Omayra Sanchez

Yesterday I shared a collection of images that changed the world. There was one picture I had never seen before. It was of Omayra Sanchez and I visited Wikipedia to learn about her. She was a 13-year old victim of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano which erupted on November 14, 1985 in Armero, Colombia. She was trapped in water for three days before she died.

The picture below, which I don't recall ever seeing before, was taken shortly before she passed. She was trapped in such a fashion that they couldn't help her, and efforts to drain the water around her failed. This image is absolutely haunting.
