A Little Raptor Love For Kic - Marco Belinelli Arriva

Published by Toronto Mike on July 31, 2009 @ 20:21 in Toronto Raptors

raptorsKic sent me an angry Blackberry message the other day. "Where's the Raptors love? We're going to be awesome with Marco Belinelli in the lineup next year!"

Truth be told, I wasn't sure what a Marco Belinelli was. It turns out the Toronto Raptors acquired shooting guard Marco Belinelli from the Golden State Warriors for cash considerations and forward Devean George. Belinelli, 23, averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 21 minutes in 42 games last season, his second in the NBA.

I dig the Raps, I really do, but this is Kic's department. Here's his thoughts.

Ok BC is a smart GM, he signed Jarrett Jack (who's Bosh's friend from college). BC went and got Belinelli who is great friends with Bargs. Since Bargs just signed an extention BC wants to keep his core players. Yes, they may have overpaid for Jarrett Jack but if that keeps Bosh happy, then he has a better chance to resign him in the summer. Belinelli is still young and cheaper than Delfino. This is a solid team and has a better bench than the Kings starting 5

I think that's bananas.

Clearly we are in for a lot of 125 - 120 losses.

We have absolutely NO Defense.

We'll score. But we won't stop anyone from transition offense.

Bottom line, we need a solid two way wing man and we got a solid one way wingman in Turks.

Jack's okay though... as a backup guard.

Raps will not make the playoffs but may be a fun team to watch.

Bargs got better defensively near the last half of the season last year. Also, Evans will be get some good minutes to defend. Even though I agree that our defense isn't the best, we'll win games with our offence....hey BC wanted to create the Phoenix North and they sure know how to win without D.

Although BC has turned wine from water with some of these moves, this team is still going to be awful defensively.

So, that leaves the Phoenix style of team, try and outscore the opponents, which in theory is great, except this team is not the Phoenix of a few years ago who had good fast wing players.

This is still a 35 win team with poor rebounding and defence.

You didn't actually say "Truth be told, I wasn't sure what a Marco Belinelli was."

The kid has been making NBA news since his draft year in 2007! And, Toronto has always been his supposed eventual destination (even though the Raps didn't have the draft pick to take him).

The comment about being awesome because of Marco is just a little optimistic, Raps picked up a nice promising "rookie" equivalent off the GSW roster who had a month's worth of "wow" games in the NBA. Raps will be awesome - here's hoping Marco contributes to that.

Marco, like Demar gives Raps fans a legitimate hope of having a couple of really good athletic wing players in the next couple of seasons - something we haven't had since VC. (No knock on Hedo, but he's a playmaker/scorer, high flying dunks and amazing feats of athleticism not expected)

And, let's NOT use the Kings as a standard for comparison - or Pacers, Knicks, Nets, GSW, etc....
