Facebook Is Awfully Popular

In 2007, I got a Facebook account. I wasn't alone. Toronto became the first city in North America to break 1 million subscribers.

Last I checked Toronto proper had 2,503,281 residents. There's no way these grandiose claims that 1,000,000 of us have Facebook accounts is true. Metro Toronto's population is 5,555,912. I still don't buy that 20% have Facebook accounts, but I will make this observation. Facebook is awfully popular.

What's not to believe? Seemingly everyone has one, and I'm sure they count the virtually inactive ones in those numbers, so it doesn't seem that absurd to me. (Other than that the entire thing is an absurd Orwellian nightmare).

Think of everyone who's too young or too old to have a Facebook account.

Now think of all those people in the prime Facebook demo of 14 - 34 years old who don't have an account because they aren't that hip or savvy or interested.

I suspect this study is tainted b/c the sample audience polled is already a web-savvy group with a higher Facebook registration rate.

True, but I think of all the people that I would expect to never ever have a FB account that do and it blows my mind. A great number of those people are well over 34. That said, yup, probably a tainted study..

Also, I answered you over at my digs. Canon Power Shot A430.. works totally fine indoors but outside... something is a mess

The reason I think is simpler than this. The networks in Facebook are very inflexible. I live just north of Newmarket, but the closest network that I can belong to is Barrie or Toronto. There is no Newmarket Network. When you look at the GTA there are several million people in or around Toronto who may list Toronto as their network even though they live in Oshawa or Aurora.

Sure, but think of all the people who aren't in a network at all.

But you could be right. Either way you slice it, it's awfully popular.
