be nearly impossible to see any payments coming through for the reasons outlined above.

Here is the full story now. There is another version of this ad. The ad is equally lame but instead of announcing he is gay, he announces he is selling the kids off as scientific experiments. They (both BOS and Mr. Sub) knew full well the Gay ad would raise eyebrows and filmed the other as a backup. (BTW...the actors were only paid for filming of one spot, not two, so they have been screwed twice now). I believe they had every intention of airing the gay ad. It was leaked to the web at the same time as the other ads to "test the waters" so to speak before going live on the tele. I believe they had every intention of it going viral, which it did with great success. Due to the controversy and the complaints from the CAW everyone wants to step very far away form it and try to bury the whole thing. In the process these kids are getting screwed. Note that the residuals for internet usage are miniscule compared to television residuals so we are in reality only talking a couple hundred dollars per actor. I am angry at all of the shenanigans and the principle behind it all.

They very easily could have aired the second version filmed and avoided all of it. They wanted the controversy, they wanted the exposure (there is no such thing as bad exposure right?), and now that it has seemingly backfired on them from many different levels, they all want to deny culpability. BOS has been made a scapegoat, but is still responsible for not paying the actors, Mr. Sub looks like they have no backbone, and are getting called wimps by even gay bloggers, and the whole thing is a giant cluster$#$%.

Your blog has a lot of readers and I'd love to get the word out on this one. If it had never been released we would have cut our son's losses and said... sometimes that happens (been there done that), but it is out there and these kids deserve what is due to them. My own son does this for two reasons, he loves it, and it is putting away money for University for himself. I know in the end we are only talking a couple hundred dollars but Mr. Sub has basically gotten worldwide exposure at the actor's expense.

Given the seemingly lack of power of ACTRA to be able to resolve this whole situation I'm actually thinking of writing to the CAW chapter that spearheaded this whole thing, union to union...LOL (even though they hate the fact that it was made to begin with).

I would like it mentioned that we vetted this ad past members of the gay community before agreeing to film it. (I'm betting I'm not going to have too many friends over at ACTRA when this is all said and done...rocking the boat and all).

Unpaid actors, denial of accountability by a now fired advertising agency, a claim of complete (and impossible) ignorance by Mr. Sub, the filming of a second non-gay ad, and an actor's union deeming the gay dad version homophobic.

A true clusterfuck.

And yet the one with the guy in the bondage gear getting KO'd by his wife was fine...

Hi Mike et al. I'm the source. For the record. The Actor's union didn't deem it homophobic, that was the CAW. Our actor's union just seems to be powerless in getting these kids paid.

@source Thank you for clarifying that point. Who is CAW than if they're not the actor's union?

@elvis Poor Maddie...

Hi there Mike - this is just one of the many reasons I visit your blog often. You just never know what you'll find. You do an excellent job, that's for sure.

Wow, the back story on this one is really something else. Kudos to 'The Mom' (aka The Source). Don't let up until you get what those kids have coming to them.

Those a-holes have to step up and do the right thing - and that's not something that will happen without tons of prodding.

And don't even get me started on how much unions suck.

Friends at ACTRA? That's oxymoronic.

Get the word out on this one. It's been a stinker from the very beginning.

GO MOM!

CAW=Canadian Auto Workers. They are the ones that started a letter writing campaign to Mr. Sub and facebook group denouncing it (facebook group has now been deleted)
ACTRA= Actor's union. The union is small, but actors pay union dues to ensure safe working environments, proper pay, negotiate both commercial and film/tv contracts etc.

how do canadian auto workers get involved with a crappy sub ad?

This ad really isn't that bad and is not deserving of all this rhetoric.

I don't really care if the ad itself is offensive or not. Everyone has an opinion one way or another, and is completely entitled.

However, and maybe this is because I've worked in a different field in the entertainment industry and in a different country, why aren't the actors getting paid? If they worked, at all, which they did, shouldn't they receive compensation?

@Jessie, actors pay is a little complicated.
Union actors pay is split. First you get a session fee for the actual day of shooting. (The rate depends on the role)
When a commercial goes to air, if the actor hasn't been edited out they then get residuals. These again vary on how many markets the ad is shown in, amongst other things.
A big thing for the actors and unions was internet usage and payment for their work online. The pay for internet commercials and productions is tiny but at least it exists.
The reason the actors in this particular ad are not being paid is that BOS is denying putting the ad online to begin with.
It got there somehow. It was on BOS' website and in their press releases to all the marketing mags/online publications. If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck it's generally a duck.

