Leafs Acquire Wayne Primeau For Some Reason

Published by Toronto Mike on July 27, 2009 @ 20:06 in Toronto Maple Leafs

leafsBrian Burke has pulled off a trade with the Calgary Flames. Yes, a member of our defensive glut was involved, and no, it wasn't Tomas Kaberle.

Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and the Leafs' 7th round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft are off to Calgary for forward Wayne Primeau and the Flames' 2nd round pick in 2011.

At first it seems like we grossly overpaid for Primeau, a 33-year-old center who only scored three goals and 14 points in 67 games over his last two seasons in Calgary, but let's break it down. We're giving up a 7th rounder for a 2nd rounder, a defenseman who can't crack the Leafs lineup and a fringe NHL forward who was only in town for a cup of coffee.

It's not a blockbuster, but it's not as bad as you think. At least we finally have a player named Wayne in the lineup.

Update: Apologies to Wayne Carleton, Wayne Presley and Wayne Thomas, great Waynes in Maple Leafs history.

Holy fuck thats a terrible trade. Hope Burke knows something about Stralman that we don't.

I've never been as high on Stralman as others who see him as the second coming. Maybe it's all those nights I saw him on the Marlies blue line looking pretty damn regular.

I'll take the 2nd round pick.

Rumours in the Barilkosphere think this may be "clearing some contracts" for a bigger move...

In Burke we trust.

How many 3rd-4th line forwards do we need?
Terrible trade. Do the Leafs get his Bro Keith also?

Wayne Primeau is a good depth guy, he comes from a winning team and guys like him though not huge on the score sheet could be quality guys on the bench and in locker room and in key leadership roles on the ice. Primeau isnt flashy but hes a tough guy who will demand a little respect in the middle of the ice.

Not that I know a lot about Hockey, but it seems to me this trade is less about the player Toronto got, and more about the pick. Isn't building for the future what everyone wants?

I'll take the second rounder.

to hell with the second rounder - I want the player that could have replaced Kaberle in 2-3 years.

Another stupid trade by Burke.

Stralman is going to be a good def'n in this league.
