CFNY's Catch Us If You Can Contest and No Repeat Workdays

radioIn the Globe's Ballad of Martin Streek, Program Director Ross Winters claimed CFNY's limit for song repetition was now 7 times in 24 hours. I actually believe that limit to be much higher. In January, during one 12-hour random spot check, a song had already been played 6 times.

CFNY used to be known for its wide playlist and rarely playing the same track in the same day. In fact, I've got the old station promos to prove it.

Here's their "Catch Us If You Can" contest that promises $102 to anyone who catches CFNY playing the same song twice in one day.

Here's a promo for CFNY's No-Repeat Workday. Dan Duran will tell you that you could win $5000 if you catch them playing any song twice between 9 and 5.

Things are rather different at 102.1 these days. I repeat, things are rather different at 102.1 these days.

For sure it's higher, it has to be. Every time I tune in I can be sure to hear Rusted From The Rain at least once. the other day I left it on for a few hours against my better judgment while I was working on some things and I swear I heard that song no less than 4 times. It's not a bad song by any means, but no song is that good. So either the limit is higher than he claims or they were trying to get all 7 out of the way in a hurry that day.

Steve

By the way, 7 times, even if you hold to it, is still too damn high. It allows for a song to be played more than once every 4 hours. Saying that we can hear the same song 7 times in a 24 hour period isn't a selling point, it's another push towards turning the radio off and putting my 8000 or so song playlist on random. Nothing's going to play 7 times in 24 hours there.

You know, flogging this dead horse is getting depressing. And that's not a shot at you Mike... write about CFNY all ya want but I think we've all got the message by now and I think we've all picked our side of the fence.

And another thing, how about sharing these as Mp3's????

Poor Argie... I may be jumping on his bandwagon with regards to the Edge postings. Since it once was my go-to radio station, I was interested in all these posts (still was very interested in the Martin Streak posts), but I stopped listening quite some time ago.

August 12, 2009 @ 6:47 PM

HEctor

You should send these clips to Mr. Winters. On second thought...he wouldn't listen to them anyway.

August 12, 2009 @ 6:49 PM

CQ

What Jason said, about easily sharing the files as mp3s - which you did with the very entry before this one.

Does that Seven times limit ever apply to Alan Cross promos? Alan Cross(!) and the Ongoing Retelling of an informative telephone interview back in 1995. Alan Cross(!) and his lazer eye surgery. Alan Cross(!) and his daily syndicated Explore Music half hour.
When will Corus just get it over with and rename their station after this guy?

This entry, as with the Pete and Geets one earlier in the week, aren't really meant to bitch about the current state of CFNY. I'll admit, I've beat that horse to death lately.

The fact is, I recently got a hold of plenty of old spirit of radio CFNY clips, and I'm going to share them. I'm sharing them for archival purposes - I'll try not to spin the posts as "look how great this was and now it sucks".

A few CFNY fun facts re: this summer:
- They fired Martin Streek
- They fired Barry Taylor
- They hired Fearless Fred
- Martin Streek took his own life
- Bookie was pushed out of the drive home spot
- Strombo took his radio show off the station

That's a lot - hence the number of entries. But I hear ya loud and clear.

August 12, 2009 @ 7:19 PM

@CQ

What's with the Alan Cross bashing? He may be one of the few at Corus (besides Andy Frost) who can actually talk competently about music. Isn't music the reason we listen?

August 12, 2009 @ 7:26 PM

Fearless Fred will save the station? NOT!! 102.1 - The Edge, whatever, is done!!

i personally love these clips - and all the cfny talk. if we keep talking about this and put it out in the open, there's a chance for change.

Sent the link to the morning show and Bookie...cause I love crude humor, so I do listen to Dean and the boys...and Bookie because he is the only one who works in the time of living (7am-12pm) there about the music still.

Who knows if they will actually read it...

Andrew (needs a more distinct name)

The music has gone downhill. Winters has made it clear that my demo is not important and I get it.

I listen to Dean Blundel, not for the music, but because I like a laugh in the morning. Occasionaly I get to listen to some good songs.

I listened to Bookie in the afternoon because I liked his knowledge and his passion for the music. I don't think Fearless Fred will bring that. From what I have listened to Fred, it doesn't seem to be my style (and most likely, that is the point).

So CFNY is going to be slowly moved off my regular listening schedule. CDs (and if I ever get an MP3 player in the car) will become more common place. There isn't anything else in Southern Ontario that I can get that is worth it.

Maybe Winters will get canned and a new PD will take the station in a better direction. I doubt it, but I can hope.

No surprise they played Billy Talent a gazillion times. They're Cdn and the station has to fulfill its Can-con requirements.

There anit a lot of Cdn bands worth playing on a major radio station so BT gets tons of play. In the past, the same applied to Nickelback, OLP, the Hip and a few others.

That's not how it happened at all. Your colleague and I have been talking for weeks. I asked him why he took down the Martin Street pilot and he sent me the new YouTube link.

Josie was saying how Bookie's new evening show will be "music oriented". Not sure what that means, but hopefully it busts the playlist open a bit. If so, maybe I can start listening more often.

Maybe it will be "all about the music"...Just heard Bookie interviewing Strombo on the radio - his new "initiative" actually sounds non-tivial.

@jason | Getyouroj.com

You grasp my point perfectly. Music is exactly the reason we listen - or don't listen - to a station. And whichever station we choose to listen to, we want to know something about the music we're listening to - and Cross is one of the best in the telling.

CQ seems to have a problem with Cross but just seems to be bashing and running without explanation.

I gave my comment, and I prefer to leave it at that.
Most listeners really like A.C., I am not one of those fans.

This entry is about station repetition. Hearing a same person's voice seeming at least once at every time I listen, within 15 to 35 minutes, is repetition.

I misread the article, and for a minute, thought that the current 102.1 was doing that contest. All I could think was "holy shit, they'll be bankrupt before noon!"

@CQ

Actually, the entry was about song repetition.

However, in discussing all the station's audio - including IDs, tags, features, commercials, remotes, etc., you might be right. Other than the "On-going History..." or Chris Sheppard and then Martin Streek on Saturday nights, I haven't listened to much CFNY/Edge since the late-80s. Maybe in total his voice is on the station too much, I don't listen enough to know.

I am mostly a channel/station surfer - worse than TV. Perhaps that is why the non-song stuff gets to me.
And hey it's only opinion, I can also be wrong.

@TorontoMike

You only repeated yourself once in this space. You have a few more left on this topic!