The caveat to actors NOT getting residual payments are basically, if it hasn't gone to air, or been put online then they don't get paid. We are used to that. We are used to filming and for some reason or another it doesn't get released. Disappointing but part of the game. This one was released, therefore, IMO, the actors need to be paid the second portion of thier earned compensation.

Although i am sure these children should be compensated, i also think this is another example of society freaking out about something harmless.

I was one of the first to chime in on this ad and I knew for a fact this was coming. If i knew this was coming and saw it as completely harmless, how can the agency not have known?

Seriously, if people got upset for the right reasons instead of dumb reasons like this our "source" would not be in this scenario in the first place.

So much blame to pass out, so little time.....

Thanks to unions (CAW, ACTRA)and the powerful gay lobby, free speech is stifled. If the ad made fun of straight white men or the Catholic church, there would be no issues and it would have ran.

Total double standard by the unions and fairies.

I never thought I'd hear the words "the powerful gay lobby" in my life.

I knew CAW stood for Canadian Auto Workers, but I naturally assumed this had to be another CAW. Weird.

This may sound harsh, but the issue has nothing to do with paid actors, so who cares. Since the agency was fired, there is no issue. Case closed. Let this one die, Mike.

Argie - if the man announced he was a straight white male or Catholic, I doubt it would have had the same impact for obvious reasons, they may have looked at him as if he was retarded, but then a whole new group would be upset...

The agency that created this ad got fired....but someone at Mr. Sub had to give approval to the agency. Agencies always pitch all sorts of ideas....it is the company itself that approves the content.

@source - Thanks for the clarification! It is a little different than I'm accustomed to and agree with you that it certainly seems like a duck! Finally, I think I fully understand what BOS meant by being in breach of contract in Mike's earlier post regarding being requested to take the commercial down.

I suppose the best bet is to prove they leaked the commercial. That shouldn't be too hard, I would imagine, since very few people likely had access to it to place on the internet in the first place.

Good luck with this, I certainly hope everything works out in your son's favour!

Yeah, you;re right Argie. Those unions and gays have just ruined the world. I mean, what have unions ever done for the average person. Oh yeah, I remember - 5 day work weeks, paid holidays, sick benefits, stat holidays, safety in the work place, pension plans, the right to challenge wrongful dismissal. But you're right. Big companies are our friends. They would have done all of that without pressure from unions. You know, just out of the goodness of their big old hearts...

Romy...Unions had their place and time. No question.
They are now just protecting the lazy. Their time was up a long time ago. They are now just a destructive force in the economy.

Wanted to send a big thanks to Mike for publishing this a few weeks back.

Since then, I've been out of communications with ACTRA (me thinks they were not amused with me going public).

Funny turn of events. The folks from CAW who led the letter writing campaign re the original ad and I were in contact. They informed me they were going to send letters to both BOS and Mr. Sub, in support of getting these kids paid.

What has happened since then I do not know. I've been cut out of the loop and intentionally stepped back from ACTRA to see how the cards would fall.

I want to thank the anonymous reader of TorontoMike for sending him a head's up that the sanitized version had aired.

We have to monitor when and where the kids commercials air to ensure they are being paid.

I sent some notes through the mom networks to see if anyone else had seen it. Sure enough as I was sending notes of thanks for station/date/time confirmations to moms out in Vancouver I saw it during the Detroit/Toronto hockey game. I recorded it.

No denying it exists anymore and hopefully this will pave the way to receipt of a cheque in short order.

On another upside. I was at the ACTRA office on Friday for an unrelated matter and they were all nice to me so perhaps I've been forgiven my indiscretion. :) (I didn't see the two who knuckle wrapped me via conference call the day after Mike posted this though)

The second version of the ad is a blatant rip-off of a scene from Monty Python Meaning of Life.
The shittiest ad-agency ever, hope they get sued into oblivion. If ever a writer showed me a reel with a spot obviously plagiarized, I would make sure they never worked again.
