Lest We Forget

poppyI don't have a personal story to relate about war. My grandparents didn't serve and I don't have an uncle or a cousin in the armed forces. I once heard about my grandfather's brother serving in WWII, but the details are sketchy.

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, there are 205,533 living Canadians who served in WWII. There is only one living Canadian who served in The Great War. You don't need to have a personal story about Canada's participation in war to appreciate the sacrifice made by these brave men and women. Lest we forget.

My paternal grandfather lost both his legs in 1916 fighting underage in Europe in WWI. He was 17 approaching 18 at the time. He came home, married my grandmother and had (four but) 3 living children, my father, Reg, being the youngest, born in 1936 (and died in November, 1993). Grandpa Broadhead died in 1968, 8 months before I was even born, yet it has always been one of those things that I have been tied to - Grandpa Broadhead (Cecil Broadhead) = Rememberance Day. I'm sure my older cosuins feel exactly the same. I always think about the memory of my dad, his living sisters and my grandmother who passed away 2 months before her 100th birthday and 4 years after her youngest child died. I appreciate the fact we celebrate and honour our wars the way we do because this is one instance where we do it better than our American counterparts. Two minutes at 11:00 once a year isn't too much to ask is it??
