Maple Leafs 2, Penguins 5

Published October 11, 2009 @ 11:11 in Toronto Maple Leafs

leafsI've been recapping Leaf games on this site for six years. Here's the first one from October 11, 2003. You'll see that prior to this year I kept track of our current record, past three games and team scoring leaders in each recap. This season, I think I can do without the constant reminder of our placement in the Eastern Conference.

It's looking bad. Much like the game against Washington last week, we were out-classed and looked lost. I haven't seen a team look that disorganized since I suited up for the CN Towers in the Swansea Hockey Association back in the mid-80s. I watch, hoping for sparks of hope and signs of what I witnessed in the pre-season to resurface, but it's not happening. This is a bad hockey club and this is going to be a long season.

Don Cherry spoke of Joey MacDonald as a guy who will turn this team around. I'm not sure what Don is smoking, but I'll try some. I'll try anything. Joey Mac can have a start and I'll just sit back and hope the team in front of him plays like an NHL team. That would be a good start.

Yes, last night was tough to swallow.

That is why i am so negative with you about the Leafs this season and why i told you last night before it started that i did not care if we win or lose.

My protection mechanisms to stop the pain are not working so well.

This hurts. I know it is all about a long term plan. But we were supposed to be about D and make games difficult for other teams.

Where is that? Shit, if we lost 4 to 0 yesterday and showed effort and spurts of a good team I would be fine with it.

Bring up Bozak and Kadri!!!! I must say I was against it but as long as their egos can handle losing, bring em on up!!!!

It depends how we define "hurts".

We're used to this by now. We came into last season knowing we didn't have a shot at the playoffs and that was our fourth year in a row on the outside looking in. We always hope for a miraculous 7th/8th place finish, but not one of us would be surprised to miss the playoffs again this year.

I'm the guy who wanted Bozak and Kadri on this team. I just want someone with skill. I'm watching every game anyway, for some damn reason, so it would be nice to have something to cheer.

But we're used to this. It doesn't hurt so much as it disappoints. We've brought in the new coach, the new GM and changed the culture of this team, but it still looks awfully bleak. Now we've given up our next two first round draft choices...

Now that hurts.

And as with the last two seasons, this year has been alot easier after four games...

They have only blown one late-game lead versus Montreal. They're just plain losing the rest, which I think isn't better since they're not even competitive.

So blown points as of October 11th: 1

Hey bro,

Define "hurts" however you like.

This hurts!! When you bleed blue and white and think you will compete, this hurts. There is blue and white blood running down my nose as we speak. :)

Hey Ry, do you realize there hasn't been a Leaf playoff game since our 5-year olds were born in the summer of 2004?

We have freakin' 5-year olds who have never been alive for a single Leaf playoff game. Maybe this unprecedented drought is their fault?

Clearly one of them must be sacrificed to the Playoff Gods.

Their mom's will understand won't they?
