Who's Your Grateful Dead?

Published February 5, 2008 @ 12:42 in Music

musicBob Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart reunited yesterday for the first time in four years to back Barack Obama. Weir, Lesh and Hart are the three surviving members of the Grateful Dead. "Deadhead" has become the generic term for super loyal fans who tour with a band as opposed to merely catching them when they hit town. This begs the question, if you were to be a Deadhead, who would be your Grateful Dead?

Chatting about Blue Rodeo recently with SoccerMom, she remarked that they were her Grateful Dead. A couple of bands jump out at me as my Grateful Dead, but I'd have to go with The Tragically Hip. If I had the time and the means I'd gladly tour with The Hip and catch them night after night.

Now it's your turn. Who would be your Grateful Dead if you could be a Deadhead?

My wife and I see BNL everytime they come home to perform. In true 'groupie' fashion we've had the chance to meet a couple of the guys too, once at a H&F Christmas party. They're always a lot of fun in concert.

I saw the Hip at a little hole in the wall dive bar here in Houston last year, it was quite the surreal experience. This is a band that can sell out the ACC and I was literally 30 feet away from the stage.

If I had the means, I'd certainly follow them around, they put on a hell of a show.

Pearl Jam for sure. I would also go almost anywhere for a Pink Floyd concert as well, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Pearl Jam and The Tragically Hip are tied at 3 a piece.

It's not a coincidence that those are my top two by a wide margin. They're both exceptional live bands who give their fans a true experience.

I would never ever choose a single band to follow along simply because there is too much music out there. I'd consider following a festival around, if the bookers did a good job with the acts. Eden Fest was awesome.. and I doubt we'll get anything close again in Toronto. I think many of those bands are still waiting to get paid. OK. Following Pearl Jam around sounds like hell on earth. Are you guys tone deaf? ;-)

I don't know about a band but I'd follow Tom Waits around.

About a month ago I saw Widespread Panic on a latenight PBS airing. This southern-country rock band have been drawing huge concert numbers over the years.
