Alex Rios Traded to White Sox For Absolutely Nothing

Published by Toronto Mike on August 10, 2009 @ 20:27 in Toronto Blue Jays

bluejaysThe title of this entry is misleading. Alex Rios wasn't traded to the Chicago White Sox today. Rios went to the White Sox in a straight waiver claim, with the Blue Jays simply allowing Chicago to take his contract, without getting a player in return.

I had very high hopes for Rios. Admittedly, he's having an off year, but he is hitting .264 with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Is that so bad for the 28-year old that J.P. Ricciardi couldn't get a single team to cough up anything for him?

There's something rotten in the State of Denmark. Rios should be a tradeable commodity. Meanwhile, Ricciardi was shopping Roy Halladay because he doesn't think our ace will resign here, and Paul Beeston is on 590 saying he thinks we can lock up Halladay and extend his contract. WTF?

Let's go back to mid-May when we were singing "World Series, Here We Come". Go on and click through, I'll wait. Back? Good. Now tell me what the hell happened?

JP is like JF jr. Why is he still with the Jays.
I would get rid of Wells before Rios.

Traded for a bag of balls doesn't sound as good as a bag of pucks - methinks McCown is right - this guy has some tools but too stupid to use them

Now Wells I believe is untradeable. That contract is like twice the size of Rios'.

But Rios... Rios had some value. Many still think he'll be a 30/30 all-star. And his contract wasn't nearly as bad as Wells'.

What a waste. We should have gotten something for Rios. He was trade-able. For the love of Pete, someone get rid of JP!!

My only hope is that they'll take some of the money they're saving on his contract and try to go out and buy somebody decent. If not this might go down as one of the biggest wastes in team history.

Mike, it was turning into more than an off year this guy has only had 10 extra basehits since July first. Thats not great production incase anyone was checking...Bob Mcgowan was tring to make sense of it on Friday and they were thinking that this move clears a guy who may have been disgruntled off the roster, next year he makes 12 miillion, thats off the books now, Rolens Money will be off the books and I believe Frank Thomas was still getting paid by them this year.
either way it frees up some money. For what or for whom may be the question. I will bet and this is what they were talking about on the Fan, that JP is history after this year. They are going to buy them out, they quoted one of the higher ups with Rogers saying that if someone came to them with designs on raising payroll to put a winner on the field and in turn filling Rogers Cenre again they are willing to listen.
So, this could be a move designed to help JP's replacement recalculate the roster. I agree that they should have been able to get SOMETHING for Rios. That is the biggest joke ever, but for how he has hit the last month and a half who would want that. 3 doubles since July First isnt exactly tearing the cover off the ball. The lack of homeruns is not as much a prolem as the fact that he should at least be spraying doubles all over Rogers Centre when they are at home.
I wouldnt be surprised to see Wells gone too if they can get someone to claim him.
They then go into the offseason with money to spend potentially with a new GM and a bigger payroll and all the money they save will go to offense because we have seen this year that they don't need pitching. Some of the younger guys who have started this year will go to the bullpen and revamp the pen but the rotation is knee deep. They will have Halladay, Cecil, Romero, Marcum and MdGowan/Tallet/Jannsen
Jesse Litsch I bet goes to the pen.
So all that money to buy offense...plus you consider parting ways with Overbay who hasn't produced, maybe you put Snider there.
or go get Puljos with the money you saved from Rios and Rolen.
they were talking possibly raising payroll to $110-120...They spend money and people will come

Wells needs to take a hike as well! (no pun intended) That way we can start from scratch & pay people for what they are worth & not for what they have done in the past.
